Farewell Crossings on the Amtrak Keystone Corridor

- In the summer of 2013, Amtrak and local municipalities are working together to decommission the last three crossings along the Keystone Corridor between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In the middle of June, Irishtown Road crossing between Gordonville and Ronks was permanently closed, with the roads on each side of the crossing being extended to existing roads. However, we were able to catch trains passing by the remains of the crossing, still giving horn as if nothing happened. The other two crossings in Mt. Joy are also explored. Eby Chiques Road will be bypassed by an overpass to the east of the crossing, which can be seen in the background in its beginning stages of construction.
A detailed description of the project can be found here:

In this video are 4 different visits: May 29, July 16 and 29, and August 2, 2013. The last visit features about a days worth of trains through the two crossings in Mount Joy. Aside from the great shots of the crossings, another plus is the amount of variety in locomotives and paint schemes.
May 29, 2013
0:00 - The eastbound Pennsylvanian 42 heads east through Newcomers Road in Mt. Joy with Dash-8-32BWH 512 still in Phase IV paint leading the way. Notice the ditch lights.
0:45 - Just a short while later, 43 speeds west with P42DC 119 on the point.
1:35 - Keystone Service 645 with AEM-7 944 pulling the train heads west through Eby Chiques crossing without any sign of changes.
July 16, 2013
2:30 - 42 flies east past the remnants of Irishtown Road with Phase V Dash-8-32BWH 514 leading. Notice the new roads come right up to where the crossing once existed, which will still make it a great place to railfan.
3:35 - 645 heads west with AEM-7 940 up front, but, unlike the other trains seen here, does not acknowledge the crossing.
July 29, 2013
4:25 - Once again situated at Irishtown Road, 43 speeds west with P42DC 152 leading with a few extra toots of K5LA.
5:15 - That evening at Newcomers Road in Mt. Joy, 656 heads east with AEM-7 927 pushing.
6:30 - A few minutes later 649 breezes by the camera with a cab car upfront, with AEM-7 918 pushing. I believe the object in the foreground is a flange greaser.
6:50 - At Eby Chiques, 651 heads west in great light with AEM-7 953 pushing the train. Notice there are now new catenary poles being erected, as well as the start of one bridge abutment.
7:35 - A few minutes later, 618 with AEM-7 947 leading heads east at the same angle. Depending on the timing of the trains, it is possible to catch 651 and 618/658 meeting here.
8:45 - An early 653 with AEM-7 935 pushing heads west past the Irishtown Road remains in the last rays of light, offering a vantage from the north side of the tracks. The road the connects to Cherry Lane to the west is hidden behind the new fill mounds.
August 2, 2013
9:45 - Arriving at Eby Chiques (yes, it is spelled incorrectly on the Amtrak sign) fairly early in the morning (after the fog cleared), 644 with AEM-7 927 pushing is the first eastbound caught at the crossing, along with one of the many feed and grain trucks that use this crossing daily.
11:30 - On this day, there was a 60 MPH restriction between the two crossings on the eastbound track. 641 heads west over Newcomer Road with AEM-7 943 bringing up the rear.
12:55 - Keystone Service 646 eases its way into the 60 MPH with 949 leading.
13:50 and 14:50 - Moving back over to Eby Chiques for a couple of Keystone Service, 609 heads west with 952 while moments later 648 returns a trainset from Harrisburg with the 943 leading.
16:05 - Continuing the streak of AEM-7's facing the camera, 950 leads train 643 toward Harrisburg.
17:05 - Framed between the crossing and the new catenary poles, train 650 banks into the turn with AEM-7 952 leading. As the train goes away, you can see a better look at the preparations for the bridge construction, as well as a couple of burnt tank cars from a fire that happened at this facility a few weeks prior.
18:50 and 19:25 - The Pennsylvanians are next, and both have good leaders today. 42 heads east with 514, with the crossing to the camera's back, while a short time later 43 heads west under cloud cover with Phase III Heritage P42DC 145 leading.
19:55 - Train 645 with 935 leading heads past a wider angle of the Newcomer Road crossing.
20:20 - 649 banks through the curve at Eby Chiques with plenty of K5LA from the cab car with 921 on the rear.
21:10 - The sun is out, but alas, after several tries I could not get an AEM-7 leading at this angle. 651 speeds west with 927 again.
21:55 - The last shot of the day goes to 618, showing off the crossing and its rural setting. 921 leads the train, as another one of the many trucks for the mill ends off the video.
I hoped you enjoyed this installment of the Keystone Corridor. Other shots from these days excluded in this video will hopefully make it to another one in the future. Thanks for watching! - Авто та транспорт
RIP 943...that was some great horn at 15:22. And the doppler effect on 921 at the end was awesome!
That K5LA on 921 is so incredibly.. I can't even describe.. Awesome video.. shame these crossings are on their last days
Minute plis
5:24 Beautiful scenery around the crossing.
Looks like the crossing in unstoppable with the little girl scene when the triple 7 speeds by her
@@NortheastCorridorFilms true
Gotta love that quill done by the engineer on 943
Love the Pennsylvania countryside. I was born in Pa. Other side of Valley Forge, and watched the former READING R/R run alongside of Pennsylvania R/R through Norristown back in the late sixties. Great catches.
I love the sleek trains with the rural backdrop. Very reminiscent of the heyday of passenger rail. I'd almost expect to see a Pennsy GG1 with a long consist of streamline cars.
Or the old Silverliner III m.u. cars that the PRR/P.C. owned before SEPTA took ownership of them for Airport Line service.
6:36 the iconic train game horn!
6:41 that’s the horn for the Prarieland Flyer in Rails Unlimited!
Yes that is Right
It's so weird seeing Irishtown Road like that now.. Just a couple years since I was there and captured a couple videos of my own of the 42 and 43
Great video work: rock solid tripod, minimal zooming and panning and when done - done smoothly! My compliments to the videographer!
8:09 I really love that kind of sound of the amtrak horn!
K5la
Wow! That was a great video of the amtrak keystone corridor!
1:23 8:08 12:14 22:48
These are the best K5LAs because of the amtrak doppler effect!
Well done. Lot of time and effort put into this production.
Amazing K5LA’s from the AEM-7’s
Awesome Video!
It's sad to see them get rid of the crossings. These crossing have some classic signals!
RIP crossings!
Also nice catch of that hertage unit!
Amazing catches!
6:41
rails unlimited moment
I am confused 😐
Thanks. Great catches by the way.
I just found and posted a link in the description that says everything one needs to know about the project. The main goal of removing the crossings to allow the possibility of 125 MPH track. Due to construction time, Eby Chiques and Newcomer Road will be around until fall 2014.
Amazing video!
Excellent video!
Great job in catching all the Amtrak's!
Excellent coverage 👌🏻
Yes, Norfolk Southern serves a couple of industries on that siding. They even have their own switcher which can be seen at 18:40, though I have never been fortunate to see it operate.
Thanks Bill, had to do this before the AEM-7's are gone too.
I sure miss those crossings
22:27-22:54
BEST K5LA EVER
markusdude1 That's what you'll here on an F40PH. I never knew AEM-7AC's could have 1990s K5LA's like that.
K 🔥🔫💰💵💴
921 was killer✌️

Oh yeah the AEM-7 nathan k5la got into the P42
That seems to be normal for most railroads in the east. By me on the NYS&W Railway, the bells shut off once the gate is lowered, and usually stay off, but some crossings begin ringing again when the gate rises.
I'm by the Northwestern Pacific in Redwood Valley, up here in Mendocino County in NW CA, the Skunk train crossings are all regular ones too.
6:41 I just remembered that this horn is used in Rails Unlimited.
Thanks for this video! This brings back a lot of childhood memories. I’ve known Irishtown Rd crossing since kindergarten, as a small boy I always used to go there with my grandma to spot some trains. Now that I’ll be turning 18 years old in January... I’m starting to feel old already just by watching this video! 😆
Really a shame they closed all three remaining RR-crossings about 6 years ago, although I can understand why...
I love those cab cars used on the keystone I’ve been in the cab of one while going 110mph
We need to see more corridors in the United states like this where trains run with overhead wires and can go up to 100-125 mph that would be great
Those Ex budd metroliner cabs sound great as well as the AEM-7s
I guess it's only a matter of time before they take these last few out of a service, but on the upside the 125 MPH will be quite the sight if they do go as far as upgrading to as fast as the toasters can operate. This was a nice example of how much creativity can be expressed in three locations for a solid 24 minutes, lot of nicely composed shots here. I especially liked the one of 953 at Irishtown and the 646 at Newcomer. The final parting shot of the vehicular traffic closed out the era well.
OMG the rails unlimited amrail/amtrak f40ph horn 6:40
You know why because the video made in 2013 and rails unlimited was created in 2017
Never seen ditch lights flash in sync like that. I wonder how many other locomotives do that?
I rode a Keystone train On August 6th, I guess they are also replacing Catenary poles too. Don't worry, The AEM-7's will be on the Keystone Corridor for a year or two more, I had a chat one time with a Engineer.
Couple of very nice trucks as well.
20:40 With the headlights turned off, This looks exactly what the Amfleet Cab Car looks like back in 1990
Yes, one of those is a private lane to a farm and the other is owned by Amtrak as a service road to a power sub-station.
Awesome video
22:27 who ever the engineer was operating 921 on that day, did one of the coolest 19B I ever heard.
The ditch lights in the first train are like the old days
They're all like that around here, and thank goodness too. Only UP and BNSF and corresponding commuter rails out west have started doing that.
Doing what?
0:18 that is just beautiful! B32-8WH's were taken off the Pennsylvanian service due to newer speed restrictions that BWH's can't handle. 512 is my favorite Dash-8 on Amtrak. Also whats up with the ditch lights?
those ditchlight looks like there blinking
FNAFAndtrainfan 2017 They are, they are not supposed to blink at the same time...
RiversideRailProductions true
There supposed to alternate, strange.
Old style ditch lights
He defend
He on tracc
But most importantly
He Amtracc
Underrated as hell
nice video and catches! sad to see there getting rid of the crossings up there :( also i can see the freight spur switcher at 18:40 is a 44 tonner and also 19:30 nice to see you caught a amtrak heritage unit!
Reminds me of Nostalgia...
Right now it's 110 MPH at some places.
They're doing a major track upgrade between Harrisburg and Lancaster, bringing the rails to the same specifications of the Keystone Corridor east of Lancaster (CWR and concrete sleepers). This is going on between now and before Thanksgiving, 2024.
6:41 anyone heard that familiar horn before?
Hell yea lol
Its a horn from rails unlimited
6:40 Little did that engineer likely know, they made history by honking that horn.
What history?
@NOVARailandWeatherEnthusiast That specific horn sound was used in train sims (or at least in Rails Unlimited on Roblox idk).
@@amtrakpepsiproduct1605 That’s….not even close to historical lol.
@@NOVARailandWeatherEnthusiast this is a joke.
Must have been a circuit error with the ditch lights in the first clip. Great video!
Amazing Video of the final days of the Keystone Corridor Crossings. Sad to see them go.
nice videos. sad those crossings are decommissioned.
Anyone notice at 0:30 both ditch lights flash
yep
NPCU #90220 also had that pattern of flashing on it's ditch lights.
I only clicked cause I saw toast
West Of Hudson LOL
What's toast?
@@larailfan1714, thats the nickname for the AEM-7
Same
You know what they say,
Nice video
Cool, I haven't seen any like that here in California, or the west.
6:42 sounds like the classic Amtrak locomotive the F40PH
its stupid that they used that for it
my favorite horn is on the AEM-7
I like that train horn 5:59
Indeed over this side of the pond Network Rail have got rid of all of the level crossings on the west coast main line so that the Virgin Pendolino trains can do 125 mph runs from London Euston to the West Midlands and then up to Glasgow Central
6:41 has a familiar audio
6:41 Rails Unlimited horn
The ditch lights on 512 were broken I think
Why are they getting rid of the crossings? Just to by pass them?
0:22: How strange it seems to me. Normally, the indicator position lamps flash intermittently. Why are they both blinking at the same time?
3:50: No horn zone? Because the train hasn't done the honk sequence.
15:36: Is it me or is it a two-tone horn?
19:06: The Dash 8 seems to have a Norfolk Southern horn, since the tone is not the typical one used by the P42, for example.
21:59: I love the classical railroad crossing bell.
They only took out the crossings because on highspeed lines, trains are restricted to certain speeds depending on the crossing concrete filler/track pad's functioning, or the types of level crossings it has.
Still some high speed crossings north of New Haven.
What horn does that first dash 8 have amazing sound though
Someone go get the signals from Irishtown Road!
They'd look epic with 50's signs and gates.
As for the gates, and bells. I believe most of these were made in Dutch country. Lancaster, Reading, Intercourse, Blue balls???
Is anyone gonna notice the ro scale sandbox AEM7 horn at 16:51
they added bells to the crossing at 8:49, i remember it had no bell
Ive been hearing people talk about ditch lights, there are three modes for ditch
Ditch lights: flash
Ditch lights: freeze
Ditch lights: flash ( both )
Those are the three modes for ditch lights [your welcome] > _ >
The Dash 8 was missing a number board.
nice dear
I love the p42dc
Its strongest engine in the world
Do you think that you can tell us what crossing the train is going through otherwise the video was great
8:06 best AEM horn ever
what camera?
So what do they do when they close a Crossing?
I get the kreeps whenever I see a tanker truck going over these tracks!
Nice tanker truck at 11:15
R.I.P. AEM-7s
The Amtrak maker's should make a rare keystone with an aem-7 leading surfurliners and & a dash 8 coupled in the back with a baggage and observation cars
Sadly the AEM-7 of Amtrak retired at 2016.
Why were the crossings eliminated?
2:05 my fav toaster #944 sounded epic.
Same here since when i was 5 -8 i learned about it so sad that it got removed
I just build my first AEM-7 yesterday and today
Maybe tomorrow
@@shuntarabaker-brown6191 good luck
At 6:40 is a Roblox Audio from an Amtrak F40PH or some other Amtrak train on rails unlimited
Shouldn't have Irishtown Rd been removed already?
6:41 the horn used for the Amtrak keystone cabcars used in roblox rails unlimited
not anyone they made it ike the dash 8
well that sucks. in the first vid (great catch btw) why no alternating headlights. just blinking head lights
Is there any Railroad Crossing for the Keystone anymore just Bridges Now???????
Why is the Pennsylvanian pulled by a diesel locomotive when it can be pulled by an electric locomotive between Harrisburg and Philly? Just curious as to why.
512 has some very weird ditchlights...
HELLO!
I do love me some dash 8s
Every time iwatch any Amtrak zipping up and down the rails I wish I was behind the wheel call me for a test drive....I watch train videos almost daily......
Did they get rid of all the crossing on the keystone
The first train has a rare engine
