Fisher and Paykel I think was the first company to develop and design the worlds first direct drive motor aka Smart Drive washers. The factory is located in East Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. It was a revolutionary for a small county to manufacture an appliance of that scale. Unfortunately the factory was outsourced to Thailand somewhere like.
Yep, since their acquisition by Haier in 2012 they outsourced to Thailand and unfortunately stopped manufacturing here in NZ. And yes, they were the first to implement a direct drive design, although the name is a little misleading. The BLDC motor design itself is nothing new, that style of motor existed since 1962 and were invented first by T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey.
