2024 Subaru WRX TR vs Toyota GR Corolla / Back for Blood
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 тра 2024
- If you want an AWD, manual sport compact, you could buy a WRX, but if you want something more hardcore, the new Subaru WRX TR is here. However, Toyota already makes the performance focused GR Corolla, so, which one is the best? Other competitors to the two include the VW Golf R and GTI, Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Elantra N.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test drive the WRX for today's review.

Am I the only person alive that would rather have an analog gauge cluster?
I think a lot of people (including myself) would appreciate a nice analog cluster, especially in a sport compact. However, if it would look more at home in my mom's Crosstrek, I'd rather have a customizable digital dash!
No. I love that my new Cayman has an analog gauge cluster!
Yes you are the only person.
Not alone at all, I reallllly prefer analog dashes. It’s a shame a lot of manufacturers are heading towards screens, it’s cheaper for them so I don’t see it stopping
I thought so too until I saw one in person.
It really annoys me when UA-cam car reviewers act like bigger wheels are an upgrade when they aren't. Grippier tires are an upgrade. In the real world cars with more sidewall are much more driveable. Don't buy into the marketing BS from the manufacturers. Like the channel though and keep up the great work.
More sidewall is advantageous only for ride quality. If you're talking grip and steering feel, shorter sidewalls are better because they are stiffer. That said, there probably isn't much of an advantage going from 18" to 19" wheels on the WRX except for having slightly more clearance for the Brembos.
You couldn't be more wrong, it's not just marketing, there is a very good reason why all the high performance cars come with big wheels.
Bigger wheels give clearance for big brakes and wider tires.
Those ARE the grippier tires my guy.
Low profile tires have a wider tread and stiff sidewall resulting in a wide square contact area that gives a ton of grip for high performance driving. Better handling and more feedback too.
All Subaru really needs to do in my opinion is throw the STI drivetrain / trans in the TR and they'd have the the best STI they've ever made hands down. Easy power with a drivetrain that can actually hold it and a competent AWD system. Not that it'll ever happen but would be amazing. I'd be trading mine in if they ever went down that route. The TR is just not quite enough, but a step in the right direction
That's expensive though. Reality is, Subaru is a pretty small company! They have to be cost-efficient.
Honestly, outside of transmission and the adjustable diffs, you can basically unlock an STI and a ton more with 1-3k invested into the current gen WRX (Cobb, springs, pads, fluid).
It's insanely tuneable (and reliable when tuned), so I kinda get their approach tbh
@@thrillhousecycling7260 'outside of transmission and the adjustable diffs' That's bascially what an STi is...
I have driven both and I picked the WRX.. there is so much more aftermarket support than the GR corolla. Both amazing cars and both are fun to drive!
After waiting patiently for over a year for dealer ADM on the GR Corolla to vanish, I now find myself about to choose the WRX. That practicality is hard to ignore, and the WRX seems like the better choice between the two when sharing the keys with my 18yo.
@@jscifres100It's very tune able too if you decide you want some power to the wheels.
You can net around 350whp and whtq on pump gas with just a intake, intercooler, catback, and a pro tune.
Great delivery of the driving experience! I know that's hard to convey over a video but you did a damn good job.
Thanks!
I don't think there's any other automotive youtuber that gives a detailed, nuanced driving experience that makes the viewer feel like they're driving the car rather than watching a review quite as well as Tyler does. Add to that the brilliant production quality of his reviews that's at the level of professional automotive TV shows like Top Gear and you have a channel that's a required viewing for anyone interested in cars.
This sounds like a bot-written sponsored response, but I agree! A lot of well-delivered information for a 19 min video, with no BS. Nice vid. And the first to get me to reconsider the GR, after having my attention caught by the TR.
Just got a 2023 WRB WRX Limited six speed that was BUILT December 2023 for 6 GRAND UNDER msrp. The key fob even says 2024 WRX LMTD model lol and I got 1.9% financing. The MSRP on my Limited WRB WRX was 39k with a few accessories and I got her for 33k!!! I was about to build a 24 Premium but I got this Limited WRB WRX for much less at 6 GRAND UNDER msrp. This is my sixth brand new WRX. I actually also have a 2022 Premium Ignition Red but that one I’m selling soon since the New WRB WRX Limited is perfect!!! The Alcantara Seats really feel so much better than the cloth seats on the Premium. Can’t beat the deal I got.
Could have gotten 3K off msrp on a 2024 Premium Factory order but I didn’t want to wait three months so I took the 2023 Limited that was built December 2023 for 6k UNDER msrp. I feel I made a great choice as it’s my first time getting a Limited Trim WRX. My previous five WRXs were all the premium trim. All bought brand new and the only time I ever got a different car it was a GTI
Great buy! Thats about what I picked my premium up for last summer
Subaru is doing some really good deals right now on the leftover 2023 WRX's. (2023 may seem like they have been on the lot for a long time, but the 2024 only started showing up at dealers 1 montg ago)
You nailed this vid
The video I've been waiting for.
Excellent review. You're the only one to mention dual port injection in the Corolla. Very important feature to have.
Yes, especially as this might be the final gas-powered car many of us will want/ be able to buy. Having to factor in the cost and hassle of port-servicing for the lifetime of the car is worth several thousand bucks.
Thanks - the review I've been waiting for - already knew GRC would be still on top but this confirms it. Not that much a different wheel and bigger brakes could achieve, especially outside track. Using lightweight forged 18" wheels would have been better than 19" wheels.
Subaru really needs to bring back WRX STI FA24 with more than 330 HP to be competitive.. They also need to do something about the new center diff found in 2018+ STIs slowing down acceleration by more than half a sec vs older STIs.
Honestly, the suspension and brakes improved the car a ton. If you were contemplating this or the limited trim, the TR is attractive. I think they should really consider making the TR a package available for low trims though. If I could get one with this suspension and brake setup at $35k-ish... I'd probably still buy the GRC because it's more fun, but I think it would have made the TR much more compelling to the sport compact audience. We'd really need that kind of STI if we're talking $45k!
I was so close to buying a 23 wrx, but the steering was a big let down for me as well as the seats, even in the limited. The aggressive bottom side bolstering with its metal bars (wtf were they thinking) are not forgiving if you have larger legs. I preferred hoping back in my MK6 Jetta after driving the rex in regards to steering and comfort. I like the GR a lot and find it comfortable but could use some more space and an analog dash would be preferred, but to get awd in a manual with an analog brake (looking at you golf r), there isn’t anything else out there being made anymore, I really wish the focus RS, STi, and the Evo (especially) were still around
Wow! You really have some amazing footage and I'm glad you revisited the WRX. Man, I have the Limited and I really wanna feel the TR. I agree with all you said!
If one can find a GRC premium with sport package for MSRP, it would be the better AWD pick over the WRX-TR. The TR failed when Subaru didnt tune the motor to over 300HP.
But I will say, the TR will be more easy to find at MSRP or under. So considering similar prices, it comes down to preferences.
Thanks for sharing the comparison video!
I went from a 22 WRX to a GR Corolla and it’s night and day. The TR seems hard to justify for the same price
It's the right direction for the WRX but they've really priced themselves into more serious competitors!
I just recently did the same thing I’m selling my VB rn I sorta built up trying to make a Sti variant then stopped cause I have 07 Sti as well decided to part ways with my love for Subaru and try Toyota Gr Corolla I been loving every minute of it so far
Thank you for the review! It came out basically how a Wrx and a Sti would compare. The first is better for daily driving, or if you have family, and the Gr is more sporty.
All the modern Subarus don’t have a firm center feel since they have included the steering assist.
Thanks for watching! It does seem like Subaru is at least going in the right direction with the TR. Though I should add that the steering assist was new this year and it didn't affect the steering so I think it has more to deal with how the steering and assist are calibrated. Hopefully they take more cues from the BR-Z sometime!
@@Realistick I remember to an old article about Subaru and Toyota together were developing a new hatchback, people thought it was going to be the new Sti. Iam sure this GR Corolla has something to do with the fact there is no Sti for this generation.
i would buy a base model wrx and build it the way i want to. i prefer built not bought.
Thanks for the review and insight. I ordered a WRX TR in February and mine should be here next week. Unfortunately I was not able to drive a GR Corolla, so it was nice to hear your feedback. The Toyota dealer who would go for MSRP wouldn't let me test drive a GR. (I am 50 year adult) I had to put a deposit, sign a contract and put financing in place order to test drive one. They said I could cancel if I didn't like the test drive. All I could do is sit in the showroom one and start it up. I went to the Subaru dealership next and was happy driving the WRX that I didn't feel the need to go back the Toyota Dealer to buy a car to test drive it and perhaps back out of the deal. It probably backfire on the Toyota dealer than all I had to judge the GR was the interior and the ERX wins that category. The negotiated pricing ended up being slightly cheaper for the TR than the premium GR Corolla it was within 1k and it wasn't the factor in my decision,. I still fell like both cars are solid choices.
Did you read the article on CarBuzz about the guy who “money shifted” his GR with only 500 miles on it? $42,000.00 repair estimate from Toyota. Just for engine repairs. Hard to believe.
@@ubroberts5541 I did read that article yesterday. It was a little shocking at how expensive a replacement motor is. Hopefully for GR owners the motor are reliable. Those costs are what I expect from one of the German manufacturers.
I ended up picking up my TR today. Shortly after I posted that dealer informed me that my delivery date was delayed 2 weeks.
Had a 2017 WRX. Was hoping to step up to the next-gen STI which unfortunately didn't happen. Decided to try out a 2023 BRZ and while it was a blast. I was able to find a 2024 GRC CE at MSRP. I could not pass that up!
What’s your main thoughts on the GR vs your VA? Anything you miss about the wrx?
@@sneeakysteve Out of the box the GR is better than the VA. I did the typical mods nearly everyone does. Cobb Stage 1, shifter stop and bushings to enhance the driving experience. The VA was pretty floaty and eventually went with coilovers. I do love how the GRC is so planted and it just grips. Probably one thing I miss about the WRX is the trunk space. The GR's is definitely smaller compared to the competition.
Might be no sti but with just an intake and e85 tune you can push around 400hp. The fa24 is pretty damn amazing compared to the older subaru motors.
@@KushestWRXThe VB is definitely the more tunable car no doubt.
Personally I'd still take the wrx over the grc. The practicality, under stressed engine, symetrical awd, and ability to huy for UNDER msrp is too tempting. GRCs within 200 miles of me are still grossly overpriced. 45-50k for core trim.
All valid points, I don't think II'd buy another GRC if it costed me 45-50k either. But I do hope you get the chance to drive one if you're in the market, it really is worth the msrp when you get it on a nice road and in other regions, it's much cheaper than that.
@@Realistick I would totally consider it if I found one for msrp.
@@diallo1347 I’d try looking up the highest rated dealers in neighboring states or cities and give them a call!
I would trust the G16e-gts in the GRC over the FA24 series of engine in the WRX any day. The G16e-gts has already proven to be a good engine in the GR Yaris for years before it was put into the GRC. On the other hand, there have been a lot of owners having issues with FA24 series engines.
If you can't find a GRC at MSRP within 200 miles, expand your search range and buy a plane ticket if needed.
There's a dealer close to me that is giving 3500 off msrp on a core gr. Kim's no bull in Laurel Mississippi
Hi ,I just recently bought a new 24 vb wrx ,it had 11km on the odometer,,,drove it home from dealership around 10km in reasonably good traffic stop n go at lights,,,got home and all of a sudden fair bit off smoke came from under the hood ,,,retailer said it was normal break in ,,,however I'm still concerned about what that was initially,,,there has been no other time smoke has come out ,,,would appreciate anybody's help out there thank you
Subaru knows people will tune the WRX and its a phenomenal platform to start from. Redline is actually 6200rpm in the WRX. Alot of people change the redline to 7000rpm and it really makes a difference. The new fa24 turbo seems has a way higher response to basic bolt ons and the factory block HP limit based on the 1 tuner ( in MD i believe) that Im aware of thats pushed it, i think was around 670 wheel hp. You could buy a base or premium and spend the $7-9k on aftermarket mods and make the wrx far superior. Thats of course with installing stuff yourself and only paying for a professional dyno tune. I feel like Subaru should have offered the DCCD/LSD/STI 6 speed and then I would have been all over the new TR but for what You get its just not worth it over a base, premium or limited. Subaru really worked hard on the new wrx engine and chassis and coming from 20 years of Subaru/STI ownership, the baseline for performance is higher than ever. Havent been able to drive the GR yet as my location hasnt gotten any that werent already sold..looking to as soon as possible though.
A much more fair comparison this time around. Still decent trans and diffs though which is a shame.
I know the GR is a performance car but some people are reporting around 20 MPG’s combined. What say you? Between the 2, the GR is the one I would pick for hooligan fun!
its definitely not 20 combined. I get 24 mpg and I live in NYC. Made a strip to Florida and I was getting 33-36 on the highway.
@@liudxdxI live in queens and have been considering the gr, hows the experience been? Clutch in traffic an issue at all? Thanks!
@@vmdtcgit’s so fun to drive, light and nimble, comfortable. Clutch is ok, I’ve driving manual cars my whole life so it’s not a big deal for me
@@liudxdx awesome to hear that Im most likely going to the dealer this week, hows the ride height over speed bumps and pot holes? I drive the conduit and theres some nasty ones on there
@@vmdtcg clearance is high cos you know it’s “rally car” actually higher than some sedans. But the suspension is on the firm side.
The wrx with just an intake and e85 tune you'll get around 400hp.
A ots tune on the stock car will give the wrx over 300hp as well.
Ya, I'm completely biased because I have the wrx but I'll pit mine up against a gr corolla any day
Hmm, If you’re in the US, I’m doing a travel series this summer where I am comparing the GR to various cars and I want to put it up against a modified WRX!
The WRX looks nicer but the Corolla is better overall IMO.
The TR pricepoint is a tough sell when they're making upgrades for the enthusiast community and it still comes out more expensive and less fun than the GR. They must be banking on availability to carry sales.
I dont think many of these cars will stay stock anyways, so its just preference. Toyota slacked on availability early on which hurt them alot.
More cars stay stock than you'd think! I used to sell subaurs and most trade-in WRXs were stock or extremely close to it. That might change ten years down the road when the warranty is gone anyway. Toyota really did shoot themselves in the foot with that move :(
Still doesnt change the transmission problems
The GR Corolla is a blast to drive but at well over $50,000 here in Canada, I had a lot of issue with its interior materials, quality and the general feel of cheapness which is present in my new 2024 WRX but not at the same level and the Subaru, although still shockingly expensive, is still cheaper than the Toyota. A Circuit Edition here in Canada before taxes in $57,000. No. That is not money well spent.
Stiffen the suspension? Like it needed to be 😂 what it needed was adaptive suspension to make it a daily driver car came one SUBARU ❤
It is a performance version of a performance car. An adaptive setup could be nice (more $) but the point is to improve handling, and a more firm suspension will do that!
How does the gr corolla with a 1.6 3 cylinder turbo outperform horsepower than the 4 cylinder 2.4 liter turbo in the wrx… isn’t that wild just from a numbers perspective..
You’re looking at it from the surface. The Toyota is pushing SIGNIFICANTLY more boost. The WRX is under stressed and far more capable when tuned.
would love to see a vid on the BRZ tS
Me too, I'll be old enough to get Subaru press cars this summer so hopefully I can secure one!
Maybe it's just near me, but you still can't even find a GR and if you did you are never paying MSRP or below.
Definitely based on region! If you really want one, you’ll probably have to travel (as unfortunate as that is)
Here in Canada unfortunately GR Corolla's still going over sticker.
Am I the only one that thinks a hatch is harder to live with? GR Corolla sedan would be great.
Gr corolla still is the better value for what you get plus the reliability
2024 Gr Corolla I saw had a 10k markup
You have to call around! I see some dealers doing that and others (in the same state) sticking at msrp. They have a supply now, there's not much reason to pay markup.
I think they GR is still king. I honestly do not thing the TR WRX is worth it
That's funny you call dealer ripoffs Market adjustments LOL
I usually call them markups🤕
WHITE Hot take on the current gen WRX:
The "less fun out of the box" and "no STI" approach makes a ton of sense. Two reasons:
1) People (not everyone!) have always demanded a more refined and comfortable everyday WRX. This is easily the most comfortable and daily-able WRX ever. But y'all are correct, it comes at the expense of some fun! However...
2) Subaru knows that a huge percentage of buyers are going to tune their WRX to high heaven. Instead of building the most fun "off the lot" car, why not invest that R&D into creating the most solid platform for tuning ever? At 13psi peak boost, that 2.4 is SUPER unstressed (vs the prior gen's 23psi peak boost). So far these are proving extremely reliable to tune, and ridiculously fast. Not to be THAT guy, but you can unlock STI performance with the VB for as little as $1000-3000k. Meanwhile, the GR is almost untunable and is surprisingly prone to issues (the recent Savagegeese video goes into more detail about this!)
I really respect and admire the Corolla GR! It's the more fun "off the lot" car, no question. But I think Subaru nailed the brief in terms of delivering a better daily car for one audience, and a more solid tuning platform with a WAY higher tuning potential for another.
Great review as always!
Over here in Canada, the RS starts at 43,000 CAD, where the GR Corolla CORE starts at 51,000 CAD. Does this change things?
The GR Corolla Core starts at just over $46k in Canada.

An unfortunate truth for track use, we really need an STI for this price point!
WRX by a mile bro. Way more practical, nicer inside as you said, nicer made (even my buddy's golf R 2023, feels like a piece of cheap plastic inside). AND I am 435hp with an intake and exhaust.
Why I chose the GRC over a Subie that isn’t an STi? Reliability.
Lol guy convincing himself that the GR is a better buy
Honda and Porsche please bring back a manual hand brake.
3-cylinder wonder vs ugly duckling, the choices the choices..
Subaru more practical and better overall
Haven’t seen one new WRX in my city. We get the WRX wagon here but they are less common than the sedan.
Dear Subaru designers, please remove the non functional exterior black plastic cladding on the scheduled refresh. PLEASE DON'T SIMPLY PAINT THEM GLOSS BLACK! PS, Please tone down the rear bumper, even the cool kids don't think its cool.

23 years old (so I still classify as a kid lol) and took delivery of the TR last month… I like the cladding since I live around a lot of dirt roads.
And to be honest if you hate it that much get a last gen, the depreciation makes it a lot cheaper and they made a ton.
This guy doesn’t understand cars, the Subaru is being held back on paper on purpose… what’s the WHP for both.
Shucks, you’ve missed the point (the GR isn’t just quicker…) and forgotten the golden rule of “winning’s winning.” The WRX is slower, regardless of whp or half-assed insults to a random UA-camr! Have a nice day🤟
GR Corolla here is $60k. That's msrp. Why would anyone buy that?
GRC uglier than the WRX lmao
Subaru, get rid of fake rallyboi plastic cladding, this isnt a Crosstrek.
Fix that disgusting rear bumper.
Get rid of that terrible infotainment screen.
Give it more power.
Where is the STI??
The WRX is awful, like it's always been.
Very constructive and well-informed comment.
The wheel wells look dumb on the WRX. They must be taking notes from the Chevy pickups.🤮
