These engines move a ton under hard acceleration. Stiffer engine mounts will probably help with the occassional shift grinding. My GR Carolla Circuit Edition is being built currently, cant wait!
That’s probably true regarding mounts and bushings. But they should still account for the movement when deciding how to build an design the car. Still a great car but a bit annoying. And also seems like it doesn’t effect all of the cars.
You're a fool is it going to spend $39,000 437 the Chipmunks I'd rather have the Honda Type R it looks nicer and it's much faster and it's a real motor
Linkage actuated shifters are inherently more robust by design. It's a good reminder to point out as the car gets older. People that have driven some older cars with worn cables will know they tend to stretch, though it is concerning that a new car is already exhibiting these issues.
The issue comes from too soft gearbox and engine mounts. The gearbox simply moves too much. This was probably done to reduce NVH from the vibrating 3-cylinder. Upgrading to stiffer mounts makes the shifts way better.
My first car was a 1994 Honda Accord DX (5-speed manual) with crank windows and no power locks, it weighed 2756 pounds, and had zero technology; it was incredible. Since then, I've had all sorts of cars, from a GTI to Wrangler to a Camaro SS 1LE; since the Honda, I hadn't recaptured the pure joy 16-year old me took from the DX...until the GR Corolla. Regarding the screen display inconsistency: if you press the lock button on your remote, one time, it will lock your vehicle BUT when you press it a second time the vehicle remains locked AND it cuts the power to a bunch of things in the car. I don’t remember the technical naming of this feature. So GUESS right now is if you are sometimes pressing the lock button once, and sometimes pressing it twice, then maybe that second time is cutting the power to what is keeping that menu cached in memory and on your display and then requiring you to go and find it again. The best way for me to explain it would be if you put your computer in sleep mode versus actually shutting down your computer… If that makes sense to more people. No idea if this is the case but just maybe you could try it and let us know in the comments. I don’t know where I heard this information and my only validity to this info is when I double press my lock button, then my headlights turn off on my 2016 4Runner if I forgot to turn them off… yes I know they will eventually turn off but when you hit the lock button the second time it’s immediate. Right now I have a change to get a circuit edition but they are doing a $10k (Canadian) markup plus adding a few options that I don’t want so that’s about $17k Canadian with tax on top of the car price (which is about $12,500 USD) and I don’t know if I can swallow that pill because that makes it the same price as the GR Surpa…not that I want the Supra because I have a family and in emergencies or special occasions I’d like to take my son out in the GR Corolla if I decide to buy it.
Yep ! A needed point of view. My coworker has one with 6 miles and a week and a half later he has 700 miles. He is enjoying the NEWNESS for sure. So we shall see, how he is after 1400 miles.
Love my Premium. No grinds or overheating. Apple CarPlay sucks, but it does in my Raptor too. Installed the AWE Tour version exhaust and definitely sounds good.
Im extremely picky when it comes to the sound system in cars. The system in my GR core is completely serviceable, it could use a bit more low end. Coming from a 2017 GT Mustang with the Shaker system, its definitely not on that level, but with a little bit of tuning and fader adjustment, I have no gripes. All the reviews I saw said the same thing about the system being bad, and truthfully its really not. Overall, great review and I'm glad I'm not the only one who wishes the seat could adjust lower.
Great video. Enjoyed your review almost as much as all the hate comments telling you to learn to drive. People love talking shit, probably half your age with a tenth of the experience . I have a circuit waiting for me, and will be back in the Bay Area within a year. Looking forward to some fun rides!
I think you missed a few key points and went a little too hard on others. but all in all, pretty accurate assessment. my opinion is that this is THE perfect daily driver that can also serve as a BACKUP autocross car or backup weekend track car. 1.) where the hell is the center console? (lack of storage) 2.) wireless charger placement and functionality (you hit the heated seat button almost every time you put your phone in it and it rarely works) 3.) 30:70 mode is garbage, creates more push that 60:40 4.) the stereo is fine for an economy hatch back 5.) the infotainment is also on par for an economy car ( this isn't a BMW M2 or Porsche Cayman) 6.) its WAY too quiet in stock form 7.) exhaust sits far too close to rear diff clutch packs which causes a majority of the overheating issues 8.) the piano black interior inserts should have been soft touch material as they scratch too easy and look like shit after just a few wipe downs. 9.) factory brake pads are great for street but are not suitable for track
Yeah, the thing that really grinds my gears and no pun intended is that this is a vehicle that really should’ve had no flaws like this from the factory. You know we shouldn’t have to buy a car that we have to fix to get it back to par.
Stiffer lower torque mount fixes the grinding gears issue almost completely. The overheating clutch pack was somewhat mitigated by a firmware update to the sensor. Apparently it was reporting too high temps. This was fixed some time last year. It will still overheat, but it takes more abuse now.
My issue is that they put out a product that really needed more R&D before being perfect. If they had done that the GRC would have been legendary from day 1
One good thing I love about the GR Corolla is we don't have fake engine noise pumped into the car. I love being able to hear the real engine, and exhaust where it's' not artificially produced.
I love manual transmissions. I work midnights and sleep during the day. My kids don't know how to drive it and I don't have to worry about waking up and they're out with it somewhere.
@@CollinMac96 Thats interesting since It doesnt seem to be a "known issue." Case and point, read some of the other comments on this video. Many people claiming its my lack of driving skill causing the grinds. lol
Excellent in depth owner's review here. However, I will definitely be keeping my Veloster N with DCT for $10 grand less. There hasn't been a car yet that has given me the excitement and fun that the Veloster N has. The last car that came close was my first car, a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI.
Have had my gr for 2 months now and i agree with you on pretty much everything. Def loses a little power after 5k rpm but man does she love being in that 3-5k rpm. The gears take time to get used too and u do get that occasional annoying grind but honestly hasnt bothered me much. I highly recommend as this is one of the most satisfying canyon runner i have ever owned. And im comming from an audi tts
Great video. I’m a die hard hot hatch guy. Currently drive a Veloster N that I love and was 33.5k. A lot I like about the GR and some things I don’t like such as no armrest, bad sound system, no adjustable shocks, cheap looking interior, no rear spoiler on a core. But at the prices by me in SoCal with mark ups and ridiculous dealer add ons in Carlsbad they have one with a dealer add ons that are 8k charging $3995 for tint. I can’t throw down 50k for a core and 55k for a circuit with all the mark ups. Hopefully in a year or so dealers will stop the nonsense.
I agree the added dealer markup situation on cars today is getting crazy. I really wish things were different but they’re not. The only way we can combat. This is to not buy cars over sticker.
I love my Veloster N, but I'm next on the wait-list at my dealer for a GR Corolla at MSRP (placed a deposit in March 2022). I feel like there's a good chance that I'll regret trading my VN in, but I don't know if I can walk away from this opportunity to buy a GRC with no markup. First world dilemma, I know, but I've been losing sleep over this!
@@drumflip1253 I ended up passing on the GR Corolla. Super cool car, but not as track-ready out of the box as the N cars, and I'd rather spend the money on more seat time.
I'm looking at this as an "additional" fun car. The pricing with surcharge is pretty insane right now. Can't really see spending $55k for a hatchback. That said, I'm really wanting to have a fun hot hatch to drive. I have a real soft spot for GTIs, just not sure where I want to go with this rn.
Man, that issue with de digital cluster not saving the tire pressure widget is driving me nuts, happy to see I'm not alone! Also get the gear grinding sometimes...
Thanks for an honest review. I'm glad there are so many choices in these hot hatches. I'm still a GTI / R fan as they are so well sorted but like the potentially better Toyota reliability.
I drive my GRC like i stole it everyday. Not once has it grinded a gear in the 5000 miles of abuse i have put it through. I would get rid of the heavy shift knob toyota puts on it and replace it with either an aluminum knob, if you still want some weight, or a delrin knob. To much weight can hide the ques the tranmission is giving you about how it wants to be shifted. You will be able to feel and learn the behavior of the transmissions and what it likes. Take some time to learn how tranmissions work and really try to feel each component doing its thing. I have tought many ppl around me how to stop grinding gears over time. this works trust.
All the owners who do experience grinding (from time to time) isn’t because they don’t know how to drive or the weight of the knob is the culprit. It has to do with the fact that cable linkage isn’t as accurate as direct linkage. They are all slightly different lengths but all within a certain spec from factory. Normally this is fine but when you start to shift quickly, the heat can start to cause the metal cables to stretch and expand. Think of a suspension bridge. It’s lower in summer months and higher in winter. Based on that fact, shifting timing can change ever so slightly causing a grind from time to time.
@@PointShiftDrive I'm only speaking from my own experiences. I can see how those things could cause a grind to occur. And if they are the culprit, I guess I am lucky my car is not affected. I also own an mr2 that is also cable shifted. about an inch of play in each direction and I don't grind that either. 🤷♂Maybe its just luck.
As far as infotainment systems I have no issues with it. I actually really like it. I’ve got a 24. Circuit and I Love my JBL stereo. It’s got a nice small amplifier under the passenger seat.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who gets that random gear grind when shifting. Definitely something Toyota may need to fix in the future. As far as the dash not saving your parameters, I think it might only save in the "Custom" section. Mine doesn't reset at all after I changed it there. And as far as the clutch packs overheating. I think JustDriven found the best solution. They did a custom exhaust that went to an oval shape by the sensor and then heat wrapped it to prevent the exhaust from overheating the sensor. Since that change, I don't believe they have had the "2WD limp mode" happen on track anymore. Next big issue for this car is the oil temps... Even in colder weather, the oil gets really hot when on track. An upgraded oil cooler is almost a necessity for track driving.
Im pretty sure over the next few months we will hear more and more about people grinding gears... There seems to be enough owners experiencing it already that I am sure it will get more notice. As for the 2wd limp mode situation, im not sold yet that the attended fixes are final. we will have to wait and see. Thanks for watching btw.
Thank your for the video highs and lows for the GRC! Not sure why you'd want the tire light to be constantly on, if your tire blows it's just going to blow. I do use that feature, but to only check the tire pressures once a week or so. As for the transmission, you need to drive a 915 transmission from an air cooled Porsche 911 pre 1986...once you conquer that, you'll love any transmission...LOL! Thanks again for the info, too bad the seat doesn't go lower, and I did hear the horn from another video...that thing should be illegal in any car, you might as well just Yell!
915s are a love it or hate it proposition. It’s also not responsible to not factor in the fact that the 915 is a very old transmission. Just hard to compare. But yes, if you can master that, everything else is piece of cake. 🎂
I have the same issue with grinding gears, especially with shifting from like second to sixth. I switched from the upgraded knob to a smaller shift knob from Cusco, helps me personally not do this as much.
@@GeraldPUR it's not normal shifting, it's when you accelerate hard and then try to go from 2nd to 6th. It actually completely goes away with the Cusco reinforced engine pitching stopper, makes me think it has something to do with engine pitching in harder acceleration. This was also apparently an issue with the Yaris, which is why it was made for that even before the GR Corolla came out. Gearbox does not like to be rushed, you're probably not short shifting fast enough to experience it.
Honestly don't know why you're trying to skip so many gears. Honestly isn't much more effort to just go through them one by one and most cars really don't like to skip gears much less 3 of them.
@@nateTrh 11k miles in, never happens anymore. I used to have a car with taller gears and had gotten in the habit of going 1st 2nd 6th. This car really doesn’t like that.
Good video. My Fiesta ST was also annoyingly dead up top until I got a tune onto it. Bummer about clutch packs overheating. Fords has similar on track problems with overheating brakes and engine that were hard/annoying to fix.
Agree with everything said but that gear grinding issue is weird. I have not had a single issue with hard driving and shifting (although I have only 1400 miles so let’s hope one doesn’t develop). Maybe there are tolerance discrepancies on the “tightness” of the shifter cables from car to car. I have a POV video on my channel if you don’t think I’m shifting quick enough to make this happen 😅
Yeah.... It might not be affecting everyone. But just read some of the comments. others are having the issue as well. Either way, I know its not me. I have owned 34 cars since I was 16 and only had grinding issues with 2. But regardless, I just wanted to help others who are looking to jump into the platform. Hope you enjoyed the video!
@@PointShiftDrive Yeah it is certainly concerning. Hopefully the dealer can adjust the linkage or something to alleviate the issue. This is my first manual daily driver so I’m sure you have far more experience than me. Love the video. Did you install the CE wing yourself?
@@PointShiftDrive Thank you! You as well. It has been great to me thus far. I have not shelled out for the wing yet as I can’t find the part number for the hole template, and I don’t have the balls to drill into the trunk on a new car 😬
Good to know the JBL sound system is not worth the price difference. In Canada for MY2024, it's only on the circuit edition which is 10k more than the core version.
As someone who’s hopping to own one of these, I have something I want to ask. I live in Canada and our roads are less than ideal, so I’ve been saving up for a sporty car that I can drive year round. I’ve thought of a newer WRX, but I really don’t like how they look now and I hear their engines are still really finicky. So I’m leaning towards the GR Corolla, since I think it looks great, has really good power and has 4 wheel drive, so I won’t get stuck in the winter very often. The only problem is that this car is only available in a manual transmission. I’ve never driven anything with a stick shift before and I’m wondering if it’s a good choice to start learning?
i got to about @14:25 of your video and you mention it's running out of steam up top. Could it be that your lower octane fuel in California is causing it to pull timing at higher RPMs, especially as you head for the hills to drive it harder? This could be made very prevalent in a turbo car, especially when it's relying almost entirely on boost to feel that punchy. which this tiny 3 cylinder is. It will pull timing, it will limit boost. at that last 1/3 of the tachometer. I can imagine with 90 or 91 octane. Especially if you went up to a mountain road and gained 2000ft or more. Perhaps try an E40 re-map and see what happens instead when you eliminate knock or lean scenarios, or even over enrichment as factors.
I don’t think it has to do with the fuel. I think it might have to do with just the way it’s mapped. Because it tapers off the boost as the RPMs rise. But if you really care about that, you can tune and change it to what you want.
@@PointShiftDrive all engines are designed to taper off in higher rpm. the modern ones feel so much more apparent because they're tiny. but they're also so advanced compared to what we were doing in the 90s and 2000s. ask a race team to make a 300hp 3 cylinder 1.6 back in 1995 and you'd end up with a 16,000 rpm bastard of a thing.
Just got a 2024 Core. The screen settings have to be set, or you will lose them. If you set them properly, they permanently change. NO gear grinding to be found. There IS a slight problem with rev hang, though. I drove mine every day in 90 degree heat. No overheating. Never breaks a sweat. I can run it on the track or park it near the courthouse. It's my daily driver. [per the car's designer] The turbo blows at 25.5 psi max! (That's what a 911 Turbo blows, albeit with TWO turbos and many more cubes!) The middle exhaust tube has a gate that cracks open at 4450 rpm, reducing back pressure for the turbo and it feels like it was launched from a cannon! My colleague has a Cayenne. I used Expert Mode and dumped him on his ass!
You'd think after 4 or 5 years of everyone saying Toyota screens are weak they'd at least make SOME effort to improve them. Then again, the is the Corolla company... no big changes as long as people keep buying
@PointShiftDrive pretty much day 1. Now it's not all the time but if I get lazy shifting into 3rd when the car is cold so like especially winter. I get punished immediately. I'm looking at getting into one of these. Interesting that it seems to be similar
@@PointShiftDrive agreed. I mean it's not all the time but it gets your attention.when it happens. And it always seems to happen when there is a bunch of people around lol
All I can say is Honda has got shifters figured out. For me it started with a '85 CRXsi . The GR shifter has a solid feel and I like it. Really like the angry 3 cylinder.
They absolutely do. Cheap speakers can save as much as 20-50lbs depending on the system. The magnets are the culprit. Manufactures are always trying to balance performance and cost. Speakers are an easy place to get some much needed weight savings. Do some research;)
I don't know what you're talking about. In my 500 km of driving so far, I have never ground a gear. I had more grinding of gears in my 2020 STI by far! I am planning on custom upgrades to the linkage to reduce the front to back throw, but otherwise, this is a pretty damn good shifter. I know where I am at all times.
I had 3000 miles on mine. I think overtime. The cable stretched a little bit and made shifting an accurate. You wouldn’t notice of driving normally it’s only when you’re driving fast and doing a lot of shifting. If you aren’t effected, 👍
@@PointShiftDrive Other than my STI, all of my manual transmission cars have been cable linkages (all Japanese). I have never noticed any degredation in shift action in any of my cars, even after 50,000km. If there is an issue, adjust it. If there is no adjustment issue, learn how to drive. That being said, I do have the Circuit Edition shift knob installed on my car. I have always preferred a weighted shift knob.
Agree and find gearbox so precise and easy. Only had my Corolla GR for less than a week and travelled 320Kms, and happy as with it for sure. Owned a Yaris GR previously but the 5 door guise and extras I find make for a better car…for my daily and purpose. Thank you Toyota for a modern day fun hot hatch. An enthusiast from New Zealand
Im have one Im supposed to pick up tomorrow for 500 under msrp and I can't decide if I should. I'm in a 22 civic si that only has 24k miles and my biggest worry is the interior. Im a bigger guy 6'1 240 with broad shoulders, its a bit snug .Damn decisions.
"If thats important to you" hit hard and got me really asking what is important, im looking at a "new" car and am looking at a GR Corola or a Ford RS. Any suggestions?
The problem with the RS is that it’s just too hard-core for a daily. Suspensions is really hard to deal with. Also it’s not as practical as you might think the interiors is very tight. I’d go GR Corolla all the way.
The manual is fine even with cable actuated. Only kids will miss a gear in this thing. The drive modes are very noticeable guys. I own a full spec Core and love it. True JDM car built in Japan *** you get a full tank of gas with only $35 😂😂
7:45 I thought I was the only one with this issue its very annoying. For me it happens only with the tire pressure gage as well hopefully they have an update or something.
The STI is more connected feeling during the slot motion. The GR is feels good in the shift motion. both actions are good... its just different. I prefer the STI because you can tell metal is moving a gear. To me, thats more connected. BUT cable systems are cheaper and easier to engineer because you dont have to worry about interior compromises. plus its cheaper to make. The GR's shifter box looks 3D printed.
The infotainment system and dash gauges and nannies (like lane assist tugging at the steering wheel) are garbage. Hard to configure and navigate and they continually change as you've mentioned. But as a daily driver (not track car) the GR has an excellent handling/ride/steering combination and I think the seats are fine too.
My question is this: Is this car a good daily driver or is it too much for that? Do the different drive modes allow this car to be a good daily driver?
I really want one of these things but I want to test drive before I buy it. It's tough to find but I'm on the fence and want the test drive to make the decision for me.
@@PointShiftDrive Got it, I've called 6 dealerships so far and they all have some coming in a month or so or have sold the ones they have so they're not drivable. I'll keep looking.
Track down a GR owner. I had a tech from a local Toyota shop follow me home. He looked the car over, "you want to go for a ride"? We drove around a bit "wanna drive, just don't bounce it off the rev limiter". In my experience car guys are just that.

I can't get behind the grinding gears. All if not most fwd cars use that design. You're on your own with that comment. At the price point the car is very competitive.
The GRC is a great car. Just don’t be surprised if your trans needs a rebuild at some point. And no, the CTR doesn’t have the issue with grinding gears. At all. I’ve driven both cars extensively and still prefer the AWD of the GRC. Just wish it was slightly more refined.
I find that really annoying when you really want to lower the seat almost to the floor and you can't I wonder if there's some sort of modification for that,
The touch screen must be nicely integrated into the armature, I don't need a TV on the front window for 40.000 dollars. Toyota should put 3-cylinder engine into motorcycle and will be perfect.
I’ve driven a type r but not the type s. Assuming they drive similarly, I’d say the real question is do you need 4wd? Personally I like the characteristics of the GR for the street and in all weather conditions.
I traded mine in for over MSRP. So it’s not all doom and gloom with the ADM wave. But I agree people should think twice about paying over. Once supply meets demand, it’s game over for owners
9:17 I have to be that person to roast you lmao, don't care how long you been driving manuals, I got a red one too since January put over 2.5k miles on it, about 100 miles on the twisty roads not a single gear grind yet lol
I also wanna roast him because I have had a Porsche 986 Boxster with a five speed manual for a year going on year 2 before owning that car I have never driven a stick shift even in the learning process of learning how to drive that car I never grinned the gears still haven’t but part of that was because I am a visual learner. I watched my dad I watched how he did the clutch and how they did the shifter and I replicated that to a T I am 23 I grew watching my dad drive and shift his manual transmission Porsche 911s so that’s probably why I’m so good at not grinding the gears

Nice to see an honest review, I really appreciate it! Probably still gonna buy one too 😅😅
back in the late 1980s i had my toyota 4x4 pick up truck now that i am a senior i want to be a kid at heart again this gr corolla is great
me too.. My GR is just like this one.
Got one on the way and I’m stoked for the GR.
Excellent! Enjoy
Congrats. Awesome ride
The base radio is the worst stereo I've heard in 20 years, though I've been on B&O systems for the last decade until this.
@@spinnetti I mean compared to some systems I've had in the past, it's total trash but serviceable.
Great video. Enjoyed your review almost as much as all the hate comments telling you to learn to drive. People love talking shit, probably half your age with a tenth of the experience . I have a circuit waiting for me, and will be back in the Bay Area within a year. Looking forward to some fun rides!
Enjoy your car. It’s a fun little monster 😈
I think you missed a few key points and went a little too hard on others. but all in all, pretty accurate assessment. my opinion is that this is THE perfect daily driver that can also serve as a BACKUP autocross car or backup weekend track car.
1.) where the hell is the center console? (lack of storage)
2.) wireless charger placement and functionality (you hit the heated seat button almost every time you put your phone in it and it rarely works)
3.) 30:70 mode is garbage, creates more push that 60:40
4.) the stereo is fine for an economy hatch back
5.) the infotainment is also on par for an economy car ( this isn't a BMW M2 or Porsche Cayman)
6.) its WAY too quiet in stock form
7.) exhaust sits far too close to rear diff clutch packs which causes a majority of the overheating issues
8.) the piano black interior inserts should have been soft touch material as they scratch too easy and look like shit after just a few wipe downs.
9.) factory brake pads are great for street but are not suitable for track
On the gear grinding it can easily be fix by removing delay valves on slave cylinder. The fk8 type r has same issue
Manuals make the best theft deterrents 😂
Can confirm the gear grinding was there. I encountered more than twice when just normally upshifting. Car's at 600 miles now
Its pretty interesting because I think* I am the first to report this issue. Yet it doesnt seem to be effecting everyone.
@@PointShiftDriveyou aren’t. There’s forums of people that have reported this back when the gr hit the sales floor
@@CollinMac96 Thats interesting since It doesnt seem to be a "known issue." Case and point, read some of the other comments on this video. Many people claiming its my lack of driving skill causing the grinds. lol
@TrackandBuild you got a GR Corolla now as well?
Excellent in depth owner's review here. However, I will definitely be keeping my Veloster N with DCT for $10 grand less. There hasn't been a car yet that has given me the excitement and fun that the Veloster N has. The last car that came close was my first car, a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI.
Thanks for sharing

@@danlee3939 cool hope you love it
@@drumflip1253 I ended up passing on the GR Corolla.
You are in good company 😂
Thanks for an honest review. I'm glad there are so many choices in these hot hatches. I'm still a GTI / R fan as they are so well sorted but like the potentially better Toyota reliability.
So many great cars out there today. Consider ourselves lucky in this golden age of enthusiast cars. Drive what you like. :)
thank thanks for watching!
I have also encountered the grinding, especially going from 2nd to 3rd
Feels unfinished. Too bad because it’s awesome other than a few little things.
As far as infotainment systems I have no issues with it. I actually really like it. I’ve got a 24. Circuit and I Love my JBL stereo. It’s got a nice small amplifier under the passenger seat.
That’s upgraded from model year 2023 then. Or at least the core I had. Glad you like it!
Excellent review
Glad you liked it!
I have the same issue with grinding gears, especially with shifting from like second to sixth. I switched from the upgraded knob to a smaller shift knob from Cusco, helps me personally not do this as much.
feels like this could be a larger problem especially as the cars get older and do more track work.
Learn to drive guys. It's a fully mechanical manual. I've have not had any issues even driving it hard and fast shifting. 😅
I had a similar issue with the focus st, id go back into neutral, clutch out then clutch back in
I like your video very much. It’s a pity that Toyota in Taiwan does not import and sell this car.
Yeah. There are lots of cars we don’t get here in the US that the rest of world gets. The way of auto manufacturing financials
Good video. My Fiesta ST was also annoyingly dead up top until I got a tune onto it. Bummer about clutch packs overheating. Fords has similar on track problems with overheating brakes and engine that were hard/annoying to fix.
I bet a tune on the party ST is super fun
@@ThomasTwomey yea. The CE wing is easy to install. Congrats on the ride. Enjoy the car. It’s really 👍
Lucky prices are way down now.
Best review ever! If I wasn’t broke I’d get one 😢
🙏 thank you
As someone who’s hopping to own one of these, I have something I want to ask.
If you like the car, get one. It’s about as easy a manual as you can possibly drive.
Really appreciate your video. Same question: what would you say comparing this to a CTR for beginner shift drivers?@@PointShiftDrive
i got to about @14:25 of your video and you mention it's running out of steam up top.
Not every car will have every problem. Sounds like you mostly lucked out. Great car, enjoy!
Adding friction modifiers to the trans may help if its grinding,, i remember the honda guys and miata guys would use it and it worked magic.
You'd think after 4 or 5 years of everyone saying Toyota screens are weak they'd at least make SOME effort to improve them. Then again, the is the Corolla company... no big changes as long as people keep buying
I think there are some versions coming in 24 that solve much of these kinds of complaints. We’ll see.
This car is still great even with its flaws, cant wait to see if they fix some of the issues in future model years...
Agreed.

My fe1 si 2023 grinds 3rd if you are gentle with it in the winter. It feel wrong shifting it aggressively when regular driving.
When did your car start doing that?
@PointShiftDrive pretty much day 1. Now it's not all the time but if I get lazy shifting into 3rd when the car is cold so like especially winter. I get punished immediately. I'm looking at getting into one of these. Interesting that it seems to be similar

All I can say is Honda has got shifters figured out. For me it started with a '85 CRXsi . The GR shifter has a solid feel and I like it. Really like the angry 3 cylinder.
Speakers add weight? Dude you're crazy if you think speakers are gonna impact a cars performance 🤣🤣🤣
Only had my Corolla GR for less than a week and travelled 320Kms, and happy as with it for sure. similar boat here, what did you decide to do?
"If thats important to you" hit hard and got me really asking what is important, im looking at a "new" car and am looking at a GR Corola or a Ford RS. Any suggestions?
The problem with the RS is that it’s just too hard-core for a daily. Suspensions is really hard to deal with. Also it’s not as practical as you might think the interiors is very tight. I’d go GR Corolla all the way.
I’m struggling with wether trade my 21 sti for gr corolla or not. I can get with 1- 2k markup in my area
I think the experience isn’t different enough to warrant a change. Unless you are just wanting something new.
Sounds like someone needs to update the cables like they did with the k series.
Possibly. But it doesn’t bode well for a brand new car.
Good thing I live somewhere cold as fuck, once I get mine the snow should keep the wet clutch packs cold 😂

That’s cool that you go over the cable actuated aspect, how does it compare to shifting an STI which is rod actuated (if you’ve driven one)?
The STI is more connected feeling during the slot motion. The GR is feels good in the shift motion. both actions are good... its just different. I prefer the STI because you can tell metal is moving a gear. To me, thats more connected. BUT cable systems are cheaper and easier to engineer because you dont have to worry about interior compromises. plus its cheaper to make. The GR's shifter box looks 3D printed.
@@PointShiftDrive Wow, thanks for the perspective!
The infotainment system and dash gauges and nannies (like lane assist tugging at the steering wheel) are garbage. Hard to configure and navigate and they continually change as you've mentioned. 9:17 I have to be that person to roast you lmao, don't care how long you been driving manuals, I got a red one too since January put over 2.5k miles on it, about 100 miles on the twisty roads not a single gear grind yet lol
hahaha... whatever makes you happy. thanks for checking out the video!
@@PointShiftDrive Ive owned and driven many manual cars, every car is slightly different, you just gotta learn their characteristics, just saying.
@@90sbuickguy84 I’m 45 years old. I have owned 34 manuals in my life. Only had grinding issues on 2 cars (separated by 15 years). So yeah. Ok sure it’s my poor technique
