- In this video, I show how I professionally color case harden with my homemade equipment that only cost about $100.
This is all of my professional equipment and where to get it.

Was just suggested you video. I have one model 12 almost ready to restore and a second that I'm accumulating parts to also restore. Interesting watching your process. Thanks.
Thanks for the compliment, in the process of restoring a Browning bar make sure you subscribe to get the notification when it's uploaded.
Would it be worth it / safe to case harden an AKM? My thought is it would be extremely unique, one of a kind. Main concern is safety, don't want the gun blowing up. Thoughts?
It's hard to say if it would be safe. The steel for the receiver is 4140 and there is a lot of controversy about it becoming brittle after the quench. I know that Shiloh sharps uses it and they colorcase harden using bone meal and charcoal. It says so on there web page and I can testify that it's true because iv been to the factory and seen it with my own eyes. Personally I wouldn't be afraid to do it to mine but I worked for nucor steel for years and understand metallurgy enough to be willing to try stuff. Ultamitly you would have to make the decision.
@@DeathProofProductions Thanks!
@@DeathProofProductionscan a Remington 740 receiver be case hardened? To make the rails harder?
Love the video brother!
Thanks
Great video! What material did you use to clean off the receiver?
do you mean the old bluing or grease
The dark sheet that you secured with magnets before rubbing the receiver on it.
that was just 600 grit sand paper.
Great. Thanks!!
I just inherited my grandfather's Rem 12A, so I'm going to start the project.
Thanks, again! 👍
Show, muito bom meu irmão
Thanks
Would you have drawings or a pic of vice and wrench? My mod 12 is octagon barrel and the bore is shot out and need to be re-barred.
I had to put a liner in this ones barrel to. If you want you can shoot me a e-mail to Davethom2004flstc@gmail.com and I can attach a picture and send it to you.
You really don't have to worry about the oxygen in the container. When it gets to the proper temperature the carbon will react with it and consume it.
Yeah I know, I use the argon just as a precaution I got it so I figure why not.
How did you get the receiver bushings out and new ones in?
Sorry for delayed response been covered up. I machined a special drift pin and pressed them out and in.
I don’t have any metal lathe equipment and live in a rural area. I tried a punch tapping around the circumference but this did not do a thing. Any ideas as to what may work in my situation? Thanks.
I think I still have it if I do I will ship it to you. Go to the channel's home page and e-mail your address and I will get it to you.
@@DeathProofProductions you’ll have to excuse my ignorance but how do I do that? I can’t see anything that allows me to send information without it being seen.
What did you you use remove the barrel ?
I have a barrel wrench that I machined for it.
What about co2 instead of argon, I'm going to attempt this next summer
That works just fine. Just anything to help remove any oxygen.
@@DeathProofProductions also I'm thinking of putting straight bone meal on the bottom of the container not touching the metal then the bone and charcoal mix & possibly some charred peach pits crushed up
Yeah I say try it. that's how you figure it out. send me some pics of how it turns out with that recipe at Davethom2004flstc@gmail.com or the channel email. thanks
