How To Fix The ND? Install New Suspension! - Project MX-5 ND Part 1

- Can we fix Gab's Mazda MX-5 ND? 'Install a stiffer suspension' screamed the internet so we took the trip to our friends at I.L.Motorsport to see if the aftermarket support for the new platform is as great as we are used to expect from previous MX-5 generations.
Follow the almost step by step guide on installing our fresh suspension, and the same brace kit the Max5 Cup race cars use, in our quest to eliminate some of the body roll and add some zoom-zoom. However this is only the start because we intend to go much deeper. How much character can we add while keeping the modifications relatively tame? Join us next Friday, and every Friday for the next couple of weeks, to see more progress!

Love the series guys :D good luck!
Oh mans.... Your videos are getting so professional 😯 love you guys
Thank you very much Andrius! We love you too!
Subscribed. Looking forward to hearing about how the changes feel on the road.
Thank you very much John! Next Friday new episode will be out!
Great video, the ND is easy to change to your preference of handling. Looking forward to more mods.👍
Let's see what the result will be tho! Next Friday, more answers!
I just finished the previous episodes, and was really curious what upgrades are you planning. So here we go😁
These and more coming next friday!
Wow! 2 ND videos in a row!
And there is another two coming in the next two weeks, each Friday! Crazy times eh?
Detailing modding an ND (my car) in several parts? Subscribed. Look forward to seeing the improvements.
The Mx5 journey continues ❤️
Yes!
Really enjoyed it and your approach to transforming your ND . Looking forward to your next episode as well. The 14/8 springs will be great on track but filling failures on the street. I have 10/6 swift spring on my coilovers as a compromise for street and hpde and they're already pretty stiff. I hope you will be upgrading the anti-sway bars. That was the first upgrade I did and that alone transformed the ride. Putting the front one in is a bit tricky unless your getting a two piece one. Get a good alignment which which for me included dropping it down about 1.5 inches and with chassis raked. Mine likes a fair amount of negative camber and minimal to zero toe-in to max straight line speed and all the castor you can get. See you soon?
Hey Michael!
yeah, those spring rates are a bit on the extreme side admittedly but we wanted to turn the car around on its head! I guess you will have to wait until next Friday to see if something good happened? :D
14kg in the front.. very ambitious :) looking forward to the first test drive
Well, weirdly the 8kgs rear are even MORE ambitious apparently
@@GabrielePiana wow, how on earth this should be working? Are actual wheel rates will be THAT different? Or there is big difference in motion ratios?
I just did this Saturday except I kept the bilsteins that come in the Club. Installed springs from Good Win Racing. Huge difference with the springs. I also have that same steering wheel and I gotta say after using it I couldn't imagine going back to the OEM one
Hi Alex!
Those are both 2 good and relatively easy upgrades that will certainly improve the car a ton!
i got the IL MS control arm bushings for my NA.....what difference!!! great company
HI Daniel!
Best company out there for MX5s, hands down!
You doing a good work 👏
Thank you very much Mikael! Stay tuned for more!
Nice one a Gab "How to" video........hope you rechecked all the bolts after a couple days driving !
Well, I did not. But I also did not lose a wheel nor a shock so, all good?
@@GabrielePiana A plus then, Wouldn't hurt to check them at some stage :)
Interesting thing about the stubby antenna is that it is rigid. I learned this the hard way when taking out a box out of the trunk - it's easy to inadvertently hit the antenna and break it off. The original bendy antenna would just ... bend. When the stubby antenna breaks off, it'll break the screw which is screwed into the mount on the car, leaving you with an interesting challenge to get the broken part of the screw out. I can vouch that the simple and cheap extractor bit kits actually work well for this.
Hope we never get to test this feature Goran :D
12:41 my favorite part
Cut the editor some slack! He might be trying to send a message to the world. Is this how his existence looks? How he feels about this channel? His opinion on the ND?
@@serxiocapri Some say this is where the infamous clip was of Kostas cooking, but it got cut out for the viewers safety
Just got to comments to write the same :)
@@serxiocapri you are saying that it just a metaphor for life?

Not yet! ahahah
Amazing!

ahhaha LOL
Consider getting a tune from OV Tune. Difference is like night and day. 👍
I had to Google it as I never heard of it.
BBR does a similar plug-in flash through OBD and the gains, on paper, are significant indeed.
@@GabrielePiana OV is more known in the Miata forums. I personally know the guy who does the tuning. Their tunes are tailor fit to the car rather than an off-the-shelf tune. I can connect you two if you're interested. 🙂
Hey! What about the steering? Is it helpfull regaring depth? I cannot find the installation during the vid. Thanks in advance! Cheers!
I would like to know is there is something doable regarding solving the "depth" issue of the steering. Is there any part which would solve/help solving this lack os depth adjustment? Thanks once again! Cheers and ty for the vids!
They still haven't released those coilovers for sale?
i think i know this place very well x)
I think you do! But you would hardly recognize it now!
@@GabrielePiana it took me Time before recognizing i have to say ! Impressive évolution. Memories were flying in my head. Nice vidéo btw, good to see you with tools in your hands Piana
Why only front drop link?
I'm interested to know what is the opinion of IL motorsports about the stock MX-5?
Great vids!
Well, we cannot really speak for them! You can reach out directly tho, I’m sure they’ll be happy to answer any question you might have.
They have extensive experience at racing them on track so they know them inside out!
@@GabrielePiana Yeah I was wondering in case you went over that topic with them. One thing's for sure, they sure love their miatas.
@@dafthead95 you have no idea how much they do! Their story is crazy, real grassroots and genuine passion! Ingo is one of the coolest guys out there!
How much faster is the ND on coilovers - does Gab already go sub 8 with it ?
Hey Hans! Well, you will have to be patient to see what happens! Next friday and the one after that, expect all the answers!
@@GabrielePiana I expect you to murder multiple GT3 RS on the lap 😁
Take that econelo to the ring !
omg, that would be the most boring thing ever
Nice! Will make a huge difference. Thanks for the tutorial. Working on suspension of 02'Licious now to step up da game. See you guys! (check insta message)
Thanks dude! See you soon! Just saw the DM!
Wow, glad you're not working on MY ND! So many mistakes, don't know where to begin...
Hey Dave!
Ahaha, we are glad not to be working on your ND either! You sound like a blast to be around at dinner anyway!
Came to check if the comment was real
@@hexgraphica of course it does! :D
Oh
oh! :)
I dont like modding but wished the ND had less body roll.
It is really a BIG mistake to tight the screws of the top arm the way you did . Car should sit on the wheels to the ground. The bushings are not in correct position and this affect at least two things. First of all it will destroy the bushings very soon and also if you have measured the height at both sides you might see a big difference. !!! Loosen it again and tight them all with the wheels on and the car on the floor!!!
14/8kg and oem roll bars ??? Not very clever. This car will be useless on normal streets/roads...
Hi Dusan!
We are indeed not very clever, therefore we went berserk! Consider tho, that the goal was to see if extreme changes could make the car more engaging to me, not better on absolute terms. Of course for everyday we would go for a tamer spring rates, this is just to see if changing so drastically actually does something to the car.
Further, the car will be tested on track, so those rates might make sense then.
@@GabrielePiana I was understand from your previous video that you bought your ND especially for daily use...
@@dusanskulavik1878 yes indeed I did! But now since I have it for three years we decided to see if we can make it interesting hence we went all out!
@@GabrielePiana more engaging? Isn't it going to be understeering with setup like that? Maybe not that bad idea if you looking for a grip in the rear, but for 1.5 Miata...
Will love to see your feedback after testing.
