    I met Reg at my Great Aunt's ninety-fifth birthday party at Denville Hall - a delightful man in every aspect. That great Aunt was Doris Hare - she played the Mother character in On The Buses. Happier, simpler days, when people weren't so stuffy or concerned about Political Correctness - a far remove from what is deemed to represent humour today..

    • @errin-mp1zy
      @errin-mp1zy Місяць тому +9

      Did your aunt Doris Hare have a sister, I remember when I was about 8 or 9 going to Bournemouth and we stayed in my uncle Bert's place for 2 weeks, the first week Doris Hare and another lady were there not sure if she was on holiday or staying there while performing in one of the shows, I think a few performers stayed there, she was a very nice lady and the lady she was with was a similar age but she could have been a fellow performer, it was in the 70's.

    • @andrewtongue7084

      Good evening, Errin. That other lady may well have been my Grandmother, Molly; in fact, there were four sisters & one brother: Doris, Molly, Elizabeth (Betty), Winifred (Winnie), & coincidentally, Bertie. All were Thespians, tho' Doris was the most well known; all knew Noel Coward, & many other actors/actresses from the 1920's to present day. My Mother knew many in the acting fraternity, almost by default. Molly lived with us, & Winnie & Betty were spinsters living together, finally settling in Chichester - they were my two eccentric Great Aunts; all long gone, now. I hope that satisfies your curiosity,
      Kindest regards,
      Andrew🙂

      @@andrewtongue7084 Hi Andrew, thank you so much for answering, even though I was only young from memory I had a feeling they were more like sisters, I remember them sitting either side the fireplace in arm chairs chatting to me. At the time I did not know she was famous, but when we got home, she was on the telly and my parents pointed her out to me, whenever I see your great aunt in anything now it takes me straight back to that holiday. Many thanks 🥰

    • @andrewtongue7084
      @andrewtongue7084 Місяць тому +10

      Errin, I think you & I are roughly the same age - I was born in 1964 - again, coincidentally, on 1st March, so I share Doris' birth date too. I suppose, for myself, I've never considered that a member of my family would be deemed well known or "famous" - as a child & into my teens, then adulthood, it was more an understated fact; the word 'celebrity' was not really on anyone's radar back in the day, & hence, not so much fuss was made of it. A better vanished time, methinks....do take care,
      Andrew 🙂

      @@andrewtongue7084 One of the most remarkable thing about Doris, was her voice! She had a DREADFUL voice as "Mum" in OTB, but in real life, her voice was actually quite posh. One of those "bloody hell" moments! lolol.

    • @Aristotelezz
      @Aristotelezz Місяць тому +3

      @@DavoInMelbourne I don't think she was that ugly. It was more her personality, the way she dressed, expressed herself, the way she irritated (unintentionally) Arthur. And it wouldn't have been that funny without Arthur. You wondered why they were married if they irritated each other for the smallest matters.

    On The Buses is as much social commentary as it is comedy. Reg Varney was playing a much younger man and yet he was totally believable (as was Bob Grant as Jack). A true ensemble cast who brought joy to so many. I do wish, however, that the makers of this mini bio wouldn't put up mismatched or completely irrelevant photos along with the commentary.
