Yes, amazing. Ironsword was my favorite. Played it with my cousins every time we went to grandmas house. Yes, my grandma is awesome. She still plays video games every day.
I used to own this game!! I loved playing this as a kid! Dad would take me to a pawn shop on birthdays, and I'd trade my old Nintendo games for new ones. Very weird game, but rewarding and fun once you get into it. The music will be stuck in your head for years. Thanks James and Mike for uploading this.
One of my all-time favorite NES games (and definitely near the very top, if discounting Nintendo-made games). I played it so many times as a kid. The soundtrack is amazing, as well as the gameplay and graphics. A true classic, at least to me.
Played this a ton with my friend back then!! The fun factor was high in this game, and "funky" music! And hated that growing "Bones" boss, what a pain in the ass!!
I owned that game as a kid, never played the original. This one looks like it was easier. I remember the sword being nearly useless in the second one. I would basically run into enemies the entire game to kill them.
3 years and 8 likes later im here to tell you this game was one of my absolute favorites. i bet level 1 would be a lot more fun if you could start with the throwing knife but who cares right, awesome classic!!
I used to play this game with my father when I was a wee Lad. he passed away but whenever I see this game I tear up thinking about the good long hours we put into the game. never fully completing it either but had a bunch of fun trying. thank you for playing this amazing classic!
YES! This was one of my childhood favorites, I like to beat it every now and then! I even learned the title screen music on guitar, I'm totally nerd in out that this popped up haha
In 3rd grade I used to go to my friend's house after school and play this game all the time. Such great memories, I still remember the day we finally beat it. That wizard took us forever!
+GiantBatGaming not even close, really. Dark Souls is an extremely punishing game, but it's never cheap - it gives you everything to beat the game, and then kicks your ass for your own shortcomings, like not being careful, not fighting well, neglecting your equipment, etc. G&G, on the other side, is hard because of poor controls, overpowered enemies and some obstacles that require pure luck to proceed, which is cheap and unbalanced as hell.
bubba200874426 For example? I can't remember any death in Dark Souls that couldn't be avoided by having some skill. You'll probably have to memorize some things (like in any hard game), but enemies are never too overpowered to beat, and levels are never hard because of poor design.

I would really love to see a sequel playing Ironsword. That's the one I remember most growing up. It had a lot of the same gameplay, but was definitely a more challenging game.
This was one of my favorite games when i was kid. Theres totally a sweetspot to that final boss, one corner where you can levitate and just shoot the axe or knife and you dont get a single hit :)
Yeah man, all the sounds in this game are awesome, and very memorable. Brings flashbacks of staying up late at my best friends house in the late 80s. Also a game I continued to revisit through my 20s and 30s. One of the all time greatest from the NES.
This is my fav channel to watch, especialy when yall do james and mike mondays. Im 21, Idk but when i look at mike i think hes like around 27 and james is like the older bro like 30 sumthin but yall are like in yalls 40s. Crazy.

And that’s why they make these vids 😁 I passed it up today at a local game shop because I thought I recalled it being shit and on AVGN. What I didn’t realize was it was this video lol I got Narc and Dr. Mario, though
I remember beating this game back in the day. It still holds true to being my favorite game that I have ever completed! I had to pause my NES and fool my parents by turning the TV off when I went for a hockey tournament for 3 days. NES was still ready to go when I got back and completing Wizards and Warriors was amazing :)!

For an AVGN episode, idk. I think he would be stretching to make jokes, but I'm definitely interested in James + Pokemon anything, really. He hasn't touched on PKMN much.
It never occurred to me that James was that way about games, but it totally makes sense. His love for the monsters and the occult would naturally have him gravitate more toward games like Castlevania and Ghosts and Goblins. But if he really never was interested in "kiddie" games, he shouldn't have enjoyed stuff like Super Mario World--yet he did. Because it's a damn good game. This explains why he rarely mentions such Capcom gems as Rescue Rangers and Little Nemo: The Dream Master. He missed out on some really amazing games.
i could be wrong but i think maike matei is more of a disney fan than james is, though i'm not implying that he's not a disney fan. in fact, i think he likes most of them
Patrick Shields Mike absolutely loves Disney. Not just the classic animation, but he's a MASSIVE fan of Carl Barks, the Disney comic book artist who inspired the cartoon Ducktales, created the character of Scrooge McDuck back in the 40s, and is arguably the greatest Disney comic artist of all time. I think Mike owns almost all of his work in original editions. James may not dislike Disney, but he's definitely more into horror games. Which is a shame, since the NES had a LOT more great cartoony games than it did horror titles.
Patrick Shields I can almost guarantee you they both enjoy most of those films, especially Pixar. Those movies are pretty universally loved, and we're talking about a cartoonist and a film buff here.
What a great game and soundtrack, I used the intro music as my ringtone for years. About the wizards, you forgot (or didn't know about), the two blue ones, Alatar and Pallando. They were only briefly mentioned in some of the books. I guess JRR never got around to writing their stories.
These games never got enough credit. Iron sword is one of the best nintendo games of all time easily and no one ever mentions it. Also one of the hardest.
Wow I am surprised about James's feelings on Gummi Bears. Gummi Bears was a great cartoon IMO and one of my favorites. It was also one of the few Disney cartoons to feature an actual ending episode.
I loved jumping around in this game, I use to have the 'pink' caves memorized too. I can't remember if they were ACTUALLY pink but at the time my old tv make them look pink.
James, the boot is used to kick treasures boxes open without needing the keys, but isn't permanent and can be replaced by certain items until you find it again. If I remember correctly, the staff was the best sub item in the game and completely destroys all the bosses.
I remember playing this game back in the late 80's. You guys must have either gotten into NES late or been clinging on for dear life. Definitely gotta give it another go. Thanks for the video.
Imagine if Anita Sarkeesian had gotten a hold of this game. You collect multiple damsels in distress who who have exactly zero plot relevance, and who award points. You finally rescue "the princess", who doesn't even have a name, and is never even mentioned in the instruction book. She is, however, worth lots of points.
Those boots of force are good to have through the whole game. If you go up to a treasure chest that is closed you can hit select to open it without the key. Also the skulls that shoot things out of their eyes, you can hit select and kill those too.
There was another game I was watching on "Continue?" The character had the same death animation as this character. With the wiggly and everything. Great vid!
It annoys me that they didn't conjugate 'have' correctly for old English. It should be 'thou hast,' not 'thou hath.' 'Hath' is for 3rd person singular.
Not quite. 'Hath' is only used with 'thou,' which was the second person familiar. So, 'thou hast done it,' vs. 'You have done it,' vs. 'He has done it.' Similarly, verbs took the ending 'st' with 'thou.' Such as 'Thou goest.' At least I think I am remembering this correctly!
Okay, the sword animation is awesome, the knight is sorta just flailing it around like a maniac. Then when he dies, he kicks his feet and waves his arms like a taser victim, then after his body goes still, one of his feet keeps twitching. That knight has some seriously intense nervous system responses. It looks awesome. It's like he's acting in a play for a huge audience, and he has to exaggerate all his motions so that the back rows can see.
The final princess, her name hath be Anita Sarkeesian, she complains about this thou game using the "damsel in distress" trope, the noble wizard was just trying to get her to shut up.
Sorry guys but Ian is a walking encyclopedia of retro gaming knowledge and has plenty of enteresting stories to tell, and he knows how to do it. I don't understand why you may dislike him so much. He's a great guy, I'd buy him a sandwich :)
Yeah this was mainly a thing in the 80's and early 90's... the japanese companies didn't think American kids liked games that were too much of a challenge.
That was probably because a lot of games had asshole difficulty. Today, we learned the error of our ways, and know that a good game, is one that acts in a reliable and expected manner, and a scaling difficulty is a good dumbfire way to ensure it's alright.
+tony lenzi Is it a question of game playing ability, or a question of obsessiveness -- a willingness to die over a game, like they sometimes do today in internet cafes?
The next game in this series called Ironsword is one of my all time favorite nes games. It had great music and a great atmosphere. It was all about exploring spooky caves and other locations. Ironsword was probably more about exploration then this game.
Uh Mike, back in the Nes/LJN days, Rare was a garbage developer, and had a long list of garbage games, most of which were hated. (One example was Beetlejuice, made by Rare, published by LJN. Both also did Nightmare On Elm street.) No one gave a shit about this developer until they changed and started making decent games on the Snes and N64, now under the guidance of Nintendo as a publisher. This is when they became famous, and everyone quickly ignored or forgot about the trash they made in the past. Sadly, this would not last either, because after that, they were bought out by Microsoft, and started making shitty games again, now exclusive to Xbox or Kinect. They lost the rights to most franchises they made games for under Nintendo, except Perfect Dark and Banjo, which got crappy newer games on the Xbox. After these games flopped, the franchises were simply abandoned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_developed_by_Rare
The bouts of force are extremely powerful. To beat the wizard, it is best to go on the angled terrain near the teal door and use the potion of levitation to stop his attacks. When the wizard appears closest to you, spam boots of force with your sword and triple ax and you can drop the Wizards health very fast. Of course he can heal.
I loved this game. I beat it when I was like 8 or so when it came out. You can use the boots of force to open locked chests without a key and to knock things over/off the map like beehives and those skulls that shoot projectiles at you. The staff of power is the best secondary weapon, since it does two damage a hit.
Easy way to deal with the wizard at the end. Get to the top of the stage with the feather. Float down while holding right. You will fall through the wall and land on the platform above the door. Now just face left and keep swing your sword and throwing out the projectile. He can only hit you from the platform you're on, and you will keep destroying his fireballs, so you can beat him virtually unscathed.
Underrated series on the whole. And composed by the legendary David Wise.
Yes, amazing. Ironsword was my favorite. Played it with my cousins every time we went to grandmas house. Yes, my grandma is awesome. She still plays video games every day.

G&G Was good, it was just hard as shit. It was like the Dark Souls 1 of the NES age. It's an easy game but it's so cheap it's hard.

I loved this game as a kid. This series deserves a modern reboot by one of today's developers.
It annoys me that they didn't conjugate 'have' correctly for old English. It should be 'thou hast,' not 'thou hath.' 'Hath' is for 3rd person singular.
Thanks for the info
That bothered me, too. They also misspelled Esmeralda.
They aren't in Olde England. They are in the Kingdom of Elrond. Clearly you just don't speak decent Elrondish.
Fuck this game!!
Not quite. 'Hath' is only used with 'thou,' which was the second person familiar. So, 'thou hast done it,' vs. 'You have done it,' vs. 'He has done it.'
Similarly, verbs took the ending 'st' with 'thou.' Such as 'Thou goest.'
At least I think I am remembering this correctly!
It's like he's acting in a play for a huge audience, and he has to exaggerate all his motions so that the back rows can see.
hah, shit, i remember this one... i should play this
What I was thinking. I still have this
Such a classic game. I adore Wizards and Warriors 2, as well.
The final princess, her name hath be Anita Sarkeesian, she complains about this thou game using the "damsel in distress" trope, the noble wizard was just trying to get her to shut up.
loved this game...forgot what it was called, been searching for years. Thanks you James & Mike
pat the nes punk needs to leave ian and just join this
pat lives in San Diego and James and Mike live in new jersey so that wouldn't work..
fuck that guy Ian
ian can be interesting......somedays.......
He has been a guest
Sorry guys but Ian is a walking encyclopedia of retro gaming knowledge and has plenty of enteresting stories to tell, and he knows how to do it. I don't understand why you may dislike him so much. He's a great guy, I'd buy him a sandwich :)
The music from this game and Rygar was stuck in my head for a long time.
nintendo had a guy that tested games to c if us puny americans would b able to handle the games or not
exactly
Funny that a lot of newer Japanese games are more difficult when ported to the US.

Is it a question of game playing ability, or a question of obsessiveness -- a willingness to die over a game, like they sometimes do today in internet cafes?
After these games flopped, the franchises were simply abandoned.

u mental ? rare made some of the best games such as battletoads and captain skyhawk and solar jetman ,all class games
Try looking at the list I provided.
What about RC Pro Am or Battletoads? Those are good!
published by LJN says it all
To jump on the bubbles in Bubble Bobble, all you have to do is hold the jump button down. No timing required.
Have James play Undertale
