5 out of 6 beers James?! … You’re an animal.
The music composer for Rygar and Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde was the same guy. His name was Michiharu Hasuya.
Interesting info thanks
I would imagine both games use the same audio engine that Michiharu made himself.
Bandai is North American publisher.
Toho is Japanese publisher.
You are welcome :P
so whos the developer? who actually made the damn thing??
TECMO are the devs.
That glitch was amazing.
It was!
Thank you mario but your princess is in another castle :P
But Proto! What if it was meant to be there 🤔
ProtoMario lol
I've always loved the NES version of Rygar. One of my top 10 fav adventure games for the console. Great music/gameplay/atmosphere. Once you figure out the RPG elements of the game it makes the game A LOT easier.
Secret Warp to Lapis! Nice!
Damn James, FIVE beers?.. easy now! :D
I'm surprised I haven't seen a comment about how great that "Rolling Rock Origin" story was that James and Mike told about back in college. It was told so well, It was like a good book. I was completely visualising everything he was saying. Definitely one of my favorite videos from you guys in a long time!
Damn, I remember and love this game growing up playing it with my older brothers, this is nostalgic for me too
The same here, absolutely!
LOL You look like a viking, or a really tall dwarf ;D - but hey, looks can deceive and don't matter in the end, I get the feeling you're still a nice guy ;) One Up for nostalgia, man!
I liked the reminiscing of college and the NES and the Rolling Rock and Rygar story. That glitch was way better then I thought it would be. Epic!
Game was like "I'm bored ... I know! You play here now!" **GLITCH**
Love you guys, thanks for making my day better! Monday wouldn't be the same without you!
Simon's Quest, Rygar, Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus were my favourite NES games. From memory the booklet for Rygar told you alot about what you needed to do in the game.
Just bought this game then, I found this. Didn't realize same music was used. About an hour in and further than I got when I was a kid. This game came out when I was 6 or 7.
Great game. I feel like playing it again.
Wish I still had my copy of it. Ebay here I come!
Anonymous witchcraft?
how do you have 50 k subs with no videos?
So many memories from this game. btw Elvis himself said that Andy Kaufman was his best impersonator.
I love how the cover has to state Rygar is a legendary warrior, like he doesnt have to prove himself. Personally, I became a believer when I saw Rygar restore his health with a jug of wine.
Michiharu Hasuya did the music for both Rygar and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, which is why both games use a nearly identical music track.
So glad that you guys reviewed this game . One of the few nes games I ever completed . You should review Rygar for the Wii sometime in the near future .
Damn this game brings back memories. One of my favs I still play till today
I remember one thing that worked was going to the top-down view place and grinding out levels until you have max level. Made fights a lot easier.
Son of a glitch...
"They have bugs blockin' all the exits, look at that..."
"Yeah, bugs!!"
This is one of those games that stick out in my mind from back in the good old days m.
Rygar my all time favorite arcade game
Alot of people dislike the arcade game because it's nothing like the NES but I still think it's good. Unlike Ninja Gaiden, arcade version of it not so good.
I love your faces when you found that glitch at the end.
This game has my vote for most underrated game. This was also a I game I rented multiple times but never owned. I see a lot of people had the same habit of renting it a lot. Its an awesome game with great music and gameplay. Hits me in the feels.
I have been looking for this game for years! Rented it from the video store and have never been able to remember what it was. Cant wait for pt2
Elvis falsely accusing someone of trying to kill him with the gun he just put in their hands is hilarious.
Dude the Rollin Rock and Rygar in a paper bag story is fu@%in hilarious!!!
Rygar was one of my favorite NES games. One of the most frustrating too, because it was one of those "play it all in one sitting" games. The remake/revision on PS2 was pretty good from what I can remember, as well.
HOLY SHIT RYGAR!! Played this game to no end with my cousins every weekend!!
Cygnus Destroyer brought out the music comparison when he reviewed Jekyll and Hyde. The music composer for Rygar did Jekyll and Hyde as well.
I too used to rent this from the rental store. Very nostalgic for me too.
I started playing this a few days ago, and I also discovered the same glitch at 18:10. During that boss fight I walked all the way to the right and fell into it.
There were many NES games that you had to beat in one sitting, like SMB 1 ,2, and 3 for example. Pretty much any NES and SNES game without saving or passwords is/was like that.
I only have vague memories of this game; I know I beat it but don't really remember how... Thanks for playing it; it's giving me all sorts of awesome deja vu...
This is the game I was hoping to see you guys play one day. I would play it for hours as a kid and never beat it, but beating the game has become a yearly ritual for me that takes a little over an hour. The fight with Eruga is basically a pissing contest. I always did it by going to the level with the solid blue background just before Gran Lapis and killing those flying yellow things that drop white bowling balls until I have about 6 or 7 bars of life then going in with all of them full and hammering away on the attack button until only one of us is still standing.
Yeah, this was definitely a game that I never owned for my NES, but I still managed to beat it about 10 times. Between rentals and friends' copies, it became a beloved memory. Up there with the likes of Contra and Super Mario and Jackal and Wrecking Crew in personal NES paradise.
It's not a shield. It's got a name, it's a disk armour.
Don't ask what that means. I've got no clue.
James has as amazing memory I don't remember even what color I pooped yesterday
Always consistently good episode all the damn time!!! It's like anything Cinemassacre is always a for sure thing I can count on.
Good game and great music. I just re-bought this game a couple of weeks ago. Always had a great time, one of my favorites.
The last boss in this is like the hardest thing in the history of gaming
5 bottles of beer is drinking excessively? Oh, James...
Unlike you, hes not a depressed alcoholic.
As a kid I always felt like the Game Over tune was the game literally laughing at me.
the japanese game NioH on PS4 and PC has a small reference to Rygar on it. In the form of a revenant named "REBOOT_RYGAR", whose spirit, upon defeat, tells the protagonist "thank you, i did not want to come back in this form".
notimportantbutinteresting
My friend had this game. He would tell me he could get near the end, but some chimera-looking boss made him cry and his grandma would turn the game off.
I always liked Rygar, the graphical style and gameplay always reminded me a lot of Ninja Gaiden, to me this a more fantasy filled Ninja Gaiden when growing up, the box art definitely had something to do with that.
I used to play the arcade version of this at Pizza Inn when I was a kid.
Toho was Publisher in Japan
One of my favorites when I was a kid.
5 beers is excessive? Damn dude, you're a lightweight lol.
Played this game through a couple years ago. Classic. I have a disk for my Dreamcast that has the entire library for the Sega Mastersystem (what my buddy told me when he gave it to me). It has a different version of Rygar. I'll have to play it again and compare to another video I'm watching that compares all the different versions of this game.
Led Zeppelin!!!
One of my favorite childhood games.
I want a James & Ryan episode, just for the heck of it.
... 5 beers in college isn't excessive, you dorks. Like, maybe 15
jacobtheboy 25.
Depends on the beer and the amount you're used to. Over drinking is nothing to be proud of after all. If James considered it a lot for him, then it was.
Replace 5 beers, with 5 grams of coke and then replace Rygar with Mario Party 4. So we all had different experiences, but yet similar somehow if you get my drift, lol. Oh man, college around 1999-2005 was the last bit before the students became like fragile little snowflakes.
Geez, Maurice. Way to ruin the mood. I bet you're a blast at parties.
Yeah I was like what only 5? Maybe if you have a test the next day lol
Awesome, a fun game that is also a big part of my childhood. Can't wait for part 2
The Dewey cox story has a good Elvis impression
I love this game. This game have some great music tracks too. There is a lot of glitches in this game. Tips: serach around with the grappling hook. See if you can reach other odd spaces with that hook. Its poosible to reach odd locations in places where you see Rygar from above as well. Search and you will find :-)
This game's glitchy as shit.
I loved this game as a kid.
Thanks for the gritty Rolling Rock origin story!
I loved this game. It was one of the ones that I'd beg my parents to rent when I was little.
If I remember correctly, Toho was the publisher for the game in Japan.
this is a game I used to love as a kid and never could remember the name of it later on. Now I know thanks to that dr.jekyll and mr.hyde revisited avgn episode.
I actually reaallyy enjoy the Rygar released again by Tecmo on the PS2. Overlooked game and imo a hidden gem.
Hey James and Mike. Rygar's weapon is called a Diskarmer.
You guys probably already looked it up, but I wanted to say anyway.
Mike: yes a lot of games shared sound effects, but tell us some that share music.
"Uh rub robot" love genuine reactions dont get many of those on youtube.......great vid cant wait forr next pt!
It's the same composer, Rygar and Jekyl and Hyde, so I suppose he just double-dipped. I do think there is also a connection between Tecmo, Toho, and Bandai.
Mind blown realizing The rygar Theme song playing during the levels is the Spanish alphabet song. *.*
LOVE THIS GAME! played it as a kid, beat it as an adult. great time!
I'm stupid jealous that you have the box. Love this game!
his weapon is called a Diskarmor its a spiked shield with a chain on it. its basically a MODIFIED Flail
I only remember playing the arcade version and it being brutal but awesome (may have been because I was a little kid). This NES version is a lot different.
whoa dude! 5 WHOLE bottles of Rolling Rock?
Rygar might be the most under rated NES game. Really a unique game that is fun and a AWESOME soundtrack.
After doing some research, I found out that Rygar came out before Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. So I guess James is right: they did use the music from Rygar. XD
18:11 major glitch, the character was like imma head out, done fighting this boss.
Mike's Elvis is great. He should study improv at Second City or somewhere like that; if he hasn't already. Good stuff.
"Rygar and Rolling Rock." When destiny calls, it rarely sounds like fate. Even in the rain . . .
I also loved Rygar. I dont even know why, but it had some good variety and action. I spent so many hours on it but dont remember the ending.
waltermh111 You probably don't remember it because it's one of the laziest ones on the NES. The last boss is also a complete joke.
I remember spam killing the robot in Lapis so I could one hit kill everything. Boss fights were a lot easier. Great game!
I didn't know that this existed. I only ever played the arcade version years ago.
Rolling Rock & Rygar lol the bromance is real
Yes Wizards and Warriors has that life-bar thing. Can't wait to see the part two of this. Glitches, don't you love'em? =D
Okay, that glitch caught me off-guard in a big way.
The weapon the hero uses looks a lot like that of a type of knight found in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow (and others)...it's like a yo yo with spikes...
If you get stuck on boss one, go back trough the door and power up and collect health to have full health. Youll also get lvl up exp and have more hearts.
Rygar and Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde shared the same composer who reused work done.
That story with the rolling rock and Rygar, you should totally make an AVGN out of it. You could call it: The rise of the nerd" ;)
What you guys should do/look into is playing both versions of the games you play and talk about them or say which you like better. Like Rygar for instance is also an arcade game. Or maybe look at other ports or sequels too. Maybe not in the same vid, but you get what I'm saying lol.
I'm going to come off strait fanboy here...I have watched just about everytging you guys have done. I appreciate all of it, but I like the buddy moments James and Mike have on Mondays. I would like to recommend a great homebrew, Mario Adventure. I know you guys don't do that remash BULLSHIT...but I really think it's everything Super Mario 3 could have been, and it's BRUTAL. Good luck ;)
When the game gliched out the CPU defaults to the next available instruction which in that games case is the next level !
The easiest way to level up. Is to get to the area where the robots are. They are worth a lot of experience.
I went from atari games to this.
My mind was blown.
the biggest issue with me is that was a place where u need to jump on the top down view area and change direction in mid-air to get on with the game.....too me a lot to find it out....and this happened during screen transition...very strange...
Man, I remember the arcade version of this. The NES version actually looks decent.
I loved this game too.. A true classic
