I always use fresh Macs. It's the only way to go if they're biting Macs in the area I fish.. the past couple years I've been having good luck with squids near the railroad bridges.. at night under the lights. At high tide. And if they're not hitting squids then I normally throw on an 8in green and white or silver yo-zuri shallow diver. Some of the biggest stripers I've ever caught we're on those. At the Gloucester drawbridge the Manchester drawbridge and the saugus drawbridge
Thank you for this Ryan! I always wondered who they react to chunk bait. If you filmed my bait, you would see 50 crabs walk off with my bait every cast lol awesome footage. I've learned so much from your videos. Especially about Albie's!!!
That is great to hear! I'm really happy you are learning new things from the videos. Hearing that will help keep me inspired to film more! Tight lines 🎣
Well, this clarifies an issue... I've experienced this situation when fishing in the river with fresh and frozen cut bait. When the fish are finicky, there is a noticeable difference.
Lot of looks but few takes. I'd like a side by side comparison with one having a bit of action like a flashy spoon, wiggly plastic tail or feather skirt. A dropper loop might have a little current action. Soaking it in attractant or maybe even hot sauce might help.
@@MyFishingCapeCod my biggest is 26 inch and it was 4 pounds exactly. I just fish a local river that the stripers come in from the bay. Alot of people use different lures like ratl traps and white colored swimbaits because the river water is very muddy and dark.
My Fishing Cape Cod , a 20lb striped bass is a trophy here in Cali . 10 lb stripers are bragging rights . 30 to 50 lb stripers were pretty common until about the 1980’s . The population took a steady nosedive and is still dropping . They know the problem but refuse to fix it .
2 OL’ Vets , there has been many efforts by fisherman , anglers organizations , and many other groups to fix the problems . Nothing is done . Thanks a lot, i'll definitely remember this for next season. I have tried frozen mackerel before and had zero luck. Now I know why! What would you recommend for getting fresh mackerel? Do you catch them yourself? Or do you get them right when they arrive at the tackle shop?
I catch them myself, or I ask my friends to keep some for me when they go out fishing. I've definitely had my best luck when I use the mackerel the same day I catch them. LMK how it goes for you during 2021. Good luck! 🎣
Sabiki rig. Tho I can attest to fresher is better but I’ve had stripers to not take fresh chunks too but it’s less common compared to weeks old frozen. I agree stripers are finicky eaters.
I use frozen anchovy chunks on the California Delta. Even when the Stripers are running I’m only getting nibbles and hook-ups from immature fish and the occasional Catfish. I’ll try fresh bait.
Good luck! I hope you find some bigger fish. You might also want to consider branching out into different areas and new spots. It's possible you're just fishing in a "small fish spot". Here on Cape Cod there are certain spots where I only catch small fish, and other spots where I catch mostly large fish.
Was the bait still frozen while on the hook? It looked like it. We have used frozen mackeral thawed out with success. Id much rather fresh bait but sometimes you have no choice.
Caught my pb just a few hours ago on 3 week old frozen, and completely thawed out mackerel. Didn’t have time to get fresh stuff,I guess today was the exception.
I mean you are using the back end for most of the shots and Ive had little success with tails. It does make a difference if its still actually frozen. I think they feel it colder than their surroundings and throw it. But if they are thawed they tend to commit more. I severely outfished my friend sitting right next to me who was using live eels and clams proven more than once. I stand by cut mackerel frozen or fresh any time.
I was in PTown for a week back in June and crushed them on seaworms and frozen squid too. All from shore on a sandy bottom. Couldn’t cast a bait out without catching a fish.
When you say "frozen bait" do you mean bait that hasn't thawed out yet? Because I've had great success with bunker that have been frozen, then thawed out.
That's a good question Art. This bait had been frozen, and then gradually thawed over the course of the fishing trip. It was still cold, but definitely thawed out a bit when I was fishing it.
@@MyFishingCapeCod I sometimes used to take thawed-out bunker and put them through one of those old-fashioned meat grinders to create a chum. The chum ended up being ground up so fine that it put the oils and the scent in the water that would work the fish up into the mood to feed and then the only chunks of bait that were available to eat were our baits. A lot of the time, frozen bunker was all we could get our hands on. Another great trick was whenever seeing a school of bluefish feeding on bunker, snag a few and cut them in half, fish the bottom with them. Stripers can be lazy and just sit under a school of blues and pick up their scraps because bluefish are so voracious, they eat until they're full and then just continue chopping up the bait and letting it drop to the bottom.
If it's frozen, then it's not fresh. I like to catch the bait myself when possible, and use it the day I catch it. And I've only tried artificial scents on lures, and I can't say for sure if it's helped or not. LMK if I can answer anything else. Tight lines!
@@MyFishingCapeCod So your saying anything at a bait shop is or was frozen.? If I can get out to(don’t own a boat any more but, kayak or from shore ) I would net or weighted treble hook some bunker fo chunking or live lining.
Dude that is answering my question right here. Now you can help saving some money because guys would go to buy frozen bait that exist for years. In addition, does using a cripple herring work at night time?
Frozen bait can work well, especially if it was freshly frozen. But you are correct, older frozen bait can lose its effectiveness! With regards to the crippled herring, I have never used that lure at night, so I wouldn't really know, but my gut instinct is that the crippled herring will work better during the day. That lure does a nice job of catching the sunlight, which is one of the reasons why I think it works so well during the day.
Best bait is always live bait such as bunker. Second best bait is freshly caught bunker still alive that you then cut into chunks. Use the head with some of the bloody guts coming from the back and you will catch bass faster than you can blink your arss.
Always said they smell that frrezer on it .... Caught all mine on fresh squid last season .... They were even picky about that ..... Some batches were stinkn n they were hitting it unconscious
With fresh bait your releasing the rich oils of the Mackerel. Cut slits down the length of bait before cutting into chunks. Also replace your bait every 20 minutes or so to keep it fresh. Previous frozen bait the oils are ruined and useless.
Great video. Pretty close to what I use normally. I was using a whole mackerel this one day when I was after a 40 plus inch striper but I hooked a great white shark instead while fishing fom my kayak. Part of my video was used on the Discovery Channel episode called The Great White North. Toss me a subscription if you like, I only need a couple more to get 1000 :) Cheers
I've caught big schoolies on big chicken liver bait in fresh water during their migration period. Also caught a 40 inch 28lber on bunker chuck cut bait.
I’ve caught plenty on frozen bait too. I feel it also depends a lot on the specific spot you are fishing. For example, this was filmed in a shallow calm spot where the bass are normally very fussy. On the other hand, there are some other spots nearby that have a lot of current and swift moving water, where the bass are a lot less picky.
Would have loved to see a side by side comparison using fresh bait on the same fish at the same time.
Maybe I can make that happen during 2021 👍
Yeah right
Side by side cut bait and a good gob of blood worms!
