And a brilliant driving instructor gave me about eight lessons before the test. And honestly? Touch wood, I think I’m a decent driver, but I’ve picked up so many bad habits over the years, I’d say I’d have zero chance of passing now unless I did some sort of refresher course.

    The reasoning I've heard for Reverse around the corner, is that it's meant to simulate reversing into a parking bay, except you're not potentially putting other cars that may be parked at risk. Great content though, love your attitude!

    • @dorothrrystyles9403
      @dorothrrystyles9403 15 днів тому +5

      They would just take you to a car park and direct you to an empty area for the reverse bay park. Reverse round a corner is taught so that if you have gone the wrong way and the road is too narrow to do a 3-point turn, you will know another safe method of turning your car around

    • @Pingstery
      @Pingstery 15 днів тому +3

      @dorothrrystyles9403 Ireland doesn't do parking maneuvers, just hill start, turnabout and reverse around the corner. So it's as close as it gets anyway.

      @dorothrrystyles9403 15 днів тому +3

      @@Pingstery yes true,, and while it’s def a good way to somewhat simulate reverse bay park, it’s not the actual reasoning for it being on the test. It’s just to learn another way to turn the car around. That’s why I responded haha

    • @Pingstery
      @Pingstery 15 днів тому

      @@dorothrrystyles9403 fair enough! It's still a weird maneuver, as no one I've brought it up with has ever had to do it in real applications, that's why this seemed like the most logical explanation!

    • @kevmur1000
      @kevmur1000 14 днів тому +4

      Additionally, on country roads it can happen that you need to reverse out of a narrow lane way to let someone out who's coming in the opposite direction. That's not going to happen in Dublin of course but the test should cover your ability to drive anywhere in the country.

    I'm in the north, in Belfast, our test is like a hybrid between the 2. It's like the UK grading system 16 minors and a serious/dangerous being a fail. But the test is more like the Irish. I actually disagree with the reverse around the corner criticism, despite, like everyone, having had a nervous breakdown about it when I was learning. It is a manouver I use regularly. Reversing into a parking space in a carpark, reversing into a driveway to make a turn on a narrow road. Remember that if your house has a driveway, you are supposed to only ever drive forward out onto the road, therefore (unless you live in a mansion) you're probably going to be reversing in. All the skills you have to learn about observation and control for the reversing around a corner are very useful and important. If you take being a good driver seriously. Which I guess all the people who nose in to parking spaces and reverse out of their driveways don't.....🙄

    Good video. I passed my test in Ireland earlier this year on the second attempt. Failed the first time for coasting when cornering. Sounds like I would have passed if I'd been doing it in the uk. One difference between the video and a real test is that during the actual test there would be no chatting and the tester would not inform you of mistakes as you go along. But I understand that you formatted the video that way because it had to be watchable.

  • @KiwiJJams
    @KiwiJJams День тому

    I passed my test on the third try. One of the best things I learned before my 3rd try was that the tester isn't trying to find reasons to fail you and when you make a mistake (like slightly off position in a turn) the tester will try to give you a second chance to do the same manoueuver correctly to show that you do know how to do it. Sometimes you just stress a bit and over correct on a turn on the first try, but if you consistently repeat the same mistake 3 turns in a row, there is a problem with your driving and you need to practice and try again another day.
    One tip I heard (I dont know if this applies to all test centres but it did in mine), if you end up back in the test centre in about 20 minutes, there's a good chance you've passed because the fewer mistakes you make, the fewer manouevers the examiner will make you repeat (e.g. the off position turn example I mentioned earlier. If you clear all your turns flawlessly then the driver won't seek out an extra turn to see if you make that mistake a second or third time). If your test takes closer to 30 minutes then you've probably failed because the examiner has taken more time to give you a second chance to do a manouever. If its a grade 2 error and you make the mistake once, you can still pass, but if you repeat that mistake 3 times in a row, you're in trouble. Also, the longer you're driving, the more time for you to acrue mistakes. If the examiner finds no faults within the first 15 minutes, they're pretty confident in your driving and will just bring you back to the test centre rather than waste more time when you're unlikely to rack up tonnes of mistakes in the next 5 mins after clearing 15 minutes without faults.
    On my third test, I was back in the test centre within 24 minutes and I was pretty confident I'd passed because the test had gone quickly. I was getting tested in a town that gets pretty congested so the extra four or so minutes could be down to sitting at lights or busy junctions and I knew I'd driven well enough for the 20 minutes that the examiner didn't need to allow extra time for me to correct mistakes. I was a little nervous til he said "congratulations" because the 24/25 minute mark could have been a narrow pass or a narrow fail.

      Doesn't make any difference anymore as a large number of drivers have never passed an Irish driving test. There are drivers from all over the world with little or no driving skills and they are driving on whatever licence they can get their hands on. Recently came across an Asian driver driving on a Romanian license, it's a free for all out there. I got a C1 licence about 20 years ago and the test was over 1 and a half hours long but what we were taught was defensive driving, I have carried that over to driving my car and it kinda works like the way you think when riding a bike, and that's everyone out on the road is out to kill you so 100% concentration and anticipation of others on the road making the most stupid manoeuvres and mistakes, it's kept me out of trouble and I have avoided many accidents by using a kind of spider sense, if you think someone is about to do something stupid, well hang back and then when they f up you're well clear of aftermath.

    14:18 That type of 3-point turn is highly situational though, I have done that exact manouver many, many times since it's one of the most convenient ways to turn around where I currently live. Either that or I have to go half a kilometer up the road (either of the roads to be clear) to be able to do another turnaround instead so I wouldn't call it a useless manouver to practice.

    At 1:18 and 21:59, there is no Stop sign accompanying the road markings. I'm not familiar with the Rules of the Road in the Republic of Ireland, but in the UK (both Great Britain and Northern Ireland), I think Stop road markings without an accompanying Stop sign are *not* legally enforceable. You'd probably still fail a driving test, though (I'll leave it to Francis to answer that one).
    Also, I believe that the driving test in the Republic of Ireland still requires you to know your hand signals to indicate your direction or braking. How many drivers have _ever_ needed to use hand signals? Ross should have tested Francis on those; that would have been interesting to watch! 😄

    I passed my test years ago. When I was reversing around the corner I had traffice coming from everywhere so had to keep stopping, got round the corner and stopped, the tester looked around for traffic coming, then looked at me and said "I didn't say stop", I said, well I can keep going but I'll just crash into the car that parked behind me a few minutes ago...🤣🤣🤣
    I kept an eye on the testers sheet as we went round (back when it was a paper test sheet), got back to the test center and parked across two spaces. Walked in to the test center and the tester said the only thing is your car is straddling two parking spaces. I said, yeah, but sure I saw the sheet when we pulled in and I knew I'd passed so I did that to give you something to fault me on for the statistics...🤣🤣🤣

    If only Ross was a driving tester, there would be fewer licensed drivers on Irish roads. Since the 2020/2021 lockdowns driving standards have deteriorated in Ireland. And it doesn’t help with some road users flipping between being pedestrians and back… and the number of motorists running red lights is shocking.
