He always comes across as such a great guy in interviews, and still completely immersed in making music for the most genuine of reasons. I also agree with what he says about the limitations of hardware encouraging a more imaginative way of working. I tried software based DAWs, but found I was spending hours fiddling with settings rather than making music. So I went back to writing stuff on a bass guitar, ancient drum machine and a single analogue synth.

Interesting that Stephen talks about the infinite possibilities ... I think there’s something to be said for having limited possibilities ... in terms of equipment etc ... that this focuses in some way the creative process ...

Never heard anyone say it that way, that you "could go on forever in a DAW", but its too true. Learn when to hang it up and release it!

Actually, it's always a bad excuse when people don't understand the new ways. What they're really saying is; I never could learn how to do it that way. A listen to New Order's new material shows that they are actually not sounding very well produced these days, even with the great gear. Not hating, I love this guy, and the band. But lazy analogue fetishism is simply passe nowadays. ITB is only limited by your talent, your imagination and your experience, and will to experiment and get it right. Just like it should be. That's because it's an advancement. You have to put the time in, however. Go and have a watch of Thomas Dolby's talk at Rough Trade. He has the correct artistic and professional attitude; "no I don't own any old synths - why would I?"
