Had heard Blue Monday a number of times live before it was released - still didn’t prepare me for the first time I heard it on the radio in 1983. Sounded like nothing I had ever heard before. Like aliens had taken over the airwaves.
It was always the drummer, I watched him when the were current drive through huge sets digitally on point. Changed the range of beats coming out of the disco and into techno.. love to New Order!

About 13 years ago, I remember watching a documentary where Bernard said he/they programmed a sequencer/sampler for the bulk of Blue Monday. And then there was either a power cut or something, so they lost all the music and had to start again from scratch. Now I can't find anything about that. Agree along with frankie goes to hollywood’s relax, the only song’s in the uk top forty to go down the charts & back up again to the top 10 in 1983 & 1984 respectively 💯
If anyone wants to get a feel for the Joy Division/New Order days of the late 70s and early 80s Manchester watch the superb film Control. It’s heartbreaking re Ian but it captures the mood…
directed by dutchman Anton Corbijn who also directed video for atmosphere, he was a big JD fan and also a NO order fan, great film, black and white, Sam Riley from Leeds and Samantha Morton. Sam actually went on to marry Alexandra Maria Lara who plays Annik in the film
This is awesome. I thought they'd at least mention 'Our Love' by Donna Summer since they've confessed before how much it inspired them....everyone go listen to that and wait for it!

@Numanoid84 I can tell that you like Gary Numan by your picture. Blue Monday was one of the accepted tracks but I don't like everything with New Order. They came much later when I started to embrace guitars. I was also part of the early rave scene and to me it came like a blessing.

It did happen. Peter Hook writes about it in his book "Substance".
Donna Summer’s “Our Love”, is another influence.
And uranium by kraftwerk is another one and also I agree with the other one too
and the bass line was another rip off 😂❤

Best electronic song ever!
Yes...and it's the 1983 original that is the best...NO OTHER VERSION can touch it.

Why would anyone dislike this?!
I can’t imagine this in the New York clubs must’ve been a great time to be alive
Yes indeed how wonderful moment when you heard a record in a disco that would become an absolute classic
The Instrumental version was called "The Beach"
Great video. Good work Dig! people
The video clips are from Blue Monday 88 though. The original Blue Monday video was like the 586 video just a bunch of stripes and graphics IIRC
"low budget equipment" WHAT!? All their synthesizers were very high end! The DMX adjusted for inflation was over ten grand! Budget my arse!
They talk about synth bass, played if I'm not wrong by the Moog Source. There was higher end equipment back then than that.
It ain’t no Jupiter 8 I guess
Bernards home made sequencer 👍 Cubase , cakewalk etc made it possible for the rest
Fantastic video!
Thank you Kraftwerk, Ian Curtis, and everybody else.
The length of this video isn’t lost on me.
Retro and futuristic at the same time.
It was the biggest selling 12" because it was only ever available on 12"
Love it!!!

The B side of Blue Monday (The Beach) it's basically an instrumental mix of Blue Monday
