    "You live a new life for every new language you speak. We have only one chance of living on this Earth but if we never stop learning new languages we can live more than just one life." - You made me cry with this quote. Thanks for this more-than-inspiring video. I think it's time for me to learn Chinese again and then other languages that I'm fond of. Thank you!

    My first foreign language i was forced to learn german. I am comfortable in speaking german, and can understand when someone speaks fast. After that i started learning Spanish, 3 months later i can have not so fluent but long conversations with spanish speakers. after 6 months or more i will hop on to portuguese while still learning spanish. I cannot express how joyful it is to learn new language.
    How i learn spanish is simple. I am busy person, so i walk to work everyday and listen to audio course on spanish. This way i get my both physical and mental workout

    So happy I was recommended this video! I'm a native English speaker and have been a language enthusiast since I was a kid. I currently speak Japanese (B2, but used to be C1 many a year ago), Spanish (B2), Swedish (B1), a bit of Georgian, and have dipped my toes in many others ( As of now I've dabbled and learned some basics of Bulgarian, Zulu, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, German, Hindi... I'm sure I'm forgetting a few). It's been such an obsession of mine and it fills me with so much joy. I can't seem to stop getting excited about picking up more languages and having my mind opened to whole new worlds and ways of understanding and looking at the world. I'm also fascinated with dead, indigenous, and endangered languages. I'd love to study Old English/Anglo Saxon seriously one day as it's appealed to me for many years. I also find conlangs extremely interesting as well, and have been working on one of my own! Oh if we only had infinite time to pursue everything we loved...
    I'm curious, are there any languages that you just don't really like that much? Ones that you have no interest in learning (as of now) or ones that you simply don't like the sound of? Also, have you ever studied Georgian? It's hard to find polyglots who tackle this beautiful language. I used to live in Georgia and fell in love with the country, culture, and language and hope to become much more proficient in the future.
    Sorry for my rambling comment, but I got a bit excited. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! ❤

    Learning a language is a path without ending because it is indeed a new life and a new way of seeing life through that language, through that culture. In brief, you get new eyes to see the same world. I agree with all the thoughts you share in the video, and of course there are still more things to say about the topic; things that also have to do with learning processes that improve every day you are learning new things. Every time I get into the classroom, a new professor is sharing new discovering with students. So, this way I also try to see my new group of students because they are also new plants with sparkling new flowers and leaves. Life is poetry, and languages are the dancing music around every poem that you share. A warm hug for those who are pursuing this path. My native language is Spanish, by the way.

      I have 50+ languages on my list of languages I want to learn and improve, and am currently learning 15+ languages, including the prettiest languages Icelandic + Norse / Dutch / Norwegian that are as pretty as English, so I highly recommend learning these magical languages as they’re just too pretty not to know! Luckily I learned Spanish in childhood in a 100% passive way, and this may be one of the reasons why I find language learning super easy, tho it’s also the fact that knowing both English and Spanish is a huge advantage as well as the fact that I always choose the pretty languages with mostly or almost only pretty words which are naturally motivating and bring true joy to the eye and ear! I started learning languages on my own about one year ago, and I got to an advanced level in Dutch after only focusing on it for about 3 or 4 months, as Modern Dutch is the language that’s closest to Modern English, and it is the easiest language ever, after English that’s is the easiest language in every way, and the Nordic languages and the Norse languages are also super easy to learn, as all Germanic languages are category 1 + category 2 languages with almost only pretty words that are naturally very memorable and the most organized aspect, and almost all the languages on my list are category 1 languages and category 2 languages, except for Irish & Scottish Gaelic which are category 3 languages, so my learning process is very enjoyable! It’s all going real smoothly, as I am using the best learning techniques, such as spaced repetition (watching many vocab videos with hundreds and thousands of words as well as all sorts of videos on grammar and prepositions / verbs / conjunctions and pronunciation etc, multiple times, times over a period of time, until I can instantly process and remember / use automatically every word) and memorizing many lyrics and watching all videos with subs in the target languages etc! I highly recommend learning the prettiest languages ever created Dutch and Icelandic + Norse and Norwegian, which are as pretty / refined / poetic as English, and also Welsh / Breton etc and Galician and Hungarian and Slovene etc, and any other Germanic language and modern Celtic language, as they are all gorgeous!

    • @FrozenMermaid666
      @FrozenMermaid666 5 місяців тому

      By the way, my current levels are...
      - intermediate level in Old Norse / Icelandic / Welsh
      - writer level in English + native speaker level in Spanish
      - upper advanced level in Dutch + advanced level in Norwegian
      - mid intermediate level in German / Swedish / Portuguese / French / Italian
      - beginner level in Breton / Hungarian / Gothic / Latin / Faroese / Galician / Danish / Slovene
      - total beginner in Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic / Aranese / Elfdalian / Gallo / Limburgish / Occitan / Luxembourgish / Catalan / East Norse / Ripuarian / Swiss German / Alemanic / Austrian German / PlatDeitsch / Greenlandic Norse / Friulian / Pretarolo / Sardinian / Neapolitan / Sicilian / Venetian / Esperanto / Walloon / Ladin / Guernsey / Norn / Burgundian / West Frisian / North Frisian / East Frisian / Finnish / Latvian / Estonian etc (and the other languages based on Dutch / German / Norwegian / Italian / French that are referred to as ‘dialects’ but are usually a different language with different spelling etc)
      (My list isn’t complete tho, as I don’t know the names of some of the extra languages that are based on the standard language yet, but I want to learn all the Germanic languages and the 6 modern Celtic languages and the true Latin languages and a few others, including all the extra languages that are based on the standard language that are usually referred to as dialects, as Norwegian / Italian / Dutch / German / Danish have tons of those extra languages, and I want to learn at least the differently spellt words and the words used with different meanings in each extra language, so that I can at least understand them, but I want to learn each official language / standard language to a native speaker level, and some of them to a writer level!)

    • @FrozenMermaid666
      @FrozenMermaid666 5 місяців тому

      Old Norse is one of the prettiest languages I’ve ever seen, it has real gorgeous words like erfiði / yfir / haf / vindr / dyn / skegg / dróttinn / veit / drengr / fjall / hǫnd / fisksins / lengr / hvassir / rauðr / hvarr / grænn / hvat / líkligr / hǫss / afi / frændi / heitir / veð / hráka / þó / kvern / mælti / hét / setja / hinn / kveða / sinn / leið / brott / knerri / við / dýr / með / heyra / eða etc, and the word endings (like nir and inn and sins etc) and the letter combinations are so pretty, just like the word endings and letter combinations in English and Dutch and Norwegian, and Icelandic is very similar, and Faroese also, and Icelandic also has mostly gorgeous words like efne / verða / fer / eyra / nafni / leita / hef / hafið / drekka / líf / dreki / samviska / logn / vindinn / viska / hæna / garðinn / sófn etc - I can’t stop learning new pretty words in Old Norse and Icelandic (and the other pretty languages) and they are really áddìctive to look at and read and hear in lyrics etc, I’ve been listening to Skáld songs in Old Norse and Icelandic since I found the first song in Old Norse (Troll Kalla Mik) and I’ve memorized most of those lyrics!

    I speak Mandarin fluently. Which is easiest and hardest to learn next? Cantonese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean?

    • @polyglotdreams
      @polyglotdreams  7 місяців тому

      Cantonese pronunciation is a challenge even though you are fluent in Mandarin. Over 50% of the vocabulary in Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese is of Chinese origin. Japanese and Korean are the most similar to each other grammatically and compound sentences are formed the way they are in Mandarin either the main clause last. Japanese is the hardest to read and write... it helps if you also know traditional characters. I hope that helps.

    What a joy. :) I remember when school was going to start forcing us to learn English and I said "that's dumb, we are never going to use it" back in 1996 (I was 10) and thankfully the spark ignited early once I realized that my favorite TV show friends as well as my then favorite group spice girls was speaking/singing in English and soon after the internet boomed so thankfully my interest in English really took off early. After a few years I hit the intermediate plateau and I am SO grateful that learning was obligatory so that quitting wasn't an option because my love for language learning really started after that plateau. I hardcore identified as an English learner for a long time and I worked hard to "perfect" my English and 23 years deep I had to admit to myself that I wasn't really encountering new words to a rate that I could call myself a learner anymore and it was time to start a new language. I wanted a challenge that would keep be occupied for a long time so I chose Korean as my entry to Asian languages and I am so deeply in love with it! I can't wait to learn languages the rest of my life. :) My Korean listening comprehension is probably B1 but my speaking is stuck at A2 yet. I am so stuck on connecting shorter sentences into longer ones and I am hellbent on succeeding to overcome this in a year's time.
    Swedish is my native language so it will be incredibly fun to see how the joined experience of Korean vocabulary and Swedish pitch accent will be when learning Japanese next.

    Thank you very much for this video, it's so inspiring! I'm Italian and I speak English and French fluently (in addition to Italian, of course...). Then many years ago I started studying Hindi but abandoned it after a year for family reasons (young children & work & lack of time and organization..) ... But I was left with the desire and hope to be able to undestand it one day.
    Now that my children are grown up, I started volunteering at an organization helping the poor... I meet every day lots of people coming from Peru and speak only Spanish, as well as North African immigrants speaking only Arabic. To make it short, I started studying both Spanich (which is quite similar to Italian, actually, and rather easy for me) AND Arabic (which is difficult, but never mind) . But I've been regretting my Hindi so much that I decided to continue with that too.
    I fear this is "too much", especially as I'm not young anymore (I'm 59) but I hope I can manage to do it. But as I find that many people say learning two languages at the same time is complicated, I guess it's even worse with three...

    Доброго времени суток! В первую очередь, хочу поблагодарить Вас за такое замечательное и мотивирующее видео! А во-вторых, даже сейчас я пишу этот комментарий без задней мысли о том, что мне нужно его обязательно перевести на английский, ведь скорее всего вы изучали русский язык тоже.. Вы правда удивительный человек! Только восхищения...

    I would love to see another video on more details on the process of learning from movies or TV programs. I know you said you listen to it multiple times, but did you stop a lot at first to look up words, or did you just keep listing until it made sense from context, etc.?

    • @polyglotdreams

      It is most effective if you can read the text (subtitles, closed captions) and study the unfamiliar words. You might even want to make notes on the most interesting vocabulary and phrases.

      @@polyglotdreams You're welcome Tim. Seriously you are breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed your video (and I only found out about you today). Your empathy and encouragement to all of us learners shines through in your other videos too. Obviously I speak English, mas eu falo portugues tambem (desde o ano passado). 我也会讲中文(普通话) ,我已经学了五年多了. Indeed a different life CAN be lived through the experience of my three main languages and I love it. By the way as I am from Ireland I also learned Irish at school, but unfortunately I don't have as many oppotunities to use it in real life. However if you are interested in it another unique richness of expression with all kinds of special grammatical points that I haven't seen elsewhere, that could be for you a language journey to pursue in future. Go néirí an bóthar leat agus go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl . (May the road rise to meet you and the wind be always at your back)

      @eoinobeirne9928 as you see from my name, I am of Irish descent and am interested in learning the language... it is just that so many other languages get in the way lol😅... I mean I concentrate on languages I can use in the near future.

    Hello I’m from Thailand
    I just know you after watch this video I admire you a lot you have skillful on polyglot wow even I’m not understand 100% of this video but some tip is useful for me.
    English is very hard for me to learn there are so much about vocabulary when I translate in Thai is very confusing . It is because the meanings are very similar. It’s hard to understand sometime and to recognize them😱
    But anyway thank you for sharing and you are my inspiration to find the way to learn new language 🙏❤️✨

      I am so pleased to read your comment and now that it can help you in learning English. I love the Thai languages and culutre. There are seme big differences between Thai culture and the culture of most English-speaking countires... and that can also make it more challenging for you. Keep studying and practicing... and I look forward to your comments in the future.

    I needed this… I have hope. Learning mandarin and have been so discouraged. My Chinese friends (from China) tell me I’m doing good. But I get to the point where I’m just able to speak some sentences. It’s only been 1 week but it’s been bad to the point I’m depressed because of disappointment within myself for not having learned quicker each day I set time aside for a few hours.

    Hi Tim how are you? My name is Jonathas, I'm from Brazil and my native language is Portuguese, but I learned Spanish because my stepmom is Uruguayan and English and Russian I learned by myself and I'm studying to be an English teacher. I really love learning new languages, I was learning French and German but I took a break, I'll be resuming very soon learning them, I also want to learn other languages in the future like Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Indonesian, Arabic, Polish, Serbian, Ukrainian and maybe Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I found out your channel from Wouter Corduwener. You're such an inspiration.

However I was wondering about some basic tips you have on narration creation.
