I'm a Maryland Heights resident. I believe the house prices have more to do with their size and age. It's also rare to have a 2 car garage. Everyone here is aware of the landfills and superfund sites. I've never smelled the landfills from my house. The wind generally blows to the northeast.

I think the most ironic thing about this area is they named it "Earth" city at a radioactive sight. Maryland Heights does look pretty in fall.

When I'm driving on I-70 in Earth City, I always put my car on recirculation because I don't want to smell that landfill. I definitly wouldn't want to work in that area.

No mention of the guns and roses riot at riverport amphitheater in Maryland heights? That was a hell of a night!

I remember that! My middle-aged neighbors, who thought they were young hipsters, went to that concert. Next morning they had a 3-seat section of those blue seats leaning against their garage. I thought "Yup, it figures!".

I went to Pattonville, they also still use the Pattonville name for all the fire department branches within Pattonville limits. I also went to one of the elementary schools that was tore down in the Carrolton subdivision for the airport expac.
If you want to see a neighborhood really effected by the landfill sites, look at Spanish Lake on the west side of I-270 and the Rock Road. They offered to buy out those homes, some sold, some did not.

The Rams former training facility is now a youth sports complex! It's a top notch complex, the best that NFL money can buy. On occasion my granddaughter's soccer club has a game there. I've smelled the smell. I describe it as a rotten cantaloupe & onions mix.

Great job, Chris! By the way, have you added this video to your St. Louis Suburbs playlist? I checked the list and didn't see it there, although I did see your videos on Bridgeton, Lemay, and Pacific in that list. Not complaining...just wondering if you forgot. Grew up in St. Charles myself, but spent a good deal of time in Bridgeton and St. Ann. Not as much time in Maryland Heights, but it's not that far away. Just love reminiscing about places I used to go. Thanks for doing this! Really appreciate it!

I've been taking walks around my neighborhood here whenever the weather's nice for the past few years and have yet to smell the landfill. I'd say the stench has a radius of maybe half a mile tops (though that may not necessarily rule out health impacts). I only remember noticing it when I visited a business basically next door to the landfill itself.
I'd suspect much of the reason for lower home prices has to do with the house and lot sizes relative to market trends, as a lot of the housing stock here might be a bit small for the tastes of a stereotypical family of four (though ideal for smaller families looking to save a buck). Airport proximity's another reason to consider. While MH is far enough off the main flight patterns that passing aircraft aren't obnoxiously loud, they can be audible indoors.

I live in Maryland Heights by the Community Center, Pool, and bike trail to Creve Coeur Lake and the 200 mile Katy Bike Trail, with deer in my backyard at night. Smaller homes like ours are coming back in style.

Maryland Heights is extremely depressing and run down. It's close to Earth City and when the wind blows right Maryland Heights smells disgusting. I would never shower, let alone use the water. It's rated 'okay'. The homes they showed are typical. Very old and run down. Enough said.

I’m all for being proud of your hometown. But I truly don’t understand how people in the STL metro think it’s a nice place to live. I travel there a few times a year, and the whole metro (even the “nicer” suburbs are complete dumps. Polluted, high crime, crumbling infrastructure. Go to nearly any other midwestern city (Even KC) and the difference is night and day. The upper middle class parts of St. Louis are on par with the worst parts of many other cities.

    oh god.. Earth City
I work there, and while my workplace isn't that bad, the road layout
    really sucks
Rider Trail South is SO BAD in terms of "shape!" Like... I can only IMAGINE the level of neglect that allowed a *mostly-concrete* stretch of road to crumble THAT MUCH
Some of the WORST ROADS in the county I've ever seen are in Earth "City". Yet.. St. Louis County can't be "fucked" to fix any of it. I even reported Rider Trail's bs and gave a detailed description.
Did they do anything about it?
NOPE! Not even responding to my concern..
Most that happens is MODOT does some occasional work on Earth City Expressway (a stretch of 141-N) (and sometimes refills 2 huge potholes near the intersection that goes left onto Rider Trail)
more like 'Earth District', tbqh. It's basically just a shit-ton of manufacturing plants, warehouses, about 20 office buildings, a few fast food places, a few hotels, and a handful of gas stations? lol
Hell, going ONTO the entrance ramp back onto I-70W from Earth City is INSANE. and the exit ramp from I-70E onto EC expwy is similarly screwed
It's technically "Under the jurisdiction" of the County, but... not like they 'give a shit', apparently. They just set it up in 1994 and then... pretend it "doesn't exist", I guess?
...except when, once in a blue moon, a cop car might come around. or maybe fire truck or ambulance
