LJ54 what if they randomly changed the name of the Empire State Building to Bob Tower? That’s what it feels like when people call the Sears tower the Willis tower.
When it was sold they tried to get rid of the name: SEARS SKYDECK altogether. That did not go over too well! They had to find a way to keep "Skydeck" in it. _Time Magazine_ called it the worst name change, and the fourteenth worst corporate name change. They laughingly said it sounded like, "Whathca' doin' Willis!" The naming rights run out in 2024, and it could conceivibly be renamed.
Tip from a Chicago local: Ignore the pedestrian street signs. Drivers will plow right through a person, even when that person has the right of way, but they're a lot more careful about crowds, even when the driver's light is green. So ignore the pedestrian signals, and just cross in crowds or groups, whenever they happen to be crossing.
That’s why I always have my hi-vis on and I do my stutter step into the street and stare them down, at least when I’m actually at a crosswalk 😂 both the pedestrians and drivers here have that “you gonna stop for me” attitude 😂
@Chris Brzezniak I don’t think you can compare the two, I mean you can but it’s not even apples to oranges, it’s like apples to cows. India has a population of over a billion and is stock a developing country. So yeah…India “wins”
Even with a large crowd, during rush hour, in the Loop, some drivers still don't pay attention. Since the drivers make up their own rules, pedestrians do too. We all have a story about stupid drivers. Not me, but my friend. A car hit her when she had the right of way and was in a crowd and threw her into the intersection. She was knocked out, so all those commuters helped pull her onto the sidewalk with her stuff while they called 911. Driver complained because he wanted to make a right turn on red and they all should have stopped for him. That's another lesson too. We might act like angry big city people, but deep down, we're still Midwest folks and were raised to be kind. Don't be afraid to ask for directions or whatever. Even the homeless people I've encountered are always willing to go out of their way to help.
I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, and i used to visit via the CNW train. Recently I went to Chicago, and it was NOT what it used to be. It isn't the wreck Detroit is, but it wasn't what it used to be.
Don't drive is great advice. You'll have a red light camera, speeding camera, meter violation, and tollway violation ticket all in a single day. Have a nice day.
@@MaximusTheChosenOne I must have missed the sign when Chicago illegally lowered the yellow light duration below the states required minimum to profit by tens of millions annually on red light camera tickets. They were sued for that and lost. Those are the folks you're up against when you come to Chicago. The government here will break the law to get into your wallet. Have a nice day.
I visited Chicago last June, and it was my first time in the US. I was deeply moved by the experience, and I left with tears in my eyes. America truly captured my heart. Sending warm Italian hugs from Luxembourg ❤🇱🇺!
Well people in the suburbs say the live in Chicago when they are out of town. Unless you live in Schaumburg, Aurora, Naperville. Most people haven’t heard of the small towns like Itasca per say,
From Illinois. Fuckin everyone says theyre from Chicago, Im guilty too. Just easier since I live in a small ass town noones heard of. Glad Im close enough to go to chicago anytime tho.
I live in Japan now after 25 years in Chicago and recently met a Japanese guy who went to college at UIC downtown. I told him I’m from Chicago and he said “are you really? Or from the suburbs?” Immediately. It’s so true
Chicago here. LOL Ravenswood and then Edgebrook. I went to UIC for 2 years and then graduated in Evanston at National Louis. I miss home so much. I've been at the beach the past 23 years in FL. But I'm leaving. Too many Hitlery things going on. I can't wait to move home!! SEARS TOWER ;)
Del Yates I have been watching on UA-cam this officer who works 4 CPD Describe how terrible the crime is there. It's a war zone. How do u leave YOUR house without possibly getting killed? From the videos it appears to be the south and west side of Chicago. Innocent people are getting slain by stray bullets. The gang shooters have no value for human life. How do u began to solve that problem. Is it drugs, poverty, Bad parenting, or lack of jobs? Maybe it's a combination of all of them. My heart goes out to all of the law abiding citizens in Chicago. Any death caused by a drive by shooter should get the death penalty.
As a Native here, def do the boat tour. I used to think it was dumb and cheesy, but it's definitely worth it. And yes, do not stay in the Loop too long. Chicago is all about the neighborhoods, the best part is in the neighborhoods.
Meme Cremé Yeah I know what you mean although my classes are pretty spread out from each other so I have more time to leave the loop every once in a while
Best advice from a Chicagoan... DONT JUST STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SIDEWALK TO TAKE Pics. There are ppl behind you. You will get bumped. Pay attention to your surroundings. Your not the only person here. Thanks!🙏🏼
I was born & raised in a suburb. Went to Chicago all the time on family outings to museums, field trips with teachers for everything from theater to art galleries to the Baha'i Temple in Wilmette. Amazing! Moved here when I was 22. Landed a job in an industry I loved (and hated) and did it over 40 years. Met the man of my dreams who happens to be a born-and-raised Chicagoan. There's so much bad about Chicago but it can't begin to touch all the goodness and greatness here, all the friendliness and community, all the beauty to be found inside and out.
Very much appreciated comment, deep and inciteful. The good in this world far outweighs that bad. It's just that the bad gets all the press. When the good people finally have had enough...watch out motherfuckers. We coming for you.
..."There's so much bad about Chicago but it can't begin to touch all the goodness and greatness here, all the friendliness and community, all the beauty to be found inside and out." I moved here when I retired from a lifetime of nursing. I didn't want to get bored so we bought a place in South loop. I love it!! best decision ever. I'll never get bored in retirement.
This guy’s a GREATT SPEAKER ! He’s very energetic and doesn’t overload you with unnecessary information. More like “just in case” situations. My dude 💪
I love how you started off with “don’t drive in Chicago” if you’re not from here. IT’s really appreciated bc as a Chicagoan, it’s frustrating when someone who isn’t from here can’t drive with the flow of traffic. Thanks for pointing out that we also have other options of transportation. Love the video
@@g.d.9619 Yeah. Don't do either, but definitely don't rent a car. I was in Chicago for 10 days last summer. If you really need an Uber or Lyft, you can get one, but unless you're partying late at night in some outlying area, you'll probably never need anything but the El (and maybe Metra if you're going to a suburb) and your two feet. It's a great city to walk in.
@michaelLaderman-pk5mn lol. What's El and metra? Rental is only $58 plus I will feel.safer. I will likely be close to the airport for an event but 1 day, just wanted to look around.
I've gotta disagree with the winter part. Don't come here in winter. It is frighteningly cold. I know that people from Canada or wisconsin will say "oh you dont know cold," but people shouldn't visit your cities in winter either. Tommorrow it will be -50 with windchill
I told this to my friends this very thing when we were trying to go on a road trip to Smokey Mountains in Dec of 2017 to escape the cold from Detroit. They were adamant that we go to Chicago first for a day and then take I65 south. Went there, parked the car after hunting for a parking spot for 2 hours, and they were back in the car after 15 mins. Had to take pics with our nose coz nobody wanted to take their gloves off.. We did not stop until we reached Lafayette, IN where we found some sunshine.. 🤣🤣 Fun Times.. This was Dec 26-27 2017..
@Thomas Bob I also agree with your other part abbout Canada n WI. Me and my friends went to School in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, which gets as cold as Canada, and I live in GB WI now. Both places we get tonnes of snow and blizzards, more than Chicago.. But its the WIND in chicago.. It can fuck you up pretty quickly.. Even for us seasoned cold dwellers, Chicago was colder.. I love that city though.. And so does my Mom and Sis who visited from India.. They loved Chicago more than NYC..
@Irish South Sider Oh, yeah you're near the Museum. Well, I live in the boring Nothwest side, but we come down there to go to Thalia Hall, hit the restaurants, etc.
Do not listen to the people who say avoid the south and westside. Those neighborhoods are apart of Chicago and have so much culture in them. If you only visit the north neighborhoods you will be missing so many cool restaurants. My favorite restaurant is called Scatchell's. They have the best cheese fries, Italian beef, pizza, and Italian ice. The best restaurants are in the "bad neighborhoods". Most of the people in "those" neighborhoods will not even look your way if you visit. P.S. Harolds on 87th street is the best place to go. (There is a Harold's in the loop)
Yeah. A lot of the crime is gang on gang, and they won't care as long as you're not involved with said gangs. That being said, carjackings and muggings are not unheard of and you still have to keep your wits about you.
ashley778909 uh no lol as someone born in the south side I would not advise tourists to go walking around that area 😂😂😂 fast way to get robbed or possibly killed. I get it you don’t want people to think bad about those areas but it’s real life. Stay out of the south side unless you’re familiar with it.
Don't be afraid to talk to random Chicagoans. Unlike in most big cities, most of us are accustomed to talking to strangers on trains, in the elevator, on the street, etc.. That said, if someone is avoiding eye contact, or wearing headphones, etc., they're not the one's to start a convo with just then. Also be aware that on the Metra, there are several "silent" cars, so keep an eye out for those.
I'd say it would be a bit weird to chat peeps up on the bigger streets with mostly businesses. Usually randos that try to chat me up there are beggars who I ignore. Everywhere else tho is chill as long as you can read people.
Don't limit yourself to deep dish pizza. Chicago is known for deep dish pizza, but nobody here really eats it. Our lesser known style of pizza is tavern-style pizza, where it's a thin crust-style pizza that's cut into squares instead of triangles. It's just as amazing as deep dish.
It irritates me that people refer to neighborhoods on the north side, like “I live in Lakeview” or “Lincoln Park”, etc. But they refer to the south side like it’s just one huge cesspool of crime. The south side is made up of neighborhoods just like the north side. And they are not all the same, and they are not all crime-ridden! There are lovely pockets, cool places/attractions and historical areas like Hyde Park, Kenwood, North Kenwood, The Gap, Chatham Proper, The Highlands, the nicer parts of South Shore, and Beverly Hills. I’ll grant that I personally wouldn’t want to live in most neighborhoods of the south side. But don’t lump it all together and consider it as all the same.
A bit further north, Bronzeville, Bridgeport, and Armour Square are all very nice. Everyone's thinking Englewood or something when they say south side.
@Ambient Morality - Yep, exactly. They think it's all like Englewood or something, so true. I grew up in Hyde Park and North Kenwood. Those and Bronzeville are my stomping grounds. The south side, and east toward the lake in the 3000's, 4000's - I love that whole area.
Great point. Because people today don't want to do anything but lump people and places together as one type of thing. Thanks to shitty American politics.
1. Architectural tours are a must. The boat ones are great, and the walking ones are amazing, too. There is everything from gorgeous art nouveau to skyscrapers taller than you can imagine. The interiors are often times the most breathtaking part. 2. North Avenue beach (free), Lincoln Park Zoo (free), and the Botanical Gardens is an amazing day. No car. No bus. All walking distance from each other with a hypnotizing view of the city. When you are done, go for a walk in the neighborhoods. Safe, clean, and gorgeous. 3. Ask for help or directions or even recommendations from complete strangers. Yep. Chicagoans are helpful (as long as they aren’t on their way to work) and friendly. 4. Stay in the Magnificent Mile or Near North Side over the Loop. Things are open later and there is life after 7pm. 5. Be prepared if you come in July, August, or September. Chicago is hot and humid. 90-100F and it feels like you are walking through soup. Closer to the lake is always better, cooler, and with a nice breeze. Well, almost always. 6. Winter? January and February are often when Chicagoans get excited for anything above 12F (don’t forget the wind chill). March is warmer but the wind is painful. 7. Workers in stores, tourist locations, really any customer service are not always as nice as the random person walking down the street. 8. There is more than just unhealthy food. Still, try the unhealthy food. It is sooo good.
For point number 6, does the architectural boat tour still run in December? I'm planning to visit Chicago in December and want to know whether the tour stops during the colder months.
@@dylanlingham7296 , There are several boat tour companies, and Wendella Boats does have schedules thru December, and the Chicago Architecture River Cruise and Shoreline Cruises have December dates 1,2,3 only listed. Weather may affect scheduling. They all have websites for more information.

Quick tip from a Chicago waitress: Take a minute to find the local diner/pancake house/family restaurant close to your hotel or your day's planned destination and go there for breakfast! Hotel breakfast is almost always either terrible or overly fussy and expensive. Chicago breakfast spots have really good food, usually huge menus most nowadays have vegan, gluten free and non dairy options as well. Also a great place to people watch take in local flavor and plan your day. Folks in Chicago tip well for good service (15-20%) and they expect it, so you'll prob get it. Talk to your server, they'll have great insider info for you on the neighborhood.
I wish you guys paid a decent wage to people so we don't have to do this confusing tipping thing where everyone acts like it's an actual mandatory tax. :( going to US and tipping is what I dread most, well maybe getting shot by police or airport security, lol.
At one point, Chicago was considered the most culturally diverse culinary scene. I don't know if that's still true, but we really do have everything. We have tons of amazing restaurants that are Michelin rated (and similar top awards) and you can still get into without a reservation. Lots of top chefs actually praise the food scene in Chicago (Gordon Ramsey is the first one that comes to mind as he is popular outside of the culinary world).
I can't stand it when people talk as if Chicago is compromised only of Downtown and the Suburbs. There is a HUGE city in between. Many, many neighborhoods that make up Chicago!!!!
Stop being overly Sensitive, when a person is a tourist and don't know the place, they're going to See the Landmark, not Spend every Cent they have exploring the surrounding areas. Don't be Stupid and ignorant (I can't stand it!!!!!!!), in case your ignorance and stupidity didn't allow you to think, tourists and visitors have limited amount of time and limited resources and don't have a LIFETIME to Stay and Study the Geography to Lecture to the World. Southsiders love it when people talk badly about the Southside. It keeps outsiders from coming in and finding all the gems like beautiful neighborhoods and parks, plenty of parking space and great, unique restaurants, stores and entertainment. Plus, a tremendous amount of history. Please, stay away. Believe the violent stories. You'll get hurt.
@@BettyAAkins I wish more people came... it's sad that so many neighborhoods have faced declining populations, and I'd love to see the south side come alive. That being said, the more likely outcome of revitalization is just gentrification and cultural displacement...
my brother took me to this city to visit his youngest son (Last week) and we was in the Hancock building bar, AMAZING view. We had the deep dish from the very place you're showing in this Video and your right on the money about it. There was a delay in serving us, so the management paid for our drinks and appetizers, that was very nice of them. It's truly an international with all the people I seen there.
This is true! Chicago's thin crust pizzas are one of the best kept secrets. Nationally, people only think we have good deep dish pizza. Wrong! Various thin crust pizzas in Chicago are amazing, and it's a different kind of thin crust pizza than New York thin crust.

We got some of the best damn horn bands ever: Chicago. Liquid Soul... i know drummers (Danny Seraphine and myself included) who joined blues bands as a favor- never played blues ONCE. It's in the blood and you can't get it unless you were *born here.* lol
Couple of tips: Navy Pier = Chicago's version of Times Square: Go once, ride the ferris wheel, take pics of the skyline, and maybe catch a cruise. But DON'T eat there! You can find most of the same food within a mile of the Pier and for cheaper. Everything is hella marked up since most people don't think to eat ahead of time or don't want to leave to go eat, so customers shell out the extra cash and the restaurants (and the city) profits tremendously. Also, if you're going to get deep dish, only get it once. Otherwise, you'll get sick of it (and miss out on Chicago's other amazing food options). And if you like Mexican food, Chicago has the best Mexican food east of the Mississippi (it's seriously good enough to rival anything in Los Angeles), but you have to go down to the southwest side to the heart of Chicago's Mexican community to get the best of it.
Chinatown for legit regional Chinese food. Pilsen for authentic Mexican. Express Grill for quality cheap Chicago dogs/brats (SKIP PORTILLOS). Chicago's or Uno pizza for deep dish. Fat Willy's for BBQ. Al's for Italian beef. Harold's Chicken for the BEST fried chicken you'll ever have. And hit up the food trucks for tacos & other light noms; there are always several options in Humboldt Park ;)
Take your guests along LSD or along Michigan Avenue at night.. .then find a place to EAT.Drop them off at Lincoln Park zoo or Navy Pier then...pick them up!
@@daniellinehan63 There are free places like the museum of Mexican art and the Garfield Park Conservatory, but you should be polite and donate. Also, those aren't exactly known as tourist destinations the same way as Navy Pier or the Bean but they are noteworthy if you want to go off the beaten path and see Chicago like a local
I wish people would do that when driving too. Mexico, Switzerland, China do it. They just use the left lane to get ahead of the car in front and go back to the right lane. Here in the US people occupy all lanes while driving at the same speed... so annoying
Great post! You got everything just about right except 1. Locals do the touristy stuff too we just don't get distracted staring up at the buildings on our way from one attraction to the other and 2. There is more to Chicago than downtown and the suburbs! This is the city of neighborhoods! So if there are tourists like yourself who come here multiple times, do some research and go visit areas that are not near Michigan Avenue. We are culturally rich in heritages beyond mainstream consumerism and people not from here should visit other areas and meet real local, native Chicagoans
I'd like to visit some, but quite frankly, Chicago under the light foot administration is a scary place and even though she's gone, the damage has been done so I tried to just stay in the touristy areas.
Had a friend once who parked his car in a garage in downtown Chicago. The attendants took it for a joyride and put a ton of miles on it. He had borrowed it from a friend's dad without permission and the mileage had to be exactly right or he would've figure out they had taken it, so they tried putting it on a jack stand and holding the gas pedal down in reverse to get the odometer to go backwards. Long story short, it didn't work and eventually it fell off the stand and crashed through some glass, landing at the bottom a wooded area. Moral of the story, don't park in Chicago garages, just take the L.
As an Evanston resident who loves Chicago, I have a couple more tips: 1. Don't skip Little Village or Pilsen (two predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods on the city's west side). Along with some of the most authentic Mexican food in the country, Pilsen especially is known for its colorful murals and 26th Street in Little Village is known as "Mexico of the Midwest." These neighborhoods are also great places to meet locals. 2. Also, don't be too scared when it comes to safety. Sure, Chicago has a lot of crimes committed, but it also has a population of 2 million people, plus several more million who live in the suburbs, so the crime isn't as bad as the media portrays it to be. Just use common sense, and don't be afraid to visit the city's south and west sides (the "bad" sides). Despite their reputation, there are many great places within these neighborhoods, and you'll definitely get more out of your trip than if you just stay in the touristy parts of the city. 3. Also, if you drive in, many of the CTA "L" lines have Park and Ride stations, where you can leave your car and take public transit downtown (or anywhere else you might be going).
Close to the lake front is generally safe, west side east of the stadium and south side north of sox park is generally OK. Any tourist destination during the day is OK. Traffic and parking more than a mile or two from the Art Institute is not so bad unless there is a sporting event going on.
@@BlattGaming 26th Street in Little Village feels safer, although I have to pass through Lawndale when I get off the Pink line at Pulaski. Lawndale makes Pilsen look like the West Loop. Pilsen should be fine as long as you stick to major streets (18th, Damen, Ashland, Blue Island, and Cermak are the big ones) and travel in groups.
@@michellee3441 I haven't been to LA in years, but from what I know is that we were stuck in traffic for about four hours. I live in Chicago, I know the traffic. It won't take you four hours to go from point A to point B, even if you aren't in Cook County.
He's on point! Lol love how he brings up the Sears tower vs Willis and calling people out who claim they're from Chicago when they're actually from some suburb.
And the Sox play at Comiskey Park, I don’t care what anyone tries to tell you! You are correct though, a drink at the Signature Room in the Hancock at sunset on a clear day is a lovely experience.
26th is great west of Sacramento. That's Little Village. Little Village is one of the best neighborhoods for Mexican food, and 26th street is usually busy and quite safe. If you get into larger numbers, such as 63rd or 71st, especially east of Western. Even those neighborhoods are probably fine if you know where you're going and you use your street smarts.
Just came here with my wife for vacation for a week! First time ever! And oh my gosh! We were blown away! What a cool, beautiful city! We did so many things, but know we just barely tipped the iceberg of to-do’s in the City!
He doesn't live in the city and doesn't know about many things....he just spoke about touristy stuff. You know what he forgot to mention? You DON'T put ketchup on a hot dog here....very important.
If someone says they're from Chicago. Ask them from what part. If they can't name an area or neighborhood within the city limits. They're not from the city.
I visit Chicago two to three times a year and I can’t stress how important it is to NOT STOP on the sidewalk. I mean seriously it’s not that hard haha. I’ve seen so many people just standing in the middle of the sidewalk because they’re lost
I don’t mind that so much. Just don’t take a year to snap that perfect shot. What I hate are the morons who stop their car mid intersection to check their gps. I’m not kidding. Traffic hits the brakes and 10 horns go off. You see the person get all frazzled and pull over and you wonder why they didn’t do that in the first place.
ritaroad to be honest, in Downtown Chicago with highrises and multiple levels of roads the GPS goes to shit. I have screwed up myself so many times myself. Now after being to Chicago so many times I dont need a GPS and just follow the signs in downtown and the loop. Fun fact, the first time I was heading to ORD, the garmin GPS took me to the employee entrance which was like 8 miles away and around the terminals. 😂
Omg thank you for the PSA on the peeps who stop at a moments notice and for way too long! we who live here have gotten quite good at dodging the stoppers (stupid stopping tourists) I hate how people are so damn lacodasial when they are with a group of people. Hey, I’m all for taking things slow at times BUT we do have places to go and being downtown we walk pretty much everywhere so when 10-20 people stop at once or are walking basically backwards and taking up entire sidewalks it’s annoying!!!

As a Northside Chicagoan here are my tips: 1) Do be mindful of neighborhoods you go in to. Even the Northside has some troublesome neighborhoods, but for the most part it's a great city. 2) I've never even been a fan of deep dish. I, like others have said, like the tavern style thin crust cut into squares. Putting ketchup on a hotdog is a no-no but I think there's a lot who are closet ketchup users. 4)WE HAVE AMAZING TACOS EVERYWHERE. 5) Parking does suck when visiting popular areas ie: Downtown/Wrigley Field(Lincoln Park). But it's not impossible to drive around. 6) our suburbs can be nice spots to travel to ie Rosemont, Evanston in northside. Great America isn't in Chicago but you can get there in an hour 7) Summer in Chicago is great! Winter can suck, but it doesn't always stop having a good time out. 8) Don't talk crap about our sports teams, even if a certain team is sucking right now, unless you want to get in a fight. If you're from Detroit you'll prob hear Detroit sucks at some point...nothing personal. And Green and Gold are colors of evil in this city. 9) Don't get in between Cubs vs White Sox you may inadvertently get hit by either side 10) Uber and Lyft is a Godsend. CTA is cheap though and will get you everywhere. It does get congested and some trains are just...yuck. 11) MICHAEL JORDAN IS THE GOAT NOT EVEN A QUESTION... 12) SEARS TOWER....who's this Willis guy? 13) Definitely don't call it Chiraq! 14) Enjoy yourself. This city has so much to offer :) PS: if some guy gets mad at you just say out loud what is fact in number 11. You'll be best friends forever after that.
Downtown/Wrigley isn't Lincoln Park, tho. :) I live here. Lived in DePaul 40 yrs. You can't PAY me to go to Wrigley during a stupid game, tho...they literally jump in front of the car, thinking I'm going to pay them to park. I've come REALLY close to taking off my shoe and beating these guys with it. Wrigley could burn down tomorrow far as I'm concerned (so could Comiskey, to be fair). Never seen so many drunks in one place in my life. Worst concert sound I've ever heard (The Police, the 1st time), including bad bar bands by barflies who can't mix to save themselves, lol. I like the 7th inning stretch, not the same since Carey, tho. The bad singers crack me up. :) I don't trust any driving service where they guy buys a new car to make 5.00 on a ten-minute ride. That's someone who can't add, and I shouldn't entrust my life with. :) I've heard similar "moron" stories from other drivers, too. Costs more to start the car and get there and back than you made. I DEFINITELY didn't trust their 20-page EULA and i wouldn't agree to it. They get to use my info however they want? It's in there. Nope. Don't agree. :)
Born and raised in Calumet City. I married a country boy from Missouri and it's where I live now. My husband says when I get mad, my Chicago accent comes out strong.
i adore you, my man. 5th-generation Chicagoan here (from the actual city, tyvm), and you nailed it! so much great advice and tips. from sears, to food, to the boat tour, you're on it. we rarely know how lucky we were to have it all til we leave; it's an amazing city: accessible, friendly, and has all the food. suburbs are great; check out Naperville's riverwalk, Oak Park's architecture, and The Botanic Garden in Glencoe. and every single person, local or tourist, should do the architectural boat tour. #1 must.
@61gisele , When I was growing up in Chicago we said they were building the tallest oil derrick on the world. Ugly cross bracing to reduce wind induced bending. It figures an insurance company would request something so un-pretty, but as is well known: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Located in the Magnificent Michigan Avenue Mile area. Sears Tower was built in the middle of ? The blandest part of the business area. It also twists too much in the wind.
I ended up in Chicago back in May 2018. I say ‘ended up’ because it was the final destination of my train trip on Amtrak’s California Zephyr from San Francisco. I really wasn’t expecting much, just a few days, then fly back to my home town of Sydney, Australia. Well, let me tell you, I loved Chicago. I wish I’d spent longer there. I was even there for the Memorial Day parade, although I didn’t know beforehand. How cool was that? It kinda reminded me a bit of a slightly larger version of Melbourne, Australia, my favourite city in Oz. I plan on going back to Chicago and spending more time there. So if you’re going to the States, don’t miss Chicago. You’ll love it. And btw, the traffic and the driver’s are much worse in Sydney.
He didn't mention that the reason most of the things on his list are on his list is because Chicago is extremely segregated. Like literally, the reason most people stay downtown, are afraid to venture out, the death of the Chicago accent and the everyone (white) who says they're from Chicago being from the suburbs or out is due to segregation. In the 50s, 60s and 70s white people moved out of the city to the suburbs and took the Chicago accent with them. So most people of color you meet in Chicago will actually live in the city and be born and raised there, but most white people will either be transplanted from another city or from the suburbs. ....Don't just get out of Downtown, try other areas like Chinatown, Pilsen or Hyde Park
I got on at the Roosevelt stop up to Jackson and that short trip was handful seen a girl rolling a blunt and got called some names on the way down to the train.
Only if you dont look out the window when the plane is landing. Everytime I've flown into midway, I've thought we were going to hit the wall or the streetlight.
Me and my 9 year old son just got back from Chicago yesterday. We try and take a trip there at least once each spring/summer. I think this was our 3rd or fourth time now. ... I want to go back already!!!! Lol! Like you said.. there's just so many things to do. Last few times we stayed just off Michigan Ave not far from this cool skateboard park and just a few minute walk from the Field Museum. Now this year we were again just off Michigan Ave but right along Wacker Dr. Only a handful of blocks away but so much different things at yur fingertips! The Riverwalk was awesome! Great food. And yes that much closer to Millennium Park and Navy Pier. The water taxi is great! Reasonably priced! Next trip I really need to get brave and use the local train! Even more is I should take Amtrak to Chicago and avoid all the parking issues and expense. Truly and awesome city to experience!
I agree with most of what he said. The CTA is awesome! Avoid the south side and West side. The architecture of many buildings downtown are beautiful! Signed -Chicagoan.
If someone actually lives or has a business within the Chicago city limits, their landline area code will be either 312 (Loop & close-in areas) or 773, and their zip code will start with "606" -- i.e. 60602 for City Hall.
If you wanna hear a Chicago accent go to the working class parts of the south side. It’s the best place to really see the true culture of Chicago and you’ll stay safe. Oh and don’t forget about the Sox...we’re pretty cool too :))
Being born and raised there: DON'T EVER CALL IT THE WILLIS TOWER!
IT'S SEARS TOWER!
You got that right the Sears tower is the Sears tower and all state arena is the Rosemont Horizon bitches!

So basically how it was for me in India lol. Go in groups and crowds and it's fine. Going solo is sketchy.
Bro this ain't India 😂 all I have to say is watch out for the taxi drivers cuz they don't care.

@@g.d.9619 Yeah. Don't do either, but definitely don't rent a car. I was in Chicago for 10 days last summer.

I'm from uptown and the North side has always been fucked up
A bit further north, Bronzeville, Bridgeport, and Armour Square are all very nice.

Lmao real tips in the comments
Chicago is a very beautiful city, I loved it. The people who are from there are very nice, always willing to help with directions.
Couple of tips:
Navy Pier = Chicago's version of Times Square: Go once, ride the ferris wheel, take pics of the skyline, and maybe catch a cruise.
@@MlleFeralMinette YES to Harold's! The one off of 35th is probably the best one, and the one at Madison and Ogden is also good

Had a friend once who parked his car in a garage in downtown Chicago. The attendants took it for a joyride and put a ton of miles on it. Long story short, it didn't work and eventually it fell off the stand and crashed through some glass, landing at the bottom a wooded area. As an Evanston resident who loves Chicago, I have a couple more tips:
Only thing though. Pilsen's food culture is slowly dying.
I know right
Pilsen is an awful area. I felt like someone was going to jump me when I went there multiple times. It’s not safe especially later on in the evening.
Traffic can be bad in Chicago, but it isn’t as bad as like Los Angeles or New York.
Actually, the worst traffic I've seen was in Phoenix. Second worst was Honolulu.
I don’t think L.A had bad traffic compared to Chicago. I went in the summer

Easy safety tip, when you start hitting numbered streets you walked too far. 26th and California is not a festive place.

@@janieyellin628 I'm not from America but what came up when I searched Chicago on UA-cam was insane.
Its an ugly city and ugly state
As a Northside Chicagoan here are my tips:
1) Do be mindful of neighborhoods you go in to.
Great America isn't in Chicago but you can get there in an hour
7) Summer in Chicago is great!
9) Don't get in between Cubs vs White Sox you may inadvertently get hit by either side
10) Uber and Lyft is a Godsend.
This city has so much to offer :)
PS: if some guy gets mad at you just say out loud what is fact in number 11.
I don't trust any driving service where they guy buys a new car to make 5.00 on a ten-minute ride.

Most tourist stuff is free for military also.
that is cool to know!
Thank you! That's a good thing to know!
I agree with most of what he said. The CTA is awesome! Avoid the south side and West side. The architecture of many buildings downtown are beautiful! Signed -Chicagoan.
gotta get that military welfare!
Wait wut where
If they are actually from Chicago, their zip code will be 606..
Nora McNabb *Area code
ScorpioRising no one calls it an area code here
If someone actually lives or has a business within the Chicago city limits, their landline area code will be either 312 (Loop & close-in areas) or 773, and their zip code will start with "606" -- i.e. 60602 for City Hall.
312
B Steven I live in Chicago but for some reason mine is 224
If you wanna hear a Chicago accent go to the working class parts of the south side. It’s the best place to really see the true culture of Chicago and you’ll stay safe. Oh and don’t forget about the Sox...we’re pretty cool too :))
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen you can also get robed and/or shot lol south side is a shit hole
Landen Delormier Jesus it’s not that bad albeit not too great. Same with north side. Visit oak park or something like that
Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen wait, we have an accent here???
@Motorheadmike lol so true
Landen Delormier depends on where you go, it’s not all bad lmao, y’all don’t know shit
I live downtown Chicago and these are all very true!! I live here and I am still amazed by everything every day
