I really enjoyed this video, and was surprised to learn that Washington was a separate city originally from Georgetown and Cities in Virginia. It now makes sense to me!
As noted in the video, Alexandria, VA and Georgetown, MD were founded as towns before the Revolutionary War on the Fall Line. In 1785, George Washington backed the the "Patowmack Canal," to extend river traffic northwest to Cumberland, MD. While its construction and that of the new Capitol City may have begun 232 years ago, they were not finished by Washington's death in 1799. One fun quirk of the DC border and the Retrocession is based around the southern corner, located at Jones Point in Alexandria. The border stone still sits there, but because of the land being reclaimed by Virginia, the actual southern corner is in the Potomac just nearby. Coupled with Virginia controlling a narrow slice of the river in that area, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on I-95 and I-495 ends in Alexandria, VA and National Harbor, MD, but for a small portion over the river passes through this tiny corner of DC. I never lived in the DC area proper, but I did live for the first 25 or so years of my life only a couple hours away up the Potomac in WV's Eastern Panhandle, so I've been to the area a decent handful of times. One time I even got there by train from Martinsburg, so I had a rare experience with proper public transit in the US. ...Unfortunately the Amtrak line there is a bit run down and the first train stalled shortly into the trip, so we all had to cross to another train that came to take us the rest of the way to Union Station. Ended up a bit later to the convention than I intended, but not a huge deal all in all. And the DC Metro has always been just fine in my experiences, mainly the Red Line from Rockville to the city center. Great video, glad I'm caught up on this excellent series before WV or CO are up!
The DC Boundary stones are incredibly interesting! However, I am disappointing that I don't get a "Welcome to DC" sign on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge followed immediately by a "Welcome to Maryland" sign.

There's a 3rd part of DC outside of downtown and the area of townhouses and apartments. There are incredibly expensive neighborhoods of 3-5 bedroom homes west along the river in Georgetown before you get to Chevy Chase or Potomac. Prices range from $2M-$5M for houses that would be $800k-$2.5M across the river in Virginia. Maybe at most, 2300 square feet with at most an acre of land. That was when I was in high school in the early 2010s, I imagine they're more expensive now.

As someone who is regarded as one of Washington DC top tour guides &, historians i have some corrections... Mainly The US capital and the White House are the only two buildings in DC that do not have an actual completion date The residency act set forth the date in which the federal government should be in place November 1st 1800 however with John Adams moved in the White House only had six finished rooms and when Congress moved into the old house chamber the Senate side was still being completed the dome was non-existent, and that only did they move the house into that chamber but they also move the Senate the library of Congress and the supreme Court all inside of the old house chamber November 1st 1800 because construction on those buildings haven't even began yet.

Thorough and enjoyable as your videos always are. I would have mentioned the effect on the city's black population of FDR abolishing racial discrimination with civilian federal employment. That created a huge black middle class in Washington and several suburbs. Today, the retires along them, as well as white retirees and 2nd generation embassy families give Washington and Md. and Va. outlying communities a great deal of diversity among the more financially secure. The loss of pensions and opportunities has harmed the prospects of the baby boomer and young adult generations in or heading for retirement. And the red lining you described created new generations of poverty.

19:28 - Kentucky was a pivotal state for the Civil War... it's government chose to remain with the Union, while it's people wanted to be with the confederacy. Had the government chose to secede, the war would have turned out much different, as Kentucky called up 57 full regiments during the Civil War, and is undeniably at a geographic location that would have cut off the Ohio River and crippled the Union.
We don't need 51 states, the whole point of DC was to be a neutral place from all states. It needs to do what Virginia did and take back its land. Maryland needs to take back its land. Federal land should be just the federal buildings with a barrier around them, those 700K people can vote with Maryland on issues or what was the point of taking it from Virginia from the start
Maryland doesn’t want DC, and DC doesn’t want to be part of Maryland. Just give the citizens of DC representation in congress. It is the right of all Americans.
Unpopular opinion but I think Washington should abolish the 130 feet tall building height limit. If residential buildings could be taller it could help eliminate gentrification in black neighborhoods and give Washington a downtown core. If statehood becomes a thing the city will need a memorable downtown outside the federal district so people don’t confuse the two.

I'm not understanding where you got the MSA population numbers from. DC hasn't been in the 4 million range since the 2000s. It's currently the 6th Largest MSA in the U.S. with 6.3 million people. I'm just curious to know where you got your population numbers from.
Baltimore and Washington DC are brother metro cities in Maryland
Lets have crabs
🦀 are yummy
You did a great job, this from a DC native
Series idea, since you are doing all the states and territories etc, keep following the quarter series and do the parks next etc
This was awesome. I’ve haven’t visited the capital yet, but now I’m really looking forward to it 👍🏼
13:00 gotta love that John Smith map
Great info. Non biased and well informed.
Very good. Almost got it all correct! @27:23
To anyone curious about an interesting deep dive into the history of DC, checkout this episode of America Unearthed from the History Channel:

I'd suggest the book, 'The Secret Architecture of Our Nations Capitol' by David Ovason. The Masons denied it and than made him their official historian 😂
I love these and the fact that you don't use music.
THANK YOU WONDERFUL FILMS !!
Just subscribed! You’re videos are so informative and straightforward to the point. Will be watching more… 😊
Mind blown 🤯
Excellent. Thanks.
Bruh…. you did a fantastic job on this vid 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽💯
Props to you for mentioning the unofficial city motto!!!! When you come back and edit to correct or add, can you add the unofficial song “Welcome To DC” by Mambosauce.
I plan on taking a trip to DC one of these days. I really want to go to the Smithsonian and see the Hope Diamond.
Much learned, thanks.
I enjoyed this information you put together. Thanks.
21:00 Nobody can “change history”. Only the present.
but the story can be changed.
Was just binging this!! Love your work
Well done, packed with info. 😊
I was in Preschool for the DC Sniper and 9/11. My brother was in Kindergarten for the sniper and I remember him complaining about them cancelling recess because of it.
Awesome content and great work
"If you live in Arlignton and wade out into the Potmac River, you'll be in DC. I mean, you'll also be radioactive and get 6 unique diseases, but you'll be in DC.'
In all honestly, you stay up river from the city you're fine. We used to go off one of the GW parkway overlooks down to the water and jump from rope swings, and I kayaked in it quite a few times. But man, does it get gross after the Lee Highway bridge.
I've lived in many regions of the US and DC is easily my favorite city here. I absolutely love living here. Walkability, endless (free) things to do, and it's a great place to raise a kid. East coast has better cities. West coast has better outdoor recreation.
I wish I could afford to move, DC would be my first option💙💙💙
One question: How many neighborhoods are there in Washington, District of Columbia ?
Dc & md my home ❤️
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video
@@ThatIsInterestingTII Loved it as always. Keep up the great work man!
Washingtonian here. Dc is the only city you can be in and don’t know you in it. Unlike other cities, you can tell you entering a city because big buildings…. Dc you just get a welcome to dc sign. Very unique city.
So if you get a welcome to DC sign doesn’t that tell you u are in DC according to your words 🤦🏽♂️
I think what you mean is the city can do more to let you know you are in the actual city of Washington DC
Love this series! Has even made me want to visit the US again (as a Canadian, that's saying something lol)
People get DC flag tattooed too. (lol me included)
Statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Let’s add two more stars to the United States flag! (Estadidad para el Distrito de Columbia y Puerto Rico. Añadámos dos estrellas más a la bandera de Estados Unidos!)
Never ever.
Baltimore and Washington DC are brother metro cities in Maryland
DC is a federal district/city and the capital of the United States of America we are not a part of any city or state
@@washingtondc9290 Washington and Baltimore have a sister city called "Annapolis" the capital of Maryland
@@washingtondc9290 Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are brother metro cities in Pennsylvania
They’re more than that, they are the same metro area but for some reason they are always separated. Even though they are the same distance as other cities like Dallas-Fort Worth or Miami-Fort Lauderdale.
@@JhonnyBoi Let me explain Washington DC has a Metro bus and train and it goes through Montgomery & Prince Georges county in Maryland and northern Virginia which is the DC metro area you cannot catch a Metro bus or train in Washington DC and take it to Baltimore you will need to take the Marc train which goes through majority of the top cities in the US DC & baltimore are not in the same metro area
How are you and your team making these so fast!?
I think Carter is done with school.
***watches in Ward 7*** .
An interesting take
Great work
Great video.
Just a small correction but Washington is an area in the city of Sunderland not Newcastle, interestingly americans named their cities after towns here, and we named towns here after American places, there is a town called Philadelphia near Washington uk
The last time I was in Washington D.C. I was a kid and Bill Clinton was president. I should visit again sometime.
It now has over 700,000 residents
We are still in the 600,000s and actually due to crime we’ve lost over 40,000 residents from 2020 to 2021
@@washingtondc9290 In 2022, the population went back up and is estimated to be even higher for 2023.

DC? Love it, Superman, Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Justice Society, the Teen Titans, some of the greatest stories ever to-....huh?...what's that?...oh the CITY!
eh, it's aight.
I was hoping DC would be selected as one of the host cities for the 2026 world cup but alas it was not meant to be.
Yay, I live in DC Metro
But those 700k don’t feel like they are part of Maryland, why force people be part of a state they don’t belong
@@MAmet-bc3zz then they are idiots. PG county and Montgomery county share most similarities with DC
Or just give them their rights?
Maryland doesn’t want DC, and DC doesn’t want to be part of Maryland. Just give the citizens of DC representation in congress. It is the right of all Americans.
Did you mention former DC Mayor Marion Barry?
😂
That bitch set me up.
Here in Venezuela we have 23 states and a federal district where Caracas (the capital) recites
The history of Georgetown is interesting too
Unpopular opinion but I think Washington should abolish the 130 feet tall building height limit. If residential buildings could be taller it could help eliminate gentrification in black neighborhoods and give Washington a downtown core. If statehood becomes a thing the city will need a memorable downtown outside the federal district so people don’t confuse the two.
Thats what Arlington is for lmao
