Hey mate, it means the world to me that you took the time out of your day to do a video on Dead Monarchy and show it off to the world. You sum up the game that I've been working on for 6 years, perfectly. Yeah there is jank, it's kind of inevitable when you only have 1 developer working on it but if you can look past it, there is an unprecedented amount of depth when it comes to the combat which is where the meat of the game is, as after all, it is a strategy game. I'd just like to mention two things: - There is an option (Quick Interactions) to bypass a lot of the loading screens in the havens and to quickly access the majority of the facilities without loading into an interior. - Your longsword/arbalest not doing any damage, that seems to be a bug I have to look into. His stats didn't seem to initialise properly, started with 0/26 damage and break. Thanks again for all you've done for the indie community!
It may be ugly but it looks fun and interesting and for $9.99 I think I'll get my moneys worth easily. Thanks Splat for another obscure find that will have me opening my wallet next month. I'll be adding to a library I have no hope of ever finishing thanks in large part to this channel...
@@TrueRandomization Black Adder was a British comedy series starting Mr. Bean in various historical settings as a would-be villain that keeps failing upwards, it's fantastic
I've been following this game for years now its amazing to see how much the dev achieved solo. I do agree that the loading screens and the UI is pretty ugly and the graphics are outdated but besides wartales, mount and blade and battle brothers i don't know any games that has this much content in it especially for a game made by a solo dev.
With the loading screens, you can skip most of them if you enable "Quick Interactions", that will speed up haven interaction. There really is a wealth of content to discover in Dead Monarchy if you can look past the jank, I won't deny it, it's janky for sure. There will also be more post-game content on the way, all the post-release content I am planning to do will be free.
@@deadmonarchystudios6485 I'll be extremely hyped for that, thanks for the amazing job. Not sure how easily moddable the game is but maybe the community can surprise us while you developt the game and the expansions.
This actually looks like good fun. Yeah it's basic but everything that's there is the fun stuff, all the stuff that matters. Straight away I would rather play this than the highly frustrating Battle brothers. It's only £7.19. I'll take it.
@@deadmonarchystudios6485 The combat pretty much. At some point Wartales just got too bland. I'm a long time BB player(I have over 2k hours in it) and was hyped for that game, thinking it would be a BB with legs but the combat, character customization/development were too shallow and the encounters too "samey" thus getting old very quickly. Didn't even come close to BB - maybe that's also why I was so disappointed with it because I set the expectations too high.
@@marcusfenix4769 Interested to hear that Marcus. I've got well over 1000 hours in BB too and 100 percent-ed it. I've looked at Wartales a bunch of times but something just seemed off and I never pulled the trigger and bought it. You may have articulated the reasons why...
Looks nice, don't sure wanna play right now, maybe later 😜. Game needs some polishing and maybe more friendly ui and smoother amimations. If it was released like 10 years ago it might be my favourite alongside with brigade e5 new alliance, which is hard to enter but challenging.
i think accidentally jumping into combat first rather than a praise for its depth in character development was a good thing maybe something to have in mind when editing a similar rough around the edges indie game kept me hooked with something more engaging as a youtube viewer, streaming might be a different situation
Matt, I thought I saw you breaking down looted weapons and armors into base materials, in Dead Monarchy, but I could be wrong! If you were actually doing that, I wanted to ask how? I can't find it anywhere! I don't even use Hotkeys yet, it's all point and click so far! #TIA
I've honestly seen way worse taken with way more regard. The overworld animations look good. The town zoom in is a nice touch and the individual building scenes outside and inside are also quite good. It looks like some version of Unreal engine, but it is way cleaner than lots of stuff I've seen done with it. The inventory and stat images do look pretty utilitarian and the skill images are so samey they might be better off with just an image for the skill type (i.e. prowess) and then text for the individual skills. It would be nice to see actual parries and shield blocks in combat. At this point you get an enemy swing and then later the defender's shield moves. Interacting models would be pretty neat. Different animations for different skills and passives would be a great sell. It also really, really, really needs a combat log. The spam that flashes past over a model's head on strike can't really be read. I know this is apparently the last version, but I think it could really take off with some combat tweaks. If you have, say, up to three mercs you get to set some basic behaviors for them (stay close, try to flank, hang back, etc.) and do realitime combat like mount and blade. If you have, say, between 3 and 9 you can set up teams of 2 to 4, each with a chosen man/corporal, and give each an objective (take out this target, hold this area, stay near this group, etc.) and some behaviors (be careful, retreat if pressed, at all costs, etc.). You move from realtime to pushpause every N seconds, during which you can "shout" updates. You could scale this until it becomes almost an RTS.
Not every turn based game needs to be turned into a real time game. Some people actually enjoy taking their time to plan every move. This game is obviously designed for a niche genre sort of player. Let them have it.
The GUI gore is strong with this one... Dev, for crying out loud, find a friend with a bit of flair for graphic design! Then, find a second friend with writing skills...
The GUI is pretty ugly but that is easily fixable or moddable for me. i do find it funny that all your solutions are just "Find a friend to do it" the was made solo for a reason prob
Battle Brothers was one of the main inspirations. Dead Monarchy also gets compared to Wartales a lot. Not that it matters much at this point but Dead Monarchy entered into EA years before Wartales was even a thing. I'll go ahead and say it, overall both games are quite clearly superior products, but they are also x3 the price, so the price reflects the quality and the amount of "jank" you'll expect I suppose. That said, the combat in Dead Monarchy is very deep, deep enough for it to stand on its own. Combat after all is the primary driving force behind games like this. So if you can look past the jank, and spend $10 or like $6 when it's on sale, I think you'll get a lot of content for the price you pay.
i really hope this game is successful enough to be worth a overhaul from the developer and receive great deal of expansion i really like the idea of the game but its a little to rough of a gem for me
So I went into all of this knowing I might not ever make a hit title. The games that ultimately interest me are super niche. The only way I could realistically sustain development was solo development. I will continue to release new games and iterate upon them and eventually they will be combined into the "ultimate" version. Dead Monarchy might be too rough for you now but perhaps in the future you'll take interest. Either way, I will continue to work on my games regardless.
I don't plan to add any magic in this game specifically. However I plan to release standalone games/expansions, that will continue to expand upon the combat and eventually they will culminate into the "ultimate game" in which I will then just continue to work on until I'm dead. So eventually, I will add magic in but I am not sure when that will be, it will be something I have to seriously sit down and ponder about.
