      @@BlindiRL I started messing with DF around 2008 but haven't played it for the past 6 or 7 years. The steam release plus running into your UA-cam videos have got me back into it hard. Truly one of the greatest games of all time! It's wild to see how many things have been implemented, and how many more things there are left to go. I've been anticipating the magic system for ages. Also it really shows the complexity of the personality of the dwarf fortress npcs.

    This fort gives me an idea. Have you ever tried building a fort out in the ocean, or large body of water that's essentially a fleet of ships or central ship that's like a floating castle on the water, like a giant stone-ship, surrounded by a fleet of smaller ships? It might be a neat project to try. You could wait till winter when the water freezes to build them and they could be constructed on pillars that go down to the ocean floor. Yeah... they wouldn't be real sailing vessels, but you could make them look that way just for the aesthetic. You could build underwater passageways so that the dwarves could get from one boat to another too. My head is getting filled with ideas.

    To answer your question about aquifers, I'm in the "I DESPISE THEM!" camp. I almost always manually remove them from world gen. While I know how to deal with them, I just find that they get in the way of my fun. I'm too impatient to deal with them and want to really get started on the meat of what I want to accomplish. Usually, for my wells, I either divert a river into the fort, or I build a well that gets it water from a flooded part of the cavern layer.

    Dwarf Fortress' emergent storytelling is beyond anything I've seen in other games. Truly the old law of the genre.

    This is your best video. Old law. The extra editing effort really shows and the story telling really works. I hope you'll make more videos like this!!! I finally realized I wasn't subscribed and subbed.

    the concept of the old law is actually an amazing example of how you can make your own fun from interpreting the procedurally-generated lore

    Makes me wonder, is it possible to make a perfectly happy fortress if you checked on every dwarf every month. Especially with the merging of zones.
    The micromanaging would be insane and slow going, but would it be an efficient fortress? Or just some pleasure cult where everyone is happy but works really slowly?

    • @joshuawiener5003
      @joshuawiener5003 Місяць тому +2

      If you can manage to make every dwarf ultra happy by meeting every single one of their needs at all time and never have a single dwarf with an unmet need, then the game will have a pop-up telling you that you have won Dwarf Fortress.

    This is very nice experiment to understand a dwarf psyche. Even if I think Old Laws are stupid, seeing how he was developing is something magic.

    the emergent story telling that the backgrounds create is insane, one time i found a doctor that destroyed a dwarf bone item upon entering the map . it turns out it was made from a long time female friend, by his old friend who became a necromancer. He had married the girl as well . that necromancer ever since that never had a stable relationship again and wandered around the world.
