- I've been an on-and-off collector for almost 12 years. Last week, I decided to quit. I sold 50 or so toys to a group buy.

The biggest mistake toy collectors make, and the reason why they stop is because they end up not collecting for the right reasons. For example they’ll buy it because it’s new. Not because the figure means something to them. Or they’ll buy it for UA-cam views to be the first one or one of the first to put the video up. Collecting should always be a very picky thing. It’s what keeps me collecting personally. Ive been collecting for almost 10 years now. And my collection of figures is so small compared to people who’ve collected less years than me. That’s a problem. You have to make sure every figure you buy personally means something to you and to make sure it’s the best version of a particular character that you can afford. Just my 2 cents.
Trust me, that's how I collect. I don't get things because they're new or because I want to be first. If you notice, I usually just have 1 of everything and if I did have duplicates, it's because they were of significant emotional value to me, like Hawkeye. The only character I had multiple figures of was Daredevil and that's because I'm a fan of the character in the comics - DD is my absolute number 1 favorite character.
I agree with souldrum86. If you're collection is like Bim, i probably not gonna enjoy it. It's becomes stressful to watch when you're collection is very stagnant in a display.
It makes me sad when UA-cam collector can't even remember the names of the characters they have figures of. Collect the toys based on the things you love, it's as simple as that.
I agree with the idea of a figure being important to you. When i look at figures online or in stores i wish i could buy a lot but at the same time i want the perfect one.

Been collecting for 20, 30 years thought of them as assets then the last couple years I started just enjoying not caring about the value some of this is cause I'm old I guess now when I buy it's like I'll be dead before it's worth anything so it's just for me

I've come to a point in my life where collecting isn't as important. In just the last five years I've lost 2 of my best friends, my dog, and my uncle. I used to look at my collection with awe and happiness. Now all I see is stuff. Plastic that costs money and uses up space and when I die it won't come with me. What matters is our family and friends, our pets, the memories we create. Not the inanimate objects on my shelf. Sometimes I wish I'd use that money on important things like a car or travel and see the world. Idk. That's how I'm feeling right now. It's also overwhelming at this point because just when you think the collection is close to completion, companies keep announcing and releasing new figures or new versions. It's never ending.

It's because you're unhappy at the moment I suspect. When you get your mojo back you'll start to appreciate the toys again. Could be wrong but when I'm feeling down, I look at my collection and think whats the point? But when I come through the other side I walk into my toyroom and think OH yeah!
@@ohcrikey9560 you're absolutely right. Some time has passed since I wrote the comment and I feel better now. I just purchased two new toys this week and it felt nice. Sometimes life just happens and we get carried away. I'm way more picky about what I buy though. No more buying figures just for completion. Only if I see myself enjoying them.
I gave up my figurine collection before, but let me tell you this before you make the same mistake I did: You will miss them. It’s the ones that hold that emotional/sentimental value that you will miss the most. I started to buy the ones I had before and this time I have a deeper appreciation for them and realize those figures have value. They have value to me, they give me some sense of comfort, and that’s okay. I don’t want to be a collector, somebody who just keeps buying toys, but I do want to be a person who keeps their items of value. I will never make that mistake again, it was a harsh reality to live with that I would give up something I treasured as a child just because I grew up into an “adult”. The inner child’s voice was loud and said to cherish it, we only live once and it’s okay to comfort the inner child’s needs. Just don’t go overboard for sure, find a safe place and remember to not try and buy everything, just buy/keep the ones that bring joy to your soul. :)
Edit: I liked your video btw, I think people can be so harsh with their comments sometimes, don’t worry though, deep down only you know if you did the right thing or not, other people can’t tell you how to feel. :)
I've been collecting toys since the mid 90's when I was in high school and let me just say for the record...none of my toys will ever be sold I don't care how much they are worth. Money is just something that comes and goes but my collection is mine and means more than numbers printed on a piece of paper...

I don't mean to be! Sorry! I just figured you know, eventually even good things must come to an end. But that end need not be sad. Sometimes with the things you have now, they'll become good memories, and sometimes that's all they need to be.

@@BimBurger Not everything ends in your lifetime. I'm never giving my things away. I found a different way to display and use them. You've just gotta think outside the box. You must remember, no one is the same. Some collections end for some collectors and for others they end once the person is dead. You can't tell people that they're collection will come to an end one day when you don't actually know that.
Your reason for not collecting is so on point. I been collecting Funko Pops for 2 years and it had grown into a HORRIBLE stressful hobby. I have a friend who obsesses over buying them and seeing him made me realize that the collecting was no longer fun and required ALOT more work than I am willing to waste my life on. I wound up selling off 1/2 my collection and although I do still receive some as gifts that I appreciate...I have stopped worrying about "rare" ones that are basically unattainable because of the market. Everything needs balance and when its not longer fun ...it's good to give it up.
After a while, it just gets tiring, doesn't it? It's hard for human beings to not want the rarest and best. I'm glad you're much happier just enjoying the hobby.

Just caught this video, it take a real man to make such a hard decision and to stick with it. I don't know you but I'm proud of you. Most people can't surpass themselves, you seem to have and with that type of determination you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

True. But my wife understands why I sold it. We hold on to the memories. I carry in my wallet the card attached the Hawkeye gift and the sentiment remains. Just no figure.
Oh, but a new classic Hawkeye was just announced! It looks pretty good.
It's the thought that counts. Well, wife is the greatest gift a husband should receive. Its like a wedding ring. It's just a ring but to be with your wife is while lot different. A non living thing is like a photo, to intrigue memory. Same like things. To represent and to trigger a good or bad memory.

Girl the toy doesn’t mean anything, the wife does. My bf has given me dolls but then I wanted to quit collecting, he was more than happy by me selling them. They’re just gifts. Just cuz someone u care about gives u something doesn’t mean u have to keep it

I think collecting is mostly an obsession? . It is very difficult to find the right balance. How many of us are willing to admit that deep down we can let go of 30% or 50% or more of our collection? and that at the end of the day there would be no major issue with that. If we lived under the premise that we should only keep the figures that we really really want, everything would be easier.
We would live less obsessed and we could enjoy this hobby more.

Totally agree. Collecting can be a good thing if balanced properly. Right now, I just the figures that I really love, and I don't obsess about completing a team or a lineup or anything like that. It's quite liberating.
I stopped for much the same reasons.It becomes an addiction,you want something so bad,get it then move on to the next target.Too much was never enough and It never ends.I remember deciding to stop at 50 when i went into a new relationship.Great memories of collecting though.

We all want things but we don’t need them. I’m (was) a doll collector. Ive been trying to quit for a long time but I keep relapsing and buying them. Ive had probably over 1000 dolls in my hands the last 11 years. They have come and gone, bought for a lot and sold for cheap. Yea I miss them when I sell them but then I forget about them. We just think we need to collect something but we dont. I’m living a minimalistic life now and I don’t need to collect
I did buy the figures I wanted but not to the same extent. Now I can count the figures I own with my fingers, just enough to display. Next up, Storm Collectibles' King from Tekken.
@@BimBurger figures are a dying off these days the new young generation are not interested in figures like we were as kids they all want online gaming, all the figures i had as a kid are over priced these days and i wouldn't get rid of my collectables for anyone, i dont care if other people think and say why have you got a glass cabinet full of old toys and think its stupid until i explain how how expensive they all are and its an investment. No woman tells me what to do jusy because she doesn't understand it. Try and replace all the collectables you sold and see how much it would cost you to get your entire collection back these days.
It is very likely that if that happens, you would only miss a minimum percentage of them .

I still collect toys but there comes a point where you either have to stop or cut back significantly because of space for me now I'm only going to get the occasional star wars figure I started out collecting star wars figures but it eventually spiraled into collecting everything and became overwhelming

Scalpers ruin collecting for us .Also just collect what you love don't buy it just to buy it .
Yeah scalpers suck. Even with gaming, scalpers buy up all the stock - it sucks :(
I know this is an older video and you may not see this but I recently went through my toys and found that almost 60% of them were basically just dead weight that I didn't enjoy messing with anymore, I've always been picky with my collecting anyway because I've had to be for money reasons but after 7 years now it's time for a purge of the collection, and I'm happy with what I've kept, however I don't feel like I wasted my time with the toys I'm selling off, at some point they were toys I really really wanted and put alot of thought into but sometimes expectations are too high or my interests just shift naturally, so for me my collection is a constantly shifting thing and I always try and keep in mind what I'm enjoying and what I'm not, that's how I kind of handle it, I know when enough is enough
It was hard to let go at first, no? Then just felt liberating after a while, I bet.
I'm now going through this stage where I felt tech and toys that are more 'functional' appeals to me.. I hate it when a non living thing gets me in my emotions when rationally, it should be turned into savings or gadgets that serve instead of just seating there looking pretty for your eyes and mind. A completely reasonable and understandable step for further growth, good Sir! And I say this as an action figure collector. It is quite sad that you reached the point of quitting, as I feel like I can't ever let my collection go and just stop collecting entirely when I try to relate to your situation. But you brought up good points, and I guess I'm still too deep in the inertia of collecting figures for their sheer awesomeness to truly relate and truth be told, I don't know if I'll ever stop. Anyways, I wish you good luck and godspeed to whatever catches your fancy next!
I think when your priorities shift, you'll eventually be okay with letting your collection go. If they don't shift, then great. :) We all just have to find what makes us happy.
I don't really quit toy collecting but I transitioned from collecting action figures to electronic toys because it gives me more interaction than action figures could. That's why I understand why you see them as an asset because it just poses in the display area and if I or someone else want to play with it, I worry that doing so might develop scratches or devalue the figure, especially with still figures or absurdly expensive articulated figures then there's the PVC deterioration within years thing, sunlight diminishing the colours etc. That's why I recently sold them and the money I got back is used for those electronic toys.

Damn straight brother!! Since 94! I started when I ended up getting duplicate toybiz X-men for my 11th birthday and slowly built up since. I also have 4 kids who love my collection and will also be getting their share when I pass em down. All about balance.

@@capking7444 I still don't. I'm still very happy for my decision. I've been much healthier with my collection now. I just have display pieces. I still have a few MLs, but mostly just for display.
Collecting is almost greedy, and obsessive yes....which to me has wondered me on what evil it is haha
This video rings true on a lot of levels we do not realise it but collecting is akin to hoarding. Infact if you look at the habits and characteristics of hoarders there are only two or three extra traits they have over collectors.
My thing is, if I have anything in storage it means it must not mean that much to me or it would be on display so... Sold is its destination.
Collectors obsessed with convention exclusives only to realise the figure gets a mass release a few months later.

I think you should just collect a few items you care about and let the rest go. Less is more in this game, unless you have a passion for toy photography.
Even my friend who is into toy photography often borrowed figures from me or his other friends.
My collecting timeline started 11 years ago
The first two years was genuine and passionate and then I started getting Hyped up making impulse buys a few more years later I stopped collecting sold off some of the collections you will see on my videos the end of 2019 I started back collecting without the impulse buys I realized my passion is heman Ninja Turtles WWF Hasbro/retros
Within the next two years I will only have those three collections left I don't do reviews I just show the stuff that I love excellent content all of your issues was clearly defined and it made sense

Dude, I understand. We all have reasons to quit a hobby. I still enjoy toy collecting but there's some toylines I stopped collecting.
The problem with collecting newly released stuff is that you have to keep up. The company producing the item literally sets the pace for your collecting life. If they release four waves a year, you're hunting for those four waves. If each wave has a rare or variant, you will spend your life in your various Walmarts, Targets, and specialty stores looking for those items. Your life becomes about driving around, trying to be at the store right when it opens, fighting with scalpers, waiting for the store employee to check in the back, buying whole cases just to get that one chase figure.
It's no longer about enjoying your collection anymore. It becomes stress.
Do yourself a favor: collect something that's no longer on the shelves. You'll find collecting to be way more enjoyable because the entire line has already been produced. It's no longer about clicking that refresh button for the latest images from the Toy Fair or searching toy forums to find out when the new toys are going to hit shelves or worse yet, finding out that it hit shelves a week ago and you're now behind the 8 ball. You no longer have to drive the circuit between all the local stores, running out empty handed so you can hurry to the next store, fighting traffic, being frustrated.
It just becomes about your collection, buying what you like, setting goals, looking for the best deals. You're not stuck in that moment of having to buy it right now and chase after the latest thing. It's my belief that what both made toy collecting exciting and at the same time ruined it is the chase figure, the rare items.

I’m a toy collector but I collect a lot less than average and I collect Nature themed toys that are often sustainable and fair trade. Oh I’m also a furry! I make sure that my toy collecting doesn’t become an addiction by being mindful of its impact on the planet!

I think when we collect, we should try not to be guided by our ego. Being the first to own one. Paying a fortune for something that is rare just because few other people have it. I just buy what I love. I'm not a completist. I don't need to own a whole series. Thats the road to madness.

Bro treated the figures like crack! Addicting yes, but fun and nostalgic to keep the memories alive as you had when you were young. I could never be as brave as this guy. I hope he is well today
I'm good lol. I sort of started collecting again, but this time I'm not treating it like crack. I just get figures that I really fall in love with, and I've diversified my stuff - ML, Nendo, and some pops here and there.

Mike fancy seeing you here, just got to the point where I’m saying enough is enough I probably have like half of your displayed collection and only a quarter of it actually displayed properly… will never sell my collection, but I am going to stop buying stuff I don’t have a connection with. Collectors like you on UA-cam really inspire me and bring joy when I think of action figures, but every now and then I see how many I have and it makes me sick to my stomach lol I want to go back to when I had under 100 figures and tell myself to stop there haha. I associate spending hundreds of dollars on inanimate objects with a mental disorder. I used to do it. I gave away thousands in exchange for plastic rubber dolls from an Asian company called Hot Toys. Until one day I figured out the toys had no residual value. It’s one thing to say an object is worth a certain dollar amount. It’s another for what people are actually willing to pay for it. So now I’m out a lot of money and stuck with an assortment of toy dolls no one wants to buy.
Now that I want to buy something useful like musical instruments to play. I’m stuck paying off the debt for these worthless toys that serve no purpose.
Do yourself a favor save your money for a rainy day and to purchase things that you can put to good use. That serve a practical purpose.
Well hobbies aren't meant to be practical. Otherwise, we'd all be into saving money to put towards retirement.

I'm well, I'm well. I have a small collection of 6 figures now + statue or two. I'm happy with what I have and don't feel the need to buy more or the latest stuff, which feels quite liberating.

I’ve been a collector for 20 years.…so many have jumped on the wagon in the past few years and driven prices through the roof…I think the whole culture is heading for burnout….all fads come to an end
I sold my whole collection back when I was in college bc I had no choice. I needed the money badly. Started collecting again mid 2000’s and I’ve never been one to just buy. I don’t collect a whole series just bc. I’ve always only purchased figures that I want and liked not just to have so I don’t look at my collection and wonder why I have this or that.
I've been collecting on and off since 2008 when I use to work at a Target that connected to a mall. I remember I would go toy hunting on my lunch break, What I couldn't find at Target I would go to Kaybee Toy Store to find it. When my grandmother passed away 2021 and the few years before her passing I started selling off my collections brick by brick. In 2017 I sold off my Funko pop/ Kidrobot collection after a bad break up I didn't want to be reminded of this person that was once in my life. I recently sold off my silver coin, jewelry collection, vintage video game/systems, comics, and trading cards due to bad times to pay my monthly bills. It funny when you clear up space in room , dressers, and closet there is always someone else trying to fill it up with their stuff. I'm trying to buy less and save more money. I like the whole idea of minimalism but not to the extreme where I have nothing, but to enjoy the things I already have for a longer period of time.
Man, I don’t ever want to get sucked into collecting ever again. My friend has a continuous obsession for toys and his house is 90% filled up with toys and looks so crowded and uncomfortble, i suspect he became a hoarder… hes also married… and childless…doesnt want kids because hes afraid they would come after his toys lol… i dropped the friendship hes all toxic

Which one? The one from Series 5? That's a nice one - very poseable. I had a ton of Iron Man figures. Had all the movies ones, too. My favorite one used to be the Mark VII, still is actually.
You don't need to quit, you need to know your limitations. I started recently but I'm picky what i want i don't buy cause it's cool, i just collect from what I experienced in my childhood.
I never collected because it was cool. I mean we're grown men talking about toys here. A buying decision for me was never based on hype or market speculation. In fact, I hated it when a character I loved was deemed "valuable" by the community because that meant I'd have a harder time finding them.
Before I collected toys, I collected comic books. These characters are from my childhood. But like comics, I found that my spending habits on what is essentially useless plastic, was getting excessive so I stopped.
That's the key... moderation.
You should have at least kept the ones that had sentimental value, but it's your decision. As long as you are happy then that's all that matters :)

I can relate to this man. I began collecting Mcfarlane DC figures last year. First was Murder Machine and I was quite pleased by it. He's my favorite character. Then decided to complete his team for photography. The journey of completing them is costly and stressful. You have people who hoard and overprice, then there are problems with the distribution. Then I began buying toys even I don't have connection with them because I thought they will be gone or overpriced tomorrow. Collecting became a dick measuring contest. The hobby is capricious, and their value looses in a snap of a finger. I regret doing this. I should have used my money on more purposeful things.
I'm quite sad that your experience was quite negative. Toys are supposed to be fun, but I definitely agree with your sentiments. A lot of what you said doesn't really get said enough. It's a hobby that requires a lot of commitment.
For me, I simply have extremely strong buyers remorse. All my bills are payed for and I save more than half my paychecks with no debts, and I could still buy several game system worth of stuff. Yet even trying to buy a neca, marvel legends or select still really eats me up. I once bought an SH Monsterarts 95 Godzilla and SH Figuarts Ultraman Orb origin saga on black Friday. My guilt was so strong I returned them the next day.
Great message I’ve definitely been there .I’ve only been collecting 6 yrs. I’ve sold a good portion of my figures to only buy the ones I really missed back . What I don’t do anymore is buy every release of my favorite lines and just cherry pick the ones that appeal to me to the most . Sometimes I do feel guilt of spending money on figures so I made myself a strict budget . If I I need to go out of my budget I will sell a figure to come up with the extra cash even though I have money in the bank. Keeping it at a medium in this hobby is difficult but rewarding at the same time . Space is easier to manage as well. At least you kept some favorites 👍🏼

I agree, for me its very stressful, im torn between collecting games or toys, i can't afford both , i don't need both, im really happy collecting retro games, mostly snes & sega megadrive games , there cheap to get and i dont have to worry about weather its on the shelf or not, plus toy collecting is dead, its been dead fir years now?
Great video its good to hear from people in a similar situation, did you consider going through your collection and keeping only the ones that really made you happy like the ones from your sister and wife?
I collect videogames and have found it causes me as much (if not more) pain as it does pleasure.
I have been considering quitting but I find selling all of it is being extreme just like wanting to own it all is too.
I felt like getting rid of my toys should be like dealing with a breakup or a removing a band aid - remove it quick and painless. If I kept a couple pieces, they'd just draw me back into collecting. I'd rather just remove it all.
If you wanna quit, go cold turkey. I mean - that's how i quit smoking, too.

Yeah, I’ve been pulling back because it’s not as fun and my place was cramming stuff in. Problem is it was no financial burden, luckily, but I just ended up giving stuff away to my friends. Now, I try to think of the happiness value more than the monetary value.

Bim Barbieto Understood your reasoning. But to quit totally is not wise. As a fellow toy collector, I have space issue instead of money problems. I would like to buy everything but I learned how to control my impulse with the limited display space I have. You really dont have to buy and keep everything. You can opt to sell old ones and replace them with new ones from time to time. It will keep your collection and display interesting. If you really need the money for living/surviving purpose, then dont spend them on toys collection. Wait until you are financially capable.
Not a stupid idea on Bim's perspective. I mean, I guess what you're actually feeling is regret as you placed yourself on his shoes, and what you felt is based on your current situation. His situation is different. TBH, though, I think most collectors get a feeling of burning out, if not on collecting as a whole, then at least on the line one collects. Personally, I get burned out sometimes, and I found that changing lines (even temporarily) reignites my passion for at least collecting in general.
It's not to say that he may not feel some sort of regret in selling some of the items down the line. I regret selling off my Yamato Macross valks, and I wish I kept at least one Roy Fokker figure. But that's the way it is and if he thinks that his current situation calls for selling everything, then perhaps that's the way it should be.
Hey Raul, thanks for seeing my side of things. I actually do regret selling off my favorite Daredevil figure, but I think that if I held onto it, I wouldn't have stopped buying. It's like a gateway lol.
This is true, the moment you get rid of a lot of things in a collection, your desire to continue stops in that specific market because you already gave up a lot of it. happened to me when i was collecting wrestling figures. I sold all of them except my 4 favorite ones and I no longer have the desire to get more.
I haven't sold my toys ever since I started collecting 1/6 figures.. it all means something for me, I even built the fig myself (kitbashing) so it held a sentimental value to me..
but I feel you. who can resist the urge of something shiny? why we buy shiny things because the feeling of letting your crave go is very satisfying.. and the cycle repeats itself until you didn't see the point anymore... which is why you sold the figures in the first place.

Yeah I get that. Nostalgia is certainly a factor. I've been rethinking of re-purchasing Daredevil figures, but I eventually shake myself out of it. I guess I'm not super over it yet.

Great Video by the way and great topic. Man I feel ya, I'm constantly juggling my money with what toys I need next and it doesn't help when companies mess you about (HASBRO) I'm looking at u. The Star Wars 40th Anniversary figures have been the bane of my life for the past 5 months. When they came out and for the pre-orders I just didn't have enough cash for them, well I thought this won't be too much of a problem I will just have to buy on Ebay, then the problems began. First of all the prices were high, more than double so I started saving, then suddenly some companies and some is the key word here started offering pre-orders again, so I waited like 3 months and now today it looks like they are going to be cancelled. This is the sort of stuff that just takes the fun out Toy collecting when demand tottaly out strips supply. Rant over.
Sorry I didn't see this comment earlier. I guess I must have but forgot to reply. Anyway, I totally feel you, man. Hasbro's been pumping out wave after wave lately and they've been some good looking figures in those waves. Kinda wanna get me a Deadpool. In the next wave, a set comes with 2 Deadpools so there shouldn't be too much of a shortage.
I only collect certain figures I like and I don't regret it. I'm not gonna collect everything only the one's that I'm into.

It's always Sad news to witness a collector sell his stuff, although I might not sell those who were given to me as a gift. Because it makes the figure more special, someone thought of you and decided that particular item might be of your likeness.

I stopped buying for a long time. Got the itch again and bought a few figures. I have just Marvel Knights, a few Nendoroids, and a Funko Pop or two. It's a much leaner collection now. Wouldn't even call it that. I only get what I have room to display.

I've been collecting for about 6 years now and have around 3000$ worth in collectables and I'm Completely turned off by the Outrageous and Absurd prices the Toy Companies are selling thier Merchandise at. I'm basically tired of getting taken advantage of.

I've cut down in collecting action figures i used to collect wwe elite, marvel legends, star war black series, transformers, mcfarlane sports figures. It was really getting out of hand, now I focus on black series and gi joe classified series. I no longer collect the other lines. I've sold a big amount of my collection and I'm thinking to sell more. Great video 👍👍👍
I have been collecting since the time of Toy Biz and DC Direct. But as time went on my fandom died down and my spending habits changed. As of now I might have at least 100 figures from Marvel Legends, Mattel's DC Universe and various NECA figures. I was planning to sell my stuff but had a hard time selling them one by one in forums and online buy and sell sites. I feel you bro, but for me it was video game collecting. I stopped last year and didn't go back to collecting video games since. I still play tho, through steam using only my gaming laptop, and since then I didn't have to a store looking for a video game. It's stress free and steam sales are ridiculously cheap than buying a physical copy on a console. Much like you, I kept some of my favorite games just for nostalgia sake, but majority of it was sold. It was hard at first but I learned to let go.
Collecting video games almost became an obsession for me, as well. Thankfully, it was just way too expensive to keep up lol. :D
My trick is not buying a new game till completely I beat the Last one I bought.
I got into the hobby as an escape of a bad relationship. Since I finally got out of that relationship met a new girl who treats me right and feel like I don't need this stuff anymore. I collected hot toys and statues. Im selling off a 1/3 of my collection and have already stopped PO new stuff.
Hot Toys can be hella expensive, too. But my wife did say that if I started collecting again, she'd only support me if I bought Hot Toys and statues just because she thinks they're more worth it because they're so pretty.

Then sometimes you ask yourself do I like the particular toy or version or sculpt. Because it just sounds like you bought too many of these goddamned things.Once you realized which ones you really care about you'll let a bunch of these pieces of shit go out the window. Later.
I swear to you, sir, I am not going through depression. To say so would be a disservice to those who are actually going through it. I didn't hoard as much either. I sold off stuff I didn't have space for or just didn't think fit my main display. I still wanna get a few figures close to my heart, though, but maybe when the time is right.
I get what you mean. It's not easy to detach yourself from your hobby and investment. You can't help but see your collection as an asset that grows over time. But you also are running out of space and don't want to participate in this rat race anymore. Right now, I have collected a couple of anime figures (like 15 or so) over 4 years and I also think that I will stop collecting them someday. I already only rarely buy new ones because it's not such a high priority for me. I know that I will stop collecting someday and sell everything except maybe one, a favorite, as a memento to look back at the joy of collecting.
Everyone has their weakness and I think some people probably should stay out of figure collecting since it can become a destructive habit of hoarding things they don't need with money they don't have. I know for me, it's video games. I, either play as much as possible or not at all. Like it's easier to totally abstain from playing any game than trying to play “in moderation” because I lose too much self-control when it comes to games. When I was younger, my parents let me play for hours on end, which clearly was a mistake. Now, I have an unhealthy relationship with good (addictive) games. It's low-key like alcohol to alcoholics, that's why I stay away from it...

TOY COLLECTING is a part of our family. My Husband is already collecting 25yrs already.. While me, after watching Voltes V is in 9yrs, our three kids ages 8yrs old, 6yrs old, 3yrs Collect Voltes V through their savings since 2019. They don't play it. Because they knew the price and importance. All our Toys are in display cabinet, with box intact..... later on, you will be SORRY because You suppress yourself from doing your Passion! Quitting is not the Answer! If your wife or Partner loves you, he/she should understand and Join you in your Passion. Everyone of us have the little child inside.

Assets or liabilities? Sold my collection to buy a new desktop PC which I desperately needed.
The toys I collected and the way I collected them (opening and playing with them) made them lose value, so they were liabilities for me.
The best thing to do when you decide to part with your collection:
1. Take the money and buy something you ABSOLUTELY need - a car, a new roof for house, college education money for your children, or outright invest it.
2. Another thing is, as you say -PUT THE MONEY DOWN ON ANY DEBT you have - i.e. Use it to pay your house off, use it to pay your car off. All my old toys from my childhood that I didn't REALLY want anymore..I sold and they helped pay my house OFF and freed me from mortgage slavery. There's an old saying - Take care of your toys...and someday...they will TAKE CARE OF YOU.
Bottom line - DO something GOOD and financially meaningful with the money you get from your collection and you will never feel that bad later on. You will feel bad later...but you won't feel AS bad knowing you did something good with your money. Warning to all those reading: Once a collector...always a collector.
My issue is collecting mostly large 1/4+ statues these days lol. I love em but I need to start selling some eventually to make space and build some more savings. I'll probably do a youtube dedicated to just statues and make sure to film them all eventually - definitely not missing any being sold
I don’t know if this counts, but I’m just guy who wants them Spider-Man Hot Toys figures. Because Spider-Man means a lot to me, and these figures mean a lot to me too. I also am very picky, so I didn’t buy the spider punk and don’t plan on getting the iron spider suit from the PS4 video game. I guess it’s really not collecting but you need to set a limit. My limit is spidey. There’s no end to your wants.
The issue was collecting' you shouldn't collect... be specific buy what you really like.. it brings more joy. When you buy everything it becomes overload and it takes up space. I still regret selling off over 50 G.I. Joes in 7th grade for hair cut money. 1985 to 1989 Joes.. THE BEST FREAKING ERA. Keep what you really love... life is short man.. it's a side of your personality

I think that collecting would stop feeling good if you have so many of them, I literally think it like a month before buying a figure, and I consider the quality and how much I want it.

I dont have a problem collecting. My hobbies ranges from customizing car, video games, and figures. I dont collect all figures from every genre that I love. For example, Digimon d arts/figuarts; I do not collect every single line from it. I only buy the ones I really like or want to collect. I also sells my old figures whenever the newer version is coming out. That way, Im not running out of space or boredom. I also do not buy figures every week, or every month. Thats how I can still enjoy looking at my figures.
A good thing to do is give yourself some rules and follow them that way you keep your collection in check

I collect so many things...it never gets boring for me I have sold things to get other things I wanted or bigger better things or a rare thing I wanted but other than that I don't go to extreams of taking off work or letting it become like a hording issue or anything. I collect enough things that I can still display them well enough that it doesn't look cluttered and if it does i will just sell some off or put some in storage or take some to goodwill for the next lil collector who can't afford the store price. I don't look for the super rare I go by what I want just sometimes those two overlap and if i can I budget for it if I can't then I miss out on it...no big heh I'm a very laid back I guess collector.
I dont quit to collect toys and coin collection i just stop it because i need to balance the amount of stuff or toys and coins I collect because its my problem when i moving to a new house its hard to get them all specially i have a lot of stuff cloaths tables bed and other stuff and i dont have car just a bike and i just commute too

Same here. I stopped collecting funko pop because yeah, it was becoming stressful and the psychological habits are becoming a bit detrimental. Wanted to sell all of them, but my gf wanted to keep them. Now I just started to transition to collecting rare playing cards since they appreciate in value.

I'm not a toy collector but I was a record collector. a month ago I sold my 9000 records I'm 51 and was into records for over 40 years. the last few years the collecting got out of hand and I started getting sick. i used to go in the garage and check them constantly they were always on my mind at work or where ever I was. the boxes were falling apart that they were in and on a few occasions I pulled a record out and it had cracked. I really got upset then and I couldn't check everyone and not knowing what else I would find drove me nuts.i also couldn't keep it all in my brain where some records were.i guess I had to unload them to get peace. I wish I could have kept some but it would have still been too many so I went cold turkey. I do feel sad about it but it's too late now and will never start over again being I'll never find all that I lost and I sure don't have the money. I tried to get into buying cds I hav e about 250 but I don't feel the same about cds as I do about vinyl plus I just learned about DISCROT which isn't helping.so who knows if I'll want to even bother with cds.i guess in time it won't bother me about the records but I had to do what I had to do. my health and well being come first .

I can see myself getting fatigued. But I don't collect toys for any other reason than I have always loved them. I will likely sell parts of my collection, but there are some I won't sell ever. I buy things that I like.
I started collecting at 18 and quit after hot toys started milking iron man. I only have 5 figures. I do, however, want Robocop but I'll wait till someone wants to trade for it.

I'm only 19, I collect antique and vintage toys things like marx trains and tru scale farm toys and go joe and starwars from the 80s. I'm not stopping yet

One for me is longevity- I move brought hot toys one sixth scale in there construction materials used particularly pleather degrades over time - stories of poor craftsmen ship joints breaking- in 2 seconds you’ve lost $500 - when you could put the money into something long lasting. Got to.m be honest I have one or two but I don’t but loads of them
Hope you kept at least the most valuable ones, the ones that have memory markers on them like the one your wife got you you could have saved at least 5 of them

My wife gives me occasional shit about still liking/collecting Transformers. The basic insinuation is that I am somehow less of an adult because I still like "toys" for kids. Many of them are collector grade and engineered to be so complex, few kids could ever transform them. Lately though, I have been leaving a lot of my buys in the box.
My wife's totally cool with me collecting. She's always been supportive, but she'd rather we have really nice display-quality toys on the shelf like Hot Toys, not Marvel Universe 3.75" figures.
If you keep them in the box, why do you feel like you need to buy them? Serious question, not being negative or anything.

When I'm in the store, I feel like I want them, so I buy...but when I get home, I guess I feel some sort of remorse. So I don't open them. Part of me says that leaving them in the box will retain the value too....I have a pretty sizable collection too. I could sell them. The longer I wait...for more.
