I worked at Toys R Us when Gundam Wing model kits arrived. I literally spent my weekly paychecks on Gundam figures. Went broke for 3 months. At the time, I thought I was awesome but now I look back and realize how stupid I was. But when you're young and you live at home with your parents and pay no bills, anything was possible.

I went through a huge personality crisis several years ago and vowed to limit my collecting to just Spider-Man (with extremely rare exceptions for really cool Star Wars, Batman, & pop culture items). Even with Spider-Man, I only get it if I'm at that point where I go "I gotta have it!" I don't just get everything with Spider-Man on it.

Very important lessons for collectors. You have to take the time to curate your collection and decide what you want it to be, otherwise it will become unwieldy and unmanageable. Not to mention financially unsustainable

I sold my whole collection like ten year's ago. Took up the whole guest room and garage. But just recently started collecting again & am just getting what i like when i can afford it sensibly. Started with a custom Thundarr. I feel this time around the game room will be enough to display a new collection. I'll also give toys away to family, grandkids etc. to make room for new one's. Love the video, great share.

Wonderful video! I've had to sell stuff I wanted. I never was able to go down your 2.0 road. My ex wife didn't understand my love for DC/Marvel and my desire to pose and display the heroes and villains. The Megos, Super Powers and Secret Wars long lost in previous moves, I built a nice 5" DC and Marvel collection as an adult, and when the scale went up to 6" I followed, eventually selling my entire 5" collection to make room and honestly, because I felt and still feel it's an upgrade. The ex always was upset and did guilt me into selling some, but after the divorce (for many reasons) I no longer have that problem. Now I continue my exclusively DC/Marvel collection, adding a few extra things that mean a lot. I just get what I love for pose/display purposes. Nothing in package and am very happy with the state of things. Anyway, wonderful video. Thanks for sharing!

I went a similar route when I first started. It was, like most people, getting the items you actually had as a child. I actually accomplished reclaiming most, save for a few items that were just impossible to find, but probably cheap enough to buy if you found them. I never could get that remote control car that ran by shining a flashlight on it. I digress, the collection filled one nice wall in my office. As children we mostly just got toys for our birthday and Christmas and the rare once in awhile occassion while being dragged on shopping excursions with Mom along 5th Ave. Brooklyn. Once bit by the vintage toy collecting bug, I decided to start selling for profit via Toy Shop Magazine. Living in a suburb of NYC afforded a vast array of places you could buy from, sell to, plus yard sales and toy shows. While working a regular job and doing this it was pretty good extra income plus it was fun, sometimes not fun when someone files a claim all the way to The People's Court television show (I lost but really won). After amassing a huge inventory and living in an apartment, I looked around it one day and asked "Why do I have all this junk and living in an apartment?" So I sold it all for a down payment on a house. That house bought another house and I got back a lot of the stuff I had, if I wanted it, back. Now I am slowly building a Batman Museum in my basement. I believe getting your priorities in order will get you to better places, however, some just can't let go. I think they have a show on TV for this...🙂

I've been collecting as an adult for 23 years. Early on I did the 1 to keep in package, 1 to open thing. But I generally was only collecting Star Wars and GIJoe at the time so it didn't get too bad. But I was in fact collecting things I really didn't like. When I found out I was going to be a father, my priorities shifted. I started to figure out I should only collect what I like. I stopped getting doubles, sold off what I didn't like, and only got what I did like. Along the way I have sold stuff I thought I liked but didn't. It happens. But for the most part, I buy something and keep it because I like it. I've been happy. It hasn't got out of control or taken over my life. It's just fun to have which I think is really the entire point of doing all this.

I switched to buying just certain items within a toy line. Now days I look for clone troopers, mandolorians, klingons, borg, music figures, and occasional odds and ends. Now I like to find damaged figures and do custom paint jobs and mods just to have in my collection. My favorite customs are now some of my favorite pieces like the ones I did of my cosplays of a red black mandalorian, red armored saiyan, or of figures never produced like Mr Bones.

From time to time I sell for any of these reasons to keep myself in check. To get rid of something I no longer have an interest in, doesn't fit in the collection anymore, or to get my $ back or make a buck. For collectors who only accumulated but never sold, try listing something or selling a least liked item you have to see how difficult it could be. I say this because I know collectors that decided they did want what they had anymore and either ended up taking a bath or found other collectors weren't as interested as themselves and they were unable to move stuff. Collecting can be addictive.

This is what happened to me with video game/console collecting. I was buying everything and anything - duplicate copies of games, sealed copies, alternative console models and so on. It was a compulsion. It was only when I finally obtained my 'holy grail' piece that I saw my collection for what it was - a formless mass which took up too much space. The majority of what I had collected was little more than something to fill the void of my missing holy grail. Once I had that piece in my possession I then saw that I had lost sight of what my collection was intended to be and I now could sell what I never truly wanted in the first place. It was liberating to be able to say "I'm done" and close that chapter.
I have since found a holy grail toyline to chase, but I've learned from my video game collecting experience to stay focused and not deviate from my original idea. If I stop having fun that means it's time to stop and reassess what I'm doing.
    Great video.

Gaming and movies...those are my vices.
I'm 40 years old and my parents bought me my first gaming system, the NES in 86 when I was around verging on 6 years of age. Needless to say, I never looked back. And while life has taken me through ups and downs where selling to pawn shops and the like were sometimes necessary, I've always managed to either retain my most important pieces or re-purchase what I lost later. Today, my collections encompass over 850 movies/series on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K, and over 570 games across 19 systems and six console generations. I also have movie and game related paraphernalia revolving mostly around action figures, posters and a 1UP Arcade. And while that all may sound like a lot, it utterly pales in comparison to UA-camr room tours where the collections rest in the thousands or tens of thousands of pieces.
And that level of obsession has never been understandable to me. How any of those games/movies have you actually played/seen? How many do you even like? How many do you have 3 or more copies of? There's a lot of "Why?" there to me.
I have always had five hard-and-fast rules to my collecting; rules that I've only broken on the rarest of occasions. (1.) I DON'T collect based on projected or perceived future value. It's not about the money or the resale. I believe in the preservation of physical media. (2.) Never pay more for an item than it's earnestly worth until I've exhausted all other options and there's no other choice. (3.) Never buy anything that I don't have an affinity for, that isn't a direct part of my childhood or that I have no intention to play/watch. (4.) If I upgrade to what I believe to be a superior version of something I already own, I sell the inferior copy to recoup some of the cost of the repurchase. (5.) Outside of a handful of special cases, I DON'T do duplicates.
While game and movie collecting is far from inexpensive, holding to these rules have not only helped me keep my collection manageable and relevant to the nuances of my personal passions, but it's also allowed me to have a small collection that I can be content with that's not driving me to the poor house or to divorce due to obsession. There's nothing that I own that I look at and wonder why I own it. And my collection isn't such that I'm driven to no longer love...what I love.
Personally, I think that there are a lot of collectors out there who collect just for the sake of collecting or because they want to be known as "the one with the most". And that lack of focus or goal is what leads to a lot of issues such as disillusionment, a loss of love for the act of collecting and even an inability to afford the important things in life such as food in your refrigerator, a reliable form of transportation or a home as opposed to a possibly unsafe apartment. (case-in-point: Radical Reggie's UA-cam game room tour videos...both his stand alone and his MetalJesus collaboration).

I sold almost everything when we I got married. We had no savings for a wedding, honeymoon, and starter items like furniture/plates/etc. For ten years never bought anything since the discretionary income simply wasn't there. Last year (about 15 years since we got married) I asked my wife if we could talk. We're not rich but we're doing OK. I told her how much I missed that part of my life. I don't golf, buy expensive clothes, or things many other adults do with money. I asked if I could re-buy some comics and plastic. She agreed I can have 75.00 a month to do whatever.

Some of us have to understand that once you get in a married relationship, not every decision is your own. His wife knows that his hobby is a part of his life and is something he enjoys, but knows that it can get very pricy and that they still have to be financially stable. But you also have to be in the same position with your wife, does she have a monthly allowance for her money? A marriage has to be equal throughout it for it to continue, hope you and your wife the best and have fun collecting again!

      @TheCatBytes 4 роки тому

@@mercy7364 I am married too. It hasn't affected my hobby whatsoever and won't because I found someone who respects what I enjoy and who I am as I do for her in return. If someone tries to change you from harmless things you enjoy, that is not a healthy relationship.

My weirdest obsessive collecting habit spanning over decades which I grew to really resent? The Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. It took me 20 years and 30+ books to realize I never really liked that series THAT much. Pratchett's prose is clever and imaginative in its fantastic metaphors of our own world - but somehow something at the very core of it didn't resonate with me. I got into it because I *kinda* liked the Discworld video games of the mid-90's - but even in those early days I wasn't exactly fascinated by the books. Over the years my tastes in literature changed dramatically - but I instisted on buying these comedy fantasy books I liked less and less as time went on. Grabbed them off the shelves, came home - and though "Urgh, now I have to read that...". It truly became a chore. So last year, with just a few books short of the whole collection, I decided that that was it.

Lost my first comic collection to flooding. Lost my childhood toys to damage from play and thinking I needed to grow up after failing at college. Lost my second toy collection to space constraints and financial need. I'm 40 now and have 3 kids, I started collecting again about 10 years ago, I've completely rebuilt my Superman comics collection and buy anything with a Superman logo on it under $5. I have a varied collection of toys, mostly Superman, TMNT, and Star Wars, but I only buy what's on clearance with the exception of a few items that just really excite me. I have started just this year collecting the 90s Man Of Steel Kenner toys with the intention of having my first ever complete set of a toy line. When things get too crowded or I feel like the herd needs thinning I split things up amongst my kids, which gives me as much joy as buying them in the first place. Setting limits and taking my time has made collecting so much more enjoyable. Thanks for this video, it's good to know I'm not alone.

This video truly speaks to me. I started collecting Hotwheels in March of 2014. At first I picked up only the cars that I really liked. Then I would begin to hear all kinds of “buzz” about how valuable a particular release was going to be in the future and I’d have to run out and buy 10 or 12 copies of it. Eventually I just started buying every car that I thought looked cool in multiples. One day, when I reached approximately 8,500 cars, I knew it was time to start selling off a huge chunk of my collection and go back to the way I started out. Only buying my very favorite models. I’m now down to under 1,000 cars and they are only the cream of the crop.

Your story is well documented and I will say, I traveled a similar path however not on the same level. Following the Tobey Maguire Spiderman, I went berserk. Everything retro was new again and I was buying on a frenzy. It’s funny because, one day I said the same thing having accumulated enough to fill maybe 3/4 of a room on display. I walked in one day and asked WTH do I have all of these figures? So many variants and carded figures. Figures stored in boxes I forgot about. The fun of it all and the memories they held, mattered more by holding them. So I sold all of my carded figures to include a Hasbro BulletMan and a majority of my loose figures and only kept those that reminded me specifically of my childhood. Not different variations of them, not four and five examples or the complete run of an action figure line. Just that one toy that I wanted as a kid. For example I wanted the Shogun Warrior Raydeen but never had one. I recently bought one in well played with condition, restored the box and the figure and it’s on display as eye-candy. I don’t need all of them, I don’t need the rarest and I certainly don’t need Massinger Z lol (over it already), because I’m fine with only having the one I truly wanted as a kid in my current collection. So now, my collection is housed in 5 detolfs and another large curio. My philosophy is, if it won’t fit in the display cabinets I have, it will remain a memory without a physical example UNLESS, and there’s always an unless...I sell something in order for the new “want” to take its place on the shelf.

Yeah, my professor was talking to the class about that. Said she used to collect dragon statues because it was something that wasn't too common, so when she did see them she bought them, they were special. Now, you could theoretically collect all of the dragon statues. There's less of a hunt, and for some people that kind of kills the enchantment.
But as you've proved it really just depends on how strong your connection to something is. If you truly love it, you'll make it work with time.

I never truly understood why people got obsessed over getting every price they could of something they liked and not just the ones that held value to them. I'm at that point where I only need the characters I liked from my youth. I'm a huge Freddy Krueger fan but honestly I don't need Freddy Freddy from each movie entry. Just the ones I liked like 4 and 7.thats good enough for me now.

This was very close to my own story. Working in a toy store certainly fed my addiction. Learning the ins and outs of eBay since its inception also helped me acquire way too much stuff.
Now I let my son open many of these things. Because isn't that's what it's all about?

"Now I let my son open many of these things. Because isn't that's what it's all about?" not really, but it really depends on the person/collector, some enjoy the figures far more in the sealed packaging on a shelf.
I personally could never open or play with any of them(I collect a wide variety of things like Raimi and comics based Spiderman figures, Matrix, Coraline etc)

@@prufan I have a number of unopened things I keep or display (Although my McFarlane Ash and some others through the years were too cool to leave in the packaging.) There are also toys made today that are clearly not for kids. But toys in general, ARE for kids. They are the tools of imaginative play. If you don't have any (kids, not toys,) I highly recommend them. It is through their sense of wonder that we get to enjoy a taste of youth again. And my Micronauts figures with magnetic, detachable limbs got to have some fun too.

There has to be a line in collecting. I have a carded dr who cyberman collection. I've limited it to one of each type, avoided dupicates in other packs as they are just cash grabs. I'm happy with what I have....and only need a couple to have a complete set. I could go the whole hog and get everything but it's throwing away money as it would just be figures I already have or boxed sets which take up alot of space. Completing a collection is bitter sweet as the thrill of the chase is a big part of it.
There has to be a end line.

When people get into collecting and then that evolves into primarily 'collecting for investment' everything goes awry. If you aren't collecting out of love and passion then you're genuinely doing it wrong. You're a speculator, not a collector. Great to see you came back from that Dan, you need to do the homework and mental stock take often to make sure you're really getting value (across the entire spectrum of the word's meaning) out of what you're putting your finite resources behind.

It must've been rough being a collector before eBay. I consider myself lucky to always have the opportunity to pay double MSRP for another Legends on the Bucky Cap body.
Jokes aside, this video has been validating and therapeutic. I've gone through the exact thought process of buying two of an action figure to keep one new in box. Not to sell, but in case my first one breaks somehow. It's my backup figure. I've since grown to value toys less into adulthood, and I'm not opposed to letting things go.
It seems like life has been a constant process of striving to put less sentimental value in material possessions. I don't have to buy an action figure of every character I like. Plastic only degrades over time, and there are better investments for me elsewhere. Power to those of you who are still able to find joy in toy collecting.

I'd say I'm probably in the early stages of Collection 2.0. Only consisting of Transformers. I'm not buying 2 or 3 of a figures, but I was really really close, I don't even buy Transformers of the same Mold, I'll buy re-molds/retools if there is enough difference that it looks like a different figure, but I'm trying my best to prevent it from going out of control as much as I can. When I got back into them last year I was pretty much in a "Gotta catch em all!" mood, but now I'm rearing back and I am only buying figures I really want with the exception of a few because of prices(Masterpiece Shockwave). Now I only buy a toy if I see a few video reviews of it so I can see if the Transformation looks fun, and if it doesn't look like it will break after a couple times to vehicle and back to robot mode.
That said, there are a few figures I'm planning to get rid of that I only bought because I had an itch of "I have not gotten a new Transformer in a couple weeks, that needs to change."
I still have that itch, but I decided to satisfy it differently. I pick out the figure that is only shipped 1 per case. Because the others always end up shelf/peg warming and will be there for a few weeks before My local stores re-stock. And I buy one of those shelf warmers when I get that itch. I never buy more than one at a time because no matter if I bought 1, 2, or 5, A week later I would be needing to scratch it again. It also really helps when one of the lines out right now I have no interest in, and no interest in another outside of one figure.
But when it comes to when I actually decide to sell off everything. I already know what I 100% plan on keeping. I only plan on keeping my Shockwave figures, and maybe a few Armada figures from when I first got into them or that I wanted for years and only got last year, and the ones Family bought me for Birthdays or christmas. and only buying more when a new Shockwave is out.

I know this is an old video, and the comment will probably end up going to the either....
I decided one of my long-term goals if my youtube channel is successful, is to turn my hobby *cough* obsession *cough* into something viable and productive.
I came up with this idea for a sort of children's/pop culture museum and storage center.
The idea is that collectors who are having space issues can donate their collection to the museum for display, also you can donate broken or old toys to be fixed and repurposed.. Collectors will be able to buy mint in box high-end products, while the kids can get a "Repackaged" version of "He-man" that they can open and get the same experience Dad and Mom had, but without the heart-wrenching idea of losing thousands of dollars.
My idea is to have various spaces for each brand, Ninja turtle, he-man, g.i.joe, etc. Kids will have bins to get into and just go to town... as all toys should be played with... while there are displays of the figures in the package, and in various dioramas... while the TV Series is playing on the TV.
For collectors who donate funding to the museum, I plan on having long-term storage space for vaulting a collection as well.
And, when the time comes and I move to the great Tokyo in the sky... I want to turn it into a time capsule of pop culture.
All the plastic will be melted due to the destabilization of the material. The cardboard will be faded to white... but after 1000 years, everything will be as preserved as it could possibly be, with crystal hard drive backup files of everything scanned and ready to be re-created as best as can be.

I totally get you and I have lost control somewhat. There was a time I would've never considered paying anywhere close to $100 for a Transformer (MP Grimlock at TRU to be exact). But 10 years later I bought the KFC Junkions for $170. Characters I barely knew from the movie and didn't like all that much. I broke down and bought them on the second run. I was mostly talked into it by emgo, Bobby Skullface, Benscollectables and the Reprolabel set for them look amazing! I think that is possibly the most strayed from what I planned to get of just about anything in my collection, at least at the cost.
Strangely one of my favorite figures is the Unique Toys Allen with Reprolabels. I never was a Springer fan that much. When I saw the releases of Springer in MP form, I thought that is crazy, they are going way too far. Fast forward a while and seeing it over and over beside Ultra Magnus, and I was sold. Luckily for $85, after missing the BBTS blowout for $60. The figure IMO is one of the most beautiful eye catching pieces I have. I also think DX9 Richthofen is almost perfect to the character - maybe the most definitive character representation in my collection. I refused MMC Sphinx for a long time, but the more I saw him the less I could stand to keep passng him by. But anyway, getting off topic...
I bought a few odd and ends like Ares Nitrogen who was never an expected purchase. I have ended up buying 4 different Shockwaves (the Prime Beast Wars 1st, the MP 2nd, then the Cloud9, and last FT Quakewave for $65). For the heck of me, I could not decide which I liked best. I am waiting on the FT edition but I think I will like him the best. I bought Yes Model's Hardhead and Chromedome for $53 each, I think they are kind of cool but mostly as S2 troop build. Totally, a growing my collection rather than my main characters. They look good, but don't bring me the level of happiness as MP10, who was supposed to be one of the only figures I was ever going to pay so much serious cash for. But I couldn't pass up MP Soundwave or the FT Dibots, then I needed a Megatron and the Coneheads were mighty tempting. Had to get Starscream then. And the collection has just kept growing then on...
I still haven't bought MP Sunstreaker, though, because of the price being over $100, so I haven't completely lost my sanity and the value of $1, but close.

I'm into Masterpiece and 3rd Party Masterpiece Transformers, because they closely approximate the G1 cartoon look, while still having realistic alt modes like the original toys. These give me the very very best versions of these characters to look at and fiddle with. This tickles my nostalgia funny bone to the nth degree.
I hardly buy multiples because that doesn't trip my nostalgia. That just seems wasteful.
I loved Transformers Seasons 1 and 2, so I must complete my collection of those characters. After that, I only want the coolest characters from the other seasons and spin-off shows.
If a better version comes up, then I could always sell mine and buy the better new one. But generally, I buy most of my stuff a season or two after it comes out, so I can choose between the different options and go with the very best one. I don't rush out and buy the newest one, and then have buyer's remorse because 3 or 4 more versions come out from competitors. I might pay more for mine in the aftermarket, but I get the one that I really want and I stick with it.
I've finished my Season 1 collection, and I have cooled off a bit with Season 2. I'm in control here. No mindless addiction.
Besides, gun ammunition is a higher priority these days. Toys have been moved to the back burner.

Collecting can be a bit of a rabbit hole. At first it starts with one figure a month. Then every other week. After a while you realize you sunk thousands of dollars on things that don't always retain value.
My wife gets upset because she says I have jumped from one expensive collecting habit($40.00 a week on comics) to another(3-4 brand new games a month) to another(action figures).
I have slowed down considerably to just the things that remind me of my childhood or that I never had when I was a kid. It can still be expensive, but nowhere near the amount i was spending before.

"Collection 1.0" My childhood dolls, most of them gifts from family and friends, most of them the same blue eyed, blonde Barbie face over and over because that's what 90s Barbie was if you didn't buy her friends too. Sold most of them one day when I decided 90s Barbies were not my thing.
"Collection 2.0" When I started collecting again, it was Bratz and My Scene dolls. And the thing was, I didn't have her yet so I needed her even though I didn't really like her makeup or clothes. I wound up with over 300 dolls. I still have them, but I reached a point as My Scene and Bratz both faded from existence where I realized there wasn't a chance in hell I would ever complete the collection, so I stopped trying to do so. I stopped buying duplicates unless I had an exceptionally good reason to do so, for example, I do have two of my first My Scene Barbie, the one I abused as a twelve year old and a second one I bought because the first despite the fact that I won't give her up is so badly beaten to hell. And for a couple of years, I stepped out of the doll world altogether. I couldn't justify it to myself, spending the money on a doll. Took me a few years to get back into the collection.
"Collection 3.0", the current collection. It's more diverse instead of fixated on completing one particular collection, it's a little crazy looking from the outside. But I stopped trying to complete lines and buying the ones I didn't really want just because I didn't have them yet. Instead, I buy only the ones I truly want. It does mean I own some more expensive dolls now than I ever did in the past - I gave in and bought some of the ones I had dreamed of having as a kid (American Girl, for example) which aren't cheap, but they're so worth it. I love my current collection. But dolls are more fickle to collect than action figures...Barbie is the only doll line that doesn't eventually die out, fade away for years at a time etc. And even she gets a massive makeover every few years.
