    It was brief, but I liked how you mentioned that one of the reasons we collect things is to "prove" we love these franchises. That's something I'm trying to remind myself of... Y'know, I DON'T need to spend $25 apiece on Twilight Zone ReAction figures just to prove that I love Twilight Zone 😆

      @MonsterKidCory dude I still have to to talk myself down all the time, especially with all of the sales and clearance lately. There's literally figures for everything these days I just love too many things.

    • @imadubsfan1
      @imadubsfan1 4 місяці тому

      He says "prove", I say "support" and in the end I realize it's the same thing haha! It's so true. I've since cancelled some preorders for a line I haven't collected from in awhile and it's probably the right choice. I may get it someday on a slower month or something, but i've been trying to focus on one line at a time now or budget to $150 or less per month. And that can easily be filled up if you collect just one $100 figure.

    This is one of the most important videos on this topic and very well done. It was a refreshing counter point to all those collecting bruhs here on UA-cam who flaunt their massive collection or tease selling everything they own getting cheap engagement clicks from folks who are really struggling but it's all for show.
    Appreciate your candor on this.

      @puffinman1138 glad you dug the video dude! I definitely use the phrase, "I don't make a lot of money, I'm just really irresponsible with my money" quite a bit haha. I've definitely made a lot of strides since I made this video. I've passed on a lot of things that I wouldn't have even thought twice about two years ago. Not going in on the NECA sewer lair was a big test for me.

    13 years ago I ran out of room in the small place I was living at and decided to stop collecting. I also got into the whole minimalist thing. Well like any other collector I got obsessed with something else but in my case it was paying down my credit cards. I would constantly pay towards my credit cards even if it was only $5. I got a dopamine rush from seeing the balance on my credit cards go down. Any side hustle money I got went towards paying off credit cards. I also started selling things I didn't use. I didn't sell off my toy collection instead I stored it in boxes. I set up an ebay account and started selling things other trinkets I had been collecting. I sold off a big chunk of my book collection. Eventually I started collecting something else and dove deep into that and the credit cards started get maxed out again. As you stop collecting other toy lines and only focus TMT and Power Rangers be careful you don't start collecting something else that isn't toy related but gives you the same dopamine rush.

    • @noyougrowup69
      @noyougrowup69  Рік тому +9

      @cobracommander9138 dude it's so funny that you talk about getting the rush from paying down your credit cards because that's exactly how it's been for me as well. Like you said even if it's just small chunks, you can almost turn it into a game. It's also interesting that you've essentially shifted back and fourth from minimalist to maximalist tendencies. I definitely love things too much to ever go minimalist.
      I definitely have other traps to fall into mainly comics, but I think I finally have a grasp on things for the first time ever.

    Yeah, I was in that boat, too! I was buying too much stuff for a while, and during the pandemic got caught in the "exclusive" trap, going crazy for all the Classified and NECA exclusives that blew up around that time, wasting a ton of time and money searching for them. I ended up selling most of it--it was just that cheap thrill of the hunt and I realized they didn't really mean anything to me. Actually, that Super7 Slash helped me break out of that cycle. I loved that figure so much that I realized I was wasting my time with a lot of other toys. This figure actually meant something to me, and I decided to only buy toys that gave me a similar feeling.

    • @noyougrowup69
      @noyougrowup69  Рік тому

      @AutomaTom1939 I feel like the exclusive game and the artificial scarcity really got the best of us over the last couple of years. I actually had a very similar experience that you had with Slash recently as well. I got the Spider-Man animated series Doc Oc and he has the bendy wire tentacles and he has made me happier than any non TMNT figure I've gotten in a very long time. That's what I'm going to try to focus on going forward, finding things that give me that feeling.

    I wish I could like this video ten times over! Fortunately, I was never too crazy into collecting as you say you were (and I'm glad you came to grips with the hobby) but the stuff you say about preorders all hitting at once REALLY made me stop and think and ask myself " What I do I really want to keep forever and what can I do without if I was destitute?" Also helped that a local toy store opened up nearby where they buy used figures. Just knowing that I could walk down the street to get rid of any of my figs really helped me learn to only order figures that I could not picture selling to the store. Helps me keep focused on collecting figs I really do want. Again, great video and please keep them coming!

    It's incredible how quickly the dopamine comes and goes again from packages arriving at your doorstep
    And also the rationalizations and justifications your mind comes up with to keep adding to the collection
    (URGENT! URGENT! Limited editions, 10% discounts, self-rewards, self-consolations, future plans for the collection, and on and on...)

    Hey, I just happened to discover your channel right before you posted this video and I want to applaud you for your strength in looking at that addictive aspect of this hobby. I have a buddy who’s way into Elvis and became obsessed with collecting all of his original records, to the point where he clearly wasn’t actively enjoying what he already had, because he was so focused on what he still needed to get. Luckily, he’s had the same realization you did and now buys what he can and takes time to fully enjoy it. Honestly, sometimes I’m thankful to be broke, or else I’d get sucked into it as well. Great video. I've experienced the high of getting a new figure followed by the financial anxiety crash afterwards. As a vintage collector I get a thrill from finding the figures and bringing them home. You never know if that fig will be there the next time so there is pressure to buy it, but then I sit and wonder if I overpaid. Collecting new stuff would be overwhelming because of the number of stuff, pre-ordering and scalpers. I don't have my finger on the pulse to know whats coming out and just enjoy channels like yours where I can enjoy your collection. Sticking to flea markets, garage sales and toy shops keeps it from getting out of hand. If I did EBAY I'd be in trouble pretty quick. I don't know if you like Earnest, but I found the pull string doll from1989 for $14 at a flea market the other day. Pretty mint.

      You really do have to be very with it to get modern figures at retail. If you're even a week late, you might miss out. Hell with some lines if you're not there in the fist minute it might be gone haha.
      I love Earnest. I had "Goes to Camp" and "Saves Christmas" and rented the other ones all the time. "Scared Stupid" did actually scare me as a kid haha.

I LOVE tmnt, motu, Transformers, Star Wars, Marvel and DC. Not only that but then Neca comes along with Gargoyles, D&D, and other horror properties. Spawn figures have come back in the past few years. It's been really hard and so far I haven't managed to cut myself off from anything completely, but I have cut back.

    These Toy Companies just decided to hit us with so much Nostalgia all at once that I think it over whelmed us. Marvel Legends, Star Wars the Black Series doing movie figures on retro cards celebrating annv. dates like Empire Strikes Back and Jedi, GiJoe Classifieds, Motu Origins, Masterverse, TMNT classics hitting the shelves again on retro cards and DC Multiverse. Preorders are a nightmare because you don't know when they are going to come. Hasbro raising prices. Store Exclusives being a pain and your store telling you that they only got one in etc. I have come to the realization after messing with my old Star Wars vintage figures from the 80s and Super Powers from back then that I just really only care for the stuff I had when I was a kid. I have canceled my pre-orders on some future purchases and wrapping up my Joes with Retro Cobra Commander. Thats pretty much it for me.

      @DavidMoore-eu3jv for real it's like once there was blood in the water every company came out of the woodwork to go after 80's and 90's kid's nostalgia. It's funny you mention that about the OG Star Wars and Super Powers because I'm really thinking my focus is going to shift back to OG Playmates after this year. It's why I got into all of this in the first place and I feel like I'm finally satisfied with where I am with my modern TMNT stuff.

I’d legit go to about 30 - 50 gigs a year. Then Covid hit and all the gigs stopped. I had about £2k saved up that was meant to be spent on 2 full tours I had planned with my girlfriend - (Our Hollow Our Home & InVisions check em out if you like Metalcore lol).
    I literally squandered the money on all sorts and even did all the overtime under the sun cos I was working from home full time. I started collecting Gi Joe Classified, Transformers, Neca horror figures, Neca Alien and Predators, Gremlins, McFarlane DC Multiverse, Warhammer and Spawn along with Yu Gi Oh, Pokemon, Magic and Cardfight Vanguard. I have recently had to really re-evaluate how addictive this has become and I’ve stopped collecting Transformers, McFarlane Warhammer, trading cards which I now only buy as a treat. It is a deep hole to fall into. I don’t regret it but it’s definitely a lesson in self control lol

    For me, collecting and hoarding are interchangeable terms. I too decided to sell off my entire action figure collection. I was in love with the hobby, probably am still. I don't know, I just looked in the mirror one day and said this won't be the kind of thing I show off with pride at 50, 60 years old. Do what makes you happy but understand that if you're buying ANYTHING simply for the rush then we are all just as addicted as the drinker and/or illicit drug user.

I've said this to other people that's the one thing I didn't touch on is being more addicted to the hunting than the actual owning.

    Recently seen a few videos about this pop up on my feed... I could not relate more. This is a classic ADHD thing, I know because I was recently diagnosed with it. It can be our greatest strength and weakness at the same time. It's what led me to go from not being able to draw 4 years ago to become a tattoo artist, but like you, its what has made me spend $10-20K on collectibles and cards in the last 1 - 2 years. Also, every few weeks, months, years, like you said, the interests keep switching and so does the "addiction". It is definitely very tough to live with, but like I said, can be a great strength and weakness.

    • @noyougrowup69
      @noyougrowup69  3 місяці тому +1

      @inkbyhero ADHD seems to be what everyone is landing on and since it's mostly people like you saying they were recently diagnosed, it makes me think you're all on to something. Like you I definitely see some of the characteristics as a plus such as the hyper fixation on things. I can harness that into creativity and I've always just referred to it as getting in the zone. Also crazy how you went from not being able to draw to doing tattoos you definitely had untapped potential because no amount of hyper fixation is ever going to get me to draw well haha.

Downsized to 2 x 6 foot tall glass display cabinets that are about 2 Detolfs wide each & said to myself, whatever I get, it’s all gotta fit in these 2 display cases. If there’s no room for something new, I have to sell something off.

    Totally been there before where the hobby feels almost more of a hassle than an enjoyment. Outside of my NECA TMNT, my other love is collecting vinyl records of albums that I love. I can be pretty selective on things I like, but with special days like Record Store Day, a yearly holiday for local record stores where only limited edition vinyl is available, I've definitely felt the FOMO feeling for things I maybe have only listened to a few times ... and waited out in the cold in April for 5 hours to get, haha.
    Regardless, the hunt is fun ... but it can be stressful. Originally I was going to stick with the movie line, but then it grew into the toon line ... now I dabble in some Archie characters who have the best representation (Slash / Man-Ray | Ray Filet, etc ...). I know I'd be in trouble if I got other brands of stuff I like or other TMNT lines, haha. I keep thinking about getting the four brothers in the Super7 line as I got the Shredder for free ... but I would want to get them at a discount lol.
    Outside of me rambling, great video man. I totally also have had that "monomania" feeling where my interest or hobby is all I can think about in spare time. Whether it's gaming, collecting records, thinking about live music, watching figure reviews ... I usually get super focused on what I'm into at the time haha

      @jacobniehaus dude I never would have guessed that the vinyl game would do that to people haha. But I guess "limited edition" plagues every collecting community.
      I definitely used to enjoy the hunt a lot more but after a while I just think of how many times I spent an hour driving around after work with nothing to show for it.
      Not trying to get you hooked on anything, but you can find S7 Raph and Leo pretty cheap on Amazon from 3rd party sellers. Again, not trying to ruin your life, just letting you know haha.
      Glad you understand the monomaniac tendencies haha.

      @@noyougrowup69 Oh yeah man, records can be a wild situation ... thankfully I haven't had to go TOO crazy, but some may say getting at my local record shop at 4:30 in the morning to wait till it opens at 10 and being the 5th person in line might be crazy, haha. You'd be surprised how bad the flippers are with LPs too. Thankfully with my taste in music, I don't usually have to fight people off ... usually, haha.
      And I agree. The hunt on a lunch break or after work can be worth it really ONLY when it pays for you. Back in March when Haulathon was going on, I was driving around and I saw a Target about a half hour away from me had some stuff not even stocked yet ... like it was still IN the NECA shipper. I made the drive and by sheer luck was able to get everything I wanted ... so like, I think to times like that and it makes it fun but then there are other times where I found myself driving around thinking "Where am I?" because I've gone to a million different Wal-Marts trying to find SOTO Shredder lol.
      Oh, and dude I've been following those Amazon listings like a hawk! I even have some store credit at a local shop that has a used Leo/Raph in their box still ... but it seems like Mike and Donnie never go down in price and I'm not at the point yet to spend any extra on what retail was for them. You have ADHD.
    ✅ Addictive personality
    ✅ Easily distracted
    ✅ Impulse spending
    ✅ Heavy partying
    ✅ Hyperfixation to the point of neglecting other activities
    You’re not an addict, you’re just neurodivergent. You were born this way. You can see a professional and they can help you navigate your life better with or without pharmaceuticals.

I always get all the chores done before I get into my hobbies when I get home from work and my house is always clean and organized. But you're definitely not the only person who mentioned the ADHD thing so you guys my be on to something. I've never been checked for it because I've never seen it as a problem but maybe I'll mention it the next time I'm at the doctor's office.

      @profesor-cris easily the single worst thing I let myself do while collecting. I've never really been one to care about money and for the first time I actually do and it's helped a lot. Yeah gotta stick to one line. I collect vintage TMNT, have all 4 of the neca movie 1 turtles and would like a few more neca movie but I can’t get into the Fred Wolf TMNT or super7 TMNT it’s just too much. Limiting myself to vintage playmates and some neca movie.

      @toewstokane9023 smart man. if I could go back and do everything again, I think I would have just stuck with vintage myself. Don't get me wrong, I love the modern stuff, but sometimes I just think about how sick of an OG collection I could have if I never would have gotten into modern.

So I def don't make a ton of money, but it goes far here. Also I had a bit of a credit card problem for a while haha. If there is one thing I wish I did have money for though is more hardcover collected editions.

    I’m surprised you and your buddy Brendan never talk about Batman The Animated Series or those old Kenner toys… I love the turtles but I am such a diehard Batman fan.. literally NOTHING can touch that show and unlike TMNT 87 BTAS holds up incredibly well!! Love 87 show but no where near on the level that BTAS was, just surprised because we are all around the same age and you guys don’t mention BTAS at all lol also I wish super 7 or another company would release the old Kenner toys but as a modern take like they did for playmates TMNT

    • @noyougrowup69
      @noyougrowup69  Рік тому +1

      @irishknight6893 you know it's funny you mention that because I've thought the same thing myself before. That was probably a top 5 line from my childhood. I was into it early on and I love it when they shifted to the animated series style figures. I'm not sure why it didn't stick with my like turtles and X-Men have.
      I think you could argue the Batman animated series to be the best of the cartoons at the time. That and X-Men changed the game for kids shows.
      It is a bummer that McFarlane has the DC toy license I don't think you'll see them from him any time soon but who knows.
