This is the best PS1 emulator right now, and it's still in alpha! In less than a year it has caught up with the most popular PS1 emulators in compatibility and arguably surpassed most if not all of them (including Beetle) and its accuracy is among the best, and probably only surpassed by Beetle and Xebra. The development is so fast and each new update is so huge that it beggars belief!
Got this emulator going, and damn. Such a major improvement over the EPSXE. Once you get this thing running like in the video, it really is the best Playstation emulator out there that provides more stability to many of these games, upscales to 4K beautifully, and having played some action games I grew up with. it feels like a new lease and reason to go through them. I highly recommend this emulator wholeheartedly and find it to be the best way to re-discover the classics on this console.
Just last week, I replaced ePSXe on my Windows PC with DuckStation. It picks up all my CHD files, Something ePSXe doesn't support. This emulator gets updated daily, the hottest PSX emu currently. I personally prefer the QT interface.
@@anthonybalista7421 yes. All my PS1 games are in CHD format. I batch converted all my BIN/CUE games into a single CHD file. No more need for multiple folders. But unfortunately two disk games can't be merged, although you can use a m3u8 to swap disks easy.
Thanks for this beautiful guide! First time dabbling into emulation and I was nervous that it would be hard to set up. After watching this, i've got Xenogears properly working and gonna play it for the first time.
I just started playing around with ePSXe when I came across this video. Apart from the upscaling I could nowhere near get it to run as smoothly as on DuckStation. Happy days. Thanks!
Tried this out last night with 4K +9X resolution with the geometry fix. It looks really good, perhaps too good. With that resolution it completely removed the pixelation, which the PlayStation is remembered for. But, the geometry fix does take care of most of the polygon wobbling, which is great! Especially for racers like Wipeout and Destruction Derby 2
Took me a moment to figure out what was the issue with blurry animation. If you're like me try *disabling Interlacing.* Promising project overall, thanks for the update.
If I may, ETA, I'd like to suggest using or playing around with the PGXP options that are available just below the upscaling and filter options. What PGXP does basically, is that it fixes the really weird model/texture warping (subpixel precision) during movement that PSX games are known for. Enabling PGXP makes the games look incredibly better without that odd warping. A good game to test this is Tomb Raider, as that one has a lot of warping.
@@malikcrim13 Your not weird, pixel art and voxel art are an art form in itself, especially now, I really miss them some times, but retro style games are available in the indie scene. Retro games look very cool. Some games look atrocious with texture filter and anti-alias cause it can look like a blurry mess, not sharp. Some games can look better though, usually with higher texture res and/or screen res. N64 have many bad looking blurry textured games for example, i.e. low texture res combined with texture filter, which looks like a mess. Some DS games look rubbish too even though it has no texture filter function and the reason is that the screen resolution is quite low. In the hands of great developers with no time constraint games can look great on them though. Certain charm to Saturn and PS1 games!
I just tried this emulator out on the Shield Pro through RetroArch and the results are impressive. I was able to change the resolution to 1080p and turn on the texture & geometry corrections with no visible slowdown. 4K works, too in less demanding games.
Finally we got a new PS1 emulator with full 4K support! ePSXe last update is pretty much outdated now but I bet this emulator can do so much than just 4K :) Btw Love your videos ETA! keep it up!!

One thing that this does really well on android, some PS1 games seem to only support dpad and not analog stick, with epsxe I couldn't use the analogue stick as dpad even when I mapped it, at least the game I played didn't recognise it, this emulator had no issue with that
If on desktop, try checking the "use analog sticks for d-pad in digital mode" option. On Android, if you have it set to the Digital Controller, it should do this automatically, but still need to add the option for analog there.

Duckstation though, works absolutely amazing! Thanks to your video it was super easy to setup, which is another reason I had trouble in the past, not being emulator savvy I had so many problems with how to set the emulator up and finding which setting would work with what game. I know you didn't personally create Duckstation but because of your video showing up randomly in my recommended feed I am now able to play all my favorite classic games without any issues. So for that dude I can't thank you enough.
Very nice! I was already planning to make a tutorial for how to use DuckStation late last year, but the holidays kinda made me postpone those plans. I personally prefer the QT version of the software. It gives it a much more stock-Windows UI, with easier to navigate and adjust settings. Also, do try out the PGXP enhancements! Those eliminate the wobbly and wavy 3D models and textures in PS1 games! Looks very nice in games like TR and SH1.
Dude this is great, thanks for making this! I was speedrunning spyro 2 on mednafen and was having all sorts of issues. I've been using Duckstation for 2 hours and its already way better!
Finally and PSX emulator that applies a Z-buffer! Upscaling was always a a problem because it increased texture wobbling. Being able to force 24bit colour and remove dither is also a nice bonus.
Depth/Z buffering isn't available yet, but I have been working on it and will merge soon. Just trying to improve the compatibility, it's sadly very hit and miss. But works very well in some games.
So I just tested it and it really is amazing. It's easier to setup than Beetle HW and has all the convenience of something like Dolphin. Also, some games that look broken when upscaled in beetle hw, look fantastic in duckstation. It would have been my favorite ps1 emulator right now if not for ONE little problem: input recognition seems to be a little fucked. It doesn't recognize when I hold buttons, R1 L1 square, any of them. It recognizes as if I were tapping them instead of holding. It's not something with my controller since it's been tested with every other emulator under the sun, and this is also happening with keyboard inputs, so I just have no idea what's happening. A shame really, it's the only problem I've encountered. I wouldn't mind ditching the beetle for the duck.
i have been waiting for something like this for years. thank you for informing me of this emulator because it has been the only ps1 emulator i could get to run the way i wanted it to i really appriciate this video man.
Just using duckstation and it just...WOW!...It really blows my mind when graphics can be tuned to fully 3D HD and even overcloking feature that can make gameplay much smoother! Will published a video about comparison between stock PSX cpu speed and emulated overclocking among PSX games with this emulator.
I had no idea duckstation existed or was a thing. In just the 15 minutes I tried it out, I can already tell it's a LOT better than psx 1.13... which was what I was using before. I'll be using Duckstation as my main PSX emulator now. Thanks for the heads-up video!
Cant believe you didnt cover PGXP integration, would of loved to see how well it works. (Apparently fixes the line warping and wobbling inherent in ps1 games)
It looks exactly as good as you'd hope. There are still a few issues (some PS1 games used polygons in place of 2D UI elements for some reason and they just never look right) but this is almost as good as it gets.
I just installed this thing and it blew my mind. I tried GT2 and it looks amazing. I never tried the Bleemcast back then, but I can only imagine it might have felt like this.
@ My PC runs DuckStation well upscaled to 1440p with Intel 4000 integrated graphics. Been playing Gran Turismo locked at 30 FPS. I only use nearest-neighbour texture filtering however with MSAA off.
Thanks for the help now I can hopefully play Final Fantasy V again while doing a solo character challenge, wanted to use the PS1 version because it’s the one I’m most familiar with ^^
EVERYONE: If you're into console emulation, this is the ULTIMATE PS1 emulator. WAY superior to anything out there and really easy to use, for anyone. Everything works to perfection for me. Never have PS1 games looked better and smoother, and ran more stable on PC. I've even activated the polygon precision enhancement and it makes all polygons rock solid. No more jiggling! Like literally never seen before in a PS1 game. Also, some great filtering options will make upscaled textures look naturally beautiful. Would LOVE for these guys to take on PS2 and PS3 emulation as well. GENIUSES. Lastly: Other PS1 emulators made me think my PC wasn't strong enough to emulate PS1 games at 4K, by running slow, stuttering and even freezing. DuckStation perfectly runs every game I want at 4K with 8X MSAA and all the great and practical enhancements turned on. (i7, GTX 1060 6gb, 32Gb RAM). No looking back from here.
This is the Apple of PSX emulation. Simple, clean, and completely walled off from proper customization with just a handful of upscaling, resolution, and post-processing choices. ePSXe is still leagues ahead of this because of the shader plugin options which completely change how games look in a way that a generic supersample can't.
I'm so glad this emulator is finally getting more recognition. I switched from Beetle to Duckstation something like 6 months ago and I sure ain't getting back. Great performance and great speed, best of both worlds. I personally prefer to play 1x resolution with SSAA and scanlines/CRT shader, feels more accurate to what it's supposed to look.
@Phil yup but it only smoothens the existing picture, whereas increasing resolution allows for greater detail. You'll notice for example that characters face texture appear way more detailed at higher resolution, whereas if you only apply SSAA it only gets blurry. Try for yourself, maybe with Tekken 3.
If anyone is looking to play old PS1 rhythm games, DuckStation is really the best experience you can get. With optimized settings you can get it to run with ridiculously low latency (I got ~2ms with my Celeron G4900).
Wow. I've been playing through chrono cross on my retropie with no graphic enhancements but a CRT shader. I've wanted to check out PGXP enhancement for a while so I spun up this emulator and the GUI is very straightforward. The character models are like night and day with pgxp geometry enhancement - the wobbles are gone! Great emulator!
I saw your video about duckstation and I immediately installed it on my pc. It is also available for Androids. I discovered something that everyone should be aware of, it can run Eboot games as well (well they are ps1 games after all but I thought its cool to mention it)

This looks great, I appreciate this very clean tutorial as well. I've given up trying to get epsxe to work on win10. Quick question that I don't think was covered in this video. Is there a quicksave/quickload feature? If so how do I use it/ what are the hotkeys?
It works on my own setup. Usually I would run PCSXR, but on my current system, that doesn't cut it. Came across this emulator by word of mouth, and on my Awow VT13 with Intel Graphics, the games I currently have run at full speed, with few exceptions. Right out of the box, too. Oh yeah: for best results, use a DualShock 4 gamepad.
Thanks for helping with the setup. The only issue I ran into was an error that popped up when trying to open the qt version the first time. It was a "run time" error. For anyone who has that issue, you can download the update directly from Microsoft so it is legit. A quick search and you will find it. Just search the error message and boom, you will find what you need. I started having issues epsxe, not sure why. After messing with it a bit I can say that prefer Duckstation to espxe. Thanks again for helping streamline the setup! It was much faster than if I had tinkered with it on my own.

That's the cost of being more accurate. You need at least a 1.5GHz CPU for the armv7 recompiler. DuckStation is optimized for 64-bit CPUs, and the requirements are slightly lower there. Any mid to high range phone from the last few years should not have any issues.

Dude this is great, thanks for making this! I was speedrunning spyro 2 on mednafen and was having all sorts of issues. I've been using Duckstation for 2 hours and its already way better!
Where u Can download PS1 games pls
Finally and PSX emulator that applies a Z-buffer!
Upscaling was always a a problem because it increased texture wobbling.
Being able to force 24bit colour and remove dither is also a nice bonus.
Depth/Z buffering isn't available yet, but I have been working on it and will merge soon. Just trying to improve the compatibility, it's sadly very hit and miss. But works very well in some games.
Damn ! Looks fantastic! BR looks like a Dreamcast Game
You rule for this. Had a random urge to play Road Rash again and now I can. Thanks.
I'm late to the party but I LOVE this emulator. I really enjoy playing some of my old favorites in 1080P. GREAT video!!!
Man, Bloody Roar 2 is one of those games that need more love
Somewhere, the child i was still hope that we will see a new bloody roar someday
I still cant believe that franchise is dead
The entire franchise needs more love!
bro thank you now i can play FF7 with my xbox controller and upscaled!!
thank you much love
Idk, there's something about the way they looked that has charm. Like SNES pixelart
exactly, people try to make games look hd and stuff while forgetting the charm, the nostalgia
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
For years i've been looking for a reliable ps1 emulator that actually works. Thank you so much!!!!
A PERFECT EMULATOR I CANNOT SCREAM THIS ENOUGH
Man oh man , that bloody roar 2 game looked cutely insane , never have I notice there were light on the background fence , like Malone said , Wow !
Is there any possibility that we will get a good ps2 emulator for android other than damon ps2 in the near future?
The only other one out right now is an emulator called PLAY! But it’s a long way off right now.
@@ETAPRIME Yeah play is not so good right now .I've tried it.
@@ETAPRIME pcsx2 might get an android port due to the retroarch core
There is a PS2 Emulator project called DobieStation which has future plans for an Android version.
We're not far, Damon ps2 would be good if it wasn't for sketchy dev
i have been waiting for something like this for years. thank you for informing me of this emulator because it has been the only ps1 emulator i could get to run the way i wanted it to i really appriciate this video man.
this is the bread and butter ETA Prime I sub for
Just using duckstation and it just...WOW!...It really blows my mind when graphics can be tuned to fully 3D HD and even overcloking feature that can make gameplay much smoother!
Will published a video about comparison between stock PSX cpu speed and emulated overclocking among PSX games with this emulator.
I love how we collectively decided that Dolphin's UI is a work of art and should be replicated (QT version).
Looks right at home in my KDE setup.. except for the fact that it ignores my QT theme
@@carlcouture1023 yep ive managed to get a good look at it myself now, vagrant story has never looked so good.
Huge miss on his part as I would not have played without it. But it works great, no wobbly edges AT ALL! (in games ive tried so far).
I just installed this thing and it blew my mind. I tried GT2 and it looks amazing. I never tried the Bleemcast back then, but I can only imagine it might have felt like this.
really great video man, I was wondering, is there a way to configure mouselook for the analog sticks in the settings like the PS2 emulator can?
@Fatbian L. no
@ My PC runs DuckStation well upscaled to 1440p with Intel 4000 integrated graphics. Been playing Gran Turismo locked at 30 FPS. I only use nearest-neighbour texture filtering however with MSAA off.
1 year later and I'm just about to add this to Launchbox alongside ePSXe. Thanks for the guide.
I will have to try this out! Thanks!
Thanks for the help now I can hopefully play Final Fantasy V again while doing a solo character challenge, wanted to use the PS1 version because it’s the one I’m most familiar with ^^
good luck
I discovered something that everyone should be aware of, it can run Eboot games as well (well they are ps1 games after all but I thought its cool to mention it)
Now we just need a better PS2 emulator!
For sure, pcsx2 really lacks enhancements like xBR and performance could be much better.
Haha retroarch got pcsx2 i got it on xbox series x got no problem to play some games with 4k60fps 😄
@@LayerZlayer2000 pcsx2 is also on PC, my dude.
It originated here.
@@vicariouschism86 I am sure he was just making a statement on how it works better on xbox x
@@Nitolordgrave it doesn't though.
PC runs them better since the emulator has existed on the platform for years and the one on Xbox is brand new.
Been Using Duckstation For About 2 Weeks It Is Fantastic,
ETA: "Upscale PS1 games to 4k"
Me: Cries in Intel 620 graphics
Laughs in Intel UHD 630 graphics
Also GTX 1050 (mobile version)
laughs in Adreno 405
the Intel HD 620 actually isn't half bad for laptop GPUs though, it's able to play Dolphin and some Wii U emulation at full speed.
Laughs in Adreno 618 ;v
Laughs in Adreno 640 and Intel UHD 630 ;-;
I'm so nostalgic, thanks man I appreciate, my dad will be so happy to see these games again
Heyyy finally something new. ePSXe last update was long time ago.
It is so dated! It's about time we get something new!
It works, but having to close out to change settings is rather annoying.
I've never really done much emulation. Used duckstation to play one of my favorites from 2001 Megaman Legends 2 and upscaled its so nice. Having a blast. Thanks for the tutorial :)
in Portuguese the name of this emulator is: Estação Pato
🦆
Chamo-o de "PatoStation"
Estación Pato in Spanish
DuckStation in English...
Been using this since before it supported joypads and it's grown amazingly in such a small time. It's my fave right now.
How to have good eumualtion speed:
Step 1. Vulkan
no......a lot of emulators run worse with vulkan....like ppsspp...
Well it always ran better for me.
D3D11 is actually faster than the Vulkan rendered, if only by a little. Still it's a big improvement over OpenGL, but if you're on windows use D3d.
@@randomgameday2902 It depends on the host GPU mostly. If you have an ATI card, go with Vulkan, if you have an Nvidia card, go with OpenGL, if you have Intel integrated graphics, may God help you.
@@elimalinsky7069 I use ppsspp and epsxe with intel hd 4000 graphics and it plays just fine. Don't know about this emulator, though.
I still rate FPSE on Android, which works flawlessly on my shield. I bought the emulator about 9 years ago to run PS1 Roms on my HTC Desire S.
everything runs great except for my audio, for some reason it sounds all distorted and choppy.
I am also facing the same situation
Bloody Roar looked amazing on my laptop!!! I'm surprised how good it looked. It easily looked like a late life PS2 game. I'm definitely downloading this emulator. I can't wait to see how good Medievil looks on this. It is my favorite PS1 game. And see how summons on FF VII look. Cool stuff!!! Thanks!
Can't wait till they add a ray tracing button.
finally a PSX emulator with the option to Vulkan, no need for plugins, and is looking like Dolphin...what else I need
You should've checked the PXGP option...
I just scared my wife. I actually said, out loud, "HOLY SH*T" ... It. Looks. AMAZING! I have not been this excited about PS1 games since I found CFW for my PSP back in 2010 and could play PS1 games on a portable! Thanks for this information! :)
I ran this with the settings shown and used Destruction Derby 2 as my test game. Running i7-9600k with 16GB RAM and a GTX1660ti.
This looks great, I appreciate this very clean tutorial as well. I've given up trying to get epsxe to work on win10. Quick question that I don't think was covered in this video. Is there a quicksave/quickload feature? If so how do I use it/ what are the hotkeys?
This works just fine, tried playing Medievil and this is beyond good, zero lag whereas with Epsx I exprienced it, thank you!
Replaced ePSXe with this about a month back. Haven’t looked back.
Doesn't do .GME files.
Let me know when it supports PBP. I like this emulator. It seems really good, but I don't see myself replacing my whole collection again.
Just go to GitHub, mate
Thanks for helping with the setup. The only issue I ran into was an error that popped up when trying to open the qt version the first time. It was a "run time" error. For anyone who has that issue, you can download the update directly from Microsoft so it is legit. A quick search and you will find it. Just search the error message and boom, you will find what you need. I started having issues epsxe, not sure why. After messing with it a bit I can say that prefer Duckstation to espxe. Thanks again for helping streamline the setup! It was much faster than if I had tinkered with it on my own.
when ETA PRIME plays GTA ------ GTA PRIME
HA!
I'm just pleased DuckStation supports save states.
RabbitStation......DuckStation.........RabbitStation.........Duckstation....FIRE!
Don't forget the new PS2 emulator - DobbyStation
@@SRC267 Dobbystation is a free station!
im actually not downloading the emulator, but you talk so well that you managed to make me watch the whole thing
Just got my first pc with a 1660 ti and came back to actually try the thing, thanks for the tutorial
Legend of Dragoon plays well? It's been almost 20 years since the last time I played, my disc 4 at the time was broken.
Just tested this out last night and the disc swaps and everything looked fine / sound was nice in LoD
@@ken7786 thanks man. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

yes, it's a very good emulator, updated almost daily. I love the very simple memory card management. only the android version is still much slower than epsxe (on old hardware where you have 100% of psx speed with duckstation you have 50% of speed)
That's the cost of being more accurate. You need at least a 1.5GHz CPU for the armv7 recompiler. DuckStation is optimized for 64-bit CPUs, and the requirements are slightly lower there. Any mid to high range phone from the last few years should not have any issues.
