  • In an effort to manage procurement and ongoing maintenance expenses for a crucial component on the battlefield, the U.S. military has decided to adopt the M142 "High Mobility Artillery Rocket System" (HIMARS). This system is a lighter, wheeled version derived from the successful Cold War-era Vought M270 "Multiple Launch Rocket System" (MLRS). The M270, introduced in 1983, consisted of the tracked M993 Carrier Vehicle (Bradley IFV) coupled with the traversable M269 Loader Launcher Module (LLM). Operated by a crew of three, the system could launch various types of warhead munitions up to 40 miles away from its twin, six-round mounted launcher. All twelve rockets could be launched from the module in under 40 seconds. Production of the M270 ceased in 2003, with approximately 1,300 units manufactured and distributed to various U.S.-allied nations, including the United Kingdom, South Korea, and France.
