This thing had the most profound impact of anything in my entire life. My thalassophobia developed from this. I regularly have dreams of trying to stay out of the ocean away from these things. I never even finished the game for nearly 10 years because of these encounters. It was the most terrifying feeling be 6 years old, cruising around and running into this monstrosity. Immediately went for the GameCube power button to turn it off, couldn’t even press it the first 3 times in my panic. Took a long, long time to muster the courage to beat them the first time…
This is one of the reasons that I could never sail in Wind Waker by myself. Sure, there are only certain places that you can find the Big Octo, and sure, you can easily tell that there's a Big Octo if a bunch of sea gulls are flying in a circle around one spot, but I don't usually pay much attention to where I'm going or to the gulls in Wind Waker, and I forget, I'm about to see The Legend of Zelda version of The Kraken.
shit if you ask me that's normal size octopus in real life or squid it's not even twice times the size of a pirate ship and its barely size of a whole ship tbh.
@@caseyfreshman1202 Really? I was just talking about that part. Did he spit you to a random spot on the map or to a square directly between the two islands? (Seeing as how other squares on the map have enemies that you would be unable to defend yourself against due to not having the Boomerang. Sharks can be dodged easily but the Seahats are another matter)
I got this game when I was very little and was scared of the bad weather while sailing and one time I saw this thing out my window and then experienced it in the ocean it scarred me and it’s still creepy
I remember when I got this for Christmas when I was wayyyyy younger, and getting caught by this thing without any sort of self-defense. Scared the everliving shit out of me. As well as when I saw the Ghost Ship for the very first time. I was on the water at the time, and the Ghost Ship was less than 50 feet away. I paused the game, freaking out, saved, and quit. Lol.
@@graciebastard9805 LOL I DID THE SAME THING!!! Except for i couldent handle the intense ambience of ganons curse on the sea. I like went sailing for like 2 minutes before i was like yea no this is too scary
Oh gosh, when you said that, it reminded me of the game Sinister Squidward. It’s such a disturbing game, Markiplier played it, pretty cool. If you’re a kid though, don’t watch it.
It's not so much the Big Octo itself is scary, but the music that plays during the fight. It is SO effective at getting your adrenaline going, and it makes you feel like you fucked up getting caught in the situation. I'm a grown man and these fights still scare me lol
I remember thinking these guys were awesome when I was a kid. I actually didn’t wanna defeat any of them cause I somehow liked the idea of giant monsters in the sea
They look intimidating but they're pretty easy to defeat, and I'm at the point where I actively hunt them every playthrough. (The easiest one even gives you double magic meter) There is one time I'm careful to avoid them however. Going from Dragon Roost to Forest Haven for the first time, since I don't have the Boomerang, and thus, if I were to encounter the one just south of Dragon Roost Island, all I can do is wait till he sucks me in and spits me... some random spot on the map. With the Wind's Requiem I can still get to Forest Haven but I could potentially encounter enemies along the way, and without Boomerang, arrows, or bombs, I'd be defenseless against them. I've never actually encountered him without the Boomerang yet but I REALLY don't want to.
Big same! Thankfully, for all the times I played Wind Waker, I never encountered the one on Fire Mountain going from Dragon Roost Island to the Forest Haven. When I found out about the meaning of the seagulls especially, I would actively make sure I steer cleer, but I used to not know that.
I hunted the first one on purpose just to get a magic meter upgrade, but the second encounter? I just ran into a flock of seagulls that is gathering around then there goes.
@@Panroles Nope! You can actually end up stumbling into the Big Octo at Fire Mountain while going to Forest Haven from Dragon Roost for the first time. It's quite a ways off the beeline path, so it shouldn't happen as long as you don't steer off the path.
I saw that entrance the first time and felt fear over a video game. It’s not the octo but the dang water that scared me and still does. I mean yea it scared me too but that water...ugh doesn’t help that swirl is a real thing in our waters too.
I see you are at Diamond Steppe with the ghost ship present. I remember trying to see if the ship would run into me while fighting the octo, but it's path was completely different
After this monster appeared, I developed a fear of cold water for some reason. Every time I would feel cold water in the shower or in the beach or wherever, I would get flashbacks of this thing. Horrific. It’s gotten better since I was a kid, but I thought it was the strangest thing. I somehow associated cold water with this so strongly that this would appear in my head upon feeling cold water.
i only ever found 1 about 3 times around the same spot in the original gamecube version. first time had no idea what to do (didnt have any gear to kill it anyways). i tried hunting it after getting the cannon thinking that was what u had to use....ya that didn't work well at all and I gaveup cause it was hard to re-find consistently. I only ever thought there was just 1 in a region of the map spawning at random intervals....I really did explore the map and never found any of the others much less the map of their locations. I find that pretty annoying in hindsight cause my biggest complaint was having nothing to do in the ocean. I would challenge anyone to defeat this thing without the boomerang...exponentially harder on the gamecube anyways and I found everything minus 1 or two things stupidly easy in this game.

If You Ran Of Bombs For Breaking Into Jabu's Cave The Game Would Just Make Your Boat Go To The Middle Of The Worlpool Faster
SAME WITH THE TORNADO But If You Did Not Have The Bow The Game Would Make You Get Sucked Into The Tornado FASTER
SO WITH THE OCTO IM PRETTY SURE ALMOST ALL OF US BEAT DRAGON ROOST AND WENT TO FOREST HAVEN JUST TO GET CAUGHT BY THE OCTO AT THE VALCANO AND WE DID NOT HAVE THE BOOMERANG
AND THEN WE HAD TO WAIT 9 YEARS TO GET SUCKED UP THEN SPIT OUT
so next time when at the valcano pull out the telescope then look for the flock of seagulls when you find it DO NOT RUN INTO IT THAT'S HOW YOU GET CAUGHT BY THE OCTO
