I would definitely not file that piston there's probably a hairline crack in it from when it dropped and broke the chunk off that could disintegrate in the engine and destroy everything
I'd put that in my daily. I had a 350 in a 79 1/2 ton 2wd that we put together with a skirt missing on a piston and put close to 200,000 miles it. We had plenty of issues along the way..the piston skirt wasn't one of them though..ya never know🤷
You have to admire the resourcefulness of people 30 miles from a part store in the middle of ND SD KN NE on a Sunday , putting their daily driver back together . Good work on shift supports!
Remembering my grandfather, served in the pacific as an engineer. He made a fresh water pool for the men by damming a stream on an island, the officers banned all the enlisted from using it after they found it. He bulldozed it once they did that, if the men couldn't use it on one would... hell of a guy, taught me how to fish.
Absolutely... People need to remember that it's not just a holiday so they can have the day off from work. So many young men, and some women died and a lot of them were only 18 years old and had just graduated from High School. That's something that is really hard to comprehend...
25 years ago, I use to work at an automotive shop where we did small repairs and detailing. We employed a few older retired gentleman, like MoJo, to do odds and ends like be an extra hand, pickup parts, move cars around, answer phones, etc. As a young man in my early 20's, those gentlemen taught me a lot about hard work, cars, relationships, and life in general. Most of those gentlemen have since passed away, however, those days really helped me become a man and I really miss them. Thank you Ron, John, Terry, AL, Jim, and Gilbert.
When I was 14 a buddy and I made one motor out of three (Chevy 350) and we had no clue what we were doing. We didn't buy anything new for it used what we had. He put in his pickup and drove the heck out of it. I moved away about five years later and that thing was still running. We used a Chilton manual and a crap load of silicone. I love it when you do these videos because this is what happens every day in small town America!👍
Happy Memorial Day, Thank You for Your Service to Our County, Especially to Those that Paid the Ultimate Sacrifice. Rest In Peace Dad, Love You Sir. It’s good to have a Mortske Repair Vidja to watch, gonna be a Good Day. I’ll Catch You on the Next One. Keep It Safe Out There Sir
Have a safe memorial Day. Especially to those men and women who gave their lives for this Country, Thank you.. Thx Mortske for this video, I enjoyed it.
I like watching you get them to the point somebody can easily finish them off. You do the grunt work, engine, some brakes, etc and the other guy gets the glory. 😂
You and Duff would look so cool going down the road in that mullett-mobile. Chain link steering wheel, foot print gas pedal, fuzzy dice, Cragers with white letters out, headers, and flexi-hose!
I just heard that about a 79 Chevy k10 Scottsdale running the factory 305 2bbl and my response is yeah and the minute you try breaking those tires loose it's gonna spider crack the ring gear with pinion chunks and then separate the th350/np203 full time differential torque coupler lol and then it will not drive and I'm not convinced that is a 79 Chevy k10 Scottsdale running a factory 305 2bbl
Never thought 350ci would ever be scarce as there getting ! Back in the day I could fine in the news paper 70's running impala /caprice/ WAGONS etc for 75$ to100$ find and purchase in a hour...drive them home do the engine swap all in one day. ALL MAKEs AND MODELS....Did many many many ...Man those were the days 😊 Love your chanel + Duff the Doggie...Good work
I'd like to see more motor building stuff. Doing the 'will it run' videos is great, but a lot of it boils down to your FASTEC essentials; this video, your blower 350 and a couple of the older engine videos were awesome! The El Camino is the perfect ratty muscle car I'd never want to own! Happy Memorial Day and thank you for putting your heart and soul into what you do. Definitely geared towards the average guy, no one is doing that anymore.
Enjoyed the "Frankenstein rebuild" of the smallblock...she seemed to run pretty good. I love the simplicity of the old stuff. At least the average guy can work on it. Thanks Mortske! Hope you have a great Memorial Day.
I was hoping to see the mullet and watch this ride getting some air, guess I'll have to tune in next week! I find it interesting to watch you and Mojo piecing these engines together & getting them to roar back to life, keep up the good work...
El Camino’s are the car you don’t need, but want! On paper they make sense, but they don’t really make sense practically. Maybe I’m not making sense? I don’t need one, but I want one.
Just tore down a froze-up 350 for a 383 stroker project in similar condition and boy, did my elbow start sympathetically aching watching you go after those stuck pistons!
Yeah, there kinda was a 2 barrel Vette. 1984 CrossFire injection had two single barrel throttle bodies. I have one, and they only made 205 HP and 290 TQ. Still not a bad car, handles excellently, fun to drive. The CrossFire is easy to fix, if you know what you're doing. And you can port the stupid tiny-port aluminum intake and gain 20 HP or so. I've ported my intake, it helped a bit, but I probably need to remove more aluminum, just scared of holing the damn thing. I also upgraded to the 1986 fuel pump for more pressure, and need to install the adjustable fuel pressure regulator I bought one day....LOL! Take care, Mortske! Oh, and thanks for sending out the can coozie, matches, banner, and signed flyer I ordered. Good stuff, man. I'll be back for more schtuff!
My cousin in like 93 carb swapped out a 82 Chevy Camaro z28 305 crossfire fuel injection and it was a gm 2bbl 79 Chevy Impala intake manifold distributor and cam setup in decent shape but considering it wouldn't run when he got it and drove it from the next weekend till 3 years later when he traded it for his second mercury Capri a 84 mercury Capri 302 2v automatic t top car
Holy crap that’s seems like a heck of a deal for the roller! I wish I lived closer. 😑 Hope you and Duff are enjoying your Memorial Day and get plenty of samiches and treats. 🍻

Nice to see you guys diving into saving some engines, working with what you have hanging around is great, recycling at it's finest. Many years ago I purchased 6 small block core motors from a school district bus shop, if they had a motor issue they would buy a goodwrench long block and swap it out. I ended up with enough decent parts to build a couple good engines out of the deal to keep my rigs going for a while.
I would encourage you, I would encourage you more please, because there's nothing wrong with being frugal and watching your budget. I enjoyed this rebuild thank you for showing this to us.
Good show today Thomas I throughly enjoyed it. You don't run across many 72 model engines that have never been apart. I'd like to to have a LS I could swap into my hot rod for long trips then put the big block back in for weekend racing lol.
Mr. Mojo rising, El Camino, the mullet of cars. It's great when you have spare parts you can use or eliminate. Almost brought back old memories seeing those flames coming from a motor in Mortske garage 😊
The smoke: "Oh, that little guy...i wouldn't worry about that little guy" 😂 Don't ever let anyone think budget rebuilds are a bad thing, i bet this engine could get another 50 to 100,000 miles out of it. Maybe more. Good job Mort, Chin and Mojo. 👍👍🔧
1:00:57 blimey,,,I'm very impressed. Someone who actually realises that you must keep checking rotation of the crank as each cap is brought up to torque....✌️👍🇬🇧
Don't know about the 67, but I have had 3 65 El Caminos, and they all had factory air shocks. For your safety, please put exhaust manifolds on before firing an engine. A tiny fuel leak can turn really bad. Thanks for another great video Tom!
Great episode! And you just did more for the environment than Gretta ever will.. That engine is a great example of "make it run". Price as always is spot on.. Thanks for taking us along for the ride
Hey Mort, I ordered a banner two weeks ago, I really love the picture of you and Puddin , thanks for signing that. Forgot to mention it yesterday thanks again.
Always glad to see Mojo in your videos. That guy is probably FULL of knowledge of things of years past! He is a great asset to the channel, I've seen it from time to time in the videos. There is nothing like a Mortske rebuild.....you should do one or two, now and then!
In the late 70s worked for a Chevy dealer. One of my mechanic friends was working on a 78,z28 with a engine miss. Disassembled the 350 and found a hole in one piston, used a piston from old warranty claim motor. My friend did not like doing that but the owner said do it, so he did. The motor ran good. FYI it was green/white stripes pretty cool car. I detailed it and it looked amazing. Car sold in two days.
Mortske you are the man , a Monday will it run , or wont it . We know the answer so you pull the engine and find out why ? Thank you for the time and effort you put into doing a re build with what you have in stock and sure enough it purrs like a kitten . God Bless you and the crew , MoJo , Chin and the Duff Dog ,and a big wave from me ,Stuart in Canada ..
Always enjoy a good budget friendly build and I kinda hate painted engines in old vehicles!! Never seen Mojo move so fast before while rebuilding those heads lol
Hey Mort, another great video. Good to see Mojo this week. The 350 ran really good especially since you used all old parts. Again I really enjoyed this video to. Have a good week.
Cool double vision fast action shots in the engine bay. You and your clone. love the 70s and 60s GM small block rebuild. Doesn’t matter what vehicle they’re in.
I'm working on my daughter's orange '69 SS el Camino. It sat 15 yrs. in my mother's barn and then I sold it to my friend and he let it set 8 years in his shop. Short story, he passed away and left it to my daughter. Just before Christmas '23, I got it started. It started and died about 5 times and #5 cyl exhaust vale was rusty and stuck open, broke off, shattered the piston and knocked a 1 1/2" x 4 inch chunk out of the cylinder wall. luckily, it wasn't the original 396. I ended up putting a rebuilt '72 truck 402 short block in it. Starting to put all new brake system on, now.
@@MortskeRepair the tail lights and grill was not the same. the 69 had a bow tie in the center. I notice yours had missing parts. it was also a 68 grill!
i remember doing a swap around . and some young me. was just about two mix all the parts up. and some youngs brother did not get mad. miss that guy. he gave me the class on why you don't do that.
Perfect car for your blown motor. We put an L88 in a 1970 elcamino with nitrous. It turned 10.86 in a qtr mile run. When my brother shifted into drive he hit the nitrous button. It twisted the driveshaft in three pieces. He coasted through the traps at 10.86. Can't remember what the MPH was. That was the only time we raced it. With your blower motor and some 16in slicks you be a bad man.😊
my first car was a 1974 El Camino. Kinda surprised to see the 1969 with the exact same steering wheel. I still have a lot of love for the ElCos prior to the 1980 downsize
The Mortske rebuild sounds good! That's incredible from 2 basically junk engines. That's for sure making the most of what you have. And I can bet money it'd still pull a sick one wheel peel in the mullet machine
Wish it had a title, I’d be a player for that, Kentucky is a nightmare to get a registration on a car with no title. As usual another Mortske home run video, keep it up!
I enjoyed this one, you showed something that I person with a bit of skill and maybe a couple friends could do on low funds, you are right, could have just as much fun running this vintage, pieced together motor as they could with a new motor…
Enjoy watching you guys! I live in the same Town as Ole Puddin, I usually learn stuff from you guys. Sometimes it’s how to do it but sometimes it’s how not to.😉
I give the right of way to El Caminos. Terrific cool classic cars worthy of restoration. You put it back on the road and it needs someone to go the rest of the way with it. Thanks for posting.
We’ll basically watch whatever you post, Sir Morticus. You make awesome content for your videos. Thank you!! No pun intended on calling you “Sir Morticus” !!😏
I would definitely not file that piston there's probably a hairline crack in it from when it dropped and broke the chunk off that could disintegrate in the engine and destroy everything
Guess we will find out!
I'd put that in my daily. I had a 350 in a 79 1/2 ton 2wd that we put together with a skirt missing on a piston and put close to 200,000 miles it. We had plenty of issues along the way..the piston skirt wasn't one of them though..ya never know🤷
Seems to have ran very well...
Small block chev's can do amazing things...
Even run well with a piece of the piston MIA.
Maybe, maybe not. 💁🏼♀️

With your blower motor and some 16in slicks you be a bad man.😊
Cool
my first car was a 1974 El Camino.
Keep saving those 350s.thanks John from Arizona
I enjoyed this one, you showed something that I person with a bit of skill and maybe a couple friends could do on low funds, you are right, could have just as much fun running this vintage, pieced together motor as they could with a new motor…
Cool Elco...thanks for the Memorial Mortske Monday! Much appreciation to all involved! 🐾🍺
Our pleasure!
Enjoy watching you guys!
I live in the same Town as Ole Puddin, I usually learn stuff from you guys. Sometimes it’s how to do it but sometimes it’s how not to.😉
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Thank you!
@@MortskeRepair You’re very welcome!! Thank you for the great content you continue to post.
