Neill Blomkamp's RoboCop Returns: What Happened to this Unmade Movie?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 кві 2024
- After failed flirtations with Halo, Alien, and an adaptation of the sci-fi novel The Gone World, director Neill Blomkamp seemed like the poster child for canned sci-fi films. But Alien was not the only iconic 80s sci-fi franchise that Blomkamp was tied to. In July of 2018, he signed on to direct RoboCop Returns, a direct continuation of the original cyberpunk classic. What happened to this Unmade Robocop sequel, which would have been done in the style of Paul Verhoeven's classic original, and featured the return of Peter Weller in the title role?

You can never top the original Robocop, Total Recall or Space Troopers, they are already perfect movies
You mean Starship Troopers?
But you can make something JUST or ALMOST as good... he's the guy for it.
@@JestersDeadUK he is woke trash, like they all are
@@TyyTheFlyGuy yeah, i must have been.high as a kite writing this

Ridley Scott may have directed the first “Alien” film, but he wasn’t its “creator.” That distinction goes to writers Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
The true creator of Alien is most certainly one H. R. Giger, notwithstanding DO'B's 50's pulp rehash script, an sir ridley's keen eye fer detail...
H.R.Geiger created the "Aliens" completely aside from the later IP. It was originally a series of paintings that where done as a showing., not a fleshed out story or anything like the sort. Later viewings of these art pieces inspired the movies that came of them.
No mention of the 2023 Robocop: Rogue City video game, starring Peter Weller?
I don’t remember it
It is brand new, pretty good too!@@Mr_Ashley
Heck yeh - waited 35yrs fer this game (sorry Ocean!) an now I'm happily skillmaxxd on NG+...
Weller's bin doin' rerun circuit duties fer las 10yrs, so gettin' him back on board was prob tha greatest no-brainer in vidgame history.
A robocop remake would work well if it went with the same tone as the dredd reboot
As I didn't read 2000AD Progs in the 70s (Marvel mostly), the tone of Sly's adap suited me jus fine...Urban nails it in Garland's lo-fi versh mind u - unambitious an limited as it was.
Nothing will ever top the first Robocop!
Perfection, by definition is unsurpassable.
One additional fact; Peter Weller was eyed to reprise the role once again. As far as Chappie is concerned; it is a Short Circuit remake with redesign of Ed-209 in the film if you watch and pay attention to the story.
This and the aliens movie he never got to make would have been amazing I think. The guy just has that kinda style that lends itself to this type of movie. Honestly though I think he could also make one hell of a Transformers movie too.
Can't be any worse than the dreck TF moovees we DID get..
At least we have the new very well written and fun to play RoboCop video game. It is pretty much Part 2.5.
Waited 35 yrs fer that game (sorry, Ocean!)...gleefully maxxed out on NG+ now...
*STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!* 🤖
We needed a sequel to District 9 wtf?
This
I want a Chappie 2
@@iswearimcreativeproduction7604More Die Antwoord seems unlikely in light of recent allegations, u gotta admit tho?
@@FUKAOKEVERSE oh for sure! They don’t necessarily need to be in it but I was excited at the prospect of Ninja or Yolandi being in an ALIEN film directed by Blomkamp. I still need to watch all his shorts and Gran Turismo which I hear is pretty solid. I didn’t watch his found footage horror film either but I heard it’s trash
Blomkamp would've been the ideal director 10 years ago
But ever since District 9, his other movies failed to have the same impact
Especially Gran Turismo, where he decided to act as a director for hire
shut up, nobody cares
Gran Turismo is actually very successful. With incredibly positive reviews.
Shut up! You act like he's going to be another M Night Shyamalan

Elysium and Grand Tourismo were great.
man Neil is so underrated. think he is perfect for the 80 type of movies.
I will never understand the hate for Robocop 2...
Agreed!
RoboCop 2 was a well grounded movie. Better than Robocop 3 and the failed Remake
Agreed too!
@JoBloOriginals ḍo you think a Robocop vs Terminator movie is a good idea 💡
@Jose-se9pu, me neither! It's not as great as the first one, but is still a decent & memorable sequel, in my opinion. The hate for Robocop 2 makes about as much sense as the hate for Ghostbusters 2, which is no sense.
Abe Forsythe is also a fitting choice
Has anyone seen DOWN UNDER and LITTLE MONSTERS?
They're funny and chaotic
Both good movies
Little Monsters = a dull XP fer Urs Truly
OG Robocop 1 2 3 were cool 😎
Prime Directives seemed surprisingly good to me, quite in line with the first movie
Duder, fukn Robo2 predicted to the letter modern Cali an NYC...thos 200 directives are the template WOKE user manual, ffs
Robo2 is really very good and it has found its audience. Love it when the evil kid says, "Dying sucks, but you know that don't you..." or something like that...
Yeh, between Robo2 an The Good Son, 90s cinema reinvented Damien kidz
I'm still so pissed that didn't happen >:c at least we got Rogue City eventually
To match the original, you need 4 things:
1- Satire of our current time; or else why bother with the message
2- Robocop being programmed; showing the world's corruption
3- Murphy overcoming that programming; showing the persistence of the human condition
4- An uncompromising vision that is not restricted by rating, hence hard R; so that the story gets told with nothing getting in the way of the director's vision.
Lol s/o bin bingeing on *Robodoc...*
If u add into the mix a totally objective NON-usa (of the 80s) perspective, in the form of eurotrash art-porn meister PV, then ur there 100%.
A modern-day equivalent take on Bidenomics and WOKE prob wudnt be so funny mind u - or wud it?
How many legacy sequels has Neil claimed to have been producing?
Robocop Reactivated would be a great title
The only reason needed to bring back an old analogue-tech Robocop would be to battle the new one because it went bad.- or was hijacked. Someone left its network connection switched on without security..
Or something like that.
poor neil blompkamp
I really wish this film had got off the ground 😢
So do we!
Just because you say his name a few times does not make this a video about Blomkamp's Robocop. This was more like 11 minutes of loose Robocop history.
Say his name FIVE times...i dare u 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 🍭🍭🍭
I thought this was being narrated by Mary Jo Pehl aka Pearl Forrester herself ❤
Yo what if he did a movie off cyberpunk 2077??? That’d be dope
I think Im one of the few people that feel this way, but robocop 2 wasnt that bad. The biggest thing it has going against it is that its compared to one of the best movies of all time.
I have a soft spot for it
It's actually way better than 'not bad' but was unfairly dammed by comparison an it's proximity to the OG
Robocop 2 was a good movie. I don't know why people knock it so much. It's not up there with the first movie. It's much less cerebral than the first, but it's still a really good movie.
Robocop 3, now that's a real stinker. It's like Santa Claus conquers the Martians bad.
Not cerebral tho...? I mean, it's *there* but u jus gotta look a bit harder, right?
This narration isn't A.I., is it?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The remake of Robocop was actually really good. I don't give a fuck what anyone says.
I love the original! It's amazing. But the remake added to it. It made the movie more current. It really was an update. It didn't take anything away from the original... It just updated it. It fleshed out the character a bit more. I totally enjoyed it.
Whilst I don't esp hate it, I'd argue that it's inability to deviate or extrapolate much upon the OG makes it kinda vestigial.
The main reason it failed imvho tho, was the redesign of the armour, which failed to capture the essence of inner conflict/inhumanity the way Bottin's did.
Narrator's voice is same pitch at nails on chalkboard.
I'm a huge fan of District 9, but I've pretty much hated everything else Neil has done since.
Thort CHAPPIE was dope, Elysium sorta okay....Demonic = garbage.
The original can't be beat because the money people who own the IP don't understand that the original was satiring THEM!
If u watch Robodoc, it seems they mostly profess to have 'got it' but were so narcissistic an hi on Reaganomics that they lapped up Verhoeven's middle finger anyway(!)
👍👍👍🎥
The latest video game Robocop Rogue City, is so good. You really feel like Robocop. It even has the thudding footsteps, which you can turn down if you're commie!
Freakin' commees an ther *soft shoe shuffles*
I like Neil but we don’t need another Robocop reboot. Leave that franchise alone. He should do something else. The only way Zi would want to see another Robocop movie is if it was R rated with the same grit and seriousness that Robocop 1 and 2 had.
This wouldn’t be a reboot. It would be a sequel.
@@deeacosta2734 fine but there is no need to retcon the second movie since that was good movie. You can retcon the third movie. That movie was bad. Who would play Louis? She was a great character. Maybe Olivia Thirlby from Dredd might be a good choice.
That IS what he was going to do with it.
Agreed. Continue the story. Don't rewrite it. Show me a story I haven't seen before.
@@biguy617 You played Rouge City?
The owners of the Alien and RoboCop franchises screwed up royally by not giving Blomkamp a movie. He would have done justice to both but now the actors are all too old.
Weaver an Weller were already well over 60, so u cud argue that's past due a convincing character revival anyway tbf.
@@FUKAOKEVERSE I'd have been very surprised if Weller was involved in this as he didn't do Robocop 3 back in the day.
@@jamesatkinsonja Poss, but init he sed he wudnt do Robo2 without PV, then soon relented ($$$) - also, the past 10yrs he's bin milking the rerun/convention circuit waxing all things Robocop AND then did sterling V.O. work on Rogue City...so... never say never?
Yeah Robocop 3 felt like a cartoon designed to sell toys especially with the whole robot ninja/jet pack stuff lmao smfh
Sadly, RC3 cannot be UNseen once u'v seen it
People didn't like Chappie? The hell up with that? And no, we don't need a new Robocop. We need new material, not recycled.
CHAPPIE was a dopamine hit imvho - Ninja fukn slays it from outa nowhere
@@FUKAOKEVERSE I mean, Die Antword liked him. He's gotta be cool.
I hated we got cheated twice in him developing a Aliens sequel then a possibly great Robocop sequel/reboot.
Yup, lotsa talk, little action.
Maybe I'm being harsh but the fact Blomkamp hyped up another legacy sequel only to not produce anything does make me believe the stories he only had an outline for the Alien film, not a full script.
@jamesatkinsonja I mean, you definitely could be right, but I wonder if Ridley had a lot to do with it not coming to fruition either. I only say that because both of his last two films in the franchise were very underwhelming in the series and made you wonder if he might have sabotaged that because having a direct Aliens sequel that doesn't only see the return of Ripley and Newt but Hicks as well.
@@micksawyer1112 Rid never gas bout Cameron's sequel characters, he was likely protecting his own films' legacy by vetoing 'Aliens2/Alien 5'...which makes me wonder whether Romulus ports more of his preq stuff than the marketing is letting on (ie. not jus Ash from tha OG but David+Engineer"stuff too)?
@FUKAOKEVERSE that's exactly what I suspected over the years, especially how he doesn't consistently Aliens as cannon interestingly enough I did here the new one does acknowledge the Aliens cannon as well.
Blomkamp is so over rated. Crowing about an Alien job you never had in the first place, is as cringe as playing 'mein host' in a Batman film you're not even in! Lol.
Cringe ain't even tha word...
Can somebody give Neil Blomkamp a cool franchise to direct, dude keeps trying, and they just don’t happen… maybe some day
Who don't luv a tryhard tho, eh?
i'm sick of hearing about this neil blomkamp. he always supposed to make a sequel to some 80's sci fi franchise movie, it never materializes, and people act like it's a fucking tragedy. then he goes to another franchise and fails there. why should i care about this guy?
amazon will fail like everybody else.
one of the best movies ever made, havent seen nothing (and dont wanna) after robocop 3
wish I *hadn't* cn RC3 tbh
Anything bloomcamp I want !!!!
Demonic too?
WTF happened to Neil Blompkamp’s unmade Alien 5 movie?
Was another video!
Neil Blomkamp doesn't have much to offer nowadays
And a sequel to DISTRICT 9 wouldn't help at all
Demonic an GT are studio hack efforts
I wonder what he could have done with Terminator?
Likely another hack effort with nothing esp nu to say fer itself
Two things Hollywood will never learn:
1)Stop making reboots, remakes, or reimaginings of classic movies. Often, those films being remade are already perfect or damn near it so you’re never going to catch lightning in a bottle again.
2)If you are going for something in a classics film franchise, then, make it a follow up sequel. People are far less harsh on something as a stand alone than something getting compared to a classic.
Much like Randy in Scream giving simple rules for horror films, there’s simple rules for these classic films with reboots too.
Um... but every rule has a...
*Evil Dead Cat People King Kong Pet Semetary The Thing The Fly Rabid Suspiria*
Blomkamp is overrated, he's been riding the one half-decent film he made for 15 years.
Chappie is better than District 9.
Chappie is hugely underrated.
It's biggest problem in the UK is that its a brand of dog food here.
@@scottanderson2458 CHUMMIE wuda bin worse tho
Paul Verhoeven is a genius. If you're not one, just back off and stick with the originals. Simple.
Capitalism musta passed u by...kinda ironic, eh?
Would you trust some Hollywood suits to do another 80s/90s classic?
Just another glossy point break dirty dancing Conan alien....
Put it in the hands of a Japanese or Korean team they'll know not to use modern cameras and lighting with 80% cgi.
Og robocop had that gritty dirty dangerous look and feel like you could smell the Detroit crime
But Hollywood needs their own people to get the glory artistry and value be dammed
8 minutes in, and the video finally gets to the point… and literally says nothing
Stop trying to remake Verhoeven movies. That's number 1. Now: you wanna make a sequel for the original Robocop? Use Peter Weller (as an actor/mocap, even if it's just the voice.... no AI voice nonsense) AND find a way to include Verhoeven and Neumeier's Corporate Wars script. But most importantly: get 300 Million dollars to work with, WITHOUT poisoning it w ESG Agenda into it (Robocop already has plenty of 'politics' infused within it. Ya know: the kind of 'politics' that really matter= Cyperpunk dystopian stuff).
MoCap a limber 70 yr-old...no brainer!
Robo2 didn't exactly riff on 80s U.S. PolitiX like it's predecessor did, but it did *predict* 2020's WOKE corporate agenda with it's 200 prime directives.
It's about *vision* = never remake Hawks (ersatz, Nyby), no JC's The Thing...never remake Tourneur = NO Schraders's Cat People, never remake J. Lee Thompson = no Scorcese's Cape Fear....yada.
Why inflate content that could fit in a 5-min video with unnecessary recap of the franchise? Face it, the people who know Blomkamp was gonna direct Robocop KNOW what Robocop is about. Cut to the chase, guys!
Sick of hearing these ai generated voiceovers, im out
Amazon's butchering of Tolkiens middle earth, Sandersons Wheel of timr, and Halo does not bode well for Robocop
Yeh but *Fallout* tho bruh? Best binge so far this yr...
Elysium was nearly a great movie. It was only the sub-GCSE politics (“poor people good, rich people bad”) that turned it into a clunky morality tale.
It was pretty clunky an morality driven to begin with, tbh
The 2014 film was so poorly written. Michael Keatons character was a criminal waste of Michael Keaton.
Nah, it wasn't so much the script's issue (as far as adaps go, leastwise) but I concur re Keatons screen time.
The RoboCop Trilogy Rulez✊🏻!
RoboCop (2014) Rulez✊🏻!
Is it really a trilogy tho? I mean, they switched leads for RC3, nixed the satire, the violence, the style, the politiX, yada...
...I'd say it's more like a DUOlogy with an unwashed, bastard offspring that got fostered at birth.
Neil Blomkampf made 1 ok ish movie and got handed every deals for every sci-fi ip. They realized he wasn't good, and all his ideas were shot down
