    When my 15 year old 40 inch Toshiba stopped working in Feb this year, I had a realy hard time finding a replacement. The only TV's for sale have HDMI inputs and my PC only has VGA output. The temporary TV was a 19inch with composite input so I was using my VGA to comp converter that gave a horrible fuzzy picture, I could'nt read any text), which meant I could'nt look online for anything. The new 43 inch with VGA cost me £320. So I'm fixing the old one as a spare. :)

    So what if none of the back lights come on? Is it then the power supply? I have a TV and the power supply is clicking when I unhooked the main board and stops doing so but none of the back lights obviously, any help

      I would say then to test the power supply.

    First!!! Good job Dave. With TVs so cheap now unless you can find a good used board it just doesn't make sense to repair a 6 year old set that may have failing LEDs in the future.

    Hi !
    Very interesting content and comments, thanks for your video. Do you know the usual voltage the backlight LEDs usually need on Samsungs (side LEDs, as well as backlight strips) ? I have a lot of spare parts (due to working with signage products) and yet this is a very difficult information to come by... As I am just a noob in electronics (yeah, you gotta start somewhere) I don't want to damage anything (nor myself) but would love to start tinkering with those powerful LEDs...
    Thanks in advance for your help !

    • @GrantsPassTVRepair
      @GrantsPassTVRepair  4 місяці тому +1

      I don't know what the typical voltage is going to be, but what I like to do is place my LED strips on a variable power supply and turn up the voltage slowly to see at what point they come on.

      I don't know if the back lights will always come on with every Samsung TV model when you disconnect the main board cable, but suppose the back lights could be bad.

    Im troubleshooting a Samsung 85" CY-SA085HGHV1H. The back lights were flashing off and on. After a few minutes the backlights came on but had dark areas. The media was working and I could see video. Unplugged the unit overnight and next morning no back lights. I can hear the tv samsung startup sound but no back lights. The Back light terminal has 380vdc output so I assume the back lights went bad overnight? Makes no sense. Does the neg side of the LED have a current control that may shut down the LED's? Any ideas?

    • @GrantsPassTVRepair
      @GrantsPassTVRepair  8 місяців тому

      I know of one case where the backlights were still working, but their current draw was so far off from what they should be, they made the whole TV shut down. It's my understanding that feedback circuits can detect problems with defective back lights, they may make the whole TV shut down.

    my samsung - un65nu6900. Powers on and has a full picture but has a thick Dark tinted line just off to the right of Center..what could it be? Backlight?

    • @GrantsPassTVRepair
      @GrantsPassTVRepair  10 місяців тому

      If the dark line has a perfect transition to a normal picture on the right and left edges it's probably a display issue, but if the right and left edges of the dark line are a slow transition to normal brightness it's most likely a back light issue. I'm sure you can youtube back light symptoms to get a better idea..

      Because I made this video a long time ago, I don't remember much about it, but based on what I see in this video, it appears that the T-con could be part of the main board, since I can't see a t-con board in this video.

      Yeah, I use AdBlock for that. I'm talking about ads the TV shows even if you are watching video from an old VCR. This is not an internet thing. The ADs are coming from inside the TV. No network connection needed. I think they said the TV has a cellphone in it that it uses to get new ads or some such. It was an aside conversation on ua-cam.com/users/Level1Techs I can not find the exact video now. Wait until you buy a new TV, then you see what I am talking about.
