    In this video I show you how to test your TV back lights without a LED light tester, using 3 (9 volt) batteries in sink, I'm able to get 27 volts and test my TV led back lights to see which lights are out or if a whole row is out. The TV in the video is a 47 inch LG TV and these LG TV's are known to have back light issues. Thanks for watching.

    4:47 - Is there a reason you chose the center negative terminal on the led strip instead of the outside? I would think there is less of a chance to short out your power supply when using the two outside terminals. Are the two negative terminals not the same on each strip?

    A little confusing following the path of current flow. How does the left and right sides get the flow? Are each row in series from left to right? If so, why doesnt the right side light up? Are they all shorted on the right side?

    So then if I wanted to use the old LED backlights out of our tv to use to light up different areas of my motorcycle off of it's 12 volt battery then I would probably need to wire some voltage reducers (I forget what they're called) inline depending on how many LEDs I'm running in order to keep them from burning out?
    P.S. They are a nice shade of blue now, perfect for under lighting on our Glacier white pearl Harley-Davidson! Lol

    Regarding why the some strips only light from one end: I appears that strips are not lighting from the end that has a shorted connector on them. Therefore when the battery is connected to the end with the shorted connector the battery current flows threw that connector and short out the battery. Notice that each row is made up of two 5 LED strips connected in the middle and that two rows are connected together in a series arrangement on the top half and that the bottom tow rows make up another series connected bank. When connecting to the strip opposite the shorting connector the 27 battery arrangement was being connected to a strip that lights up with a little over 14V. I am sure the current was being liited by the internal resistance of the battery in this case.

    I have Dell 5348 AIO whose inverter board is malfunctioning. I have a question about the 'Backlight connector PIN configuration', it has 4 pins, 2 middle pins for LED power and 2 corner pins for 'Channel 1 current feedback & Channel 2 current feedback'.
    The channel pins have 5V power when the Backlight LEDs are on and non when there're off. These are not GND pins then where are the GND pins and what are the 'Channel 1 current feedback & Channel 2 current feedback'.
    Kindly advise.

    But I have one doubt in testing voltage , as you stated first there are 9 led bulb and each are 2 to 3 volts then total votes required is max.27 volt but as I understand you applied 27volt on lesser led . Then why these are not got faulty due to access voltage across terminals?
    Actually I need the support to repair my own led tv with 40inch screen

    • @jnbfrancisco
      @jnbfrancisco 11 місяців тому

      @@Chevroletcelebrity We didn't have one. It was a rare situation that it was useful. We could have used the 28vdc battery on the aircraft but getting it out and bringing it to the location required would be more difficult than using the three 9v batteries. Also low current available from the three 9V was safer.

    Do you know how to test capacitors? I mean without taking them off the board. But anyways, Excellent videos!! I never would have thought a few bad LED's would cause it to flash like that! You just saved me a lot of money trying out other parts. Definitely subscribed, and keep it up!!

    • @mixerfistit5522
      @mixerfistit5522 3 роки тому

      You can't really test a capacitor without removing. If they're surface mount, you can check for a dead short though. Capacitors are often parallel with other capacitors and components so their capacitance can be affected by them if still in circuit

    • @Josephthinleg
      @Josephthinleg 3 роки тому

      @@mixerfistit5522 Hey thanks! And yeah I figured you couldn't test without removing them, it just sucks having to remove them to test and re-solder, especially since I have a cheapo soldering iron, it was like $10 I think haha. Do you happen to know a good soldering iron that's not too expensive? I don't do a WHOLE lot of soldering but it's so much better with a good one, (this one doesn't get hot enough it seems and have to hold it on there for a long time, especially when de-soldering) but yeah this is pretty much just a hobby fixing TV's, been doing it for 10 years or so. I usually get TV's free on Facebook or when they have a free cleanup at the landfill, always a bunch of TV's there.

    • @mixerfistit5522
      @mixerfistit5522 3 роки тому

      @@Josephthinleg I use a solder station that has a digital temp display and also an integrated heat gun which is great for components with multiple pins. I bought mine for about £60 a year ago, they all seem to be clones on ebay of more expensive models. If you look for solder stations you'll see what I mean. Mine has a variable power supply up to 15v and 2A which is handy for testing individual LEDs and little motors etc. They heat up really quick too. Sometimes I wish I had a psu up to 24V but the cost goes up a bit then so have a look around within your budget.
      BTW if you're trying to desolder the LEDs on a TV you'll need to remove the strip first and either apply heat to the back of the strip or to the led carefully as most of the heat gets pulled away by the copper strip and you won't get anywhere

    I sent my TV (LG 42LB65) to be fixed by an LG-certified repair center here in Egypt. The backlight strips were replaced, but instead of bright white spots, there are slightly dark spots, which can be noticed in video games with large bright uniform scenes. In other words, my problem was mitigated, not completely resolved. When I called the maintenance shop, they told me this is due to the fact that the components of my TV (especially the power supply) are old. I bought the TV, as far as I remember, on 2/2/2015, making the TV over 8 years old at the time of repairing (late May 2023).
    The weird thing is that the sightly dark spots are there despite the backlight being very very bright. Moreover, on some contents colors seem to be "washed out"; too much pale color on the screen, especially UA-cam videos.
    Several technicians I know tell me different things, but most notably that it might be an issue with the quality of the LED backlight strips. The strips I installed are not a genuine kit produced by LG, but a Chinese one. The repair shop told me that the genuine backlight kits are far more expensive and are not available; all those who claim to sell genuine Korean LED backlight strips are lying.
    I need help, can this issue be 100% resolved? Can this issue persist due to the TV being old? I want to fix the issue 100% and have my TV like new again. Do you think someone here is lying to me?

    • @DaKosi
      @DaKosi 5 місяців тому

      Did the other technicians open the TV up and checked what LED stripes were actually replaced? Because this sounds like the first technicians just removed the faulty leds and kept the old stripes in. So basically you could have led stripes with the faulty LEDs missing on them. I did this to a TV of mine too. Found that two LEDs were faulty and just removed those from the strips and insted of putting a new LED on the stripe I bridged the contacts with a wire.

  • @kb8978
    @kb8978 4 роки тому +4

    I could be wrong.... but I feel like you were applying voltage to the wrong side of the strips. The fact that you got them to fully light up from the other side tells me that these strips likely zigzag down. Power going one way from one strip, the other way from the next row.
    Every other strip needed power from the opposite side to light.

      I noticed that as well. I wish he would have tested the right side of the first strip then i could fully believe him.

    I used my home made bench power supply , it has about 20+V , and when i test any strip it lights up but DIM , when i say DIM its dim , like barely visible dim , i didnt even see it first time
    When i plug it in TV power supply , its also DIM , sometimes it even Flashes like when i just plug it in to Wall socket , it flashes constantly , when i turn it on it holds but dim again
    There are 2 DEAD LEDs in those strips ,
    I checked the power board , seams ok , i checked Mosfet for Back light power on the power board its ok , it works
    So only thing ive found is 2 dead LEDs and Strips light up Dim, ive checked them separately like here , always DIM , i didnt expect to see them all DIM , that is why im unsure if it is the strips , how come they all died and went dim , i expected few working ones .
    Cant check the diodes separately there is no point to hook em up ,if i dont break the difusers , do you guys susspect also that strips are dead ?

      Hey I got 36volt DC power supply and a ''lab'' psu with the 20 volt yellow? I haven't played with it in a long time. I'm thinking the 36 will probably blow it but do dim LEDs cause the power supply to shut off and on? Mine flashes ever 10 seconds

    • @dedskinprodcerdj4273
      @dedskinprodcerdj4273 4 роки тому

      @@astrataway7077 you mean your TV led strips flash , count you leds , every led is 3V , so if you have 9 LED diodes on a strip, correct voltage is 27V , and you wont burn it up until 30V , thats how you know , but im suspecting your LED driver doesnt work just like mine ,check the output voltage on it , its probably busted , ive fixed mine but i have dead short on the board somewhere and cant find it .

    THIS IS GREAT. My Insignia 50" went dark - not dead - after 17 months. Insignia diagnosed it over the phone because "they see this often." So it's a known failure they won't fix. Best Buy won't even give me an estimate to repair until I SPEND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS on a "service contract." Be warned. Crooks.
    What's the smart/safe method to drain any capacitor on the power supply before touching anything? It's never the part you're working on, it's the ones you're not paying attention to that bite you.

    you only tested half of the row (4 lights vs 9 lights). 4 * 3.3V = 12V. yet your tester was 27V. Kinda confusing. I'm lost as to why the whole row did not light up. if you had made the math 4 *3 or 5*3 then I'd be less lost.

    I took apart 3 of these tvs, all cracked screen. These LG tvs uses 6v leds, so...retest from the middle 24v for 4 led strips and 30v for 5 led strips. Then test each one with a 6v power source. These strips are harder to test because they do not have test points between the leds so you need to make your own by scratching the white protective layer off. This guy fixed the same tv ua-cam.com/video/Q46Y7HZW9ck/v-deo.html
