- Young British sportscar driver Jann Mardenborough has been involved in a crash in a race in Germany which has resulted in the death of a spectator.
Mardenborough was competing in the VLN1 event at the Nurburgring Nordschliefe when his Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 flipped up in the air as it crested a rise in the circuit.
With the nose of the car pointing up in the air, it soared for around 30 metres before landing on its tail and bouncing over the catch-fencing into a crowd of people.
Saw Gran Turismo yesterday and this scene was as brutal as the real clip. The movie didn’t shy away from this whole incident and the impact it had on him after
It was awesome movie, I haven’t seen for a very long time.
And they didn't bother acknowledging the desised in any way after the movie and was used as some cheesy plot line that was quicklyresolved with a "accidents happens" speech. No "in honour of" or anything like wtf was that about?
The family probably didnt want their names used but there was a scene where they held a press conference about the tragedy.
@@shawklan27it was, and still is a controversial death. Of course it’s going to be used as a pilot line instead of explicitly exposing the victim
The Gran Tourismo movie clip looks way too artificial, sped up rotation like it was an arcade game. Even sim racing games as BeamNG, AC, R3E, rF2, AMS2, PC2 standard crash simulations could do it better than the filmmakers CGI graphics for kids' eyes.
I remember seeing this clip years ago - had no idea the driver was the Gran Turismo guy that went pro
same i just looked the Jann Mardenborough crash up after watching the movie and remember seeing this clip years ago
same i was shocked to see it in the movie because i had no idea
Same. Saw it and promptly forgot about it. Didn't know someone died. RIP.
The gran turismo movie was actually real about a racer boy
He race in le mans at the year 2013
Having this incident included in the film really does lets you know that racing or driving in general can be incredibly dangerous.
One time at Le Mans a crash killed 83 spectators
@@jdlamb4212 holy that is insane, just looked this up. wow speechless
Yea, no fucking shit, are you new to the concept of "The Automobile"
@@jdlamb4212Omg, that’s horrible.
Lol. Like people don't think it's dangerous?? 😂😂😂
I just watched the movie and I really didn't think this had actually happened. How horrible...I'm really speechless...
I’m the other way, I had watched this video so many times, didn’t know who that was
These types actually happened a few times, back during GT1 days in Le Mans. 2 CLK GTR went flying.... 3 Times, it happened twice to Mark Webber.
Edit: Forgot to mention, IN THE SAME RACE!
Why does it happen though why does the car fly is it possible to avoid
@@lightammo4301 the underside of these racecars is totally flat, because usually they try to maintain a low pressure under the car which sucks it to the ground a small amount. When the car goes over a crest or hill at high speed, if the nose lifts enough and air gets underneath the splitter, it can’t escape easily and so a high pressure is created instead. It doesn’t happen often because it takes a LOT of air pressure to physically lift a 1.5 ton racecar.
@@Chrissy-H thanks man
"Finish your lap" was one of the hardest lines of the entire movie.
Damn and here I am thinking the crashed was actually for dramatic purposes of the film, I remember opening Gran Turismo game (don’t recall which one exact) and seeing Nissan promoting this contest. Took me back to some good childhood memories playing the game, crazy to see the outcome and probably this once in a lifetime event. A gamer turned pro racer based on a simulation game, man what a dream 👏🏼
I think it was 4 or 5
the crash was real, but it happened two years into his career. so yeah they did insert the crash and death to make him have a crisis of confidence at the start of his career
Multiple players have went pro irl.
SIM-racer Jimmy Broadbent won a whole championchip like one or two years ago in a real racecar after years of SIM-racing and occasionally karting...
@@OndraMikeI literally clocked on this thread to say this too! It’s becoming a thing in motor sports now even for the “real” drivers to train on SIM
This video is going to blow up now, isn't it?
@takadekadaka2493 Yep❤️🐶
Nah
yees it did@@angryboianimates4444
Probably.. so?
just came back from the movie, im so invested in this guy its just insane
I was shocked because I’d seen this clip so many times on UA-cam years before GT, and when I saw the trailer I was like “no way it’s so similar to that crash I saw” and then I saw the movie and was like “WTF THAT WAS JANN IN THAT CAR” was a rollercoaster of emotions and an amazing movie
Saaaame
@@EDEZ-PresidentEdosame except the movie was utter hotpile garbage. I regret buying it on prime
That was not his fault btw, 'cause the spectators wheren't suppose to be there. But, i'm feeling sorry for the guy who died. Rest In Peace
They were in an official spectator area - I've been there myself during the 24h race back in 2010. The run-off area's design is what made the car flip across the fence. The GT-R's tail smashed into the start of the tire barrier, which made the car rotate forward. When the car's front end smashed into the embankment between (!) tire barrier and catchfence, it bounced off, enabled to clear the fence and smash right into the spectator area.
The GT-R GT3 has always been prone to getting serious air in this spot, as evidenced during 2014's 24h qualifying (Top 40 shootout) when the Schulze Motorsport GT-R pulled an enormous wheelie at Flugplatz.
@@TheValKBawz What he meant genius boy is that spectators shouldn't be there!
And they shouldn't be there!
The organizers are to blame.
HE COME HELLA TOO FAST
@@fyfyi6053 Wrong, you're the genius as nobody expects a car to flip and jump the fence, its a safe location 99% of the time. it was a freak accident nobody is to blame for that not even the circuit organisers. These things happen thankfully not very often.
@@Thunderer0872it doesn’t matter that cars don’t usually flip over the fence. They were supposed to be there
They did this scene perfectly in the movie. Hearts go out that the family
The weird part is that in the movie this was in year 2012 or 2013 since Le Mans was in 2013. So why did they put this in 2012 or 2013 when it was in 2015?
@@DerekPK they switched up the timeline for dramatic effect.
@@iceyplayz3388 That's the problem.
@@iceyplayz3388 They should have just made a fiction film instead, this just makes people disapointed.
@@DerekPK it doesn’t though. They always do stuff like this in movies based off of true stories. Do you think the Conjuring movies were 100 percent true? Even Ford vs Ferrari exaggerated some stuff. Did it really change anything? No.
After watching this in the film, I had a kind of retroactive deja vu - first remembering that this really happened, and then realising that it really happened to Mardenborough.
This happened 3 years after his debut.
The movie makes it seem like it could've been inexperience, but it wasn't.
It was the car.
It was the fault in the car design why are you hating and trying to drag someone down.
@@reanactresen3700
Huh?
That's what I'm saying.
It was the car.
@@guywhosellsvapes4595 oh mb I read your comment as there was no excuse for him causing this accident.
In all honesty, if you already know the course, you know to slow down when going over such hills due to the possibility that the car could do this. So it's the car design as well as inexperience, in my opinion
Exactly what im saying. That other niggas hating@@guywhosellsvapes4595
this crash was when Jann Mardenborough was well into his real driving career after the 24h Le Mans third place victory in 2013, whereas in the movie it's portrayed as if the crash had happened before the Le Mans racing. Just so you know the difference and that the events in the movie are not chronological.
didn't know. thanks, bruv
"after the 24h Le Mans third place victory in 2013"
- Is third place a victory?
@@thepsychologist8159Typically in any sort of podium event be it motorsport or track/field placing in the top 3 is considered a victory.
@@littleknownperfection694 Interesting outlook. I'm a distance runner (at the age of 52yo) and when I win I consider it a victory. When I come second or third, I consider it a solid achievement. Back to motor racing, I wonder why Jean Alesi was so ecstatic when he won his first (and only) GP and many other examples like that as well. Just like when Norris missed his first win. Gee, if only he had pitted earlier right? I'm sure he kicks himself every day. And, when he finally does take a first place, he'll truly consider it a victory.
@@thepsychologist8159 after 24 hours racing a leaf on wheels at top speed, with so many oponents... yeah, pretty much a victory
How many people looked this up after watching the movie?
Same…on a massive rabbit hole now. Insane story
Nah, not me. Being a regular motorsports fan for decades - this finally came into my YT feed, since I regularly watch F1, CART/USAC, WEC, and old school Can-Am racing anyways.
This reminds me of Manfred Winkelhock back in the day in 1980 while racing in F2 crashing at the Nürburgring too - only it was on the notorious _'Flugplatz'_ section of the circuit.
Where it was common for cars to become airborne at the _'Flugplatz'_ ... *even before the 1.5 litre engines were upgraded* (by FIA regulations) *to 3.0 litres in 1966.* Whether in F1 or WEC (formally known as WSC).
Forget all the dumb stunts on "Xgames" - this was dangerous enough. Let alone lapping at Monza at an average speed of 150mph with a full tank of fuel bladders sitting at both of your sides, *engaging in constant slip-streaming* (AKA NASCAR fans call it "drafting") *battles with your competitors.*
The movie (which was great by the way) brought me here. My respects to the family and close one of the deceased spectator. What a nightmare they must have suffered.
That air under the car always happened to me in my Toyota Minolta when playing Gran Turismo III.
I think this thing was plastic.
Plus spectators illegally sat there and were allowed to be there cos of how dangerous it be for them but sadly they didn’t listen
Car was at fault aswell as the spectators but the families still have my condolences.
I went to see the movie yesterday and it's tragic and heartbreaking to see that it actually happened in real life.
I worked in the movie VFX and specifically on the cars. As it always happens in animation we use references of real clips and in this case we have a real shot that was recreated digitally.
Here because the Gran Turismo movie will include the scene based on this crash...
Who cares
@@9tz768 cared enough to reply 💀
Yes it did. It was a good movie. The camera angles between dialogues were a bit painful tho
@@aliothmansaber4686 well it's gonna be, since we have to wait until around August to see one.
@@v12ts.gaming I didn’t have to wait hehe. I watched it yesterday.
Just watched the movie. Its crazy the history of this guy
They made the scene in the movie look really similar
I was amazed that the whole movie really happened (ofc with some "liberty")! Very inspiring. Searched for this accident the moment I walked off the theater.
I didn't know this crash really happened. I just watch Gran Turismo and I thought they inspired on Mercedes 1998 Le Mans crash. So scary.
I mean the VFX guys killed it they did a Great Job showing this Scene in the Movie so much Impact
Just saw grand turismo a few minutes ago, that crash was crazy..
He gave his permission for the scene to be used in the movie to recognize the family of he person killed and to let them know he will never forget about it, he also served as a stunt double and consultant on the film as well
This crash now features prominently in the Gran Turismo movie. Well worth a watch!
I am in cinema rn and i just watched the scene in the GT movie, it was brutal. It showed the exact tragic and felt me bad. Amazing movie but a tragic crash. 😢
When I saw this clip when I was 17 I never knew they will make a movie based off the driver in the future, it’s good to know the context of everything.
Saw the movie #GranTurismo yesterday, and I was absolutely stoked at how Jann fulfilled h is lifes dream, as I've recently just become an avid Sim Racer (no where near his level), I was stoked and speechless as I watched the movie unfold, I knew the tracks, I knew the layouts as I'd been playing them for months now....when the scene of him going down this strip of the Nurburgring showed, I literally shouted, OMG...he's going too fast...was just a kneejerk reaction. If you raced on Nurburg, you know, that lip is can cause a car to lift.....I'm glad Sony stayed true to the events (at least this one) to show people how real and utterly dangerous racing truly is. I'm glad Jann was able to walk away and had the resolve to see his life's dream come true. Condolences, despite it being years later to the famiy of the bystander killed in this freak accident.
Just saw the movie tonight and curious if it was on here
Crazy to think he walked away from that. Incredible safety tech
Not really, it's a very tame crash.

Wait, I saw this flying GTR video back in the day. It was Jann?! Wow
Indeed, I find this footage upsetting
“i’ll hit the brakes hell fly right by”
but fr RIP to the one spectator who died
I started racing in late 1970ies and having a first watch at this I would never ever have though the driver would come in one, single intact piece after such a horrific crash. Btw, didn't Jann start racing after booting up proper simracing, just as Verstappen The Younger did?
yes he did
@@snowycoOh yes, looked it up. OK GranTourismo, so not exactly real simracing. But I remember another guy (Frenchman I think) who got it into real prototype racing and even Le Mans participation. Also just via console GT game event and not 'real' simracing. I just forgot his name. But remember it was maybe a couple of years after an event in my country on country wide electronics store in GT for PS2 where the winner would get a ride in a F1 car.
@@stenovitz that wouldve been 1 of 2 people: Lucas Ordonez, the first to ever win GT Academy or Bryan Heitkotter
@@stenovitz also gran turismo is real simracing he used a racing wheel to practice
@@snowyco Thanks alot for clarifying! Last five years I thought I've lost my memory, but just very vaguelyrecalled Lucas Ordonez in my mind, but quickly forgot it again, which has grieved me as I followed him for a couple of races in his 2nd or 3rd real world season.
Big THANKS again!
Jann didn't fall unconscious here like in the movie. He had no idea he just took a life😢
I saw the film and it turned out that a very strange accident happened. Obstacles for professional racers. The film is good
Acabei de assistir o filme, recriaram igual, muito bom
Crazy how he survived that though
Acabei de assistir Grand Turismo e por isso estou aqui. O acidente deixou o filme mais emocionante, porém é lamentável que realmente tenha acontecido de fato 😮
Who else is here from the movie?
Here because I just watched the Gran Turismo movie. Did not know this really happened.
Who's here after we watched gran turismo?
9 Years later…
Yeah i saw this scene when i watched the Gran Turismo movie and that is just INSANE on how the car legit lifted up and just, flew and jumps intothe air and does insane flipping/flip and crash and destroys the car / shreads the car
I just watched the movie Gran Turismo and had to see for myself if the crash was real, wow it was hectic!! Thankful Jann made it out alive.
If they were behind the 2nd fence no one would have died
You was not supposed to stay behind that fence
Here from Gran Turismo lol
Good movie btw
I thought it was made up for the movie, but damn... R.I.P to the spectator, and thank god the driver (I forgot is name :c) didnt die.
The ramp when any car would lift a bit at high speed, not to mention the windy weather and the major part is he's GTR rear bumper design which creates an uplift.
The Drivers name is Jann Mardenborough
Not to be insensitive but I’m playing GT on console, this thing with his car would happen a lot if you weren’t careful. To see it in real life, knowing it’s not his fault is something else. I’m glad they told his story. Rip to the spectator.
Vim aqui ver depois de assistir ao filme, a cena ficou identica !!
This is the crappiest camera work I've ever seen.
I saw the crash in the movie
When i saw the actress who portrayed jann's mother how much despair i cant imagine what her real mother went through on that day
Fun fact: the actress who plays the mother of the protagonist was one of the Spice girls.
I JUST WATCHED THIS AND SAW THE TITLE THAT SAID “2015” AND SAW 9 YEARS AGO, AND I WAS LIKE “why’s it titled 2015 if this video is 9 years old?” THEN I REALIZED
I genuinely though they added this to gran turismo i had to google if it really happened was shocked tbh ive been involved in motorsport since i was 15 seen some major crashes but this was brutal
I just saw GT film which had had this crash in it
Jann started crying in the hospital after finding out he killed a spectator after the crash in the Nürburgring.
Kesini grgr nonton lur album film:)
I just watched today and im surprised it really happened
Me too though it was just Hollywood being over dramatic
could u do another take with more nauseating camera motion?
Seen this video so many times and just watched the movie. I was shook 🫨 and damn man. Poor dude
Movie was spot on wow
Oh my...same in the movie, thats so heavy
This reminds me how safer F1 has become these days. They have crashes worse than this, at higher speeds than this but still mostly drivers just walk away after the crash as if it was just minor scruffle. Albeit a little disoriented!
Why doesn’t the car flip in the air in Gran Trueismo game?
bro i remember being there and seeing that incident i was terrified
Sometimes i forget how dangerous racing can be..
Viewers discretion ? I saw the bottom of a car and lots of blurry video.
It's really sad. I really feel bad about the spectator. everywhere it's keep saying spectator spectator like this person is nothing. Hard to even find his name in any article. Just a spectator died. That's it😢
There are news articles saying "compared to the movie the car didn't flip in real life" and you CLEARLY SEE IT FLIPPIN THANKS TO THIS VIDEO.
news journalists spreading false news? Never heard that one before
Yet he came back stronger than ever
Not really, hasn't done anything memorable since this crash.
Just finished watching Gran Turismo and went here to research about Jann.
Cuando vi el video me dejó triste con el choque😢😢😪😭😭
The most re......ed and dangerous track ever made.
That definitely left a mark
Rip
Can someone explain this type of incident. Was it his fault or is this a freak accident where a huge air pocket goes under the car?
Hey man. I was there when the accident happened. This point of the Nordschleife is called Flugplatz ( airfield) because the cars jump there. The gtr was fast like the other but the gtr can get very fast unforce an then this happens. They build the Flugplatz flatter after this accident. For My personal it was the terrifyinglyst day of my life. Peace out✌🏻
It was a freak accident, no way cars are supposed to flip on the track like that
Scary
This made me remember of the mercedes crash from 1999
god damn my boy went flying for real
Just saw the movie and what a great movie it was.
Didn't realize how brutal this accident really is after watching the film. Guess driving without a joystick is really hard huh
How many deaths
thats diffrent then a film
saw this in the movie, thought this didn't really happen, it turns out this accident was a fact
GT movie brought me here
Learned two things after watching the movie, there’s still official racing at the old Nurburgring and people still get killed.
I am here to see if this is actually real after watch the movie.
