My friend who owns one says it's the best gift she's ever received, that she would never spend her own money on. I think that's the best way to describe this mug. I also own one, that I bought for like $100 off at Costco. It's a peak nonessential luxury item. The app is a buggy mess, but the hardware itself is solid.
In this corner of the coffee circle on UA-cam it’s amazing to me how many people think this cup is over priced. We are talking about a community who really sees no problem spending hundreds if not thousands on a grinder, and hundreds upon hundreds on accessories and brewers as well as buy expensive specialty coffee, all for the end result of enjoying better coffee and yet they scoff at a one time $130 investment into a tool that allows one to extend the life of their end result coffee for 3 to 4x longer and to optimize the experience and have consistent temps to really pick up small differences in their brews day to day. Best purchase I ever made as far as coffee accessories go

I've had the travel mug for about 4 years. Battery is on its last legs so I'll definitely be purchasing another one soon. I just LOVE that it keeps your drink at the optimal temperature.

Spot on review! I've had the same cons when adding milk. It will keep it warm, but it does not have that fresh brewed coffee taste. It does a bit better when it's just coffee. So, this mug has converted me from having to add things into my coffee to just drinking it black with no sugar.
I received the Ember2 as a gift. I enjoy it a lot, it does keep the liquid warm until I finish. It takes a long time to recharge, but I’m happy with it. I wouldn’t buy it for myself, but as a gift, its a win.
Another great video. I love my Ember2. I only use it for black coffee or tea. When I do milk it is usually in one of your hand made cappuccino cup I love those also. I have setting for light coffee, green Tea and darker roast so they are always cooling down to the preferred temperature setting. I also give them as gifts to other coffee and tea lovers.

this is why i use an insulated decanter/pitcher to hold my coffee as i periodically pour it into a small cup to sip from. helps cool smaller amounts of coffee quicker so i can enjoy my coffee as soon as it's been brewed and making it last a bit longer than usual. i seen other coffee nerds sorta do that but i originally borrowed that from my gongfu tea brewing method. definitely helps a bit more
I love mine simply because I can sip my coffees at the perfect temperature for longer and end up drinking less coffee and using less beans
I kind off want to have this, but I don't want to spend this amount of money on it.

what's funny though: we got used to charging our phone daily, charge our watch daily, charge our laptop daily, charge the headphones daily, the hoover, and just in case there is something left that never needed charging: yes, we now have to charge even the coffee mug 😀
Love my Ember. Considering that most people spend around $2 a day for five days straight and after three months, you have already spent more than that on coffee that eventually grows cold in a paper-type cup.
Thank you for this video ♥️ I have looked at the ember mug for such a long time because I often forget my coffee during work. Plus, I like to stretch out the drinking time and enjoy it for longer. I couldn't get over the cost though, I just don't think that the gain is worth the amount of money. For now I have bought a good quality thermos and just pour small cups. That works very well for me, as I can prepare the thermos both for work or for homeoffice. The thermos holds the liquid hot throughout most of the working day and I can finish each small cup much easier at the perfect temperature.
I think I would buy the Ember mug if it ever went down to 75$ or so. I get that it's expensive but 130$ seems a bit much

I got this as a gift a few years ago. In the last year the ceramic around the bottom started cracking. Ember replaced it right away with no charge. The newer one has been working fine ever since. I rather love the mug, but I would not buy it, but I also don't have the money for it.
My solution is to have the coaster at my PC desk.
When I'm done with coffee I start charging it immediately, *before* washing it, when I sit down at the PC in the evening it will be glowing green for a full charge and I wash it and leave it to drip dry in the kitchen next to the other coffee gear.
I tried washing *then* charging and I kept forgetting to charge it.
It ought to be easy to make a value judgement on the Ember compared to a traditional mug warming plate. With the Ember you get more sophisticated temperature control, some limited portability away from the base unit, and... not much more. For the cons, you have price, relative frailty of the components, and unless you purchase more mugs, the necessity of washing and charging the mug after use. For a mug warmer the pros are the price, being able to use your own mugs, and to swap them on a whim. The biggest con is that the mug has to rest on the plate to stay warm, of course, and none are going to have so fine a control over the temperature of the contents. Most don't even have adjustable temp settings. I kind of wonder if this is all moot though. I have a good-quality vacuum insulated travel mug (otterbox elevation), and it definitely keeps its' contents uncomfortably warm for more than 90 minutes away from home.
I love this mug and this will be the hill I die on.
All else being equal, this is the single best piece of coffee equipment I own. I'd have a hard time functioning without my Ember.
It’s an expensive product, but I don’t know anyone who has it and doesn’t like it.

The battery will eventually die, can it be replaced? If the company dies, how long will the app keep running? When this mug breaks, how hard is it to recycle?

Hey thanks for this very thoughtful and valid comment. It's definitely something we've thought about (and have briefly touched upon in some other videos). It's hard to get accurate/complete information, but it is something we've been brainstorming about in terms of how to tackle the topic more effectively. Thanks for reminding us.
My tip for anyone who wants a "poor man's Ember" is to buy some double-wall glass mugs (I have the 12oz bodum pavina, but really any double-walled glass will do), brew into a carafe, give it a swirl and pour into the mug from higher up to cool the brew down a bit (you could skip the carafe, but it will take quite a while to cool down to a pleasant drinking temperature). Double-walled glass keeps at temperature for so much longer than ceramic, and the glass serves as a very effective visual reminder to finish your cup.
You could also reverse this trick and brew into a double-walled carafe with a lid and drink out of small ceramic tasting cups, which will quickly cool the coffee just before you drink it.

I’m curious if there’s NFC/shortcut support for the app. It looks like you could set up a shortcut on your phone and set up various NFC tags for various temperature settings. I’d probably never be able to drop $130 on a mug but it would be fun to nerd out with the shortcuts 😂😂

I love that the ember mug keeps my coffee warm, but I don't care for the app which is super buggy.
They can create a cheaper product, by doing away with the app(and Bluetooth) and by putting buttons on the mug for temp control. This would be a superior product.
Another complaint is that it's very delicate, so it's easy to scratch the ceramic coating on the inside and outside.
I just ordered one and here is what I expect. I expect almost everyone I know to bash and reticule the purchase and talk about how stupid is it so spend this much money on a cup. Most will do it behind my back while a few to my face and pretend they are just busting my chops in a friendly manner. One of those that will bash me to my face spent $4,000 on a seat upgrade for his mini cooper. Another would gladly spend this much on one Madonna ticket for a one night show. We all buy things that seem to others to be a ridiculous waste of money. Fortunately, I don't care even 1 out of 100 what others think. If you do care what others think then don't buy this OR buy it and keep it a secret. Also, I don't mind the reticule. I find it funny actually because of the hypocrisy that exist with most people and their spending habits.
I own the larger 14oz ember 2 mug and unfortunately I barley use it. Mostly because I drink a 24oz tumbler of Aeropress coffee that uses a concentrated aeropress championship espresso like brew with just over a cup of frothed milk.
If I drank normal drip coffee all day or made smaller drinks I'd use the shit out of it. Unfortunately, just like my Flair Pro 2, it's a gift I barely ever use.
However on occasion I do use my Flair, or more often my Joepresso, to make a smaller cappuccino like milk drink. An in those situations I do use my ember mug. Although it's usually on the weekends when I'm not working and the coffee does sit long. Although it certainly does help make it a more pleasurable experience throughout the drinking process.
Either way it is a nice product. Especially if you use it a lot.
I bought one when it was $100. It didn't take many cups before it started peeling inside on the bottom. I was also very careful when washing it by hand and no spoons ever went inside. Now I never use it. I wasted the money I spent on it.
The coating on the inside of the mug chipped away super quickly so I was pretty disappointed with that, it made me stop using it as much as I was worried about ingesting particles in my drink.
We’ve only had this a couple months and no issues so far but this is worrying. We heard it was an issue with version 1 which was sorted it in version 2. Which one do you own?
I had one of these (fortunately I didn't pay for it), and the pairing/update process was a nightmare. The app kept crashing, and I tried all the methods of "fixing" the issue (re-install etc...) and it never really solved it. The update would constantly stop in the middle and never complete. After a few weeks of having to fiddle with this mug almost constantly, I threw it away. I have no idea if any of these issues have been fixed since, but either way, this "gimmick" ain't worth the price.
Ah this is really odd. Did you have version 1 or 2. A lot of issues, including the coating chipping off have been fixed in the new version. Pairing was a breeze and the app works without any issues.
@@aramse It was most likely the first version, as it was over a Year ago. It's nice to know the app issues have been fixed, but it's still too expensive for what it does. When mine did work, it kept the coffee at optimal temp, but the whole process of cleaning and recharging (and most likely trying to re-pair it to the app) wasn't worth the trouble. Having your coffee get a little cold is a first world problem that really doesn't need solving.

I have one that is 4 years old and the battery is greatly diminished. I don't want to live without it so I'll be purchasing another soon.
There is no optimal temperature. Coffee Tastes good once it's cooled below a certain level, and then stays tasting good all the way to room temp.
The human tongue can taste things better the closer they are to body temperature, if a drink cools below that it won't taste as good as it could
@@ManeManChannel you taste different components based on temperature, good coffee will show different sides depending on temp, and always be good, as long as it's not too hot.
Yup what Jamie said. There is a lot of science behind taste and temp and research is ongoing. But even just drinking a cup that’s cooled below body temp it just doesn’t taste as good. The better the coffee the better is handles cooling down. :)
Okay, I found James Hoffman loving the ember funny, but I'm .. I don't have the words for it.. I'm impressed by how much mileage Namisha gets out of one cup of coffee.
Don't think I'm envying that baby breakfast duty though, I know it's all worth it but motherhood is, well it doesn't look easy :')
