I don't think its as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I never use coffee mugs, preferring my coffee with copious milk cold in a mason jar. However, for someone who uses a coffee mug everyday or multiple times a day and needs their coffee hot, I think it's probably well worth it.

This keeps it at a specific temperature, some people prefer very specific temperature ranges for their coffee. It also doesn't require a lid to maintain the temperature (not that that means much).
It'll also slowly heat up colder coffee without destroying as much of the flavor as a microwave would. With that said, the app stinks and it's hit or miss if it'll actually connect to the mug without having to reset it every time

    • @The9853
      @The9853 3 роки тому +1

@@NickCombs hypothetically, yes. But your insulated mug isn't perfect, it loses heat constantly. On top of that, if you put freshly brewed coffee in something well insulated, it could be close to an hour before it's at a comfortable drinking temperature, once it finally is, it's a race against the clock before it falls out of the optimal range, and once it does, you'd have to dump it into a microwaveable cup, reheat and start the process over. Of course that's really only an issue if you're serious about your coffee.
I like knowing it's at my set temperature, and is going to stay there. But then again, if you are really really really into coffee, you enjoy the flavor changes as it cools to experience all your coffee has to offer. And if you let it sit in the ember mug with only a little left, it starts to get the gross burnt flavor eventually. But I shut it off or turn the temp down if I don't finish it off.

James Hoffmann did a video on the Ember a while back - it made an appearance in another video recently and was still working just fine. It's one of those things that's conceptually so simple that there really isn't much to go wrong on it in the first place. It's for sure overpriced, but it at least seems well-built.

I think my coffee maker was $20 cheaper than this mug... mug should brew my coffee.

And add cream and sugar. It also should make lattes and cappuccinos, and it would still be too expensive.

You reviewed something which I have been using daily for over 18 months. And it is seriously one of my “gadgets” that I use everyday. Which I didn’t expect. I agree on the price but I splurge money on “gadgets” anyhow 😉 As I like to drink tea in the morning at 50C (122F), the Ember is perfect as it is a warmer which you explained very well. So the Ember tells me when my tea has cooled enough (which is very important to me) as I don’t like piping hot tea. I do like a hot espresso or two after my tea so the Ember isn’t really of benefit there. Something that avoids me getting my tongue burned, is also a huge pro. Although it is pricey, I would recommend the Ember because for me it has become a very useful “gadget”.

Ok, do that many people drink coffee so slow they need something to keep it hot? I'll just use my normal cup and drink it within a normal span of time. BTW there are yeti and other mugs non electronic and a fraction of the price that keep coffee hot for hours.

I used to be a personal assistant and had to walk away from my desk for ages and came back to my cold coffee often. I tried insulated tumbler but those would be keeping the coffee at a temperature thats too high for drinking.
This mug would have been great for me. The price is insane though I wouldn't buy one myself. But it would be awesome if someone gifted me one haha.

My wife received this as a gift 8 months ago and I promptly stole it. It’s great for the home office when it sits on the desk most of the day and can wander around when needed.
Only issues I’ve had are sometimes it doesn’t detect liquids and there can be condensation buildup on the coaster near the contacts, which needs wiping every so often. Works great for tea and black coffee, but creamers can separate out and skin over after a while.
Great to receive as a gift (or stolen) but not something I’d buy for myself!

I wonder what the differences between that mug and an insulated travel mug?
That mug will keep warm till battery runs out, but the travel mug doesn't have a battery and just insulates..
So if the £20 travel mug is drinkable after 2 hours and ember is cold after 2 hours, the travel mug wins imo.

They can also keep hot infinitely when connected to their charger.
My mother is a coffee fiend and I got her one of these last Christmas because she'll brew all her coffee at once and drink it slowly throughout the day usually with snacks and certain meals. Before this she did have a normal travel mug, and for the latter part of the day had to get up and microwave her portions all over again. She hasn't gone a day without using this thing since she got it. Different strokes, different folks.

For most people probably the insulted travel mug is good. My Contigo 16oz keeps my coffee hot for about 3 hours. More than enough time to drink.

Peachy Primrose you actually cannot keep drink in a open mug warmer forever. After 2 hours, the drink will become so condensed and lose its original flavour. Just something I noticed.

    • @ChristineSK

Basically insulated mug keeps the drink at a temperature too high for too long. This thing is really aim at the coffee brewing crowd, that when the coffee just finished brewing, it's way too hot for most people to consume if you want to actually taste the coffee. If you put the coffee in an insulated tumbler at this point, it will remain that too hot temperature. However if you pour it to a regular mug, it will gone cold quickly and a lot of people would find it not tasting as well. So you got stuck in this tiny window for coffee tasting their "best". This mug is basically a device that let you always have your coffee at your most preferred temperature.
Is it for everyone? Probably not. Even the hardcore coffee snobs debated if this thing is really necessary. But it has its market and it seems that everyone who got one enjoyed it.
I personally don't mind cold coffee, but I got gifted a temperature control mug similar to ember (heating element inside the cup, but no battery in cup so it must be on the coaster after sipping, and no Bluetooth) and I have to say I really enjoy drinking my coffee and tea this way. Having the ability to drink from that perfect temperature every sip is surprisingly more enjoyable than I imagined.
