It's amazing how as an African who grew up under very extreme poverty lines, what my parents could afford was green veggies, meat was a luxury only afforded mostly at Christmas. What we didn't know was that, what we thought or saw as a poor man's diet, inclusive of Okra almost every second day was actually very healthy for our bodies. Thanks Dr for such enlightenment

True am from Kenya 🇰🇪 my mum made us eat okra vegetables for a good digestive system, my mum is illiterate she never went to school but she was very wise, am 60 years old now my mum is in her early eighties!!
When I was growing up, cancer was a disease for white rich people!!! I never heard anyone in my family ever dying of cancer, my maternal and parternal grandparents died of old age attained almost a hundred years, they died in their late 90s, we come from the lake area our main diet being fish, millet, traditional vegetables (including okra) sweet potato and groundnuts.
Meat is eaten on festive occasions and the cows are traditional ones grazing from one place to another, the cows milk is used to produce ghee.

My grandmother told me that particular food came over to the Caribbean and the US with the slaves from West Africa. Hi everyone, pls eat fresh much better. Steam, not boiling, until soft. Dip into sauce of your choice and eat with rice. I cook pork or chicken or duck in a pot with a bit of sugar, salt, water , ground peppers and fish sauce. This is fhe sauce to eat with salad, okra etc. Simple but the best. To buy the younb okra, just snap the tail and if it is fallen apart that means fresh and young. If it doesn't fall apart, it's old and chewy, don't buy them. Pls avoid tablets as supplements.

Dr. Alan, as a physician myself, I really applaud you for breaking away from the pharmaceutical companies and other colleagues. Actually, as an African, okra is a main part of our diet. Not everyone cook okra with oil, meat etc. That is called *ila asepo*. Originally, Yorubas cook okra fresh with just a little salt and iru ( a seasoning) . Then use it along red stew to eat our solids.
Just for 3mins. On the other hand, for the mixed okra with oil, meat etc..the okra is added last ! It uses just 3mins as well. * We usually add bitter leaf / ugwu leaves to make the dish healthier and more enjoyable.

I love okra! Fried, boiled, in soups. I can eat them pickled but prefer fried. Since fried foods are taboo, I only eat it fried once in a blue moon. I like the slimy too. My dad grew this every year and it produces beautiful yellow blooms. The tallest okra plant I have ever seen is 16foot tall. In order to produce an abundant crop keep harvesting each stalk on a continuous basis when a pod is about 2 inches long. A new pod will grow. You will only need approximately 10 plants to keep you supplied for the summer, and it freezes really well if you have too much. Okra loves hot weather and water regularly. If the plant does not get enough water the pod will be dry and hard. I like the little pods best of all. I grows really fast so keep it cut.

You can steam it or stir fry it.
I stir fry it with either shrimp, Brussels sprouts, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, you get it.
You can also make rice with it, just make sure you season the rice to bring out the flavors.
You can also cook it with things that require longer cooking time and water, like soups or stews. But the best way to make it it's stir frying it lightly seasoned, crunchy but not mushy. If you want to cut down on the slime use lemon juice. 🤗

In Louisiana okra is a very popular food. My father and grandfather grew a truck patch, which is a large vegetable garden. I am retired now, 67 and my body feels starved for most of the foods I and my husband was raised on. We both have strong cravings for sugar but have cut back. We also try very hard to stay away from fast foods. We eat real foods and fruits and vegetables daily. We are what we eat I truly believe this. Speaking of okra. I purchase one bushel annually from an elderly lady in town who cooks it and stores it in freezer bags. Been doing this for years because it’s not too fun to prep, cook and store it. Had to help mom do that when I was a kid!!!!!! Boiling the small okra and pouring a little vinegar and white pepper is also delicious or pickled too.

Put okra in a pit of water , boil it , strain it, then mix it with sweet condensed milk, a bit of spice , and that’s okra juice , you can add Guinness to it if you want to.
Open the belly of the fish , and stuff it with okra , carrots , cabbage, bell peppers, thyme , fish seasoning and spinach if you want , wrap the fish in foil , place it on your barbecue , or put it in your oven , but first put a little water in a oven dish , then put the wrapped up fish in the water , put in oven and steam , oh put some butter in the fish belly with the stuttering, and some butter on top of the fish, then wrap in foil , place it in the oven dish .
Put lots of okra in your pot of fish soup aswell
Steam fish on the cooker , with lots of okra , some seasoning, thyme , carrots , any vegetable you like , potatoes, excelsior crackers , close that pot , few mins , and you will have a lovely steamed fish meal 🥘

Delicious! Salt & Pepper to taste. Another form of quick gumbo.

I can eat okra… but… my son has diverticulitis and this is one food he can’t have. It gets into the pockets of your colon. But he loves it. I didn’t know that this is good for the body in so many ways. Thank you!!

Hello, I just heard about Okra water and I just tried it today as I dont like okra. Why not strain out the seed and let your son drink the okra water.
