  • Do you have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 or similar model and you are unable to print because the printer says that there is a problem with the printing or ink system? Are you receiving an error that the printhead is not detected or installed incorrectly? I may have a cheap alternate fix for you instead of purchasing a new printer or a $75 printhead replacement.

So I have the 8620 with the same problem. No matter what I did I'd get the same error "not detected or faulty print head" This happened when I bought and installed brand new OEM color and black cartridges from HP! After doing a little research I unplugged the printer for ten minutes as recommended. This was suppose to clear the memory data of the ink cartridges. It didn't work. My printer is on my network so I found the printers I.P. address under Setup/Network Setup/Wireless settings/View Wireless Details. I then put the I.P. address into the browser on my computer. On that page click Settings/Preferences/Anonymous Usage Information Storage SET IT TO OFF ! ! ! I believe that solved the problem. The printer was evidently using online information from HP that would cause the Print Head/Cartridge error..... While you are on that page also turn off Preference/HP Cartridge Protection..... Additionally I believe to clear the Print Head or Cartridge data the line cord should be unplugged for hours. Not ten minutes. Hope this helps. Pass the info along.

NEVER, EVER scrub gold contacts with an eraser. It may fix the problem for a while, but then the gold plating is porous (or removed) and will corrode more rapidly. Only use alcohol and a soft lint free cloth or Deoxit Gold G5 contact cleaner. Based upon 35 years experience in the computer industry.

What a relief when that message about the printhead being "unrecognized, not present, or not working" didn't come back after I restarted the computer! Mine are pretty worn with 3/4 of a circle worn in from the springs. I cleaned them and turned the springs hoping for a different contact surface. Total pages printed on my printer is now, thanks to Landshark, 11,825.

I have two HP 8610 printers. I had one show up with the missing or not detected printhead. I've used it a LOT and could understand if a part was worn out. However, the second is a bit newer and not used as much. It was my son's from his time in college. When he moved out he didn't need it so left it for us to use. I plugged it in to have a working printer and a couple of months later it has the same issue. I'm wondering if this is a fault from an upgrade? I cleaned the printhead and did some reset I found. It worked for a few prints and then failed again. I even bought a new printhead and tried it but it would not detect on either printer. Somethings not right here. :-(
I keep forgetting to call HP to grill them about a possible issue with an update.

I found pressing once above the question mark, once below and then twice above brings up a factory menu. I've reset it...which then messes up because of the print head error. I just set it to MFG mode to make the print error disappear so I'll use it for everything but printing...and bought an Epson printer. Those last way longer than HP anyways.

I tried this on my 8600. It did not work. I then ordered a new print head, and it did not resolve the problem. I then took the printer apart, found a component on the main board had a burned hole in the center of the component. Did a lot of research and found the part description and number. It was one of the print head interface chips. Purchased a new part from a discrete component reseller from overseas, installed the part, I do not recommend doing this unless you have the training and equipment to replace surface mount components, reassembled the printer, and it worked with the old and new print head.
Again, this is not a normal repair that just anyone can perform. I have years of experience repairing equipment with surface mount components including VLA, only because I have the equipment to do it with. The cost of the component was not that much, but the labor time made it cheaper to purchase a new printer.

I think thats what an 8600 of 8610 or 8620 is worth when its giving this message and useless is about $10 dollars. But unfortunately
I didn't know all that and gave $50. I've learned a few things of what to try and what not to. I tried a reset to see if it would make the missing print head go away. I think with the partial reset I could get into the rest of the icons if i wanted to scan or something,
But i still couldn't print as it would give the same message. I think I did the full reset and that halted everything as the menu could not be brought up any more. couldn't go past the message. The thing is that was even worse. If I wanted to pull the printhead. I couldn't now, because the the head wouldn't move over to the left when opening the print door. So here I was Locked on that message missing print head. nothing else in the menu would come up & the carriage wouldn't move left to work on it.
So I pulled the wrong end panel off as I thought the green pcb board was on the right hand side like the 8500. they switched sides.
So I pulled the end panel off the (left hand side) . I was looking for leverage to turn that shaft, that goes all the way across. And on
the (printed circuit board) end I found it. There 's a white plastic gear on it. But it was to hard to reach, so I put a vice grip on the end of the shaft ( sticks out plenty far enough). One direction it wouldn't really turn, "hardley at all", (DON'T FORCE IT) but the other direction it did. So I turned it ( not knowing what I'm doing) and turned it some more . I was trying to see if the carriage would move. I didn't see anything. So I took the vice grip off. But!!!!!!
When I reached my hand in there like, I did, several other times before. to tug on it a little, to see if it would come away from the far right.
ONLY THIS TIME IT DID! So now it's back to the LHS where I can, "get it out of there", and try this method with either alchol and cue tip.
or the eraser. And now with the head over Finally. I could also order a ebay new head, If I decide too.

I will never buy HP again, greedy woke company. First, I did all of this it didn’t work, however someone mentioned it was intentional and if I unplugged for a while the message would disappear, and so I did. When I turned it back on, I could print the report page quickly before the message appears without any issues, which suggests the printer head works fine, I think HP has built in this common issue and don’t want you to fix it but instead buy a new printer.
