Got to hear Joe shred on this last night in my hometown of San Jose. I had just purchased it from his website the day before! I'm not a guitar player, but am a collector. This is my second guitar. My other is a GCJ Signature "Blak & Blu" Epiphone Casino. When I was at his merch booth before the show I saw he had several of these for sale. The one on top of the table had a sign that said $1100 and it was the limited to 300 edition with his name in the fretboard, and a big fat signature in gold on the body! He had what looked like 10 of these lined up in the back in his "Nerdville" branded cases. There was another sign next to this, that said he was selling this same guitar for $1500, but it would be the one he opened with his first song of the show! I asked his merch team for more details, and they said yes, the same 300 edition model he would be playing in the first song of the performance would be for sale, and he would sign AND date it. Like Arthur_My_Dear said, they all sound more or less the same, but Joe himself said this Epiphone actually sounds better than the real deal '55 Les Paul's in Copper Irredescent he's acquired (3). Watching and hearing him play this Epiphone replica live was the biggest endorsement ever, and I'm super happy with my purchase, even if it never gets played.
I love the look and even the price seems reasonable with the hard case, but I promised myself after buying my first Eastman that Gibson/Epiphone won’t get another penny of my hard earned fella! And them P90s are the same as my Wilshire reissue, ain’t very good to be honest 😎👊 might be worth modding with a couple of Lolla P90s to see the potential 🤔
GREAT COLIN...l knew you would review this affordable beautiful P-90s Les Paul...l am so curious about this new Epiphone...great Friday today...l am in pole position to watch your review🎸🎸🎸🍷🍷🍷...as always cheers from Italy my friend 🍻🍻🍻👍👍👍
Colin, good post as usual. I'm done with Epiphone, at least the ones made in the far east. I'm a Strat guy but I do have an Epiphone 2021 Lucille, which is my go to( I modified it by installing a short Maestro Vibrola). I believe you're getting robbed with the Epiphone Les Paul's but this Bonamassa Les Paul is a bit more authentic than the usual models. To my naked eye the body dimensions seem correct, at least. This model seems like a better deal than the current Inspired by Custom Shop models!
I bought a $65 2011 MIC Squier. Rosewood fretboard, full body. Installed a loaded noiseless pick guard ($200) a big brass tremelo block ($35) Fender locking tuning machines ($40). $340 total. Filed down the frets. Sand papered the neck, spray lacquered. Added Fender decal (no, not to scam but as my own inside joke). Would stack it up against $2,000 Ultras. Amazing sound, lovely. People, a guitar is a hunk of wood plus Electronics and some mechanicals. I had a blast with my little project. Better than almost all of the junk big companies are selling. Wise up. Have fun. Roll your own. Yeah I got major deals on the parts. They’re out there. Take your time.
Here in the US, Guitar Center is carrying a Limited Edition Epiphone Les Paul Custom P90 for $799, on sale for $599. It came in a fancy gig bag from the factory. I had been considering the Special P90 but hesitated on the color somewhat. I decided to trade two guitars and an amp for the Custom. Black with gold hardware, P90 Pros, ebony fretboard, and a comfortable weight. I wish I had more details than what GC provides. So, $100 more than the Special for a Custom. I didn't tear it down when I got home, just a setup with the existing strings. I did swap out the black knobs for the ones from my Standard 60s. I like the looks better, and one of the stock knobs was wonky, btw. I'm definitely keeping this one! I read about the Joe B 55. I think what I have is good enough for me.
I like the guitar but I gotta put my hands on it. The color is awesome and I love P90S so will see. Great episode as usual, enjoy your weekend Sir 👍. ☮️❤️🎸
Hey Colin - love your channel and videos - you are one of the best guitar demo experts on the Tube. The reason why your method is so appealing to me (and many of us I imagine) is that you give us a great consistent baseline of amp/pedal/volume settings and play tasteful, simple (in a good way) riffs and very guitaristic pieces that don’t vary too much in style and “notiness” thus allowing us to hear the guitars in similar familiar situations and letting them shine (or not) on their own merits. Virtuoso level players (which I am not) might use such highest level technical skill to make any slab of wood with strings sound amazing and would thus be useless as demo-ers. Your playing and method is perfectly suited to this task and is very helpful to us. If you suddenly start busting out ultra high gain tapping riffs I imagine we would all be impressed and promptly stop watching since we now can’t hear any of the character of the guitars. Lol. Carry on, I implore you. And don’t let your lack of inspiration get you down. The true test of an instrument is whether you can play music on it, it would be unfair to expect any random guitar to inspire the next “Whole lotta love” or “Satisfaction” level composing on a rainy Tuesday.
I’m not really Joes fan (With all dew respect to his skill) But that guitar looks awesome If I was searching for LP now I probably would have checked it out - growing interested in p90s)
Beautiful color, reminds me of Beck’s Oxblood LP. Tightening down the tuning machines ensuring snug at each string may improve high sustained frequencies. Just got an Eastman SB55N a couple weeks back. More money, doesn’t look at all Oxblood. Always enjoyed every Epiphone I have played. Still, glad I was able to obtain Eastman. They are my personal favorite manufacturer. I am biased and opinionated. Prepared to argue my perspective 😊✌️🫶🎉
Great review. I also love the Kalamazoo headstock. I also love speed knobs. And, I have no problem with "Indian laurel" at the price. What a great guitar!
Col. When you were at home the strings were in the stop tail centres - in the studio you'd top wrapped them. Maybe check the bridge posts and needs more pressure on the bridge???? just a thought on what makes some lp's work and some not (bit of my own rabbit hole here)
Just got one of these and am impressed with it. Beautiful guitar, and a Les Paul with P90’s too….awesome! I do prefer a slimmer neck, but heck I don’t mind a thicker neck, which this one does have. This is a Rock machine! Love it!
Thanks for this, Colin! Recently I got a specially made for Guitar Center Epiphone LP Custom (in black) that has 2 p-90s, ebony board and thicker, rounder neck profile. It is an excellent instrument and also came in around $800. You would like it, I bet...
Hi Colin, great videos fun to watch and learn. I got to admit it's a game changer that epiphone are using the open book headstock design. I love it. I'm planning to buy a inspired by Gibson les Paul custom and an sg custom, just because I love the new Gibson headstock. I can't play but fancy some more wonderful cheap functional wall art. I just bought that black es 355 in your other video because you get alot for the money at £799. Keep the videos and reviews going. I enjoy your videos.🎸 Dean from Leeds
I think that the initial excitement followed by a cooling-off period is really normal. It seems like a nice enough guitar, and you do such an excellent job of looking at what you're actually getting for the money spent. Anyway, always enjoy the videos, and glad you keep doing them.
I’ve owned quite a few Korean Epis, including two ‘89 Les Pauls, and an early ‘58 Korina V. The newest China-made Epiphones are head and shoulders above the Korean guitars, as far as build quality goes. The Korean guitars feel like toys by comparison.
I just got one for $721 USD shipped. I love the look of it, big fan of the P90's, and absolutely love the color. BTW I share the same problems as you with recording anything, I can literally be playing the thing I want to record effortlessly moments before, then I hit record and feels like I skipped a few weeks back in practice.
Yes!!! Thank you buying the JB signature! I thought I would love this guitar with its P90s, but I am so glad I waited to see if you would review it! Fantastic ❤
Hey, here’s an idea: redo the guitar with 6-pole mini-humbuckers! A modern day LP Deluxe! With the Gibson type surrounds and the Deluxe style mounts, they would fit right into the P90 cavities. (Don’t get actual vintage Gibsons, the size is off a bit). Mini’s would make it scream glorious sounds. New project and a new pickup area for you. Oh, and do a full setup with a check for high frets and the nut slots lowered. Epi never does it quite right on the lower priced guitars.
Thanks for another one, Col'! I've realized that there are times when I can be musicly creative and times when it's more difficult. For me, it's rarely the instrument - it's me. I was unsure how I felt about my first Gibson Les Paul for the first few months I owned it. I've since really come to understand it, and now it's one of my favorite guitars. 🤘☺️🎸
I just ordered one. It’s on back order. If it feels cheap because of the knobs, switch and pick guard, all easy fixes. You can also buy a set of Gibson P90’s, ALNICO 3’s or 5’s for $238.
In my opinion there's nothing wrong with your playing, its absolutely great, i love tuning in and enjoy your bluesy improvs cuz that was mostly the kind of vibes i used to have when i used to sit down with my semi hollow and just see where it would go. I quite enjoy the sound of this guitar, i love p90s and one of my plans was to modify my guitar and put a pair of those instead of the humbuckers.
Nice looking guitars these. I have a similar problem with new epi phones and the resonance they produce. I think these kind of guitars will age well and become more resonant in time as the wood dries out and they are played. I have a 2003 epi LP and that really rings out now but when I bought it brand new all those years ago it had the same problem if you can call it that. I have some advice on your playing if your open to that. When people sit down playing guitar they tend to hunch over the guitar tilting it back to see what they are doing. Try adopting a more relaxed upright position almost making the guitar feel more like it does when your standing playing. Try to listen and feel where your playing without looking what your doing as much. You have a really nice vibrato leave more space in your lead playing and use that vibrato 👍.
Hey Colin, I recently bought three preowned Epiphone LPs. 2008, 2013, 2020. I also own a 2009. I won’t bore you with the models. All look, feel, play great!. I love them all. I plan to sell one and replace with a Standard ‘59 Outfit. The color of this one doesn’t appeal to me. The wonky knob is a disappointment. Thank you for an honest review. The pickups sound just ok. I wanted to be excited about this guitar. Especially the P90s. So far, the demos I’ve listened to haven’t excited me. Your playing was fine and Absolutely serves the purpose as far as I’m concerned. I personally prefer hearing clean tones and with a bit of OD. Thanks for doing that. I don’t need or want to hear shredding with tons of distortion. Cheers mate.
Great video as usual, your honesty is to be commended! Don’t be too hard on yourself, we’re all the same, we all have good days & bad day re playing! It’s all part of the journey. Just remember that you continue to inspire people to pick up a guitar & play!👏👏🎶
as we all know some guitars just dont "do it" for some....but "do it" for others lol! at least you documented one of this model anyway! possibly grab a "flat top" epiphone p90 LP special and do a comparison to this one(using sounders from this one)... i have the "budget" LP special(1v 1t p90)model and love it! mine is TV yellow...i named it "grey poupon".....
Thanks Colin. Yes, .. the price .. these guitar companies have to be profitable. And if it feels like a secondary thing to play .. that's sort of important.
You've reminded me that I have an Epiphone 56 Gold top reissue (P90's) made in 1981 on the wall somewhere that I need to give some love to. I think it cost me approx £300 pre-loved (came with a Hiscox case).
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 I had previously used various serial number checker site and gotten 1981 but actually you are correct. I checked a few others and despite the serial starting with 1981 (which probably is what fooled those sites), it actually was built in 1988 in Korea. Thanks!

I've had that inspiration issue with some guitars. But, like relationships and neighborhoods and jobs and anything else that's different at first and then it becomes home, ...you could suddenly find that connection that makes it 'right'.
Another great video. Too hard on yerself on the playing front. Your playing has helped and inspired me no end. (Learning to play properly and in a style other than hardcore punk and thrash! 😂)
I found that my JB 55 Les Paul was a little lackluster myself after just changing the strings but however it came alive a day later and you should revisit it. I believe the strings got stretched and stabilized. The guitar is a daily player for me now.
Don’t be so hard on yourself brother we all have our off days mate. You have a good and smooth weekend . I would probably change out the parts and maybe try some Seymour Duncan pups in there but I thought they sounded OK. I wouldn’t take it out of bed lol.
Thank you for another great review. I got one of these at my local shop last weekend and did a video about it on my small channel. I absolutely loved mine. The knobs were perfectly installed and work extremely well. The guy at the shop commented on how light it was and I agreed- I got it home and weighed it to find mine is 7 pounds 10 ounces. I think it goes to show one of the big differences between inexpensive and expensive guitars. There is more consistency in an expensive guitar than an inexpensive guitar. It is much more a roll of the dice as to what the quality of the individual guitar will be when it is more affordable- one might be blessed and get one with no issues that is super light (for a Les Paul) like mine or get one that is heavier with a few issues like this one. I’d say two PRS core models, for example, would be much more likely to be uniformly almost perfect.
@@theguitaristas thank you very much. I think you and I have similar feelings about Les Pauls. I keep getting them even though I often realize they aren’t for me, but I do love this one.
Nice one Col, I love your honest videos and playing. I was interested to learn about this model and when it was announced my first thought was "ooo, I hope Col's getting one!" 😂 Look forward to next week mate
Hi Colin, another real nice demo/evaluation. I'm going to try and find one here in Maryland USA and give it a play. I like the price, but for that price it ought to have a Switchcraft toggle switch and output jack. Other Epi's in this price range have them, this one should too. For the sustain "situation" I think you needed to bring the gain up a bit on those P-90's and you're sustain issue will be gone. Don't apologize for your playing. we're all human and sometimes have crap days with a pick in our hands!! I know I do.....Lastly, I "think" you tested this guitar too close to all those high end guitars. Maybe you were expecting a bit too much out of this guitar. Just a thought, I might be completely wrong.... At any rate, thanks for another HONEST review. That's why I love what you do. You call it like you see/feel it. That's ALL GOOD,, Bryan
I did wonder whether you were a bit critical of this guitar in part because of that comparison of more expensive Les Pauls (Gibson, Heritage, Eastman, Maybach) you did recently. Looking at it from a slightly different angle, I think it is important to get to that stage where you can tell the nuances between the "expensive, good quality" guitar and a "mid-price, medium quality" ones. The question is how much are you willing to pay for these nuances.
I'm not surprised. After playing 5 top shelf LPs, no wonder. You said yourself you aren't a LP guy, so grab your favorite guitar and play it. The truth will be told.I do it all the time the time. Works for me. You are still a wonderful guitarist!!
When I put Speed knobs on my epiphone.. I pushed the pot apart..had to take the nut off bend the little tabs to put it back together..!! So I learn to pull the cover and hold the back of the pot to push them all the way on..!!
Nice video Colin, the price is good, the colour is marmite. You played well and we all get days like that, not always the guitar. Would have liked it in black, or a choice of limited colours.
I really like the color scheme. Even the tone of the fingerboard suits the finish. But, I was really shocked at the sawtooth edge of that pickguard. Yowza!

That's the best looking/sounding Epiphone I've seen in a while. I might have to snag one.
Resonates really well Nice demo sounded great. I really like the tone.
Great video. That guitar looks great to me. I am a bit puzzled by the smallish neck tenon though!
Those pickups sound bright and articulate. I enjoyed the pick attack you used to get tonal contrast.
I am really enjoying your reviews/content! Dig the guitar color.
Amazing video and beautiful Epiphone Les Paul. Great tone.
Greeting from Bordeaux 🍷🎸
I was hoping you would get one of these Col, I was wanting to see your take on it!
14:01 " pay a bit more care and attention to your knobs"...thats good general life advice 😄
Cheers James that’s appreciated! 😁👍🙏
I’m not really Joes fan
(With all dew respect to his skill)
But that guitar looks awesome
If I was searching for LP now
I probably would have checked it out - growing interested in p90s)
Appreciate the review! Cheers Mate
Thanks for this, Colin. I always look forward to your Friday videos.
Wish we could get that here in the UK I'd have been all over it!
Terrific! I was just looking at this guitar on Sweetwater, all week long, and hoping you'd do a video! They're gonna sell a load of them!
I think that the initial excitement followed by a cooling-off period is really normal. It seems like a nice enough guitar, and you do such an excellent job of looking at what you're actually getting for the money spent. Anyway, always enjoy the videos, and glad you keep doing them.
Wish they were still made in Korea like the older Epiphones...+ rosewood fretboards..
A very common phenomenon. That's why many producers/engineers record the "practice take".
Are P90 reverse polarity and reverse wound for hum cancelling?
Quick fix for wonky volume/tone knobs-wrap some Teflon plumbers tape around the shaft, put the knob back on.I’ve found it usually does the trick.
Great review Colin. Just ordered one of these!
Thanks Colin.
Yes, .. the price .. these guitar companies have to be profitable. And if it feels like a secondary thing to play .. that's sort of important.
Great channel. Great review.
Brilliant playing. Thanks 😎
Flip it Colin, always go by your first instinct
You've reminded me that I have an Epiphone 56 Gold top reissue (P90's) made in 1981 on the wall somewhere that I need to give some love to. I think it cost me approx £300 pre-loved (came with a Hiscox case).
They didn't make those in 81 🤔
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 I had previously used various serial number checker site and gotten 1981 but actually you are correct. I checked a few others and despite the serial starting with 1981 (which probably is what fooled those sites), it actually was built in 1988 in Korea. Thanks!
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 Ii had previously used some serial # decoding websites which gave me 1981 but actually you are correct. I rechecked and despite the serial # starting with 1981 (which probably fooled me) it was actually made in 1988 in Korea. Thanks mate!
I've had that inspiration issue with some guitars. But, like relationships and neighborhoods and jobs and anything else that's different at first and then it becomes home, ...you could suddenly find that connection that makes it 'right'.
Totally want this one. All the other reviews have been very gushing so been waiting for a proper honest review!
I genuinely wanted to gush… 🤷♂️
Another great video. Too hard on yerself on the playing front. Your playing has helped and inspired me no end. (Learning to play properly and in a style other than hardcore punk and thrash! 😂)
A guitar must supply something no builder can add.. inspiration.
Please review ESP-LTD and Chapman Guitars, they have plenty of guitars under 700 and I'd love to see how they compare to Epiphone.
Wow that's a great weight!... it think that in itself could make a massive difference to the way it sounds. Glad you love yours enjoy! 😎👍
@@theguitaristas thank you very much. I think you and I have similar feelings about Les Pauls. I keep getting them even though I often realize they aren’t for me, but I do love this one.
I had decided never to fall for a Gibson or Epiphone again. But this one strongly tempted me. It looks really cool,
Nice one Col, I love your honest videos and playing.
Been waiting for this video...Would love to see something around the new Jack Antanoff Gretsch CVT...
Per usual. An epi that needs an immediate upgrade. New wiring would make a huge difference.
Hey Colin, you inadvertently nailed the true colour of this JB Epi in your review. It is, of course, 'Metallic Marmite'! 😂
Just got mine yesterday. With the “ego board”. I love it!
I'm not surprised. After playing 5 top shelf LPs, no wonder. You said yourself you aren't a LP guy, so grab your favorite guitar and play it. The truth will be told.I do it all the time the time. Works for me. You are still a wonderful guitarist!!
😁👍
When I put Speed knobs on my epiphone.. I pushed the pot apart..had to take the nut off bend the little tabs to put it back together..!! So I learn to pull the cover and hold the back of the pot to push them all the way on..!!
Nice video Colin, the price is good, the colour is marmite. You played well and we all get days like that, not always the guitar. Would have liked it in black, or a choice of limited colours.
I got mine a week ago and I really like it. Mine doesn’t have the issues yours has. In particular, I like the pickups.
Wicked! I love the guitar and I want one.
Don't be hard on yourself because i enjoyed it.
Great stuff.
Sweet guitar and great Film 🎥... cheers mate !!!!
You know deep down inside that it’s a little expensive. You can’t fall in love with it. I get it.
I really like the color scheme. Even the tone of the fingerboard suits the finish. But, I was really shocked at the sawtooth edge of that pickguard. Yowza!
Thanks Colin for the heads up on the Jo-Bo SUCKER Punch.
Almost got me. ✌️
