I don’t often comment here, though I’ve been a longtime fan of the channel. However, I felt compelled to speak up today after hearing you being so hard on yourself about your playing this week. Personally, I found it to be beautiful and melodic-some of your best in recent weeks. I just wanted to offer a bit of positive encouragement, as it sounds like you could use it today!👍🏻👍🏻
I ordered one and it should arrive in February. Sometimes when a guitar does not feel right, I have found that after I put it through a full setup the guitar sounds better, inspiring me to play better. Colin, you always sound great!
February? Dang, where did you purchase it from? I noticed a lot of places were only doing preorders and were pushed out until 2025. I feel lucky to have found one in stock ready to ship, and got 15% off.
@@johnnysix7162I ordered it from my local guitar store. Actually, they pre-ordered five of them and I happened to ask if they were getting any. I was told that no other customer asked about it yet.

I'm still planning on getting my hands on one of these at the local shop, however, my expectations have been well tempered after hearing the demo. Thanks for your honesty good sir. It is very much appreciated.
I one hundred percent agree with everything you said about the headstock shape. Epiphone headstocks have their own unique look. Sleek and clean. If you want the Gibson headstock, then buy a Gibson.
The headstock shape on this Les Paul looks great but the older Epiphone shape, with the 'cut off' corners really bugs me. I'm not sure why. I just can't warm to it. Other LP type headstocks, Vintage, Dean, Ltd are OK, just not the Epi clipped-wing style. I know it makes no difference to the sound or the way they play.
Lower priced Epiphones seem to need 1-2 hours of setup time and possibly replacement knobs and switches which if you're not capable add additional cost to the low price. (imo) Great video.
I had 3 Epiphone Les Paul TV yellow specials and the fretwork on all of them was an absolute disgrace. I eventually gave up and just kept the 3rd one and ended up paying over 120 quid to get the frets sorted out. I always wanted a yellow TV special but just couldn't afford the Gibson, so I just spent the extra money and it's doing what it should now. Lovely jubbly.......
I just love coming here and look and some times just start the videos and listen to you talking about guitars and hear your playing colin. It's something relaxing about it keep up the great work
I see that the Epi Greeny can now be bought for about £1K, down from £1499. Another case of Epi setting outrageous prices and finding the public aren't willing to pay them? Maybe at last they are starting to see sense.
Great video as usual, your honesty is to be commended! Don’t be too hard on yourself, we’re all the same, we all have good days & bad day re playing! It’s all part of the journey. Just remember that you continue to inspire people to pick up a guitar & play!👏👏🎶

Yes!!! Thank you buying the JB signature! I thought I would love this guitar with its P90s, but I am so glad I waited to see if you would review it! Fantastic ❤

I was unsure how I felt about my first Gibson Les Paul for the first few months I owned it. I've since really come to understand it, and now it's one of my favorite guitars. 🤘☺️🎸
Even when you don’t think you’re playing well Colin, you’re better than many of us on our best day. But I know what you mean: sometimes it just doesn’t flow; you feel like you’re all thumbs and notes don’t ring or sustain. Great review as usual, and always the most entertaining reviewer on UA-cam. Thanks.
Here in the US, Guitar Center is carrying a Limited Edition Epiphone Les Paul Custom P90 for $799, on sale for $599. It came in a fancy gig bag from the factory. I had been considering the Special P90 but hesitated on the color somewhat. I decided to trade two guitars and an amp for the Custom. Black with gold hardware, P90 Pros, ebony fretboard, and a comfortable weight. I wish I had more details than what GC provides. So, $100 more than the Special for a Custom. I didn't tear it down when I got home, just a setup with the existing strings. I did swap out the black knobs for the ones from my Standard 60s. I like the looks better, and one of the stock knobs was wonky, btw. I'm definitely keeping this one! I read about the Joe B 55. I think what I have is good enough for me.
I love the look and even the price seems reasonable with the hard case, but I promised myself after buying my first Eastman that Gibson/Epiphone won’t get another penny of my hard earned fella! And them P90s are the same as my Wilshire reissue, ain’t very good to be honest 😎👊 might be worth modding with a couple of Lolla P90s to see the potential 🤔
Colin, good post as usual. I'm done with Epiphone, at least the ones made in the far east. I'm a Strat guy but I do have an Epiphone 2021 Lucille, which is my go to( I modified it by installing a short Maestro Vibrola). I believe you're getting robbed with the Epiphone Les Paul's but this Bonamassa Les Paul is a bit more authentic than the usual models. To my naked eye the body dimensions seem correct, at least. This model seems like a better deal than the current Inspired by Custom Shop models!
Col. When you were at home the strings were in the stop tail centres - in the studio you'd top wrapped them. Maybe check the bridge posts and needs more pressure on the bridge???? just a thought on what makes some lp's work and some not (bit of my own rabbit hole here)
Colin, never put you're playing down it's cool some guitars inspire, and some don't. I really enjoy the channel. As do the people that follow your reviews.
Good afternoon, Colin. I'm really not liking the guitar. I do like the copper color and the body color is really nice. The quality of the pick guard and the knobs really turned me off. Once you played your first set, I thought it sounded dull and lifeless. You are right, it is not singing. Pickup height adjustment may be critical with this guitar. Overall, I really don't like it. Your playing was as always and that is great. If the guitar doesn't meld with you, you won't FEEL the guitar. I would have expected better for the price, but maybe you paid for the JOE name and not the Epiphone. I've had some superb Epiphones and none ever sounded like this one. I have an SG with P90s and it sounds better than this one and it was 400 Euros. I say sell it and find something that goes with your heart and soul. Win some, lose some. Have a great weekend.
I currently own 2 Epi’s one has the club neck the other a modern sculpted neck. I love the club neck and really dislike the modern neck. If a guitar doesn’t feel right to you it will never feel at home in your hands.
@@richardsveum8452 this is fact, Richard. I believe a player can pick up ANY guitar and play it to some degree, but the real heart of the playing is in the connection one has with an instrument. For nearly every man is a woman, but one will never get the mate that fits and works completely. Guitars and people have to have a continuity to make the best sound and feeling come to life. Reviews and ratings are subjective for sure. You may love the club neck, others may go...bleh, that's shit, but what is right for one is not for the other. I make the most of my budget guitars and yes, some are like step-children, but still need the love and best I can give them. Your comment is perfect. It's about feel and connectivity. Rock on my friend, rock on.
I did wonder whether you were a bit critical of this guitar in part because of that comparison of more expensive Les Pauls (Gibson, Heritage, Eastman, Maybach) you did recently. Looking at it from a slightly different angle, I think it is important to get to that stage where you can tell the nuances between the "expensive, good quality" guitar and a "mid-price, medium quality" ones. The question is how much are you willing to pay for these nuances.
I've had that inspiration issue with some guitars. But, like relationships and neighborhoods and jobs and anything else that's different at first and then it becomes home, ...you could suddenly find that connection that makes it 'right'.
Don’t be so hard on yourself brother we all have our off days mate. You have a good and smooth weekend . I would probably change out the parts and maybe try some Seymour Duncan pups in there but I thought they sounded OK. I wouldn’t take it out of bed lol.
That's part of the problem. With the quality of so many other Chinese guitars dramatically improving, there's absolutely no reason to pay more for a dicey Chinese Epiphone.
In my opinion there's nothing wrong with your playing, its absolutely great, i love tuning in and enjoy your bluesy improvs cuz that was mostly the kind of vibes i used to have when i used to sit down with my semi hollow and just see where it would go. I quite enjoy the sound of this guitar, i love p90s and one of my plans was to modify my guitar and put a pair of those instead of the humbuckers.
Hey Colin, I recently bought three preowned Epiphone LPs. 2008, 2013, 2020. I also own a 2009. I won’t bore you with the models. All look, feel, play great!. I love them all. I plan to sell one and replace with a Standard ‘59 Outfit. The color of this one doesn’t appeal to me. The wonky knob is a disappointment. Thank you for an honest review. The pickups sound just ok. I wanted to be excited about this guitar. Especially the P90s. So far, the demos I’ve listened to haven’t excited me. Your playing was fine and Absolutely serves the purpose as far as I’m concerned. I personally prefer hearing clean tones and with a bit of OD. Thanks for doing that. I don’t need or want to hear shredding with tons of distortion. Cheers mate.
I’m not really Joes fan (With all dew respect to his skill) But that guitar looks awesome If I was searching for LP now I probably would have checked it out - growing interested in p90s)
Nice one Col, I love your honest videos and playing. I was interested to learn about this model and when it was announced my first thought was "ooo, I hope Col's getting one!" 😂 Look forward to next week mate
I really like the color scheme. Even the tone of the fingerboard suits the finish. But, I was really shocked at the sawtooth edge of that pickguard. Yowza!
You've reminded me that I have an Epiphone 56 Gold top reissue (P90's) made in 1981 on the wall somewhere that I need to give some love to. I think it cost me approx £300 pre-loved (came with a Hiscox case).
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 I had previously used various serial number checker site and gotten 1981 but actually you are correct. I checked a few others and despite the serial starting with 1981 (which probably is what fooled those sites), it actually was built in 1988 in Korea. Thanks!
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 Ii had previously used some serial # decoding websites which gave me 1981 but actually you are correct. I rechecked and despite the serial # starting with 1981 (which probably fooled me) it was actually made in 1988 in Korea. Thanks mate!
Nice honest review. No need for apologies for not liking it as much as you hoped to. If a guitar doesn't inspire you, regardless of price, it just doesn't.
Thank you for another great review. I got one of these at my local shop last weekend and did a video about it on my small channel. I absolutely loved mine. The knobs were perfectly installed and work extremely well. The guy at the shop commented on how light it was and I agreed- I got it home and weighed it to find mine is 7 pounds 10 ounces. I think it goes to show one of the big differences between inexpensive and expensive guitars. There is more consistency in an expensive guitar than an inexpensive guitar. It is much more a roll of the dice as to what the quality of the individual guitar will be when it is more affordable- one might be blessed and get one with no issues that is super light (for a Les Paul) like mine or get one that is heavier with a few issues like this one. I’d say two PRS core models, for example, would be much more likely to be uniformly almost perfect.
@@theguitaristas thank you very much. I think you and I have similar feelings about Les Pauls. I keep getting them even though I often realize they aren’t for me, but I do love this one.
Nothing can beat your Goldtop Les Paul in Epiphone range. Would love you compare the special Gold one with your actual Les Paul, ie the custom and the eastman.
Thanks Colin. Yes, .. the price .. these guitar companies have to be profitable. And if it feels like a secondary thing to play .. that's sort of important.
Aloha Colin! I wanted a P 90 Les Paul. Thanks for you honesty. I ordered a Warmoth mahogany Jazzmaster body with a 24.75 mahogany and ebony board neck. I got Murray's Staple neck, P 90 bridge. So P 90 LP can wait.
Nice guitar, Colin. Cool video. Thank you. I've been looking at a Sire L7V. It features p90 pups. I like it in a gold top. Nice to see Epiphone is at least offering a les paul with 90s, though. Cheers
Actually, that neck tenon is the normal production style for Epiphones. We're just spoiled now, because so many of the premium models have the wide and deep tenon. Technically, that's the normal build method for that spec, thus the $849 price.
I'm definitely going to try one for myself. I also have been waiting for a P90 epiphone les paul. How funny that you sometimes think your playing is a bit off and I think hey I'll steal that bit or chords for myself. Another great video. Cheers
Reckon your playing was just as usual: Great! That’s one of the usps of this channel, how you always find this light relaxed flow of rock’n’roll. And as for the guitar: maybe you shouldn’t compare it so much to other Les Pauls, as to to other P90 equipped guitars.
I'm not surprised. After playing 5 top shelf LPs, no wonder. You said yourself you aren't a LP guy, so grab your favorite guitar and play it. The truth will be told.I do it all the time the time. Works for me. You are still a wonderful guitarist!!
Nice video Colin, the price is good, the colour is marmite. You played well and we all get days like that, not always the guitar. Would have liked it in black, or a choice of limited colours.
It may not be as expensive as a Gibson, but for that amount of money it shouldn't have problems like those with the knobs and pickup alignment. It's not a cheap guitar either, after all.
Beautiful color, reminds me of Beck’s Oxblood LP. Tightening down the tuning machines ensuring snug at each string may improve high sustained frequencies. Just got an Eastman SB55N a couple weeks back. More money, doesn’t look at all Oxblood. Always enjoyed every Epiphone I have played. Still, glad I was able to obtain Eastman. They are my personal favorite manufacturer. I am biased and opinionated. Prepared to argue my perspective 😊✌️🫶🎉
Great review! I always enjoy your playing, and sound. I have Epiphones that I really like, but, theres no excuse for shipping new guitars with any problems, in my opinion. I hear that a budget guitar brand called Firefly sells guitars with rosewood boards, stainless steel frets, and a bone nut for $200. I think thats interesting.
Thanks for this, Colin! Recently I got a specially made for Guitar Center Epiphone LP Custom (in black) that has 2 p-90s, ebony board and thicker, rounder neck profile. It is an excellent instrument and also came in around $800. You would like it, I bet...
I just got one for $721 USD shipped. I love the look of it, big fan of the P90's, and absolutely love the color. BTW I share the same problems as you with recording anything, I can literally be playing the thing I want to record effortlessly moments before, then I hit record and feels like I skipped a few weeks back in practice.
Another great video. Too hard on yerself on the playing front. Your playing has helped and inspired me no end. (Learning to play properly and in a style other than hardcore punk and thrash! 😂)
I like the guitar but I gotta put my hands on it. The color is awesome and I love P90S so will see. Great episode as usual, enjoy your weekend Sir 👍. ☮️❤️🎸

I’m not really Joes fan
(With all dew respect to his skill)
But that guitar looks awesome
If I was searching for LP now
I probably would have checked it out - growing interested in p90s)
Nice one Col, I love your honest videos and playing. I was interested to learn about this model and when it was announced my first thought was "ooo, I hope Col's getting one!" 😂 Look forward to next week mate
Thanks Colin for the heads up on the Jo-Bo SUCKER Punch.
Almost got me. ✌️
I got mine a week ago and I really like it. Mine doesn’t have the issues yours has. In particular, I like the pickups.
They didn't make those in 81 🤔
@@alexandermclaughlin3978 I had previously used various serial number checker site and gotten 1981 but actually you are correct.
Been waiting for this video...Would love to see something around the new Jack Antanoff Gretsch CVT...
Just got mine yesterday. With the “ego board”. I love it!
I know the weekend has arrived when Carl uploads a video, it’s part of my routine now.
Colin's vids are pretty good too. Carl is overrated IMO. 😉
3:28 this is the best dad’s joke of the day 😂
I’m embarrassed! 😂👍
Don’t be… I loved it!
😂
Wicked! I love the guitar and I want one.
Don't be hard on yourself because i enjoyed it.
Great stuff.
Hey Colin, you inadvertently nailed the true colour of this JB Epi in your review. It is, of course, 'Metallic Marmite'! 😂
A guitar must supply something no builder can add.. inspiration.
Why does no one remove the pickup covers on P-90's like on humbucking pickups? Your playing is absolutely fine!!! That's a sweet Les Paul!!!
Nice honest review. No need for apologies for not liking it as much as you hoped to. If a guitar doesn't inspire you, regardless of price, it just doesn't.
I was wondering when you all would do another Les Paul video. Nice one
Wow that's a great weight!... it think that in itself could make a massive difference to the way it sounds. Glad you love yours enjoy! 😎👍
@@theguitaristas thank you very much. I think you and I have similar feelings about Les Pauls. I keep getting them even though I often realize they aren’t for me, but I do love this one.
Well done, Col, getting a review that quick ! Why don´t you put it aside and try later to see if you feel the same ?
I had decided never to fall for a Gibson or Epiphone again. But this one strongly tempted me. It looks really cool,
Flip it Colin, always go by your first instinct
It doesn’t have P90s, but the Jerry Cantrell “wino” Epiphone LP is nice for the price.
Nothing can beat your Goldtop Les Paul in Epiphone range. Would love you compare the special Gold one with your actual Les Paul, ie the custom and the eastman.
Got mine last week. Sounds great. Looks AWESOME. And plus, it wasn't a ton of money. Gods I wish I could play as well.
Nice project Victor!! Maybe I should put a set of those pups and a bigsby on this? 🤔
😁👍
Nice video Colin, the price is good, the colour is marmite. You played well and we all get days like that, not always the guitar. Would have liked it in black, or a choice of limited colours.
Sweet guitar and great Film 🎥... cheers mate !!!!
Wish we could get that here in the UK I'd have been all over it!
Yeah my man, I bet you'll keep it before watching it, cheers Col!!
A very common phenomenon. That's why many producers/engineers record the "practice take".
Another great video. Too hard on yerself on the playing front. Your playing has helped and inspired me no end. (Learning to play properly and in a style other than hardcore punk and thrash! 😂)
Agree about the headstock. The "open book Gibson" headstock shape feels silly to me on an Epiphone.
Agree
People used to get the old Japanese ones here so I thought it was normal.
Well, why? Squiers have the same headstocks a Fenders after all.
Looks silly*, not feels silly. And honestly you'll just have to get over things that don't cause problems.
@@didamnesia3575 says who ? You lol
I enjoy your playing. Thank you.
I like the guitar but I gotta put my hands on it. The color is awesome and I love P90S so will see. Great episode as usual, enjoy your weekend Sir 👍. ☮️❤️🎸
