Gibson Iommi Special vs Chibson Monkey w. Jaydee Pickups

- A few people in my last video asked me to compare the new Gibson Tony Iommi SG Special to the 'Monkey' they saw on the wall. The 'Monkey' is a Chibson that I had built a couple years back. It has 'Monkey' Pickups and Wiring Harness from Jaydee Guitars.
Strings were changed on Gibson to match what is on the Chibson.
Both guitars were recorded through my Iommi setting on a @fractalaudiosystems AX8 through an Audient interface at same input gain. There are absolutely NO effects to level out the guitars. You are hearing them as they were recorded into the computer.
The striking difference that I hear, especially in the higher register on the solo licks is the attack of the 'monkey' pickups in the Chibson. It has a VERY unique attack almost like a metal guitar pick (I use a standard 1.0mm gauge pick from InTune Guitar Picks).
What differences do you hear?

Awesom playing, doesn't matter the guitar (hardware), the player (software) is the main determinant.
I appreciate! You are correct, that hardware makes the last 5-10%. As a big fan of Iommi though, the hardware helps get that “Tony” sound. Cheers!
Nice work! Both seem excellent.
The Chibson had a wonky neck, but it does sound good
That took a lot of work to make. Thanks for doing it
Cheers!
Great demo Mike
Thank you!!
A very good A/B of the two pickups Mike. To my ears the Gibosons sound more a bit darker - more compressed or squashed, whereas the Jaydee ones are gnarly and biting. I think both have their place given the variety of tones on the various early Sabbath albums. I'll have one of each please! 🤩🎸🎸
Thanks brother! I agree the Gibson sounds more like the first two albums, JayDee pickups sounds like MoR or V4! You should buy one!!
I agree mostly with what others have said here, and they both do sound great. However, a major factor that needs to be taken into account is the guitars themselves…different pieces of woods etc., two different examples might yield different results with the two pickup sets.
I don’t disagree. Realistically there’s maybe a 10% difference overall. In the end I think this shows with good electronics and hardware even a cheap import can keep up with a $2500 guitar.
They both sound fantastic! The Gibsons are just a hair more subdued and a hair fatter and the Jaydee’s are just a little brighter/sharper.
Yes, more body to the p90, more bite from the JayDee pickups.
@@DrOMEB perfect description brother! Body vs bite, I like that!🔥🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@remembertheblacksabbath Tony’s tone did get more Bite in it around Master of Reality and Volume 4. Which is about the time he modified the pickups I believe.
@@DrOMEB perfect analysis brother. Especially during the Dio era. Much more bite. And where the bite really pierces the eardrums in on Born Again. As shoddy as the production is overall there are still some stellar aspects to it. And his soloing tones cut through like a knife!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@remembertheblacksabbath I read somewhere that the Born Again tapes were found!
Jaydee pickups are powerful, what an amazing tone, sound like Sabbath records!
Yes, they have that snarl that is very present on the later records. The Gibson sounds more like the first 3 records.
Very nice comparison video of the Gibson P90's for Monkey and the JayDee Custom Guitars Monkey pickup set. The JD pickups sound like the sidewinder style as they are hum cancelling where the P90's do not. You can hear that in the opening as you move the two guitars. Love them both.
The p90s are surprisingly quieter than I expected in terms of noise. I give a Gibson p94 in one of my other guitars and have used it live. No screaming feedback at all at high gain. So they must have modernized the pickups.
@@DrOMEB At least they are potted, unlike the original '60s SG Specials. My '66 had unpotted P90's and they squealed with higher gain like the treble booster, so had them wax potted and problem solved.
@@HAL2001 the original pickups in the Chibson were unpotted. That was entertaining!
@@DrOMEB Yes, that will be a squeal fest! :o
luv this guy!
Aww shucks!
Looove this!💕😎🎼🎸
I love you
The P90s sound very, very good (I bet it is also the musician, that is you, and the setup), but Jaydee's pickups sound more bright and punchy to my ears. One should see how well these two pickups interact with a P Bass sound (Geezer's). Thanks for sharing, Mike.
The Gibson is how it came out of the box, short of changing the strings. I like both guitars, Gibson sounds like the first two albums. The Jaydee sounds like MoR or Vol4 which is I believe when Tony modified the pickups.
Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!
Tone capacitor value is vital too...and 500k pots vs 250s,..
I hear a little higher pitch tone on the monkey a slight twang almost. I'm guessing same string on both if the? I am going with the SG for the meatier sound!!
Yes the same strings. I do really like the meat of the Gibson, it’s not like the first two albums.
Hey Mike could you give me a children of the grave video. Like to see how exactly you play it. Bad azz beat.
Especially that quick transition lick
Well I can show the right way to do it. I learned to play that in drop D flat, not C# standard and that’s how I play it live because it’s more comfortable to sing over.
And of course the obvious....the Gibby Tony will increase in value over time. I'm expecting these to sell out real soon. Once that happens the cost will skyrocket. I remember when the Jimmy Page and even the Ace Frehley versions came out. Now they're worth a lot of money. Artist Editions are always a sound investment. Also custom Shop Fenders.
Yes!!! I’ve been told they are a limited run of 2100 but I don’t know how true that is! Most places were out the next day.
Monkey has more sparkle and openness. Stock P90s are damn fine, just tighter and less raspy. But, I dig the rasp.
Also, why does that opening lick in Fairies kick my ass?
Fairies is a pain because it’s hard to keep the index barred across and not fret out notes! lol
Hey man … Great post ! How are you digging the neck profile on the Gibson ?
I actually am! This is one of the most comfortable playing guitars that I own. I'm quite impressed with it. I actually am very excited to play it live, which will be the real test.
@@DrOMEB Awesome man ! Good to hear !
Have one coming in a few days .
I couldn’t resist…keep the videos coming and give us a live test review ..
Again great posts !
@@anthonynaples6713 Thanks and hope you enjoy it! There a video review similar to this one with just the Gibson guitar if you want to hear more tones. Will definitely update the live review.
Which Monkey set do you recommend for later Iommi tones? The hot or regular Monkey set? Thanks!
The Jaydee set (hotter) is more accurate for later tones.
@@DrOMEB great thanks!
Hi. Whats the brand of the strings? Thanks
I use Black Diamond Strings
Oyeah you rock buddy i want to jam with you
Let’s figure out how to make it happen
@@DrOMEB ok what do you want me to do
I hear a better tone from the Gibson. There is more meat on the bone in that tone.
Yes, the Gibson is thicker for sure! The Jaydee pickups have better presence.
But the guitar overall sounds thin/cheaper... I would like to hear those pickups in the same guitar for a true sound of the pickup...
@@garyranks7623 I’m on the fence about modifying the Gibson. It’s a limited run from what I understand. Don’t want to do anything to devalue it.
I agree mostly with what others have said here, and they both do sound great. However, a major factor that needs to be taken into account is the guitars themselves…different pieces of woods etc., two different examples might yield different results with the two pickup sets.
