I love it! This is an anthem for me and all other women of color who are fed up with stereotypes and fetishization by mainstream media. Thank you Ms. Hammad.
This poem is about men oogling over women of colour and treating them like an exotic 'prize'. Of course not all men do this, but there are some who do (often white men). They will be enthralled by women just because of their ethnicity, and treat them like some wild animal or a 'prize'. This is what she is talking about.
This is one of MY Favorites!!! I am not out of the ordinary by not being white. I am just a plain jane girl and not anyone's exotic. She took the words out of my mouth. I belong to me and I define myself.
this is my life as a Pakistani woman mostly from older white men they treat me like an object not like a human being. I am so happy to hear this very well said
I guess I interpreted the meaning not from the speaker's words, but the overwhelming feeling of humiliation me and my fellow male classmates experienced. I am attracted to women of many colours and ethnicity, but in no way do i personally feel this attraction manifested in a way that may make an individual feel uncomfortable or typecast as some sort of exotic possession to be held or observed. I just feel that any sort of gender "empowerment" works backwards in creating gender equality insociety
Ah, I see you are the "good guy". You won't degrade women or sexually exploit them. No, you'll just talk down to them, and call them "whores". Even if she had slept with the men she is talking about in this poem (which I'm pretty sure she probably hasn't and this poem is about ((I think)) how she is sexualized and her race is used by society is general to repress her as a person and make her simply a sexual object) that would have been her choice and not make her in any way a "slut" or "whore".
I had to sit through this rubbish in my Healthy sexuality 401 class only to get glared at and treated second rate for my gender. Is that what this poem is about? Revenge? I don't deny that certain if not many opportunities in life are unavailable to women, particularly in developing countries where in some cases they are treated like animals which is upsetting to admit. Feminism in the developed world however only strengthens gender borders by provoking hostile behavior towards men.
"the beat of my lashes against each other ain't some dark desert beat, it's just a blink."
