Today (12/11/23) is Mos Def’s 50th birthday I saw on IG so I came to look up some of my favs form this show he hosted. It wasn’t this one, it was Mayda Del Valle in a blue tube top and the last line was something like “how much a man loves me!” I was 😮15 yo when I first watched that performance on UA-cam, it fucking changed me. Like a big turning point in my life. I just went thru my first breakup hahah my first love and man what did I know back then? But her poetry, her passionate delivery did something to my soul that was probably my first real experience with catharsis and being self aware in the moment when it happened. It’s been a while since I tapped into this space of spoken word poetry. I used to write and perform at open mics too but after the pandemic and a few other things, I fell off…. But my writing has turned into a different direction now I guess:) I’m so thankful for the various expressions. I’m so thankful that a poetry show like this was once on television boy was that a time. Anyways happy birthday to Mos Def, and miss Mayda, wherever you are, I hope life is treating you deliciously! Thank you for your potent poetic medicine and the incredible bars. Still a major inspiration to this day to this lil 90s bebé
