As an ex muslim i agree and disagree. The hijab is definitely a form of subjugation but that's not the reason for the hijab. The hijab concept in islam was invented by Umar and it's original purpose was to be able to differentiate between free women and slave women.

Hijab was introduced to differentiate between a free woman and a slave woman. Thus, in Islam a slave woman cannot wear Hijab. Fair point. But early Christians were hardly united in beliefs about the teachings of Christ. If we get that impression today it’s only because some views ‘won’ by becoming mainstream then reinterpreted until they could be seen as a somewhat cohesive whole. I’d prefer to look back earlier into the history of the Abrahamic religions to their polytheistic roots where there were even female deities.

Amen. Here is my take on “modesty”. It often comes from those poverty regions and the tribe’s religions where girls AND women were bought and sold as wives or concubines as property to increase a families wealth. Where the vaginal cleanliness of the virgin was a huge selling point! (So they better be young and always covered up and kept locked away from male access.). Covering them head to toe ensures random men have no clue what is under that bundle. Conversely in tropical societies -just as hot as the desert but where there is plenty of food-Most tribal peoples were more egalitarian and the women often went bare chested and were free to pick their own mate more often. it’s not a firm rule of course because people migrate with their culture intact… Old world religion has spread this modesty stuff worldwide thru colonizers guns and bully tactics.
The verse literally says you can only do this if there is war, and kids dont have a father, and the mother needs protection while in danger. The reason for marriage is only to protect children who could end up as slaves and the mother taken away. Try reading the full verse even though mainstream islam allows marrying more than one women in all circumstances.

There is shortage of men (not women), and children without a father will suffer at that time and location. So its only allowed in the purpose of helping kids, but not to marry. The Quran verse specifically and clearly mentions your intentions have to be in help of orphans without a father. Im not saying its right or wrong, im personally against multiple marriages, and its not useful in todays society because we dont have shortage of men, and women play a big role in todays society, so children wont suffer without a father.

Please don't speak for Muslim women or Islam. If you'd actually read, the Qur'an gives women the right to her own property, she can work if she wants, her money is her own. A woman can be a millionaire and the husband be a janitor making low wages but islamically the man has to pay for her food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, etc. Her money is for her alone, anything she spends on her family is written as a charity for her, but for the man its a religious obligation and if he ignores this he is sinful. Women have the right to education, many of the early scholars of islam were women, the oldest university in the world was built in Morocco by a Muslim woman. Women have the choice in who they marry, they are even given a maher/dowery which is theirs alone. women don't have to change their last name either. If you look back in history, women in Europe/USA were the husband's property. Taking the man's last name was to show others she was his property. My grandma, a Christian born and raised in the USA couldn't own property without her husband's name being on it and that was in the 1960s. If you look in the bible women were told to cover their heads. Do you think the same of Amish, Mennonites, German Baptists or Catholic nuns since all these women cover for their Lord as well? In Islam we can either to choose to obey God or disobey God. Hijab should not be forced, that is culture, not the religion. The Quran says "there's no compulsion in religion". If this religion was built for men, why do the men have to bust their humps to work to provide for the family? "Marry two three or four but if you cannot deal between them justly then marry only one". Before this revelation was sent down men had no limit to their wives among the Jews, Christians and the Pagan Arabs. Men entering Islam actually had to divorce wives to get to the allowed amount. Men are head of the household. Think of it this way, if you have two captains flying a plane or steering a ship, it would be a disaster. Someone has to take the lead and the other can guide and advise as needed. If you read about the prophet's life he was always seeking advice from his wives. I have a wife and dont wear a ring because Islam teaches me never to wear it as property. This is not just me but many Muslims do not practice the West practice of putting a ring on the spouse. Not only this but we have seperate bank accounts. I can never touch my wife's money. Period. And whatever i gave her she owns it. It is because even today Women's rights are still not valued while in the Muslim world the education of women are high. Women are only subjugated by the Hijab if they are forced them to wear it. Many Islamic women in the west wear the Hijab because they choose to wear it & they confess to this reality. Regarding the impression of dress norms across human societies modesty can be a powerful concept, however it shouldn't be forced on people rather there shouid be liberty & free will.

It often comes from those poverty regions and the tribe’s religions where girls AND women were bought and sold as wives or concubines as property to increase a families wealth. Where the vaginal cleanliness of the virgin was a huge selling point! (So they better be young and always covered up and kept locked away from male access.). Covering them head to toe ensures random men have no clue what is under that bundle. Conversely in tropical societies -just as hot as the desert but where there is plenty of food-Most tribal peoples were more egalitarian and the women often went bare chested and were free to pick their own mate more often. it’s not a firm rule of course because people migrate with their culture intact… Old world religion has spread this modesty stuff worldwide thru colonizers guns and bully tactics.

The verse literally says you can only do this if there is war, and kids dont have a father, and the mother needs protection while in danger. The reason for marriage is only to protect children who could end up as slaves and the mother taken away. There is shortage of men (not women), and children without a father will suffer at that time and location. So its only allowed in the purpose of helping kids, but not to marry. The Quran verse specifically and clearly mentions your intentions have to be in help of orphans without a father.

If you'd actually read, the Qur'an gives women the right to her own property, she can work if she wants, her money is her own. A woman can be a millionaire and the husband be a janitor making low wages but islamically the man has to pay for her food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, etc. Her money is for her alone, anything she spends on her family is written as a charity for her, but for the man its a religious obligation and if he ignores this he is sinful. Women have the right to education, many of the early scholars of islam were women, the oldest university in the world was built in Morocco by a Muslim woman. Women have the choice in who they marry, they are even given a maher/dowery which is theirs alone. women don't have to change their last name either. If you look back in history, women in Europe/USA were the husband's property. Taking the man's last name was to show others she was his property. My grandma, a Christian born and raised in the USA couldn't own property without her husband's name being on it and that was in the 1960s.

In Islam we can either to choose to obey God or disobey God. Hijab should not be forced, that is culture, not the religion. The Quran says "there's no compulsion in religion". As Muslims we believe Islam is perfect but Muslims and human beings are imperfect, they have their flaws, and the law in most Muslim countries is not Islamic at all. My husband never forced me to wear hijab. I proudly pick out my own clothes and hijabs thank you.
If this religion was built for men, why do the men have to bust their humps to work to provide for the family? Why not make the wives work as slaves out in the world and use all their income to pay for the man's lap of luxury where he can sit at home and not do a single thing? If it was for men, why stop at 4 wives, or why even have wives? Why not side chicks? Why would they forbid certain sexual acts (sodomy and intercourse during menstruation/postpartum bleeding)? Men are head of the household. Think of it this way, if you have two captains flying a plane or steering a ship, it would be a disaster. Someone has to take the lead and the other can guide and advise as needed. If you read about the prophet's life he was always seeking advice from his wives.

personally this idea that my freedom is in how much of my body i can show was more for men than it ever was for me. this idea that to be liberated i should go out and show myself to the world while men have the freedom to stare at me all they want and imagine the grossest things about me is something i whole heartedly believe was fed to us by men themselves and western women just haven’t realized how much they’re being taken advantage of because of this idea.

i would get honked at and stared at and guys would talk about how i looked right behind or in front of me.
guys didn’t take me seriously and only saw me as a hookup because obviously if i’m meeting up with them and i’m dressed a certain way i’m not one to be respected if i’m willing to let them see intimate parts of myself without them even trying. i got played way more and disrespected way more in promiscuous clothing than i ever did in hijab.
i started to feel disgusted with the way men were viewing me and as i started to learn more about islam i came to the conclusion that this was the truth and that whatever was commanded was not for the creators benefit by for our benefit. the second i started wearing hijab and covering what was obligatory in islam to be covered men no longer looked at me that way anymore. it wasn’t a sexual stare anymore it was just curiosity with my dress or they would see my face and then quickly look away as if they committed a sin by casting their eyes on me even if they weren’t muslim.
