As someone with a background in music composition- I’ll point out to all my fellow fans that when Maynard screams Gooooooo for 25 seconds, he is also on a specific pitch. He chose the MOST dissonant (clashing) pitch - the tritone created by being a half step down from the 5th (dominant p5) - it creates a sense of anguish that when he releases and it fades out leaving the rest of the band on the root creates a BEAUTIFUL release sonically- which coincides with the meaning of the lyrics at that point.
    Bloody brilliant.

I always find it funny to hear Maynard talk about his role in the band. He always down plays it. While the music is pure genius, the lyrics themselves as well as how Maynards gets that across to us, the listener, is nothing short of brilliant!

"take this leaden grudge and turn into gold" this one line is so meaningful to me. it helped me transmutate myself while going through a divorce. as I took it and applied it: use the energy being put to holding onto the grudge/suffering/misery and redirect it to something positive. it helped me pull myself up out of the depths, and grow into a much more aware, centered, and wiser man.

That insanely long, primal scream that Maynard executes to perfection towards the end of the track always represented to me the barer of The Grudge releasing years of pent up resentment/anger that they held onto towards someone and finally being freed of the weight that carrying The Grudge had in their life. Tools music speaks to your soul and I know that sounds corny af lol but it’s true like you said Imo all mainstream music now is superficial, materialistic and very low IQ, the replayability of tools music will last a life time, there’s nothing instantaneously gratifying about it, the music is something that sticks with you and makes you think about life and everything that’s led up to now and helps you hold onto the good and let go of the bad, the music creeps in on you, gets into your head your heart and makes itself comfortable and you as the listener you are okay with it 🌀 the journey never ends so just sit back and ride the spiral to the end and you may just go where no one’s been

Saturn represents the changing point in someone’s life, when Saturn comes back around it’s called a great conjunction it happens every 27.5 years, during this time a person can choose to let go of their bitter hatred resentments and grudges or be dragged down by them and suffer, we just had one of these events in Dec 2020, the choose 1 or 10 part refers to the Kabbalistic tree of life, When Maynard screams for 20+ seconds that’s him letting go of all the negative he has held onto, Tool writes the deepest most spiritual music in the world the rabbit hole goes so deep you’d think it’s never ending lol, everything this band does is not on accident, there are no coincidences with Tool, they arrange there music in spiritual and mathematical patterns like the Fibonacci sequence, they are masters at their craft and conveying a message, you’ll sooner or later find it’s not just music it’s an awakening, Tool released the opiate EP in 1992, and then Fear Inoculum in 2019, that’s around 10,000 days apart (also the name of their 4th studio album) and 10,000 days is roughly the amount of days that’s in 27.5 years, the approximate time it’s take for Saturn to return and have a great conjunction, if anyone and I mean ANYONE thinks that’s just coincidence they are 100% undeniably full of shit 😂

The crown refers to the crown chakra on the Kabbalistic tree of life, which is the concept and basis for the whole album, the album starts at 1 to get to 7 in order to reach the crown, this song is the first step and is the first track on the album and it represents the root chakra, it details Maynard’s entire journey from 1 to 7, 7 being the holy Trinity (Disposition, Reflection, Triad) which equals the crown on the tree of life, I should also add that the element related to saturn (the root) is lead and the crown is gold… in other words it’s the greatest fucking album ever made 😂🤘🌀

vvvvvvvery close. OR! vvvvvvery similar to what i've found:
      (bare with me #thepot)
      did you know... ?
tracks 1-13 directly correlate with 13-chakra system*?
and that the album is playing UPWARDS?!?!!?!?
this is why you hear a lift/elevator start up at 0:00:00
watch leafy eye in parabola m/v, climb up thru chakras.
that is precisely how LATERALUS tracklist is constructed.
(lateralus album artwork itself basically shows same thing)
      :)
v is for vagina also does this.
      1. opening credits QUEEN B
2-9. 8 chakra system (as "in flight" movie) ...see album liner artwork
      10. closing credits REV 2020
very weeeird creative rubric if you ask me, but totally fucking awesome.
there's a takeoff moment, metaphor of 8/13-chakra system, come down.
& tracklist flows upwards, as if to simulate sequential chakra stimulation.
um. so. v is for vagina starts you on the vagina airlines tarmack, queen b.
heading down the runway, before take off. hence meditative breathing...
(i think we're in quadruple entendre territory at this point)
then dozo. "rotate." in air. flying. in-joying "in-flight movie", great metaphor.
then!!! holy shit... bill hicks fans will appreciate this, mjk likes to pay homage.
album artwork is basically a brochure for "what to do in case of uh oh".
by end, REV 2020, last instructives, parachuting jesus floats from fireball airplane.
anyways, here's the bill hicks transcript:
"There are dick jokes on the way, ladies and gentlemen. Please relax. Feelin' a little tension in the room here. "He hasn't told any dick jokes. Doesn't he know he's in America? Doesn't he know about our Puritanical self-hatred of our own body and its desires; the only way we can find relief is through the medium of penis material?"
Yeah, I'm totally aware of where I am. Don't worry. The dick jokes are on their way. Here's the deal, ladies and gentlemen. I editorialize for forty minutes- the last ten minutes we pull our chutes and float down to Dick Joke Island together. 'Kay? And we will rest our weary heads against the big, thick veined trunks of dick jokes while we sit in our big, cushiony bean bag scrotum chairs and giggle away the dawn like any good American comedy club audience." [this was from his very last performance, igbys '94]
(in other words, entire art concept for v is for vagina amounts to ..."dick jokes")
this is how bill hicks lives on.
LATERALUS however! starts with industrial elevator! ends in ALIEN ABDUCTION!
so... idk... (i mean i kinda do... metaphor ties together quite nicely w/ art bell bit)
      * fact APC name's album 13th step, is not a coincidence

If you could condense an entire Tool concert into one song, it would be The Grudge.
It starts with the mechanical sound before the first note is played. As if the elevator is taking you to the next level.
Then, the peaks and valleys of intensity to sublime.
The ending of this song is epic!
From the moment Maynard screams for 25 seconds continuously, through to the final note played, it is perfect!

June 2001, I walk into a FYE music store before my shift at The Cheesecake Factory and they had like 20 or so albums up on the wall with headphones to listen to them before you buy. I see the new Tool album and think the cover art is bizarre yet cool. I toss on the headphones and listen to The Grudge as the album opener. I proceeded to stand there and listen to this whole song thinking it was the best fucking thing I ever heard. Their preceding Aenima album is great but this was just a whole different level of a different kind of awesomeness. I listened to the song 3 times since I couldn’t pause or rewind. I walked in late to my shift because of this song! After I made enough money in tips, I ran over to the store to buy it so it couldn’t sell out. I couldn’t stop listening to it over and over.
