Help! There’s a Natural Gas Leak Inside My House | How To Perform a Gas Pressure Test

  • Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
  • Upon arrival we performed a gas pressure test on the natural gas piping in the home. System could not maintain 4psi of pressure. After some discussion with the homeowner we were given the permission to proceed. We found a concealed 1" union above the laundry room ceiling.
This is a code violation of 2010 Fuel Gas Code of NY 404.3 Piping in Concealed Locations which clearly states: portions of a piping system installed in concealed locations shall not have unions, tubing fittings, right an left couplings, bushings, compression couplings and swing joints made by a combinations of fittings.

Most home owners don't know building code and you hope you have the right contractors to do the job right. I think the building inspector failed them. It could be the inspector inspected the home after the basement was finished. Usually I think it should have been inspected before the drywall installed. But what do I know I just watch your channel and the home owner was lucky to find you because I knew before watching this video that you would find the leak.. This is one of your best videos.. How did National Grid not find the leak? I work for a gas company and you clock the meter for 15 mins. Those leaks would have definitely made the dials move. If we can’t find the location of the leak on the fuel line we shut off the gas at the meter and the customer must call to have gas turned back on when leaks are fixed.

If I can remember they pressurized the system at the end of the day and checked it the next day if I recall.. They were lucky and no leaks.. It could have been the gas company that did the check. I do know each connections had a check mark to show each connections were checked. I was told St.Louis has some strict codes.

How did that ever pass inspection? Loose is loose. That's why you test at 100 mph not 55.

12:42 He says "unions are not allowed in pipe runs; only at the termination of fixtures"
BUT, in the video description it says "2010 Fuel Gas Code of NY 404.3 Piping in Concealed Locations which clearly states: portions of a piping system installed in concealed locations shall not have unions, "
    Which one is correct?
    1. Unions not permitted in any pipe runs, whether concealed or not concealed?
    2. Unions are permitted in pipe runs as long as they are not concealed?
This is New York code. What does the national USA code say?

I know it’s against code. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I’ve put a union in a drywall ceiling before. Leak tested it. Secured it like a mfer. I screwed the piece I cut out with only 2 screws. And wrote gas union here in big sharpie. As well as left a note on furnace, water heater.I told the customer, if you change anything that I did, it must have an easily accessible door or something. And be loudly labeled. We didn’t do the door because we were losing money before this shit show popped up. I’m sure this is technically against code. But there was no way to do it any other way with what the house looked like at the time

So was the union eliminated or tightened?

    • @marty0715yt

I believe he said he has to disassemble everything to get to that union. Plus it was not permitted per code.

Hack job but that’s why you never drywall a basement ceiling. Drop ceiling is way better. Probably a bunch of electrical junction box covered as well.
