Some of her vocal technique is based on a traditional Gaelic Celtic form called "keening", found in Ireland and Scotland. It is associated with mourning, and was used in the formal Irish funeral ritual. Very fitting in this context...
Oh wow that’s so cool! I never knew that, thank you! I am definitely gunna look that up.
This song was written after the lead, Doloris O' Riordan, saw a report of a bombing in Ireland by the IRA (Irish Republican Army, a separatist group for Irish independence) in which two young boys were killed by the bomb that was placed inside a public garbage can that they were near when it detonated...sadly, Doloris herself passed away in January of 2018, the next day she was supposed to collaborate with the band Bad Wolves on their cover of Zombie, but she was found dead in her hotel room...Bad Wolves released the song in tribute and donated all the proceeds to her family...Rest in Power Dee!
The bombing referred to here was in Warrington (in England) not in Ireland.
They were not separatist, they wanted the English out of Ireland.
Dolores' voice was magical
I was so crushed when i learned that she passed away, that was a sad day.
Gives me literal chills every time. Literal goosebumps.
The child slowly taken was on life support for a few days until his mother let him go. The other boy died at the scene. They were out buying cards for Mother’s Day.
03:23 when you said her voice is nearly cracking, it's intentional, it's part of her style which is keening. A very interesting style that she absolutely nailed every time
Ima 54 year old Man and I declare that this a Tear jerker
RIP Dolores O'Riordan. Thanks for reacting. Such a moving song & video.
The song is about the long-running conflict in Northern Ireland.
As she sings in the song, "It's the same old theme, since 1916".
In 1916, militant republicans tried to force independence from Greater Britain.
But the conflict actually goes back to the 12th century.
Two other absolutely recommendable songs are: Linger and Ode To My Family.
They were wrong in their tactics but Great Britain terrorized the Irish and Scottish for hundreds of years, stealing their resources, raping their women and murdering their men who tried any form of resistance. So try telling the whole story it didn’t start in 1916.
I don't think a lot of people realize that the conflict had been ongoing for 700 years. This song pointed a bright light at it and brought the violence to an end. Relations are still strained, but there haven't been any reports of significant violence since. Oliver Cromwell started it, Delores ended it.
Something you mentioned in this reminded me of the song "Lightning Crashes" by the band "Live". Great song, very expressive.
this!
great song!
Yes yes yes
Goes straight to your heart
RIP Delores 🙏
Such a powerful anti-war song. I remember a time when the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was bombing civilians - it was kind of scary if you wanted to visit Ireland, especially Northern Ireland, for a long time. They killed about 1800 people, 600 civilians. Another snapshot of history that isn't discussed much in the US. Worth reading up a little about it. Thanks for the reaction!
With all due respect, the history of “The Troubles” is far more complicated than a simple matter of some sort of unprovoked, unilateral, unchecked aggression carried out solely by the IRA.
Violence and terror were perpetrated against innocent people from all “sides”.
@@ImaDieHrderLkeMyKidBruceWillis The subject is WAY more complicated than can be summarized in a YT comment section. Just trying to give a starting point for future research if they want to know more.
Dude check out the bad wolf's version. It was recorded a day after she was going to sing on the track. She died the night before.
In the show “peaky blinders” they definitely showed the darker side of the Ira
There are photographs of British soldiers using Irish children as human shields during operations. It isint one sided. Shot plenty too.
Yeah, this song makes me tear up every time.
Delores's voice goes straight from her heart and soul directly to the listener
RIP beautiful Delores 🙏💜💜
%100 it does
The symbolism is that children are golden.
This song is a result of conflict in Ireland between Ireland and England, England invaded us. We are not the only country they’ve invaded. They liked doing that. we fought back in 1916… this went on many years
And Delores sings that it needs to stop. She’s not proud of the fighting. She’s saying “it’s not me, not my family”.
Another brilliant Irish protest singer is Sinèad O'Connor. Not only did she tear a photo of the pope on Saturday Night Live, but stood in front if a booing crowd and sang War. Check out The Emperor's New Clothes. No Man's Woman, Mandinka, Daddy I'm Fine.....so great.
She tore a picture of the pope…. Yea.. powerful…
Does the pope stand for Protestants or Catholics….
Baldy chooses neither…
She had mental help at one point.. yea I’ll listen to her songs not her thoughts
Sunday bloody Sunday, by U2 hits on the subject also...so sad😢
Gold is an element that doesn’t rust, corrode, or decay, so it stays pure. Those children that die due to war will stay golden!
This is an amazing song A heavy metal band, Bad Wolves, did a cover of it in 2018 Delores was supposed to sing with them but she died the day she was supposed to record her tracks. So sad Bad Wolves donated a portion of the proceeds to her children Check out Bad Wolves version The video is powerful too
I was a teen in the 80s when this topic was in the news all the time. Even with that most Americans (me included) were pretty unaware. This song really raised awareness a ton.
You can see that she's a talented musician too, playing and singing lead. You'll see when you get around to itz but she coukd really croon too. A bunch of young, female singers have copied her style in recent years, even throwing in a fake Irish accent.
RIP Dolores ❣️
Definitely check out their other songs - Linger, Dreams, Ode To My Family, When You're Gone, Animal Instinct, Promises, Just My Imagination, Free To Decide, Hollywood, Salvation, Ridiculous Thoughts, You And Me, Analyse, Never Grow Old, Time Is Ticking Out, Tomorow, Wake Me When It's Over, Icicle Melts, Daffodil Lament, there's so many I could recommend, but they've like 7 or 8 Studio Albums, plus The Lead Singer Of The Cranberries (R.I.P) Dolores O'Riordan, has 2 Solo Studio Albums called Are You Listening And No Baggage with amazing songs like You Set Me On Fire, Angel Fire, Ordinary Day, When We Were Young, Switch Off The Moment, Apple Of My Eye, Black Widow and The Journey
She is one of the most amazing singers ever
In case it hasn’t been mentioned, the armed soldiers and vehicle checkpoints in the video were real.
Yeah, as I recall they shot a bunch of this video without permits, etc.
Check out the bad wolves version she was supposed to reprise her vorcals in that one but was tragically killed the day of recording. They released the song giving the money to her family
Gold is symbolic of how precious life is
If you attend a traditional Irish funeral you will hear "the wailing and the keening", it is a traditional way of mourning. Singing is a huge part of Celtic culture.
Cranberries "LINGER" ❤❤❤
Every time i see those boys scream out, tears flow.
Check out songs "Linger", "Ode To My Family", "When You're Gone", "Dreams", "Salvation". The Cranberries are Awesome. RIP Dolores. 🙏❤
It's heart-warming to see such reactions, so many years later, and how such a masterpiece can carry a message over several generations.
At the time this song was written, I was barely a teenager and I was only just starting English at school, so I couldn't understand a word of it. I remember part of the program was exchanging "snail-mail" with foreign students from somewhere in England.
The Northern Ireland conflict had been on the news for as long as I could remember, but I honestly didn't connect the dots at the time.
Only several years later did I find out the background of the song : one of the boys that were killed in the bombing that triggered it was only 12.
When I learned this, I couldn't help thinking that he could very well have been the one I was in contact with. I never knew for sure but it doesn't really matter : this is when the song stopped being just a profound song to me, interpreted by an immense voice. This is when it finally touched me at the core, and stayed there ever since.
From your comments near the end of the track about what war does to people, an old saying "War does not decide who is right, only who is left".
Read up on the troubles in Northern Ireland from the 70's and 80's
The song and videos are about a bombing that killed children in a residential area. Please follow this cover version by Bad Woves in 2018. It gives so much meaning to Dolores life, and this song. RIP, sweet Dolores.
Agreed, the Bad Wolves cover is amazing, and such a great tribute to Dolores
Dolores! And the band! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dolores O'Riordan, RIP. Beautyfull ladie, beautyfull music, beautyfull lyrics
RIP Dolores O'Riordan.
Me Mums Mum was from Belfast Ireland, who emigrated to America before Ireland was partitioned, the song hits home.
"The troubles " is something worth looking into...
The Wikipedia articles about 'The Troubles' will give you a good background re Northern Ireland. The old saying - 'those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it'. And that holds true today.
Great respectful honest reaction Shon, thank you. RIP Dolores (lead singer)
One of my favorite songs. "Linger" is another good one by them.
Let's get some King Crimson on board, they're fantastic!
Linger ❤
It’s like the ultimate protest song. It’s heartbreaking what people do to each other
Another great song covering the brutality of war is James Blunt's "No Bravery". He was in the Kosovo War in the late 90s, serving in the British Army under NATO. He's a fantastic storyteller and his music always makes you feel, whether that's joy, sadness, or anger. Check it out!
If you wanna go clear back to the 70s Billy Dont Be a Hero is good too different vibe though more of a funny but sad when you think about it kinda thing
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥rest dear Dolores!
This song always makes me cry 😢
Me too.
On top of being the best reactor, I can tell you are a truly genuine guy, keep up the great work!!!
Lives are golden
Damn! You're up over 25K subscribers, awesome.
Hey bro, I'm Gen X. We got pissed and maybe started a change. I'm still w you, your Gen outnumbers us.... let's go!
I’m a huge cranberries fan and have seen this video and heard this song a million times. I still cry EVERY TIME I see this video.
One of the best protest songs ever written.
I'm from Northern Ireland and every time this song gets reacted to people who aren't even from the island of Ireland talk bullshit about what they don't know. The protestants and Catholics weren't at war. The ira wanted a united Ireland and the loyalist groups wanted to stay in the UK. It got out of control and innocent people were getting killed by both paramilitary groups, both of which were criminal scum. A vast majority of both catholic and protestant people lived together but as usual the media blew it all out of proportion. There were areas where either religions couldn't go into but they were few and far between. It was a very complicated situation but was not a war between protestants and Catholics.
Yes this! Terrorist murderers on both sides. War is between armies. These people bombed and murdered children, pregnant women, families, random civilians going about their daily lives.
Love your reactions Shon!!!
At 3:14 you mention how good her voice. So, i lean back, take a slow drag off a cigarette, while my brain speaks "hehehehe YOU haven't seen ANYTHING yet about her voice.
Bless you for going through this
Irish Liberation Army - fought for Irish independence from Great Britain but came to be considered a terrorists organization by Northern Ireland which stayed part of the UK while The Republic of Ireland is a sovereign nation.
Fighting continued between Catholics (majority of the Irish) and the Protestants.
Hi Shon, war is always people killing people, for whom? For the rich and greedy. Great reaction, love from Ireland, RIP Dolores (singer)
Dolores O'Riordan RIP. She was so sweet but so poerfull at the same time. Amazing.
IRA Irish Republic Army. So much terror right where they lived and death, in both Ireland and England. Religious wars are devastating to the citizens of the country. This went on for years between Catholics and Protestants. You'll find it throughout history. It's what brought about The Crusades. The song The Crusader by Chris De' Burgh always comes to mind. I imagine it's here on UA-cam.
People need to not forget what you just got understanding of. Peace my brother
Chris Cornell. Like a Stone. Specific version acoustic in Sweden. Amazing song. Also check out silverchair Frogstomp album. Kid wrote it at like 14 years old
“Creep”
Radiohead if you’ve not already.
Another powerhouse song
Powerful song ❤ rip Delores. Just found this channel. On second view of this video. Loved the reaction.
RIP Dolores. I recommend their songs Linger and Ode to My Family. Also her solo song Ordinary Day.
Great Reaction... Here are some other good ones.
1. I Wanna Know What Love Is-Foreigner
2. Sound of Silence live on Conan O Brien
3. Simple Man by Shinedown
4. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
5. Jeremy by Pearl Jam
6. Rhythm Nation Janet Jackson
7. Concrete Angel Martina McBride
8. Wanted Dead or Alive Bon Jovi
Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful! Much training went into it as well.
I think you'd appreciate Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones and All Along The Watchtower by Jimmi Hendrix!
This is an anti war song. Great band during a great time ! Dolores oriordan was awesome. RIP ! She’s missed by all of her fans
This video gets me every time.
She's genius for how she sneaks traditional Celtic keening into the song, esp at the end. Keening is a vocalization ancient Celts made during a burial or mourning.. something like that lol.
Also check out by the Cranberries: Ode To My Family, Dreams
It’s a protest song based on England and Ireland going at each other. The zombie reference is to describe to ppl blindly following orders. The kids are a representation of the guided aka zombies the next generation.
The reason for the gold painted kids........Gold = Precious
You should do a reaction to their 1999 live performance of Zombie. The crowd participation is awesome. Plus they sound phenomenal.
It's about her grandfather who'd been in WWI or II and he was a literal zombie for all purposes practical after all the combat he'd seen. Or I'm completely mistaken or was told wrong when I was a young man when this came out. Also about the fact that nothing has ever changed since then. War is even more prevalent these days. I could be wrong. The same O.D. leads me to believe I'm right because that was one of the last few times O.D. green was used as a uniform. Who knows? O.D. is Olive drab green btw.
They fighting for their freedom.
The golden mother sacrificing the golden children……..
We all know that there are two sides to every story, but can't we all agree that the killing needed/needs to stop, and this is a beautiful song?
The Cranberries was a really popular 90s band, Dolores (lead singer)voice was unique n her lyrics were emotive. Other popular n great songs by them are 'Linger', 'Dreams' n 'Ode to my family '. I enjoy watching your reactions, discovering music/songs that I loved for years is a joy. Keep enjoying music n expanding your horizons
So glad that you did react to The Cranberries like I suggested in your Evanescence - Bring me to Life video. They have a lot of great songs worth reacting to.
Another all time favorite of mine since childhood!!
Queen ...another one bites the dust

Someone mentioned Band Maid. They're a great current rock Band. I suggest these songs: Thrill, Dice, Manners & Bubble
You should also check the out Bad Wolves cover of this song. Dolores was killed on her way to do the recording with them. They almost didn't release it because of her death, but Tommy Vex decided to anyway & the proceeds went to her family
I really enjoy you're reactions...You always come up with something new and a different twist.
This is a song about Domestic Terrorism which will use any weapon.
Now check out Bad Wolves' tribute of this song in which Dolores was planning on being.
Such a horrible sad and painful time for Northern Ireland and for the Republic also. Horrible acts carried out on both sides. Thank God for the Good Friday Agreement and lets walk to the future with peace in our hearts 💚🤍🧡
Welcome to Ireland
BTW, the band was offered a lot of money NOT to release the song and got a lot of flack for choosing to ignore that and release it anyway. The whole thing was a nightmare.
Cant help but cry...seeing those babies...dead :( :( :( you have a great heart and I love you for that.. ty for sharing and I watch every video lil cutie :)
The Troubles were an ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years from the late 1960s to 1998.The IRA is The Irish Republic Army(I believe). The Irish War of Independence or Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war fought in Ireland from 1919 to 1921 between the Irish Republican Army (IRA, the army of the Irish Republic) and British forces: the British Army, along with the quasi-military Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and its paramilitary forces the Auxiliaries and Ulster Special Constabulary (USC). It was part of the Irish revolutionary period.

Topics like this, this was happening in her part of Ireland. Protestant ireland ruled by England
She was from the Republic of Ireland and was Catholic, not from NI and Protestant. She was singing that the actions of the IRA in Warrington and elsewhere were not in her name and distancing herself from the troubles (on both sides).
This song is about the times called the troubles in Northern Ireland, when the Irish Republic Army (IRA) were waging armed resistance against British control, and want it united with Ireland as a full island country!
She’s singing against the fighting. She’s saying she’s not in support of the violence (neither IRA or unionist).
