    I always like how we get to see the real Simon in this episode. Simon was born into an elite family within the Alliance. He is a genius and a doctor in a world where such a position puts him at the top of a very structured hierarchy.
    But since the beginning Simon has been a fish out of water. He's a fugitive and he's trying to keep River unnoticed and safe. He's surrounded by thieves and criminals and people that are not even allowed to walk around safely inside the Alliance. So, Simon has been awkward and timid on Serenity. But in the hospital Simon is back in a place where he knows how to behave. And as a doctor he is used to giving orders and seeing people jump. That's why, I think, Joss Whedon showed us the older doctor ordering Mal and Zoe around.
    And when Simon is dealing with the Federal cop you see Simon's strength and resolve. This guy may be a cop and Simon may be in his custody but Simon's not going to let the cop think that makes him Simon's superior. Simon is important. The people that want Simon and River are important. And a cop is way down on the hierarchy. Notice Simon's jab? "Important people don't do field work."
    Sean Maher is a good actor and it was nice to see him be able to flex a bit in this episode.

      @@ryanakers1372 Yes. Simon had trained from the time he was a small boy to be a doctor. He's likely the guy who worked 80 hours a week at it. His mind needs to be constantly occupied with solving problems.
      But most of the time Simon is sitting round, unable to do anything to fix River and just waiting for one of the others to get SHOT.
      That's a lot of frustration. And frustration is a great motivator. Simon would had to have adapted. And that creates a lot of opportunities for plot and character growth.
      I know they had planned for Inara to have some critical illness as a motivation for her being on Serenity. And I suspect Simon would have been pivotal in resolving that.
      So, yes. We missed a lot of Simon's character with the shortened series.

    Remember in episode 1, at the end, Mal asked Jayne "how come you didn't turn on me?" Jayne replied "money wasn't good enough."
    This is that "interesting day", when the money was too good for Jayne not to go for it. And his decision was probably helped along by getting slashed in the chest by a butcher's knife wielded by River Tam...

    It’s always looked to me that when Jayne sees and hears Simon explain the horrifying things that were done to River, he starts to waver in his plan, at least until the authorities arrive and he thinks he’ll get his reward. When everything goes sideways, and Jayne fights to get free, he doesn’t leave River and Simon to fend for themselves.

      Some tend to think that when Jayne tells them there is a change of plan, he is leading them to the feds. I'm pretty sure he'd had the change of heart at that point and the "Change of plan, we have to go now" was that the feds were supposed to meet him in that room, and he was attempting to get them out of there Before the feds arrived. Then the feds caught up to them anyway.

      It's not just that. Jayne feels betrayed by Mal. Jayne is just as much a part of the crew as Simon and River, possibly more since he has seniority, and Mal has consistently made it clear that Simon's and River's continued presence on the crew is dependent on Simon's ability to keep River from doing anything crazy. But when Jayne gets sliced up for the crime of wearing a shirt to breakfast and appeals to the captain for protection, Mal brushes him off. Of course Jayne is going to stop feeling any loyalty to Mal and start looking out for himself and trying to find a convenient way to get the crazy knife lady out of his life at that point, and I don't blame him in the slightest.

    Once you understand why Jayne is so focused on making money, and why he is motivated to not let anthing get in the way of making that money, you understand Jaynes actions a lot more. River slashed him across the chest with a knife at the beginning of the episode, and Mal didnt have the conversation with Simon about River in front of Jayne, so from Jayne's perspective Mal told him the Tams were staying no matter what, and beyond her being crazy, River turned out to be dangerous. And the Tams were also a liability in that they were fugitives that could have and already had brought down Alliance heat on them. Jayne sees them as a net liability, so in his not brilliant mind turning them in would have gotten rid of a liability while making a pile of credits (if it worked out). Of course it didnt work out, but he may have even thought he was doing Mal a favor by getting rid of the Tams.
    As a side note, Jane was wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt, which is the megacorporation that was responsible for the school she went to and the experiments and that she was a subjected to. Also when River tore the labels off the canned food in a previous episode, all the labels she tore off were Blue Sun products.
    There was a lot of lore and world building, and character secrets and backstory that we never got to discover because this show's run was cut way too short.

    • @BKPrice
      @BKPrice 5 місяців тому +2

      Not to mention that Simon coming on board the Serenity without disclosing his status as a fugitive was a dick move. It put the crew in danger and nearly killed Kaylee, so there is good reason for anyone on that ship to despise him. We tend to overlook it because we're sympathetic with his reasons, but he put them in danger without their consent. Jayne is reasonably upset with them, and wanting them off the ship is also a reasonable desire for him.

    The Train Job really sets up the question of what exactly is Jayne's position within the hierarchy of the crew. And while it's clear the crew all work for Mal as the captain of the ship. Jayne believes he works for Mal the criminal. And thus as separate entity, different from the others. So this episode is kinda needed as a reality check for Jayne. To force him to revaluate his relationships with the crew. And his place in the family that's grown around this crew. And ultimately for him to grow as a character.

  • @robertanderson6929
    @robertanderson6929 5 місяців тому +4

    Not to defend Jayne but lets look at things though Jayne's eyes. First, from the beginning, Jayne has never considered River and Simon part of the crew. Jayne tells Simon, "Just because Mal says you are a Medic doesn't make you part of the crew, understand?"
    While he might have some loyalty to Mal, Kaylee, Zoe and Walsh the Shepard, Inara and the Tam's are just passengers. They are not part of the "criminal" crew that he is part of.
    Second, from the first episode, Jayne has figured that Mal would eventually turn River and Simon in for either a hefty reward or to get themselves out of a jam with the Alliance. He says as much to Kaylee in _The Train Job._
    Now, River has become a threat. As he tells Mal, she's a threat to everyone including Inara and Kaylee.
    So, when you add that all up, from Jayne's perspective, the right thing to do, _for the crew,_ is to rid themselves of Simon and River. Ariel is as fine a place as any to leave them. And if Jayne can hand them over to the Alliance and profit in the process all the better. After all, as far as Jayne is concerned they are going to get caught sooner or later. Why not profit from that rather than not?
    And Jayne likely figures that Mal is just being a bit soft-hearted by keeping them around and risking HIS as well as everyone else's safety. So, if Jayne comes back with a boat load of credit and there is no way to get River and Simon back maybe Mal and Zoe take their cut and figure Jayne did them a favor. Or maybe Jayne planned to take all the credits and take off on his own.
    Either way, it's not hard to understand why Jayne would think getting rid of Simon and River and profiting in the process is the best thing for everyone, including Mal and Zoe. I'm not saying it is right. I'm saying that from Jayne's perspective he could rationalize his actions very easily.

    • @Daniel_Rood
      @Daniel_Rood 5 місяців тому +2

      This is very well said. Jayne is certainly a brute and his moral compass is a lot more flexible than the rest of the crew, but I think a lot of fans can regard his character just a bit unfairly. It's nice to see that someone else has the same or similar thoughts regarding Jayne as I do.

    • @robertanderson6929
      @robertanderson6929 5 місяців тому +2

      @@Daniel_Rood Thanks. The shortened season left us with few opportunities to see the type of criminals Mal and Zoe are. But they are every bit the killers that Jayne is. Mal kicked Niska's man Crow though the engine. And they've killed plenty of others along the way.
      So, it's easy for Jayne to see ridding themselves of Simon and River as something of which Mal would approve. He just cannot understand why Mal would have any loyalty to Simon or River.
      But loyalty is where Mal and Jayne differ. Jayne can trade his loyalty for a few more credits. That's how he came to be with Zoe and Mal to begin with.
      Mal is different. Once you are part of his team, his unit, his crew then he's going to look after you. He's going to try to get you though it alive. Just like he did with Zoe during the war.

  • @eschiedler
    @eschiedler 5 місяців тому +22

    My opinion, my 2 cents only, is that without Jayne on the Serenity, the crew would all be too "nice" and the lack of conflict could limit the storytelling. In addition, it would make Mal seem too bitter and mean. Unfortunately, how far Jayne's antagonism could've been pushed will never be known.

    The "Medical Shuttle" prop was actually a 5/8ths scale model of a Russian Hind D helicopter gunship that had been made for forced perspective shots in a war movie. The Firefly crew got it very, very cheap and then dressed it up on nearly no budget. The engines were literally dustbins screwed to the sides and Wash had to sit in the back cockpit because the front one was too small (they covered it over with opaque panels). The "patient pods" were car roof-top carriers. A few years ago, a group of Browncoats actually found the prop and managed to buy it, with the intention of restoring it and taking it on the convention circuit. As far as I know though, that never happened, which I'm rather glad about to be honest. It was really janky up-close (at lot of movie props are) and I can't help feeling it wouldn't have been the best advert for the show.

    Jayne is stupid, but he's not the amoral monster people see when they first watch this. Mal's line: "You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me! But since that's a concept you can't seem to wrap your head around then you got no place here!" - why doesn't it apply to River? Jayne was trying to protect his crew when the Captain was (apparently) doing nothing about a potential murderer in their midst. That's why the money was never good enough before: he cares about his people (witness him secretly checking on Kaylee in the pilot episode), which doesn't include Simon & River; and his primary motivation here is to get rid of the danger. The money is why he chooses such a stupid method, though, and since he doesn't see himself as the caring type even he thinks its the reason he did it.

    Hi Kazzy, glad you enjoyed it, great reaction, It's always cool to have a heist for an episode, but of course Josh Whedon wouldn't be who he is if he didn't add a few layers to that classic story line. The reasons why Jayne did what he did I do believe it was linked to his keen sense of self-preservation, triggered by River's attack. He wasn't exactly happy with their presence on the ship as it was, but that pulled him over the line, even though out loud to Mal he said it was the money and I guess that was an imporant factor too, killing two birds with one stone kind of deal.
    I love Jayne's final question "Can I come in now?" like a child that was scolded by his father.
    On a different note, still a bit of a mystery to me how the crew was able to create such a shiny (pun intended) medic ship. Cobbled together from a scrap yard, all of it? They allow you to plunder the scrap yard without paying for it and wouldn't they ask for ID especially suspicious when someone picks out all the parts of a complete craft? Where did they get the money from? Kaylee put it together on her own?
    Ha ha, who cares, right?

    The blue light stick must have an effect (suspends or destroys) on the bodies clotting system. The clotting mechanism (platelets, endothelial cells, etc.) (not to be confused with scabs) basically is what keeps us from bleeding to death all the time. Without it we would bleed from every mucus membrane and other tissues, ie, intestines, sinuses. Also, eyes, finger nails, and pores if it's bad enough.

    I’ve watched a lot of reactors go through this series. Ep1: a lot of confusion. Before long, they love the characters in varying amounts. Then the realization of how truly short the series is, and a bittersweet watching of Serenity. It hurts. Every time. And it can do that to me as many times as it likes.

    I find it interesting how quick everyone is to forgive River and condemn Jayne.

      My guess is that it's because River is clearly mentally unwell - she doesn't have control over her mind or her emotions, and so we sympathize with her sudden moments of violence or troublemaking. Jayne, on the other hand, is a man with a relatively "healthy" and functional brain, who's in pretty good control over his own actions - so we hold him more responsible when he acts in a way that could harm the other characters.

      Actually, it's not. River is very obviously mentally ill as a result of what they did to her at the acadamy.

    River: They took Christmas away. Came downstairs for the shiny presents. They took the tree and the stockings. Nothing left but coal.
    I think River might be predicting the future here. The presents are River, Simon, and Jayne (but mostly River), the ones who "came downstairs" are the Hands Of Blue. The "they" that "took Christmas away" was Mal and Zoe rescuing them.
    River: ( _smiling_ ) Don't look in the closet, either. It's greedy. It's not in the spirit of the holiday.
    If the three prisoners are the presents, then maybe the cops are the ones who looked in the closet by talking to the prisoners. River's smiling because she knows this is naughty and will get them punished.

      I think it's more just River directly reading Jayne in that moment and choosing a very indirect way to communicate it - but close enough that Jayne understands exactly what she is getting at and wants her to shut up before she says enough for Simon to catch on.
      Christmas was the reward money Jayne was expecting to get, but the Feds double-crossed him to claim his money for themselves, leaving Jayne with nothing but coal. The closet is Jayne himself and his intentions.

    That doctor that Zoe zapped is DEAD. That electric shock knocks the heart out of whatever rythym it's in. If it's a bad rythym, it can then be restarted. In that Doctor's case, his heart was doing its normal thing. Zoe stopped it. Zoe killed him...

    Jayne did tell Mal right during the pilot episode, that the reason he didn't turn on Mal then was the money wasn't good enough. Jayne has always been in it for himself, and this time, the money was good enough to turn on Mal.

    "Ariel": Simon reveals his hidden crime boss side, a raid for meds at a major hospital, the crew trades for medical uniforms and IDs, along with a decrepit ambulance. Time for acting class, as the crew struggles with medical terminology, Simon and River are "dead." Jayne tries to make a deal, Simon displays his Boss Doctor chops when an incompetent resident nearly kills a patient. Mal and Zoe "persuade" a doctor to grant them access to the Pharmacy. Jayne's deal goes South, so he breaks loose, and the "Hands of Blue" arrive with homicidal intent. The caper is successful, and Jayne is almost spaced. Could "postmodern writers" and The Message pushers redo "Firefly"? Let's hope NOT!

      Why the hell are you recapping to something we all just watch?? I think we are smart enough to figure out what is happening without your bullsh*t remarks. I've noticed you've done this on other reactors' channels. So just stop and get a life preferably your own.
