I think one reason Mal is crankier at the start of Serenity is because both Book and Inara are off the ship. They were the two people on the ship who were not in his direct chain of command, and both were people he could talk things out with, both were trained counselors in different traditions.
With only people under his command left on the ship, he couldn't really open up to them about some things, he had to keep those things bottled up...

I was one of the odd viewers who walked into a theatre in 2005 to watch "Serenity" with no effing idea what it was; I just thought the one trailer I saw looked very interesting and I had a free day and it happened to be playing. I got really sucked into it and ended up wanting more, so I did what I thought was the next step and bought the novelization. The novel opens on the prologue of the episode "Serenity" showing Mal and Zoe in the war. The novel had so much extra information in it that I was endlessly fascinated by that led me to realizing that the series "Firefly" existed, and I finally got the chance to sit down and watch it from start to finish a while later.
"Serenity" is a miracle of a movie -- it getting made at all will always be a testament to the power of a truly committed fandom. If the Browncoats hadn't amassed the way they did for as long as they did, convincing Universal that there would be a built-in audience to sell tickets to this movie, it would never have been made at all. While it wasn't a box office success, it did make back its budget and earned the studio a small profit, though it did very well in DVD sales, enough to justify a super deluxe box set I recommend. It won a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and a Prometheus Special Award, and a very committed fan who happened to be an astronaut brought his DVD sets of "Firefly" and "Serenity" to reside in the International Space Station to be available for entertainment for all the astronauts of varying nationalities who get to go up and work there.
I'm glad that you liked it. There are some fans who aren't as big on it because it is a lot "bigger" and more spectacle-heavy to be more of a movie than a TV show; it does have a different feel and loses some of the intimacy and familial vibes that made the show so special in favor of telling a larger story. While I do think some things were invented specifically for the movie, I do actually think that River's discovery of the advent of the Reavers was always going to be addressed in later seasons of the show to explain quite why the Alliance was *that* desperate to either get her back or kill her, and why the Blue Hands were so insistent on killing any of the Alliance personnel they came across who had actually spoken with her: she always clearly knew some secret they were very, very hellbent on her not sharing with anyone. Also, as I'm sure someone else already beat me to saying, Ron Glass tragically was already going through his cancer battle by the time "Serenity" was greenlit to begin filming and was only available for limited shooting time. Signs of his being physically unwell can be seen in the movie, and he sadly passed away shortly after the film's release. He always loved his character of Shepherd Book and he wanted to be involved in the project.
I was one of the viewers who agreed with Wash's death -- not that I was happy about it, you understand, but I got that it was done for stakes. In a battle as massive as the final fight in "Serenity", it would have been a bit too 'happy ever after' for Whedon's brand of storytelling if everyone had made it through. Book and Wash dying alongside Zoe, Simon, Mal, and Kaylee all getting pretty badly injured was honestly not the worst outcome. I still tear up a bit when I see it, though. Wash was a wonderful character.

The original plan was for all of the regular cast members to survive. There was just one little problem with that plan. Joss Whedon had negotiated a deal that, if _Serenity_ resulted in enough new fans being created, there would be more movies. So the main cast were asked to sign contracts that said they would be available for as many as three movies. Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk had previous commitments that kept them from being able to sign for more than one movie. So, in preparation for those two potential movies, it was necessary to provide a plot reason that would explain their absence. The easiest way to do that was to kill off the Shepherd and Wash.
Whedon made the best use possible of their deaths - they propelled the plot forward, added tension, and removed the belief that the crew of Serenity had plot immunity and couldn't be killed off - but he only did it because his hand had been forced.
And then the existing fan base was offered advance access to tickets for _Serenity,_ and, predictably, bought up most of them, so the movie DIDN'T result in a major increase in the fan base and the extra movies were never made. So we lost Wash and the Shepherd for nothing.

There's an anecdote that has long floated around Firefly fandom that one woman at a Serenity showing began to weep very audibly after Shepherd's death, and only got more agitated as the movie continued, until the shock of Wash's death sent her spiraling so hard that she had to be carried/escorted out of the theater. Many Browncoats I've spoken to love this movie for existing, and are proud that their persistent campaign to save the show helped make it happen...and hate it for being well and truly the end of their favorite universe.

Whedon succeeded if you thought this was going to be another Rogue One. With the death of Shepard and then Wash, Whedon wanted the audience to think this was going to have a "The Wild Bunch" ending. The movie basically was to wrap up River's arc. Whedon had intended for THIS story to be the season 1 or perhaps season 2 finally. Remember at the time 23-26 episodes was the norm for a season and we only got 13. Further seasons would have had other arcs.
Shepard Book's arc is told in the graphic novel A Shepard's Tale. I won't spoil it.
Inara's arc was to answer the question, why is she on the ship? Whedon had planned her to have a terminal illness. And it was speculated that to save her Mal would challenge the Alliance again, perhaps another hospital heist to get the things necessary for Simon to save Inara's life. Unfortunately, we'll never know.
Jayne and Zoe would have had their stories told as well. So, there was easily 5+ seasons of stories to tell.

Also, the Operative was a truly tragic character. He truly believed in working towards making things better for everyone, so much that he was willing to sacrifice his soul doing any dirty work that may be necessary to achieve it, as is often needed.
It's not his fault he was used and betrayed by the people he believed in.
Like he said, he's a monster, but at least he wanted to be a monster for the right reasons, and that was stolen from him.

Trivia: The scene at the end with a close-up of a screaming reaver that River punches is played by Neil Patrick Harris.
If you're wondering about the deaths of Wash and Book it's because the actors couldn't commit to future movies.
According to The Firefly and Serenity Database under Jubal Early, the bounty hunter was to be the main antagonist in the movie but the actor was unavailable.
The actors are willing to comeback to do more at least some, may Ron Glass rest in peace, but with Disney currently in control and having problems we'll have to wait and see.

Part of the reason this was more serious than the show, is the show was supposed to be a "slow burn" where making some of the themes the series laid down the threads of stories were meant to last at least a season, or longer. This movie was... not. It was trying to wrap everything up and be done in one movie.

Thank you Kazzy for being willing to share your story with your UA-cam friends, as well as Patreon. I think I speak for all of us in saying we wish you a full recovery and success in your film endeavors.
A lot of people remark on the darker dynamic in the movie vs. the show - especially among the crew. Here's my take: Joss Wedon had a five season arc sketched out for Firefly. We only got part of one season. Season One introduces the characters and lays out the baseline, the golden age if you will. In later seasons I believe Wedon would have mixed things up, introduced more conflict etc... to challenge and test the characters. We already knew that Inara would be leaving the ship. I suspect we would have gotten a _Serenity_ that was a much less happy place than we had in Season One - much like what we see in the movie, which takes place several months after we last saw our crew. I don't know where _Firefly_ was going to go in Season 2-5, but I suspect some of it would have been rather rough sledding, causing us to look back on Season One as the halcyon days.
One 'benefit' of only getting one season is what we never really had to see our happy Firefly family torn up, as I suspect it would have if the show had gotten its full run.

"Serenity" takes place after "Firefly," but it also tries to recap the series for newbies. I think Whedon does an impressive job of it -- not "altering" the characters, exactly, but summing up their relationships over the previous several episodes of the series (Mal and Dr. Tamm have been sparring since the beginning, with Mal taking at least *two* cheap shots, decking the doctor for no reason; "Serenity" just gives Simon a chance to *finally* punch back).

The one issue with this movie is that the TV show was only 1 season. Things weren't allowed to develop as they should have to make everything make as much sense as it should have. They did a phenomenal job with this given that limitation. One example is River and her abilities.
There are Firefly books that go into more detail about things. One story called "Generations" they find a man trapped in an Alliance secret prison, but they don't know that it is, and let him out. He's like River in that they did the same things to him they did to River only he fully embraced his abilities and was so terrifying it made River become afraid of giving in to her combat/assassin side in fear she'll become like him, which is why she's constantly fighting with herself. It isn't until Simon get's shot that's willingly able to use her skills out of love for her brother instead of in fear for herself. If they could have had a season 2 and had an episode about all that why River does little to nothing would have made a lot more sense.

Imagine an entire planets worth of resources left in the hands of a large towns worth of literal madmen. That's how the Reavers just appeared one day and started eating people, with ships and guns, and why they are so powerful by this point in the story. I mentioned once previously about how rewarding it is as a longtime fan of the show, to see how much you embraced it and the characters (including the ship). The roller coaster of your emotions (even in just the first few minutes, but especially at the deaths of Book and Wash, really shows the depth at which Firefly and Serenity have gotten into you.
Yeah, it would have been great if it had kept going, but (as you know), stuff happened. I don’t think it could be resurrected, not with the same quality it would deserve. As it is, we all have a practically perfect half season and feature film, and it shouldn’t be diminished with a less-than-perfect continuation.

In actuality, Ron Glass (Book) was in serious pain with a back injury and Alan Tudyk (Wash) had other obligations and couldn't commit in case Whedon could bring the series back as he hoped the movie might make possible. First, and most importantly, I am glad that you are able to make these videos and that you are feeling able to! It is as much a gift to us as it is a job for you. Second, I am looking forward to seeing what you have to offer... a sequel to Serenity? I know there are comic books out there related to Firefly/Serenity! Lots of material to draw from! Also, I could have watched an algorithm full of other videos. I choose to watch yours though because you're genuine with your reactions and it is a lot of fun for me! That makes you and your work special to me in your own way as well! Thank you!

Enjoyed watching with you. Sorry about your health problems. I'm 73 retired artist. Just had a stroke, no physical problems but blurred my vision. Can't really draw any longer, can drive. But my life is good. About 18 years ago my wife and I separated, but stayed best friend. Meet my new girlfriend when I was 55 and she was 21. Been together 18 years, and just go married last Friday. Have failed in business do to 911. But happier now then when I was 21. The future can always be brighter, you just need to look for it. Bright Blessings and be well.

I worked on two episodes of Firefly, but I never watched the show. When the movie came out, I saw it first. (I remember thinking, "They killed the pilot guy? He was funny!") Afterward, I watched the show and got the full context. Glad you enjoyed it.

The lore is that, financially, things have gotten a lot more desperate. The pressure is on and Mal is on the edge of being broke.
