Thank you for the video. I did mine today. I found the tensioner pulley to need an H8 allen, instead of a 10.
You're correct about the bit being a H8, thanks, I made a mistake on the size I mentioned in the video.
my 2016 wrx just started squeeking and the belt began to fray. Thank you for a step by step to follow!
You're quite welcome Connor.
I need to do this exact job on my '13 outback. You've probably saved me hundreds in labor costs. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome Levi, that's the whole idea behind my channel, thank you for leaving a positive comment, and happy repairs...
Great video - easy instructions and very clear camera work. Thanks
Much thanks, I appreciate the compliments on the video..
UA-cam is nice enough to pop up a link to a separate video right over the part numbers for the idler pulley. Nice.
I have parts linked in the description box of this video also.
Thanks for posting this, very helpful and well organized for us at home!
Thanks for the compliments on my video Travis, I hate to search on UA-cam only to find videos that skips out half the info, so I try to include as much as I can in what I post..
I appreciate the information as much as the measured delivery well done, sir.
@ebenezer1690, you're welcome sir, much thanks for compliments..
I thought the grinding/whirring sound I was hearing was my transmission going out, which I'm sure a shop would've "confirmed" as the problem if I had mentioned it. No. It was the two idler pulleys you showed how to replace. And the sound is now gone. Saved me hundreds if not thousands or a new car. Many thanks to you.🙏
Always happy to hear when my videos are helpful to someone, much thanks to you Raul for taking the time to let me know, I truly appreciate that.
Excellent video
@dreze888, much thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate it, I will have a video of the valve cover gasket replacement coming soon..
I am about to do this for my Subaru, same year, same color, thanks!
Got to keep them going the best we can Richard..
Me too
Thank you! Pretty sure I've used your videos before for other repairs, so about time I commented lol.
You're video is saving this newbie hundreds for a simple fix. I'd rather prefer to learn how to do any and all repairs within reason whenever possible, so it's greatly appreciated. 🫶🏻
You're quite welcome , I truly appreciate you taking the time to drop a few lines, and yes that is the exact idea behind my channel, these shops get us every way they can..
Thanks for creating this video, your demo made the job a piece of cake when it was my turn.
One minor detail--I was wondering why my 10mm hex wasn't working to get the tensioner bolt out, so I ended up pulling it with a T50. Once I had it out I discovered that a T50 corresponds to an 8mm hex. So close to justifying a new socket or 5, but alas I already had both a T50 and 8mm on hand. Maybe next time.
no worries Nick, thanks for the correction..
Is one of the pulleys on the water pump?
Dealer wanted 500 dollars just to do the 2 idlers, not even the tensioner or replace the belt... What times we're living in
Thank God for UA-cam University, a little willingness can save you some serious bucks...
Do you have to add any lubricant to the center of the idler pulley? Like on the area where the pulley itself sits on the metal?
there's something called anti-seize liquid, that's good to use for that purpose.
Just wonder why or when you also need to change the tensioner and idler pulley. Thx
@hn ng, when the bearings in the pulley's become worn and dry it will make a high pitched shelly sound while the engine is running, I usually change all pulleys including tensioner once that happens, reason being, once one goes the others are close behind..
Do you need 2 idler pulley of the same part no right?
@John Gonzalez, yes you need two of the same part number..
W What is a fun belt number of that model
hi, all parts are linked in the description box below the video, you just have to click on it.
THE most important part of putting the belt back on [where is that?]
everything else is the easy part
@Bellly Acres, at the 8:58 min mark I show the belt diagram, you can pause to view it, and do the reverse of the removal to install....

this guy shows how he does it
your vid was good too, just having the belt install in real time is helpful
@@bellyacres7846 cool..
What are the torque specs?
hey John, I've been fixing my own cars since a teenager, so for certain repairs I am able do by feel, cylinder heads, valve cover and a few other things I will use a torque wrench, this video is to show how I went about doing this repair, but you're welcome to research that info and use a torque wrench per your satisfaction, and you're welcome to post that info here also once you've found it, in the event anyone else may maybe seeking it..
Per the Subaru manual 26.6 ft-lbs (36Nm) for the idler and 18.4 ft-lbs (25Nm) for the tensioner.
Is one of the pulleys on the water pump?
No, the water pump on this car is driven by the timing belt, there are three pulleys in all, two idlers and the tensioner.
