- Here's a demo of the app firmware update for pioneer units. And I have to say I'm a little disappointed...at this time. Hopefully they'll improve the preinstalled apps by giving them more functions. And one feature I forgot to show is that the unit can mirror your device like Apple TV with this cable.

Great review, Love the price for the features, great to see nav systems, expandability, slowly turning into smart devices.
@Mark Hampshire I've upgraded my radio to the 8500 since this video and it actually plays all format videos. But your radio will play any format as long as it's coming from the iPod. Any other memory card or flash will only work with divx format. And the biggest format possible is 16:9. If you want full screen you have to adjust the radio viewing to ZOOM. You should have 3 options...NORMAL, FULL, and ZOOM.
@Felipe Ramirez Yup...that's exactly what it's for. The installer uses a switch to mimic the parking brake being applied so the video function of the radio will play while the vehicle is in motion. But you don't need this done if your just showing the video on a rear monitor.
@thermbug Not sure I fully understand your question. Yes I bought the Pioneer CD-IV202AV cable and the Apple VGA cables separately. This radio doesn't come with and optional cables.
@Jimmy Paul Yes those cables have to be installed in the back of the unit. All the plugs are in the back of this model.
@Gledson Teodoro I honesty can't remember. I do remember that the instructions told you to hold down the wrong button to initiate the update. But you must have the Pioneer CD-IV202AV and lightning cables. And it helps to use 2 USIB drives because the update is in two parts and they can't be on the drive at the same time. But I've since update the radio to the 8500 and it doesn't seem to need these updates to work.
@ MrR20south Yes it plays videos. You can under the MEDIA app.
The updates are on Pioneer's website. Just select your unit and the options are on the left side of the screen.
Hi, I have the Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS installed in my 1998 Nissan Altima. The issue I'm having is that the first week I had the chance to dial a specific number, today, the dialer's keypad is grayed-out, and I cannot dial the number, I have to go and look for the contact manually... I already did a reset, several times actually and nothing works. Do I need a firmware update?
@prk002 Really not understanding your question. The update is not mandatory and has nothing to do with thumb drives or USB cables. It's only for using the Pioneer apps with your iOS device.
@Steven Harvey It should work. In this video I'm using my iPod Touch 5 with my Clear hotspot.
@gregroth21 Pandora works fine on the 5. Not sure what you meant about the Bluetooth. Bluetooth works fine plugged or not. I believe Bluetooth has to be on to use appradio. I've upgraded to the 8500 and waiting on the new firmware.
@bladerunner678 Nope! That text stays there while in Radio mode...no adjustments for it.
Thank you so much. A last question: if I install a back up camera and im listening to pandora or something else, does the screen changes by itself when I change from D to R ? do I feed the camera from the reversing lights or the head unit has a power source to power the camera? Thank you so much for your time.
@cannonp10 Of course it's running off the phones signal. It's an app not the navigation system. And I've drove from Pennsylvania to Minnesota without losing my signal.
Great review! I have thoughts about getting this. Planning to use this with an iphone5 and i see an ebrake needs to be put up when using apps? Does that apply to the navigation app as well?
You do not remove the radio to update it. But you do need a flash drive or two. Two would be easier or take your laptop out to the car. But the update is broken into 2 files that must be installed separately. And can not be on the same flash drive at the same time.
Thanks for all the info on the 3500. Will I still be able to use the usb cable if I need to do a firmware update or to use a thumb drive?
@Phorenn I never tried podcasts so I don't know.
Hi.
I am in England and have just got the DAB version of this unit. Can you help me with the video setup from an ipod on this. I convert to mp4 etc and the video plays fine, however it does not fill the whole screen. Do you by any chance know the settings to set it at so the video plays full screen
Thanks for the info. Do the Pioneer CD-IV202AV & Apple VGA cables need to be installed or are they cables you can simply plug into the USB port?
@ Mark Hampshire And as far as the Navi...you need a 3G or 4G signal. I was using my personal hotspot in this video.
Also, how did you the the sat nav working as i can get the app on screen but it does nothing when i press it.
The search option in the Maps app will only appear when the handbrake is engaged.
Great video....Thank you !
You're welcome
@Scott Berger Read the comment under your question.
ateased1 Where did you get the firmware for the iphone 5 capability? Do I download this onto my iphone? Thanks so much
I see that this is ten years ago but anyone have this receiver still in 2024 because I seem to not get the apps or dvdv or nav to work. And it did update to think was 18.2 if remember correctly so what could I be doing wrong
Did you try listening to podcasts? Did it have the 15 second jump forward/back buttons? I use those very frequently, so if they aren't there, that might be a deal breaker.
Can u tell me please what is the bypass for? Is to access video while driving? Thank you so much.
Did you buy the CDIV202AV, and vga > lightning adapter etc?
Hi, good video so i have a question... how to change the screen for Day and Night mode all day mi screen is not visible ( Sorry for my Inglish ) thnks for you comments.
Can the source text in the upper left be adjusted or hidden? I really want this head unit but I'm super picky about that and wish it would go away.
I don't know about the ebrake...mine is bypassed.
Have a question I have a avh x2500bt and I wanted to know if I use my gs3 as a hotspot for my ipod touch 4th generation can I use my app mode
just purchased this unit... looks like a solid unit... . dude accent is so thick... so northern...
It was a good unit...but I upgraded to the 8500 since then. And it's sick!
Now is this running of signal off cellphone for the maps looks like it thing is every location dosent have a signal
I've upgraded to the AVH-X8500BHS before iOS 7 came out but I'm pretty sure it'll work...as long as pioneer updated the software apps. Now I can't say for certain because for some reason this firmware update still hasn't been released for the AVH-X8500bhs! But regardless you can still play music and make/receive phone calls over Bluetooth without the new firmware.
I just bought the AVH-X3500BHS. Thanks for your videos. What do you think about the 8500BHS? Is there a big difference from the 3500BHS? I recently upgraded from the 1500DVD
Just did a little vid on the 8500. Yes I like it better...mainly for the detachable face! And the screen is a little wider due to its all touch screen. Check it out.
How do you update the pioneer Firmware
you cant navigate with the maps app because you are using an ipod touch. an ipod touch does not have a GPS antenna. if you use an iphone (has GPS built in) then you can navigate with the pioneer headunit.
Did you download and install the new firmware for the radio from Pioneer's website?
How do you install the firmware onto the radio? Do I need to pull out the radio?
is there an update for avhx1550 ?
Sorry didn't see you upgraded to the 8500 series.
Firmware has nothing to do with the phone ability. I'm not sure if that unit has built in Bluetooth. I don't have it anymore...I upgraded to the 8500. I just uploaded a short video about it.
Can you play videos from your apple devices, you never showed that part
Hey man, thanks for the review. I was wondering if this worked with iOS7?
Sorry I'm 6 months late! Lol! But I have the 8500 now.
I understand that you have to get the firmware to get the icon to appear, but how do you get the firmware ?
That's right. Get the firmware directly from pioneer's website. Put your model in the search field. Follow the instructions carefully...it's not that simple. You have to download 2 files but they can't be on the same drive at once! I just used 2 separate drives.
Have you tested the iOS 7 yet? I'm seriously considering buying this head unit very soon. But my main concern is mirroring my iPhone same as when I plug it into my Tv via hdmi. I don't care about control just mirroring my iPhones screen and apps.
I've upgraded to the 8500 since then.
That's all I wanted to make sure u buy all the right cables before u install I still haven't done it yet oh and it's optimised for ifone 5 not 4 so make sure u have that too
Hey! Have you tried it with ios7 ??
Check pioneer's website. I've updated my radio to the 8500 since this radio.
hey bro how did you updated the firmware?
how did you hook up your iPod. i hooked up my iPhone 5 with the cord that comes with the phone put the apps icon doesn't light up on the screen
You also need the hdmi connection.
I have the same problem got told to buy a dif lead that's all the charger cable not made to send vid or pic also got told this still might not work ? Not impressed really all I wanted was a sat nav really would have been nice to have a utube app that works aswell it works well though wiv iPod and iPad just not wiv ifone4s
Good video..
Thanks bro!
So I have iPhone 6 Plus. I want to be able to use my iPhone in my truck's Pioneer radio using the USB charging cable. Is asking me to install AV Reveiver app to my phone. How can I get both to work? I hate using the AUX. If you can answer this question for me or anyone. Thank you
You need the AppRadio app from iTunes so they can connect. But which radio do you have and what do you want to do? Play music, videos, mirror your phone?
OK, I got the iTunes to work on my Radio... Now I want to be able to watch netflix. I have model before yours. Made in 2011.. I know its pretty old, it has bluetooth, but thats probably for phone usage only??
Yes Bluetooth is only for phone calls and playing music through the radio from the phone. You need the video cables from Pioneer's website. Search for your radio on their site and go under accessories. You'll need the VGA or HDMI cable...depends on your radio.
where do i go at to get the update
Straight from Pioneer's website.
Yo, just updated my firmware and it updated properly. But it still isn't showing the app button on the screen . Can't use maps, pandora or any apps on my interface, did u have any of those problems?
The app button is on the menu screen not the regular radio screen. The button should be there and it lights up when you connect the phone or tablet. Do you have the AppRadio app on your phone? And do you have the right cables? You gotta have the video cable not just the charging cable.
Ya I can see the app button just doesn't light up. I got the cord that my dealership put in for me. Has the USB hook up along with a headphone jack. I then plug my phone charger into that to connect it. Do I need a different cable?
That's the problem bro. You need the video cable. You can't get video with that cable you have. Ill send you the info.
Here's the page for the cables...see which one you need. I have the IH202. www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Accessories/Smartphone-and-iPod-Cables
Thanks, went to the store checked it all out I still need the vga lightning (60$)& the cable u talked about (50-100$). Is it easy to install yourself or better to take it to the shop? Fucking ridiculous we need all this bullshit..are the features even worth all the extra money when it's said and done?
Man, that laggy as hell!! Sux for Pioneer not to update their stereos to function naively with the Lightning connector.
How may I delete bluetooth connections and how can I play videos? I attempted to play them once but it doesn't allow me to
Delete Bluetooth devices from the Bluetooth Connection Menu under settings. And how are you trying to play videos? From a memory card or a plugged in device?
I just put in a DVD into the stereo..so I go to the settings N scroll down until o see the Bluetooth settings?
Dvd isn't going to play while the car is out of park unless you have a bypass installed. And yes Bluetooth is in settings.
even when the car is parked it still doesn't play
Are these store bought DVDs? You might have a defective unit.
