      When I switched on today AA appeared with Coolwalk however, a third of the screen was still black with the large AA logo. The other two-thirds were split between my Spotify music screen and maps which are now tiny. Not sure it's that much of an improvement.

    How about the elephant in the room? Mercedes explicitly excluded the development of Android auto from the Ultra wide screens, leaving the horrible "Android Auto" black box empty. As a result, 1/3 of the screen is a black frame. It is a known issue and MB will just do nothing about it.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Рік тому +11

      I wish it was full screen too but there are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before.
      The reason is because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything.
      So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen.
      NTG 7 found in some new cars have higher faster processors and have one screen size leading to a full screen experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
      Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

    Hi Nick, love your videos! Have you heard anything regarding a split screen for the MBUX system? I have an A Class with a 10" infotainment screen, so this would easily cope. Most less expensive European car brands (MG, KIA) are now being produced with 'tile' infotainment systems, so Mercedes-Benz are lagging behind here in my opinion.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Рік тому +1

    Google maps are updated more frequently than maps on the Mercedes Nav system which usually gets updated yearly and at times, every 2 years or longer and even then, still missing some pertinent information. Google maps are up to date and already have live traffic. Google maps also have satellite view unlike the maps on Mercedes built in maps. Unfortunately, Android auto doesn't fill the entire screen which is the one downside of the system as compared to Apple Car Play. There are third party stand alone MMI boxes that use the connection to your car and your phone connects wirelessly. Those MMI boxes utilize the entire screen

    Nice informative video! I've never actually had the chance to play around with Android Auto, but I'm getting a new aftermarket radio installed that has it built-in.
    Random question for you: I usually drive around to places with my girlfriend, and we both sort of alternate hooking up our phones (both are Android) to the car radio over Bluetooth. Is there an easy way for Android Auto to switch between different phones?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! It depends on the car’s User Interface or in your case the aftermarket radio. It depends on the software that’s on the aftermarket radio of how easy it is to swap phones. At the very least, it should have a device manager of some description when you can swap phones or choose a primary phone or something.

      @@npoleary This sounds like regression comparatively to the COMAND interface, seeing as it is possible to have AA in full screen for it. Pessimistically, I'd say that the reason is in part to Mercedes having a desire for the end user to user their paid navigation system, which naturally, utilizes the entire screen. Another take from the software standpoint is due to the positioning of the messages, home, and back buttons (as well as the inside temperature), they need to leave enough room. Either way, it's pretty disappointing, and if purely software, it could clearly be remedied.

    I must be a dinosaur, as I prefer the MBUX system - especially navigation. I've tried navigation in AA, and the instructions given were both confusing, and given too late to action. As I have an EQC, a big plus for Mercedes navigation is the Electric integration, which links with Mercedes Me Charge as well. Google Maps is rubbish for finding charging points. As an aside, the big app for finding chargepoints is of course ZapMap - this has an Apple Carplay and AA option, but sadly only by paid monthly subscription.

    Thanks for the video. I'm using Android Auto on both my Ford and my BMW cars, and also I regularly use Google Maps on my laptop to look up all sorts of places; many of which I never go to. What bugs the heck out of me is when I use Android Auto in either of my cars, Google Maps starts up with 2 locations that I'd rather never see. There doesn't seem any way to stop Android Auto from starting Google Maps **without** those 2 locations popping up?

    • @npoleary

      Now worries, so Android Auto is your phone, any settings you change on Google Maps on your phone will change in the car. Android Auto will usually only have basic settings but if you check Google Maps on your phone then you may find it in there. I have used Google Maps quite a bit but haven't had the same thing happen to me, it could be something to do with labels maybe? Just a thought :)

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Рік тому +1

      Hey Dirk, I wish it was full screen too but there are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before.

      Sadly not all cars can do full screen CarPlay. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same before.
      For Mercedes it’s a common question which I’ve answered on my FAQ series here: ua-cam.com/video/N9x56XWdjIo/v-deo.htmlsi=mlzuNGtciSlsdcdb&t=537
      Basically it’s because MBUX (also known as NTG 6) on Mercedes is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing & coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything.

    Then says "you just tap text messages"
    I plugged my phone into my car this week to have a look and see if android auto is better than the built in infotainment system. It wasn't. Google maps was horrid compared to the systems own navigation. And i had zero interest in any other feature.
