  • Sauropods… my favourite dinosaur group! And for many years, my favourite model was the old Carnegie Collection 1:40 scale Brachiosaurus. I’d thought that manufacturers had all but abandoned the 1:40 scale for Sauropods and I’d never get another brachiosaurid of that stature… I’m glad I am wrong!
    This is the W Dragon (万龙堂) 1:35 Giraffatitan, and it is an awesome. The detail, the understated colouration that belies the great skill needed to execute it, the SIZE. This is one GRAND model of a well-known species, brings back so many memories of what it felt like to be a kid discovering these majestic animals, and truly any sauropod lover’s dream.
    Erratum: Thanks to viewer TAURON who pointed out I goofed on my math! I said in the video that for this 42cm, 1:35 would make the real animal 16.5m (54ft). Actually, it would actually be 14.7m (48ft).

    This is a spectacular figure given it’s size, weight and excellent sculpt. Trust me, it’s worth every penny.
    Sauropods have always been of great interest to me so I’m glad to see much more accurate display pieces of this scale at affordable pricing.
    There’s really nothing I can point to as a miscue in the production of this figure.
    As usual, a very positive, informative review that doesn’t skimp on going into actual physiology of some magnificent animals regardless of their absence.

      Thank you for your thoughts! This is indeed an impressive model, and after PNSO stopped its large size PVC figures I'd lost hope of having anything of this size. W Dragon has done an amazing job, and that banded tail was like a little bow on top showing that everything was out of choice, and not lack of skill or laziness.
      I hope you managed to get yours if you're living in the States. I understand Dan's Dinosaurs has discontinued this model. Truly one to have for sauropod and Jurassic Park lovers!

    Happy, Birthday!! Yet another great review. And yes, the opening dinosaur scene in Jurassic Park is one of the best moments in cinema history as far as I’m concerned.

      Thank you Michael! It is probably the scene that made the biggest impression on fans, especially those of us old enough to have actually watched it in the cinema. And perhaps one of those scenes that show the power of the big screen! Imagine if you could watch it on an 85" TV Screen with surround sound!
      It makes that Brachiosaurus death scene in Fallen Kingdom even more poignant.

    When I was unboxing mine, I just played on my laptop this brachiosaurus scene from Jurassic Park for the atmosphere XD
    Also I mentioned that the figurine has a pretty strange structure. It feels like it has a “skeleton” inside and cover “skin”. You can knock the different places and hear that it sounds really differently, like there are hollow places in some areas 🤔

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      Interesting! There may well be some hollow places to lighten on the weight, although I promise you as I was holding him up in front of camera I had to keep putting him down in exasperation because he was so heavy to manipulate! 😓
      I was thinking many things, but I guarantee you that "Hey I think this figure is hollow" was definitely not one of them! 🤣🤣

    Excellent review! And kudos to you on the opening of your video.
    I'm really tempted to purchase an updated Brachiosaurus but no models out there are up to standard. There are theories about the sauropods having pouches, waddles akin to birds and elaborate heads which aren't incorporated. Most models of sauropods show them as elephant/ rhino drab. I really hope this will change; I asked PNSO if they would do an updated Brachiosaurus.

    • @DinosDragons

      You mean like the Brian Engh reconstructions. It's really one of those things where, just because we haven't found soft tissue evidence, doesn't show they _didn't_ have them. It's all down to personal taste. You might like to see the Brachiosaurus done by Daniel Isaac Mendoza. Search Facebook under Esquizooic Artes plásticas

      Thank you Mark, for you kind comment!
      That moment of the Brachiosaurus from the original JP is indeed a special moment, especially so for those of us old enough to have watched it in theatres on the big screen! That was the moment I realised that magic of cinema, that we could now have _REAL_ dinosaurs on screen!

  • @JB-dm5cp
    @JB-dm5cp 3 роки тому +4

    Happy birthday, sir! :-) And what a nice dinosaur model to celebrate it with! I was emotional in the theater so many years (decades!) ago when the Brachiosaurus in Jurassic Park slowly came into view. It was the combination of seeing a “real, live dinosaur” and John Williams’ music. (All the stuff that came after Jurassic Park only ruined the feeling for me: those movies were absolutely redundant and a waste of effort, in my opinion. But that is just that: my opinion. Ultimately it all is just entertainment.) I was thinking about acquiring this figure as well. I bought the wonderful W-Dragon Tyrannosaurus when it came out, just because I think it is the most accurate Jurassic Park T. rex toy model available: the detailing (no “overdone” scaling) and craftsmanship of the sculpt give it a very beautiful, refined, statuesque feel, and it is one of my favourite figures (besides the PNSO “Winter Wilson”, for which I built a nice little base to compliment it and give this excellent Tyrannosaurus rex model a sense of scale). If I had enough money, I would buy this Giraffatitan immediately. I do have other nice Brachiosaurus (not Giraffatitan) models in my collection (like Invicta, Tamiya), so that is a little comfort.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you!
      I don't collect Jurassic Park figures because I am really running out of space, but if I were to get a JP T rex, W Dragon would be high on my short list of candidates! It really captures the look so well, and it's really nicely detailed and painted too, so I think you have an excellent model there! Not being overly detailed is actually a very important consideration, the most I learn about these creatures and about anatomy, and actually spoils it for me.
      I hope you can find something reasonably priced, or perhaps another company will come up with something more affordable, because Brachiosaurus is one of those iconic dinosaurs and really brings back a lot of memories of when JP first hit us.
      I feel two ways about the JP sequels. I quite liked The Lost World, (in general the two sequels pale in comparison to the first) but they did give us a lot more dinosaur species on the big screen and for that I feel grateful.
      On the other hand with Jurassic World, what really spoiled things for me was the idea of genetic hybrids. It takes away from the actual dinosaurs, and I feel that a good writer could have given us good stories without resorting to created monsters. Still, having watched and owned all the movies in the franchise, I definitely want to see how Dominion concludes, and because both casts are involved!

      My GOD, 1:20 is HUGE! If I ever struck the lottery and buy a big house, then yes, although if I ever reviewed a 1:20 brachiosaurus I foresee it will have to be me moving around with the camera on a gimbal!
      The Iron Studio Brachiosaurus is _AWESOME_ . If I were to get one JP figure, that would be the one. I believe there's one that even comes with the tree. I'm not sure how much space you have, but that is worthy one to have if you had to limit yourself to just a few. I congratulate you!

    I had to google HMN SII to understand why it is not just simply a Brachiosaurus and why is/was not an adult specimen. So if it is a sub adult that is 12.6m tall and the fig is 42cm, then should not it be indeed 1:30 scale? Cause with 1:35 and 42cm the specimen should be 14.7m. 😕 Don't you think they just simply marked the scale wrong?
    I can not help but prefer the Carnegie's bulkier, less detailed proportions over the more realistically proportioned and biologically more accurate 万龙堂, even though it is a no contest and W Dragon wins, hands down. 😂 Also, what you called veins on the sides of the belly, are really just wrinkles, copied from elephants. I like Carnegie's more scalie-texture over the mammal(elephant) skin, but with the more dull colours of 万龙堂. 😅

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

      Well I stated 1:30 in the video but that was _iif_ this was based on HMN SII. I don't recall W-Dragon saying that's what it was based on. However, you are absolutely right, I messed up my math! 42cm x 35 = 14.7m! I'll put an erratum in my description box immediately. Thanks for checking it! 😁
      I will _always_ have a soft spot for that old Carnegie! There is something very special about vintage models that were accurate for their time, that makes them very dear to me. Plus of course that's how I started, so there's plenty of nostalgia there as well. Unfortunately you might not get the old Carnegie ones so easily, but I have seen someon ebay, usually by people who aren't aware of the market for these, and just see some old 'junk' left by their now adult children wanting to get rid of it.
