Very good job presenting the new 1300 gs. I,too , will keep my1250. Apart from the massive financial investment getting a 1300 with all the extras , I , like most GS owners, have optimised my Triple Black to my needs. It has more power and torque that I could possibly use. With the new gs being slim and lighter ,I kind of like the brutish look of the 1250 even more. The 1300 is the bike that critics have demanded; lighter faster, more technology; however, that doesn’t make the 1250 any less of a great bike. Greetings, Jim

Mate I was so looking forward to the 1300. I'm a 1250 triple black 2021. After the test ride I bought a 2023 GSA trophy. Didn't buy the bike to be stiffer or more horse power. I bought it to munch miles in comfort.

Thanks again for another great video. I have the 1250 and to be honest, I find the handling is the best I've ever had on a large bike. I've never found myself wishing I had more power or/and torque. I'm 6'2" so the frame is idea for me. Sure, the 1300 design is new to us, I personally don't like it but like anything new, it usually grows on you and of course, its a matter of personal taste. I like the electronic main stand assist (probably not the correct nomenclature). I love technological aids but there's a limit for me as I prefer to retain my rider awareness and not rely too much on them. I'm sure it's going to be of interest to people who didn't buy the 1250 due to it's weight and physical size.

Excellent presentation but I cannot get past that X light, and again no backlit switchgear.
I love my 1250 and seeing them side by side, I can't help but feel the 1300 has lost some road presence.
Traditionally trade in every 3 years but I'm at a crossroads with this one and me thinks the 1250 is still King.

I have a 12 month old 1250GS TE with a few extras, after riding the 1300 and liking it but not being blown-away by it, the nail in the coffin of a possible "upgrade" was that it would have been my bike plus £8.5k. On the ride home I really appreciated just how good the 1250 is and contemplated my chances of hiding £8.5k of 2nd bike from my wife 🙂 Overall my impression of the 1300 is that it's a great bike especially for more sporty riding, if the still flawed shifter/blipper and the "no initial bite" brakes prove to bed in over time then I might re-visit the idea in a year or 2, I could live with the transmission whine that sounds a bit like a rally car. Great review, thanks for helping me save £8.5k.

I think you formed the same opinion as me . A bike that will divide opinion amongst GS owners. Interesting to see what the GSA will look like with 1400cc? The Trophy does look fab . I did like the way it handled , that screen was brilliant as was the radar stuff. I would certainly be inclined to do a bit more “off road”(ie gravel roads) with the new smaller one . Like you I have saved some cash . For the time being !! 😂

what a cracking review, super informative and very close to my thoughts after the test drive. I test drove the 1300 last week and initially my thoughts were get me back on the 1250, however after getting onto the twisty bits my mind was changed and I fell in love with it, I didn't notice any issues with the quick shifter on the bike I tested, the things that stood out the most for me were it felt a lot lighter, handling was superb and it was very quick, fell in love and ordered one this week after a lot of deliberation, my thinking is if they sell ,the price of the 1250 2019 plate I'm on at the min will be in tatters.
    Kind Regards,

Nice review thank you. Also good to see Jersey and the hotel I’ve stayed in many times. As a tall guy with long legs, I am worried about the smaller look of the new GS. I’ve got dodgy knees and having an as open knee angle as possible is vital for me. My 2023 GS has a higher seat and lower pegs and it’s only just comfortable for my knees. Did you notice how your legs felt? Was it more or less cramped than your GS? Cheers. Chris

That was a good riding presentation with all the key comments being exactly in line with my way of thinking. I had a 2014 R1200GSA TE for 9 years (and it never let me down once!) and last month I traded her in for a brand new R1250GSA TE. My decision to avoid the 1300 was based on the expectation that there would be initial production line issues with build and not forgetting a new suite of luggage would be required. A few 1300 issues are listed already on UA-cam but I expect the Germans to quickly sort. I am extremely delighted with the R1250 GSA TE as it is clearly much better than the 1200 wrt a very smooth and torquey engine, plus old farts like me can read the dash info. with ease. As has happened in the past with me I was never bold over with new GS models coming out, but leave me for a year or two and I get used to the idea that the time has come to change. Cheers, Wm. 👍

You are the first reviewer I've encountered who referred to the new quick shifter as a "bit clunky" and "not a huge improvement". Most of the other reviewers point it out as a major leap in comparison to the 1250. I am assuming everyone else tested very low milage one as well. I guess I won't know until I test one out myself. I have to agree with you. I have a 1250 GSA which is the same as yours for colour and wheels. Looking at the 2 bikes together, in my opinion, the 1250 looks better, the 1300 has a Japanese look to it! I totally understand the change in direction by BMW though. They need to move forward to keep up with the competition ultimately. Lets see what the replacement GSA looks like, apparently due for launch in September 2024, that might change my mind, however, I won’t be rushing out to change mine yet!

  • @howardp924

The new GS is lighter and stiffer without question. But I wonder how much of the seat of the pants flickability and handling difference can be attributed to the cast wheels (much lighter) v the cross spokes on your GS.

Enjoyed your piece on the 1300, you mentioned the 'howl' form the front end which is something that drives me nuts on the 1250. Does the infill panel you fitted cancel it out? Plus does the blade type screen you have on your 1250 reduce buffeting?

I think that if I was looking for a new BMW then the new 1300gs would be a no brainer. There's just not enough in it to trade up. Nice review and comparison! I’m interested in the adaptive ride height, but as a short arse (28” inseam), I’m concerned about the lack of a low suspension option. My current 1250 GS is low suspension with a low seat, and with that I can get the balls of my feet down. I've been looking for a 1250 to buy but I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger because if I'm honest with myself I really want a 1300. The 12 kg weight savings, the cleaner look, the stiffer frame, more torque at lower rpm, these are all significant improvements IMO. I still like the 1250 a lot, but I like the 1300 even more. Now I just have to decide if it's worth the additional cost.

    • @Crsf84

12kg is hardly a decider it’s half a tank of fuel. The 1300 has more tech rides a bit stiffer not as smooth and has more power . Sounds like a gs and goes like a gs. The money saving 1250/1300 new will not be massive prob a few grand

    • @erocnw1341
      @erocnw1341 7 місяців тому +2

12kg weight reduction is a big deal to me. It's also a big deal to a lot of people which is why BMW went through the effort to make the bike lighter. I guarantee if BMW had continued the trend of making the new model heavier than the old one, the majority of people would have been very disappointed. BMW should get credit where credit is due. Also, 12 kg is over 4 gallons, which is close to a full tank.

It’s a tuff one . I would say try and ride them back to back at a friendly dealership . The new one certainly handles better and is less of a beast to haul about and I would be quicker on it .Trouble is my 1250 is just so good that I came away a little bit disappointed .I really wanted to be totally blown away if I am being honest and I wasn’t . You’ve done a great review here but it sounded a little from the start that you were looking for negatives, almost trying to justify keeping your 1250 which is a brilliant bike. The mention of old farts 😂 I’m 62 and am fortunate to have a GSA ( 30k in 2 years on it ) and an S1000XR in the garage. It took me about 3 weeks to bed into the XR, but I still love the thrill of sharp handling and acceleration and this new 1300 seems to fall between a GS and an XR in performance and handling. My mate of the same age had a GS1250 and now has the GS1300 triple black and he can really handle a bike. He says it’s completely different in every way and much better to ride. So it’s a bit like when the 1250 was introduced people said there’s not much difference to the 1200 in performance …. But there was. This bike is another step forward. Once you see it with all the Touratech boxes and engine guards on it looking like a proper adv bike, minds might start to change. I’m 6’3 and am waiting to see the new GSA and if I don’t like it I’ll change to a V4 rally.

Hi appreciate comments . I did want to be blown away but wasn’t . Don’t get me wrong , without a doubt it handles better than my 1250 and is noticeably smaller when sat on and not in it and it won’t tie itself in knots when gunning it through the twisty bits like mine . But, my 1250 has been hilltopped (yes I know all the negative publicity) and the engine / throttle response felt better . I would like to see the triple black with gold wheels as I hate the solid ones . The GS Trophy looks the dogs bits though . I look forward to the launch of the GSA with a bigger engine . Either way the new GS will sell by the bucket load 👍

Great review and gorgeous scenery ✌🏻 I’ve tried it a couple of weeks ago and coming from a 2018 fully optioned 1200GS rallye, I have to admit that the upgrade is huge : Torque, stiffness, handling, gearbox, wind protection and acceleration are on a whole new level. So I don’t understand why GS riders have that much difficulty in accepting change. I could have had the same impressions of “yeah it’s a bit better overall but not different enough to spend my money”. In the end even if you come from a 1250, you’re still going to want to be riding a GS - in essence - and that’s what we want, no? I would’ve been more of a shocker if the ride had been totally rearranged.
Anyway, I ordered mine today, and I don’t really care if it’s a first edition, because as said, the Germans will sort wobbly things out very quickly (if need so, because the build quality is there) no doubt about that. Ride safe !

    Good review.
You mentioned the market focus of the new 1300. Seems a bit strange if they are focussing on the 30's & early 40's, most of them just don't have the money, especially now with higher interest rates for the foreseeable future &, with bikes like this being a true luxury, I'm left wondering what BMW were thinking.
I'm about to buy a BMW Adventure & at the moment, I much prefer the 1250. I think it looks better & I much prefer the 30Lt tank for my purposes.
I'm 55 & been waiting a long while to buy me a BMW. I prefer the quiet exhaust, the comfy seat, the staid temperament , the torque when i need it & the reliability that I require. I'm not really after a hugely powerful fun machine at my age. Been there, done that. Been riding motor bikes since I was 7 years of age. Had a shit tin of bikes that I've had to work on, fix up, balance carbies, chains & sprockets & on & on. Now I just want a comfy bike that works, does what I NEED IT TO DO, doesn't need constant attention & I'm don't piss the neighbours off every morning.

I did want to be blown away, but wasn’t .The new one definitely handles better and is noticeably smaller, but just lacked something…character ? Who knows.Mine has had an ecu remap here in the uk and the throttle , I found, is much better than the demo bike I rode. I am hoping to ride the owner of the dealerships 1300 Trophy, if he’ll let me now that I wasn’t blown away by the demo bike, as he has had an ecu flash on his new Trophy, just like he and I have had on our 1250’s. I did quite like the frying pan finish of the new one, looks very hard wearing. Bottom line is that with outstanding finance on mine, although not huge, the price to change simply isn’t worth it for the benefits. I am hoping that the GSA will blow me away next year……🤞

The whining noise really annoyed me, no other reviews have mentioned it.

Not sure I actually like the 1300, seems to have lost something and now looks more like most other bikes apart from its quirky marmite headlight.

I have a gs 1250 on my second one. Not sure some of the arguments, The quickshifter is the worst on the market but in bmw defence the way your riding it there is where they say NOT to use the quickshifter 1st-2nd and at low revs if you push on and use it it’s better not great.
I have ridden the 1300 it imo has miles more power far better quickshifter and apart from that it is still a gs. The 1250 for me looks better only as I hate the 1300 front end.
The ride hight is a funny debate as the gs is hardly the tallest bike out there u less you have legs like a jack russel, The illuminated switches is another laughable comment as never have I required illuminated buttons and i’ve done thousands of miles at night. Generally or in fact almost always I never look at the switches.
Overall the 1300 is more modern but for me I wouldn’t change it’s just another gs and they have been much of a much for years now.

Thanks for the comments . The new 1300 is certainly causing a few discussions . It will appeal to a wider audience (younger). There are so many hints and tips for the QS out on the web. BMW’s handbook makes no reference to when not use it etc from what I can see having downloaded the new 1300 owners manual to digest . With the sporty suspension giving a 20mm height increase it certainly will be a challenge for us 5’9 tall riders. My GS has been hilltopped and make of that as you wish but jumping back onto mine the power delivery was way better as it’s linear and if anything feels more powerful ….. I haven’t ridden a standard 1250 gs since I rode a test model before I got mine so maybe the new does feel it has more power but not in my case. I wouldn’t have got my GS without spoked wheels, so it would be nice to see the new GS with spoked wheels in the flesh . Certainly loved the screen and radar bits . I think it’s a bike that will divide opinions . No doubt I will be on a new one next year though 🙈😂

Apart from a face only a mother could love, there’s very little about this which might convince me that it’s worth changing a 1250 for. I prefer the looks of the old bike, It had more than enough shove, a better seat and really, is there much difference to the ride?
The looks alone would stop me from buying one. Then the cheapskates can’t even provide a mudsling or hugger to protect the rear shock, nor a decent back light. Those integrated flasher rear lamps are a safety issue for me. Rear plate holder/indicator support is way too narrow. No splash protection whatsoever for rider or pillion.
Sorry, but for me it’s full of compromises. All the things I wanted to see addressed, including backlighting control buttons and things mentioned above, they’ve failed to improve on. Screen is too small too.
Given those things and the fact there’s already quality issues with the first recall announced, it’s an expensive trinket not worth the extra over a 1250 for me.

i think if you had the 1300 for a week, you "may" change your opinion on it, let`s be honest here, it`s NOT run in, everything`s tight and clunky on it, nothing`s loosened up etc etc.....gearbox`s are orrible when new, brakes aren`t bedded in, tires are not as grippy, just a few things to consider.........🤨🤨

I would like to have given it a hard time BUT it has only done 80 miles! You can definitely get a feel how the bike rides though and get those initial thoughts. Would like to have it for 2000 miles to do a full review ...doubt the dealership would let me 🙈

The new BMW GS looks more like a Honda Hornet. Not interested.
