Great format Suede! The fact you're playing on CID and therefore slower than you would normally play, is actually a bonus for me - I'm usually struggling to keep up at normal speed. It's also nice that you can explain thoughts in more detail without it costing you errors in game. I love that the commentary doesn't have much in the way of spoilers as well. Great work!
I'm glad not spoiling things is working out! It bugs me when I'm watching commentary and they say, "This mistake cost me the game", or something to that effect, and it's only 1/4 of the way through the match. I like to keep a little suspense.
double leader and double army on the same turn holy moly. The other thing to consider with Catapults is that later Arty units are more likely to succeed than they aren't, but against city-bound units, Catapults are inefficient. So just waiting until you have an army of Catapults to wreck whatever gets in your way goes a lot down to luck, and the odds aren't really in your favor.
When is the next episode?! This is one of the most entertaining Civ 3 series that I've seen. Hope you continue to make more. Civ 3 in my opinion was the best Civ
I'm done making explicit jokes about Yamama but I won't stop using the city name whenever it's applicable. One advantage to playing Sengoku lately is there's a city called Obama and it cracks me up./
the AI attacks armies as it attacks any other unit actually. it just treats its as a single unit and because within an age a healed army is comparatively ridiculously strong, it just thinks the odds are so bad that the fight is not worth it. its happy to take worse odds when attacking a city thats why armies in cities are usually not safe. you can use the same trick to outplay the ai. usually at the same age, fortified veteran units on a mountain with a fortress has similar bad odds, so the ai will never attack it. be careful if they have artillery tho, because once weakened the odds a good enough that it will attack. if you are behind fortified elite units on a fortress on a barricaded mountain are even often good enough to persuade the AI to never attack with units from the next area. if i remember correctly this works e.g. with rifleman against veteran tanks, but it may also need a river
Awesome game so far. Very lucky and awesome to get two armies there at a clutch moment. you'd still be doing fine with 1 and its not that crazy when you're doing that much advantageous combat. I'm a pretty good player but the biggest thing i've learned from you is delaying buildings in your cities and not building unnecessary ones. I really do not like having undeveloped cities midway through medieval era and into the industrious when you're racing high level AI. However, spending those turns getting 4 extra attacking units (per city) early on is just too important because you just can't out settle the AI, and you need to make moves before they stack 3 pikeman in every city. Otherwise your next opportunity is using Cav if you can outrace your neighbors or they don't have the saltpeter/horses.. and you arent outproducing them if you didnt take some early cities.
Hey man do you have a save file of the first turn? I can try myself how I stack up against your game ;) same difficulty, same rules, same map, same civs and all
Ugh... NEVER disband catapults. If you can get to Replaceable Parts, every last upgraded artillery unit is worth a small fortune. Having one extra tile of bombardment comes as hugely powerful for taking down cities with combat settlers. Infantry are not much of a problem with enough artillery proper and a 6 attack unit. One could also bombard borders before a war with artillery proper from a border city (thus keeping them safe). Then invading units can get killed without only the odd fast unit available to attack your cities.
The "can't use this tile, but it's in my territory" from a border city does fix itself after a SINGLE turn. Two consecutive armies without The Heroic Epic is (1/16) * (1/16) = (1 / (2^8)) = 1/256 probability. That's about .39% probability. I usually prefer the 2nd early leader for The Heroic Epic to MGL rush it, to improve that probability on leaders to 1/12. On the other hand, if you can get a third soon, then you could start on The Pentagon. I think I remember reading that swordsmen will attack full health archer armies. The 'won't attack armies' feature depends on the strength of the defense of the units in the army.
@@suedeciviii7142 Oops. The odds for an army are 0 if you don't have the Military Academy. If you have it, and have a lot of shields in the box, then the odds of an army are near 1, though pollution might corrupt your shields or one supposes that city getting conquered somehow? Some luxury disruption could be possible also to lead to a riot, I suppose also. The odds of two consecutive MGLs is 1/256 following the above '1/16' calculations. SirPleb has an article on creating and using leaders where 1/16 is the default probability. There's an an older article which says 1/16 (both articles got written before Conquests). That might be information that one of the designers from Firaxis told people a while back. I don't know the original source.
The 1/256 figure is pretty misleading for the "rarity" of this occurring. This is for any two fixed combats, but there were many combats throughout the video. A better question would be "What is the probability of the first two leaders I get coming from consecutive attacks?" This is much closer to 1/16, since, with enough attacks, you are very likely to have at least one leader, and on the attack after whenever that is, you have 1/16 chance of getting another.
@@danielhalpern1389 Agreed mostly, yeah. Not as applicable here as in other situations, but this is a pet peeve. "The odds of us both having the same birthday is 1 in 126736!" Well, no. everyone has a birthday. The odds of two people having the same birthday is ~ 1 in 356. The odds of it being March 8th or whatever is 1 in 126736 but what's the importance of that particular day?
You had wines, furs, and ivory. The Mongols had Dyes and Silks in the southern cities when you made peace. Plus that incense. 6 luxuries comes as enough to kill the luxury slider entirely with marketplaces for all size 12 (or below) cities and gets every city to size 7 without any need for the luxury slider in a Republic. Edit: Oh... those Arabs went to war with you.

Ironic Mongols were getting crushed by Mounted Warriors

Suede this format is great. The pace of the game is fast and it keeps it interesting!!!! Thanks !!!
Double leader on the same turn wow
Mounted warriors are OP, in one of my games back in the day the Iroquois AI rampaged through the Zulu!

A better joke is how you always have to fight the Arabs in your last videos no matter the civ you play. There’s a glitch there for sure!
@@GROller86 I pick them as enemies because on high difficulties, the AI have shorter anarchies anyway, plus expansionist isn't very good for the ai.
"Our Golden Age has ended. So say our analysts." I love how the domestic advisor tries to avoid responsibility for bonuses vanishing.

been waiting this for days

Hell yes. I’ve been needing civ 3 content

Are the odds of an army that high? Makes sense with my experiences playing, but I remember reading lower.
